Translation: Congratulations Warrior Academic Decathlon: 2013 State Finals Qualifiers!
Ten WHS Academic Decathlon students competed in the 2013 regional competition, held at D.C. West High School on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) is a national scholastic competition dedicated to promoting and rewarding the academic achievement of students. Each year, the USAD announces a broad topic of study. That topic of study is then spread over ten academic areas (hence the name decathlon).
This year’s AcaDeca curriculum focuses on the theme “Russia.” Students spent the Fall 2012 semester studying the curriculum, which covered all aspects of Russia, from its founding around 800 BC, to Imperial Russia and the Russian Revolution, to the world’s introduction to communism with the formation of the U.S.S.R., to modern-day post-soviet Russia. The curriculum also included a novel study of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.
To demonstrate their knowledge of the material, students competed at Saturday’s regional with other AcaDeca students (both individually and as a team), where they took written exams in seven academic areas: Art, Economics, Language & Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, and Social Studies. Teams that qualify for February’s State competition will also compete in speech, interview and essay competitions, totaling ten events.
Prior to the competition, each student is placed into one of three categories (Honor, Scholastic, and Varsity) based on his/her core academic grades over the past two school years. Teams of six are required for the regional competition, and each team must consist of two students from each of the three categories. An alternate team of up to six students is also allowed.
Wahoo's main team for this meet consisted of the following students:
Honors: Alex Talbott, Tyler Ruzicka
Scholastic: Paris Mood, Sydney Kudritzki
Varsity: Dalton Rademaker, Parker Nicholls
Wahoo's alternate team consisted of the following students:
Honors: Rachael Meyer, Ronnie Brust
Scholastic: Wyatt Hundstad
Varsity: Jacob Wirka
When all was said and done, Warrior AcaDeca members left the competition with 24 individual medals from the event!
