Fourteen WMS Students Attend First Annual Skills USA Middle School Leadership Conference
Students Make Good Showing in Variety of Contests
The Wahoo SkillsUSA Chapter participated in the first ever middle school leadership conference on March 23 at Omaha's Metro Community College's South Omaha campus. Wahoo brought 14 students to the conference with competitors in the following contests:
Applied Technical Math
Quiz Bowl
Technical Team Problem Solving
Metric 500
Power Point Presentation
The Quiz Bowl team (Lydia Privett, Christy Zheng, Jacey Sutton, Lauren Crockett) performed well, winning their round robin matches, but lost a close 2-point match to Westside Middle School in the semifinal round.
The Metric 500 cars brought by Joey Pestal (tied for 4th), Ethan Stratman (tied for 7th) and Brittany Vech (tied for 7th) performed well, all placing the top 10.
The Technical Team Problem Solving team had the challenge of taking a box of assorted materials and creating a structure that would hold a ping pong ball as high as possible from the top of a table. The structure had to be free standing and could not be attached to the table. The ball also had to be able to sit on top of the structure for 30 seconds without falling.
The Applied Technical Math contestants were Emily Colgan and Anthony Park. They worked hard on a challenging high school level applied math test, but finished out of the top three.
The PowerPoint team made up of Giselle Hernandez and Alexis Libal had to create a PowerPoint and then give a 5-7 minute presentation around a theme. The theme was "Preparing for Success in High School and Beyond." They brought home gold medals and a first place trophy! Great job Giselle and Alexis!
Congratulations to all the students on a great day at the first annual Middle School SkillsUSA Conference!
