Green Eggs & Ham Breakfast
“I do not like them, Sam-I-Am. I do not like green eggs and ham!”
The people in Wahoo seem to have a different opinion about green eggs and ham than Sam-I-Am because many attended Wahoo Elementary School’s eleventh annual Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast on Feb. 28. Adults and children of all ages enjoyed a delicious breakfast from 7:30-8:30 a.m. At the cost of $1 for adults and 80 cents for students, the breakfast is a bargain.
The Cat in the Hat, played by freshman Lindsay Luers, Thing 1 and Thing 2, played by seniors Kelsey Luers and Laura Houfek, made a special appearance during the breakfast.
With the help of fifth-grader Gabby Shannon, the elementary school hosted very special guest Governor Dave Heineman. Shannon wrote Governor Heineman a letter asking him to join her and fellow classmates at the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast. About two weeks after sending the letter, Gabby got a phone call from the Governor’s secretary confirming that he would be at the breakfast.
When Governor Heineman arrived at the school, Gabby and her father WHS science teacher Steve Shannon were waiting to greet him. Gabby and Governor Heineman walked through the breakfast line and ate breakfast together. Gabby then showed Governor Heineman her classroom where he told his story about his connection to Wahoo Public Schools and answered questions asked by Mrs. Rezac’s fifth-grade class.
Six hundred and fifty people showed up to eat the delicious breakfast prepared by the Wahoo Elementary and Wahoo High School lunch staff. The green eggs and ham breakfast is sponsored annually by the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
