Murren Makes It Through Rigorous District Tourney to Qualify for State Golf Tournament

Launch the media gallery 1 playerBeatrice--At nearly 6,700 yards, water hazards galore, sprawling expanses of natural grasses, gargantuan oak trees, and PGA style rough, the Beatrice Country Club makes for a formidable adversary. Add a 40 mph wind and it becomes next to impossible.
On Monday, May 12, the Wahoo Golf Team participated in the B1 district tourney against 11 others teams from around the area. In the hunt for a district championship was Nebraska City, a team who was yet to lose an event this year and was coming off of an impressive 6 under showing at their last meet. Also included was a Gretna team that had been solid all season long placing in the top 3 in almost all of the events throughout the season. With these two teams most likely consuming 5-7 places in the top ten and taking 1st and 2nd place respectively, the rest of the field was hunting for a 3rd place team finish and the remaining individual spots.
Wahoo’s Jeff Borreson, Austin Watton and Taylor Murren were poised to lead the Wahoo team toward a possible top 3 finish and a trip to state. All three were playing well late in the year and felt good about their chances. Unfortunately a slow start by Borreson, and a late faltering by Watton sealed the fate of the two seniors. Borreson never was able to really get on track and the wind and course conditions made a comeback impossible.
After a solid front side where Watton found himself sitting in 8th place, things looked likely for a trip to state. Going into the 15th Watton needed to play bogie golf to assure a spot in the state meet, but unfortunately a double on the par 3 15th triggered a slew of mistakes that ultimately left the senior sitting in 13th place and out of the tournament.
Taylor Murren began the day with consistency and remained there throughout the meet. Murren shot a front 9 46 which included plenty of ups and downs, and was looking out of the mix until it became clear that all of the other players in the meet were shooting the same way. Murren was sitting in great shape on the back side coming into the 18th hole. With a 30-yard approach shot into the green, Murren shanked his sand wedge out of bounds and finished the hole with a double for a 44 and a final score of 90. It wasn’t until the last group of the day finished that Murren learned of his fate. Ninety was just good enough for 10th place and a second consecutive trip to state.
Murren will compete at the Pioneers Golf Course on Tuesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21.
