ACADEMIC ALL-STATE
Congratulations (from left) Grace Darling, Megan Robinson, Katie Elder (Honorable Mention), and Lanta Hitz for earning 2022-2023 Academic All-State awards from the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association (NSWCA)!
SEASON SUMMARY:
The Wahoo Girls Wrestling team had a very successful 2022-23 season. Led by its four seniors (Kaylee Ricketts, Megan Robinson, Grace Darling, and Katie Elder), the team set new school records for dual wins and winning percentage with its 3-1 record. The team also recorded its highest district finish and set a new record for most points scored at the State Tournament.
The team began its season at the Fremont Invite, finishing in fourth place with seven medalists (Ricketts first, Darling, Robinson, and sophomore Jessi Hasenkamp took runner-up, and Elder, junior Lanta Hitz, and freshman Rachel Stevens finished foureth). The highlight of the meet was Megan Robinson setting a new school record for fastest pin with a 13-second fall.
Week two kicked off with a thrilling 36-30 dual win against Fillmore Central. With the dual tied at 30 with a single match remaining, Hasenkamp locked up the win with an 11-second pin (breaking Robinson’s newly set fastest pin record in the process). The team followed that up with a top-ten finish at the Battle at the Point. Ricketts led the way with a first-place finish, with Robinson and Hasenkamp placing third and fourth respectively.
Next up for the Lady Warriors was the 20-team Wahoo Invite, where the team placed sixth. Individual placers included Ricketts (first), Darling and Hasenkamp (third), Robinson (fifth), and Hitz and Stevens (sixth).
The holiday “break” took the team to the 37-team Winnebago Invite. The team once again performed well, finish in sixth place. Once again Ricketts was an individual champ. Other team placers were Darling (second), Robinson (third), Hasenkamp (fifth), and Hitz (sixth). The team then rang in the new year by placing third at the Spotlight on Girls Wrestling Tournament at Conestoga. Darling and Ricketts were tournament champions, with Robinson and Hasenkamp finishing as runners-up. Rounding out the placers were Elder (fifth) and Stevens (seventh).
Next up was the biggest tournament of the season, the 50-team Norm Manstedt Girls Invite at Columbus. The team had a very good outing finishing in eighth place. Ricketts added another individual title. Darling finished in sixth place, Hasenkamp in ninth, Elder and Robinson in tenth, and Hitz in eleventh. Freshman Lexi Jonas also had a very good showing, finishing fourth in a 13-girl JV bracket.
The Lady Warrior grapplers then competed in the 26-team Malcolm Invite, where the team finished in third place, setting a new record for tournament points scored with 124. Ricketts was once again the tourney champ (tying the school record for fastest pin in 11 seconds along the way) with a trio of wrestlers finishing as runners-up: Robinson, Hasenkamp, and Hitz. Seniors Darling and Elder finished in third place.
The following week the Lady Warriors hosted Lakeview and Crete for a triangular. The team defeated Lakeview 42-30 before falling to Crete 33-42. Individually the girls only dropped a single match on the night in matches wrestled.
The team next placed fourth out of 25 teams at Schuyler. Ricketts and Hasenkamp were champions, with Darling finishing as runner-up and Hitz placing third. The following Monday, the team was off to Battle Creek, finishing eighth out of 40 teams. Individually Ricketts placed first, with Elder and Robinson placing second. Hasenkamp and Stevens both placed third, and Jonas finished in fifth place.
Up next for the Lady Warriors was the Weeping Water Invite. Despite only having half the team available, the team placed eighth out of 29 teams, with Ricketts placing first, Hasenkamp second, and Hitz fourth. Hitz joined the fastest pin club at this tournament, becoming the fourth wrestler to set the mark during the season, joining Ricketts and Hasenkamp as the current record holder with an 11-second fall. The following week the team took on Conestoga in a dual, with the Lady Warriors coming out on top 36-30, with Freshman Stevens providing the winning points at the final weight class of the evening.
The team was then back home for the Trailblazer Conference Tournament, where the team finished in third place. Ricketts became a two-time Conference Champion and Robinson picked up her first conference crown with two dominant wins. Darling, Hitz, and Stevens all finished as runners-up, with Elder and Jonas adding 3rd place finishes. Hasenkamp was unable to compete due to injury.
With multiple conflicts limiting available wrestlers, Ricketts and Elder participated in the Cedar Bluffs Invite the following day. The duo finished twelfth out of 16 schools. Ricketts completed an undefeated regular season, taking first place, while Elder finished in fifth place.
The next week the postseason began, as the Lady Warriors traveled west to Bridgeport for the District 4 tournament. The team had one of its best performances of the season, placing sixth out of 34 teams. Ricketts and Darling qualified for the Girls State Tournament. Ricketts pinned her way through the field before receiving a medical forfeit in the finals to capture a District Championship, while Darling also pinned her way to the finals, defeating a 23-1 wrestler from Gering and the #2 seed in her bracket to reach the finals en route to a district runner-up finish. Robinson, Elder, Hasenkamp, and Hitz all wrestled tough, each falling one match short of Omaha with losses in the consolation semifinals.
Having earned their spot in Omaha, Ricketts and Darling continued their seasons at the NSAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament. At 115, Darling opened her tournament with a second-period pin of tenth-ranked Marissa Anderson of Columbus, avenging a loss from earlier in the year. She then dropped a hard-fought match to eventual state champion Kylee Plowman of Conestoga in the quarterfinals before losing a heart breaker in the final seconds to eventual 5th place finisher Angelica Velasquez of Lexington.
Ricketts began her quest for a second straight NSAA title in the 170-pound weight class with pins of eleventh-ranked Meghan Hixon of Grand Island and twelfth-ranked Carson Shank of Lincoln East. She then won by medical forfeit against #4 Jocelyn Ambriz of Ansley-Litchfield in the semifinals. Waiting in the finals was #2-ranked Annabelle Poppe of Crofton-Bloomfield. Ricketts jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period and completed her undefeated season with a pin in the second period. With the win Ricketts won her third straight state title (1 NSWCA and 2 NSAA) and broke her own state record for wins, finishing 52-0 after going 47-0 last year.
As a team the Lady Warriors finished in 21st place out of 91 teams and set a new school record for points at the State Tournament with 34. Congratulations on another great season!
