Wahoo 5th graders turn a writing assignment into a cause for action
Students initiate campaign and raise $165 for SCLP
What started out as a writing assignment turned into a real-life experience recently for the 5th graders in Mrs. Rezac’s class.
The assignment? Students were asked to write an opinion essay using the following prompt: “I believe that our class should raise money and donate it to ____.”
After discussing it, students chose to write about Saunders County Lost Pets (SCLP), an organization already familiar to most of them.
After completing the assignment, several of the students asked if they could turn their idea into reality. After talking with the principal, they went to work, with the goal of raising as much money as they could in a two-week period.
“Students were very adamant about helping out,” Mrs. Rezac stated. “I was very proud of them, and how they took this on!”
One of the student’s parents posted it on her Facebook page, and their neighbors even helped.
The result? In the end, students proudly presented $165 to SCLP Board President Deb Wilcox, who brought a couple of “friends” with her.
It was a great culminating activity to what started as a simple assignment.
Well done students!
