Wahoo Elementary Celebrates 'Read Across America' with Seventh Annual 'Green Eggs and Ham' Breakfast
Reading Stressed as a Priority for All Students
Breakfast at the Elementary with Green Eggs and Ham, and The Cat in The Hat and Sam I Am. Wahoo Elementary celebrated its seventh annual Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast on Tuesday, February 28.
WPS Nurse Mary Specht is responsible for organizing this event each year; however, it takes many, many helpful volunteers to make the event come together. WPS puts on this activity in honor of Theodore Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss), and in his honor, Read Across America is celebrated on or near his birthday of March 2.
This year, millions of people joined Read Across America for a very special cause: to bring the gift of reading to students who have been affected by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Read Across America has teamed up with the National Education Association's Books Across America, a newly launched program to provide books to public schools in need, to raise money and collect books to send to schools and students impacted by last summer's devastating hurricanes.
"Reading to children is very important. It is one of the best ways to help a child learn to read," commented Title 1 Instructor Patti Inbody.
The special guest appearances this year were the Cat in the Hat, Thing One, Thing Two and for the first time, Sam I Am. These unusual visitors were brought to life by WPS Special Education Coordinator Jamie Beedle, WHS sophomores Laura Houfek and Kelsy Luers, and junior Erica Smith.
There were also a few special guests representing our town and state: Mayor Daryl Reitmeier, State Senator Chris Langemeier, Wahoo Sheriff Deputy Kevin Stukenholtz, and Governor Dave Heineman's wife, Sally Ganem.
"It's fun to have an event that focuses on reading because it is so important to society," stated Ganem.
This year Wahoo Elementary received overwhelming response to its requests for readers in each classroom. They would like to thank the following volunteer readers: Deb Wotipka, Linda Little, Carol Jasa, Elaine Stoupa, Jeff and Lori Anderson, Scott and Mary Tingelhoff, Neely Moser, Sally Ganem (First Lady of Nebraska), Barry Spurgin, Jan Hohl, Cathy Brooks, Jan Jonas, Angie McGill, Connie Syverson, Pete Steiner, Marilyn and Louis Klinzman, Rob Brigham, Bev Lindstom (Viola Swamp), Marlene McDonald, Maquita Kadavy, Glen and Deb Wilcox, Carrie Knowlton, and Patti Inbody. Please click on the following link to view a slide show of more pictures of the event: Read Across America & Dr. Seuss Day
