Class of 2010 alum siblings graduate from UNO with honors
Joe & Carrie Nabity to pursue graduate studies in fall

Wahoo Public Schools has no shortage of alumni who reap the rewards of years of hard work and dedication.
Joseph and Caroline Nabity of the WHS Class of 2010 are certainly no exception!
On May 10, 2014, both graduated from the Honors Program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and both will attend graduate school this fall.
Carrie has graduated, with honors, with a degree in Political Science, with an emphasis on Political Economics.
Because of her high GPA and LSAT score, she has earned a full-tuition scholarship to Creighton University School of Law. She is pursuing her dream of working in politics.
Carrie currently works as an intern for Omaha Mayer Jean Stothert. Her internship includes working directly with Stothert’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications, working on projects and conducting research. Carrie’s internship concludes at the end of the summer, when she will begin her three-year graduate program at Creighton.
“I hope to end up in government and politics, but the law degree will help me be more marketable,” Carrie commented.
Joe has graduated as the top student in Management Information Systems.
In the fall of 2013, he started a paid position with Peter Kiewit and Sons’ International Home Office in Omaha, working as a business intern for the Human Relations Department. This internship has turned into a lucrative career, as Joe started full-time with the company on June 4. Included in his Kiewit contract is a stipend to support his graduate studies in Management Information Systems and Public Affairs.
“I’m very excited to be employed by such a great company, and to utilize the skill set that I have gained to better support Kiewit,” Joe commented.
As part of their Honors Program at UNO, for which students qualify through superior high school GPAs and ACT scores, Joe and Carrie had to write thesis papers, which were presented to UNO faculty members.
The topic of Carrie’s thesis was focusing on the U.S. role as the world’s policeman, and how the role should be revised through international cooperation. For Joe’s thesis, he presented a data set analysis for non-verbal communication.
In addition to their impressive academic achievement, Carrie and Joe were no strangers to taking on student leadership roles and service opportunities during their tenure at UNO. Both were active in National and Regional College and University Housing Associations, each having served a term as President of the UNO Chapter and a year as Senior Resident Assistant (RA) at University Village. Their work in these and other campus organizations illustrate their confidence and drive to serve others and make the world a better place.
Carrie and Joe both commented that they felt they were well-prepared for the challenges of college.
“Wahoo provided me with the base skill set I needed to do well in college. WHS students are equipped with the knowledge to be successful at a four-year university. They just need to apply it and be dedicated,” Carrie said.
“I would say my involvement with the music department helped me develop my leadership skills, and gave me the confidence to take on the student leadership positions that I held during my college career, and that have helped me prosper as an individual” Joe added.
Joe and Carrie’s parents also expressed their appreciation to WPS:
“Things they learned in the halls and classrooms of Wahoo were put into every paper, project and examination they completed during their college careers,” wrote Greg and Cindy Nabity. “We are so very thankful for all you did to prepare them to accomplish their next major step – a college diploma. Thank you for your influence in their lives.”
