Alternative School Students Learn Job Skills
Lincoln Action is providing materials and training for improving employment skills.
Lincoln Action Program, Inc. (LAP), is providing a careers curriculum to students in the Wahoo Alternative High School for the 2003-2004 school year. This initiative, scheduled to conclude in May 2004, is made possible by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Labor.
Curtis Biggs, LAP Education and Employment Specialist, facilitates the program in both the Wahoo and Waverly Alternative High Schools. Curtis meets with the classes 3 or 4 times per month, implementing the “Pathways to Success” curriculum recently developed and certified by the Department of Labor for use in youth classrooms. Through “Pathways to Success” students discuss such employment related topics as goal setting, job searches, interviewing, and job retention.
In addition to the curriculum, Curtis also individually discusses career and educational goals with students to provide a warmer personal approach as well as to more adequately cater to each individual’s needs. Job searches are conducted on a regular basis with the youth/students.
Lincoln Action Program is a private nonprofit human service agency serving Lancaster and Saunders Counties dedicated to meeting the basic needs, education and employment goals, and family development issues of area residents.
