Wahoo Starts a New Tradition (SEASON SUMMARY)
While 2021-22 was the second year for the Wahoo Girls Wrestling team, it was the first official season as the NSAA fully sanctioned the sport after the 2020-21 season. The team was led by its trio of Junior returning letter winners: Kaylee Ricketts, Marke Zeleny, and Megan Robinson.
After getting a couple of wins by freshman Jessi Hasenkamp and Karina Raney, the full team opened its season at the Fremont Invite, finishing in 5th place with a trio of medalists (Robinson and Ricketts 1st, Karina Raney 2nd). The team followed that up with a strong showing at the 22-team “Battle at the Point.” Champions Zeleny and Ricketts led the way to a 4th place team finish. Other placers were Raney (2nd), Hasenkamp (4th), junior Grace Darling (5th), and junior Katie Elder (7th).
Hasenkamp scored a fall and Elder picked up a win by decision in 30-21 dual loss to Nebraska City. Ricketts and Zeleny won via forfeit to round out the scoring.
The Lady Warriors followed that up with one of their best outings of the season, beating out eventual
State Team Champion South Sioux City to win the 15-team Wahoo Invite, scoring 104 points. Ricketts and Zeleny were individual champions and were joined by a trio of runners-up (Robinson, Darling, and Raney), and 4th place finisher Hasenkamp.
The holiday “break” took the Lady Warrior grapplers to the 41-team Winnebago Invite. The team once again performed well, finishing in 3rd place. Once again Ricketts was an individual champ. Other team placers were Raney (3rd), Robinson (4th), Darling (6th), Hasenkamp (10th), and Elder (15th).
After the team picked up some matches in the non-scoring competition at Bennington, they attended another huge tournament, the High Plains Tourney at Columbus. The team was 4th out of 40. Ricketts added another individual title in a stacked field that included most of the ranked 165 pounders in the state. Hasenkamp and Zeleny added 4th place finishes. Robinson was 6th, and Darling and Elder were 8th and 9th respectively.
As the regular season entered its home stretch the team really hit its stride winning its next two tournaments. The first of these was the Malcolm Invite, were the team tallied its highest point total of the season with 109. Ricketts, Hasenkamp, Robinson, and Darling all finished as individual champs, with Elder turning in her best performance of the season with a runner-up finish. Zeleny rounded out the scoring with a 4th place finish.
The team next won the Rumble in River Country tourney in Nebraska City. Ricketts, Hasenkamp, Darling, and Zeleny were all champions. Robinson was runner up and Elder placed 5th in a tough bracket.
The team hit a bit of slide the next week finishing 16th at the Weeping Water Invite. The bright spots included an individual championship from Ricketts, and Darling taking a defending state champion to overtime in a hard-fought loss. Unfortunately, returning NSWCA State 4th place finisher Marke Zeleny suffered a season-ending injury in this tournament. The team followed up this tournament with two losses in a dual with Conestoga.
The Lady Warriors got the season back on track at the Trailblazer Conference tournament. Down to four wrestlers, they battled to a runner-up finish. The highlight of the tournament was Darling avenging two losses from earlier in the season on her way to an individual conference title. Ricketts continued her undefeated campaign in joining her teammate as conference champ. Robinson and Hasenkamp also stepped up and earned conference runner-up honors.
With multiple conflicts limiting available wrestlers, Ricketts and Hasenkamp participated in the Cedar Bluffs Invite the following day. The duo finished 10th out of 18 schools. Ricketts completed an undefeated regular season, taking first place, while Hasenkamp avenged an earlier season loss in the consolation finals to take 3rd place.
The next week the postseason began, as the Lady Warriors traveled to the loaded District 1 tournament. The team battled hard, placing 11th of 24. The duo of Ricketts and Hasenkamp qualified for the Girls State Tournament. Ricketts pinned her way through the field to capture a district championship, while Hasenkamp knocked off the 4th seed twice to overperform her 5 seed and place 3rd. Robinson and Darling battled before ending their seasons in the consolation semifinals. Elder found herself unable to advance out of a loaded bracket with eight winning records.
As a returning NSWCA champion, Ricketts began her march toward a NSAA title in the 165-pound weight class with a pin of 4th-ranked Piper Zatechka of Omaha Westside. Her semifinal match was a battle with another defending NSWCA champion, third-ranked Tiffany Senff of Aurora. Ricketts took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd period before getting the fall to advance to the finals. Waiting in the finals was second-ranked Paola Vergara of O’Neill. This match was her greatest challenge of the year, as Vergara was able to last all three rounds, but in the end, Ricketts capped an unbeaten season (47-0, 42 pins) with a 12-5 victory to became Wahoo’s first NSAA Girls State Wrestling Champion, setting the Nebraska Girls State Record with her 47 wins.
As a team the Lady Warriors finished in 15th place out of 65 teams. Congratulations on a fantastic season. With its entire roster underclassmen, we can expect big things from this group next season!
