WMS supports backpack program
Student fundraiser yields $880 in donations
Wahoo Middle School Student Council organized a fundraiser for the Saunders County Backpack program during the month of December.
The Backpack program is a voluntary nutrition support program that provides a sack full of food for students to take home each weekend. According to Backpack officials, the program costs nearly $1,700 per month to operate the Wahoo portion of the program. Persons wishing to donate to the program can drop off checks or cash at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church office or at Cookies and Cream.
The Student Council conducted the fundraiser for two and a half weeks. The goal was for the middle school to raise $250, and Mr. Harris agreed to match the $250 if it was raised.
The students easily surpassed the goal. Incentives were put into place each week to get kids motivated. These included Tootsie Pops for the homeroom class with the highest one-day total during week 1 (Mr. Bomar), getting to put a whipped cream pie in a student council officer's face for the highest total during week 2 (Mr. Voboril) and a free class period to the homeroom class with the highest overall total (Mr. Voboril).
After the final counting was completed, $880.37 was raised for the Backpack program.
Student Council officer Blakely Thrasher commented on the success of the project: "I was amazed at the amount we raised. This is the first time that I have been involved in a fundraising activity that every class actually participated."
Principal John Harris agreed.
"It is always a good thing when our students can recognize a need and reach out and support it with such unity," Harris commented.
Good job, Wahoo Middle School!
