The Wahoo Lady Warriors ended their 2017 volleyball season with a 34-2 record and made history by winning their first-ever state championship!
“We are very proud of the girls,” commented Wahoo Head Volleyball Coach Trish Larson. “We were dreaming big from the very beginning and really wanted a state championship trophy. It was a picture perfect ending to the season.”
Junior outside hitter Elly Larson led the Warrior attack with 384 kills. Junior middle blocker Kyla Swanson added another 328 kills and 68 blocks.
“Elly and Kyla are consistent hitters with a lot of power,” Coach Larson said.
Senior outside hitter Maddie Larson contributed 185 kills, 44 aces, and was second on the team in digs with 310.
“Maddie was playing her best volleyball of her career at the end of the season. She had some great defensive plays and smart shots,” Coach Larson added.
Freshman Elle Glock contributed 213 kills and led the team in aces with 54.
“Elle doesn’t play like a freshman. She stays composed and consistent and gets the job done,” said Coach Larson.
Sophomore Lillie Mann added another 68 kills and came up with some big kills at critical points of the season.
“We were a team with a lot of depth and many weapons this year. These girls have developed into some very well-rounded volleyball players who can play any position on the court. They are a very competitive group of girls who know how to win,” Coach Larson stated.
Senior setter Kinsley Tingelhoff ran the offense, ending the season with 1,044 assists. Tingelhoff also broke the NSAA C-1 state record for kills in a career with 3,896.
“Kinsley did an excellent job quarterbacking our team,” commented Larson. “She distributes the ball well and makes excellent decisions, making her one of the top setters in class C-1.”
Libero Morgan Marotz finished the season with team high 366 digs and 563 serve receptions.
On Marotz, Coach Larson stated, “Morgan is an outstanding defender, out of system setter, and is one of our top servers. She kept our team in system so we could run our offense.“
Coach Larson concluded her comments: “Seniors Maddie Larson, Kinsley Tingelhoff, and Morgan Marotz will be missed. The seniors were a big part of our success over the years. They end their career with a 117-20 record, three conference championships, two trips to State, and a State Championship. It doesn’t get much better than that!”
