Warrior One Act takes 'Runner Up' at Conference; Six recognized for 'Outstanding Performance'

Launch the media gallery 1 playerThe Capitol Conference One Act competition was held here at Wahoo High School all day yesterday, Nov. 24.
WHS hosted eight competing schools: Arlington, Ashland-Greenwood, D.C. West, Fort Calhoun, Raymond Central, Springfield-Platteview, Syracuse, and Wahoo.
It was a great day for "the stage"! We have much to be proud of as Warriors. Our One Act ensemble won the runner-up position for their performance of Jason Pizzarello's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Fifth Period.

Synopsis: To win his freedom from school bully Bugs, smart aleck Tommy offers to help him get a date to the prom with popular actress Stephanie Mezaluna. But the only way to get her attention is to convince her that Bugs is a famous actor in hiding, and as one cover-up leads to another, it's not long before a jock, Steve, is parading as Bug's slick New York agent, and Tommy is stuck trying to get Steve's sister a date to the prom. Of course, prom tickets are only on sale until fifth period -- so Tommy has to act fast and try to control the chaos in this wild high school hallway farce.

Kody Pope in his role as Bugs won Best Lead Actor for the conference. We also had Outstanding Performances awarded to Cole Talbert as Tommy, Kody Pope as Bugs, Kristen Callan as Stephanie, Shane Nixon as Chad Glamourville, Jenna Becker as Veronica, and Lydia Privett as Shelly.
As their Director, I told this cast to not worry about judges; just entertain the crowd. They did a great job. I think the best part of theatre is when you know you have connected with your audience. And personally, hearing laughter from an audience can be some of life's best medicine.
We have a District performance next Wednesday (Dec. 3) at Bennington High School. Then, our final performance is for you all. We will perform Friday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 p.m. in our school's theater, for a community performance. There is no charge to come out and enjoy this evening of One Act. It is our way of saying 'thank you' to all of you who support us and sacrifice for us, so we can do what we love, theatre.
