2020 Warrior One Act fine-tunes performance of "Selfie"
Cast/crew prepares for Nov. 25 Conference & Dec. 1 District competitions
Wahoo High School's One-Act Play Production cast and crew will compete at the Trailblazer Conference Tournament at Platteview High School on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
Because of COVID-19, schools were asked to submit videos of their performances for the judges to review. WHS alum Kate DeCoste is the play's director. WHS English Teacher John Minnick assists DeCoste with the production.
This year's play is "Selfie," written by Bradley Hayward. The plot features eight high school seniors as they prepare for their futures facing bullies, parents, peer pressure, serious illness, and their own self-judgment. As they document their year, one click at a time, they come to realize life is not what other people see; it's about the pictures they have of themselves.
The team also will compete at the Class B District 2 competition at North Bend High School on Tuesday, Dec. 1. As of now, Wahoo students will present their play live for the judges; however, no audience will be admitted because of COVID-19 guidelines. A time for a streaming performance for WHS students and the community will be determined.
Minnick said that this year's cast worked very hard given the circumstances, and probably worked together as a team better than any other production he's worked on at WHS.
"We've had to negotiate some interesting circumstances with this play," Minnick said. "We're all taking it one day at a time. Kate DeCoste came up with creative staging that allows the actors to socially distance, yet still create the dramatic situations and tension that make a play entertaining."
"Selfie" is produced by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc., of New York City.
The cast of characters include:
Nicole, played by Sydney Barnes (Grace Darling understudy)
Zack, played by Sam DuBois (Cody Bailey understudy)
Laura, played by Olivia Scott (Myranda Lihs understudy)
Kaitlyn, played by Cadence Bailar
Tyler, played by Dawson Rafteseth (Logan Scott understudy)
Jessie, played by Emma Bruce (Kylie Warford understudy)
Morgan, played by Caleb Malousek (Logan Scott understudy)
Sam, played by Hayli Ruble (Grace Darling and Jakkie Kahler understudies)
