Letter from WPS Superintendent announces USDA's extension of free meals for kids program
Extension provides free breakfast & lunch to all students through end of 2020-2021 school year
December 18, 2020
As was shared earlier this fall, Wahoo Public Schools was participating in a program through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that provided free meals, breakfast and lunch, for all students at school. Initially, the sunset date of the program was to be December 31, 2020. Fortunately, we have been informed that the program has been extended and will run through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. As a result, any student attending Wahoo Public Schools that participates in the meal program will not be charged for the meal through the end of the school year. Below are a few important points regarding the program:
- Every student is eligible for the free meal without application.
- We will NOT write checks to reimburse individuals for their participation during this time. The funds will remain in the student account so when we return to the regular program, the student can continue participation in meals.
- If a student selects an extra entrée or à la carte item, those are not covered under the USDA program and will be charged to the student meal account.
- If your student(s) is carrying a negative balance in the meal account, this would be an opportune time to pay off that amount and bring the account to zero.
We feel fortunate to have the support of the USDA and be able to participate in this program. If you have any further questions, please contact the superintendent’s office for more information.
Sincerely,
Brandon J. Lavaley, Superintendent
Wahoo Public Schools

Letter from WPS Superintendent outlines USDA free meals for kids program
Free breakfast & lunch will be provided to all students through Dec. 31
October 1, 2020
Wahoo Public Schools will be participating in a program through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that will provide free meals, breakfast and lunch, for all students at school. The effective date of this participation will be September 1, 2020, and will run through December 31, 2020 or until the federal funding runs out. With that said, here are some important points of the program:
- The student’s meal accounts will be reimbursed any charges incurred from September 1 due to participation in the regular meal program.
- We will NOT write checks to reimburse individuals for their participation during this time. The funds will remain in the student account so when we return to the regular program, the student can continue participation in meals.
- The program is set to expire at the end of the first semester or when federal funds are depleted. We will communicate with parents if the program does not last through the end of the first semester.
- If a student selects an extra entrée or ala carte item, those are not covered under the USDA program and will be charged to the student meal account.
We feel fortunate to have the support of the USDA and be able to participate in this program. If you have any further questions, please contact the superintendent’s office for more information.
Sincerely,
Brandon J. Lavaley, Superintendent
