Warrior Golfers Finish Runner Up at Capital Conference Invite

Launch the media gallery 1 playerSyracuse – The Wahoo Golf Team fell short of its goal to capture the Capital Conference Championship played at the Syracuse Golf Club on Friday May 2.
Despite the loss the second place finish came with a great deal of satisfaction as the Warriors shot a year best 329 as a team, and placed three players in the top ten. DC West won the invite shooting an impressive 314, and placing four players in the top ten.
Wahoo’s Austin Watton fired an 81, placing him in a tie for 9th place. Watton went on to win a playoff against Arlington’s BO Brown. The first hole looked bleak for Watton as his tee shot went far right and he left his next two shots short of the green. With Brown in scoring position Watton was forced to make a 10-foot putt from just below the hole on the fringe. With the make Watton and Brown pushed to the next hole where both players pared. On the ensuing hole Brown left his second shot well short of the green leaving an opening for Watton to seal the win. Watton’s pitch shot left him with a 2-foot birdie putt which he made. Brown conceded the hole to Watton after Watton’s birdie putt went in. Watton finished in 9th place.
Taylor Murren also played in Watton’s group in a playoff for 7th place. Murren lost to DC West’s Tony Trayner after Trayner birded the first hole. Murren earned an 8th place finish with his score of 80.
The story of the day was Jeff Borreson’s 2nd invite victory of the season. Borreson had been struggling a bit as of late and was looking to regain his early season form. Borreson fired an invite-best 37 on the front and looked poised to walk away with a win after the first six holes on the back-side. Borreson was three over going into the last three holes before missing a short par putt on the 16th hole. Borreson went on to double bogie and bogie the last two holes to finish at seven over with a 77. The question was would the score hold up on the leader board? The last group featured two players within striking distance of Borreson’s 77. If either DC West’s Dillon Larson or Bennington’s Eli Preissler could finish with a birdie on the 450 yard par 5 18th they would finish in a tie with Borreson. After missing a long birdie putt, Preissler pared to finish with a 78. Larson then stepped up for a 10-foot birdie try from just below the hole. Larson’s putt fell short and drifted left of the hole to seal the victory for Borreson. Larson and Preissler finished in a five-way tie for 2nd place with a score of 78.
Wahoo continues competitive play with a Triangular on Tuesday the 6th, followed by districts in Beatrice on Monday the 12th.
