Congratulations Warrior girls basketball team on taking 3rd place in the 2013 Girls State Basketball Tournament! After a tough loss Friday night against Kearney Catholic, Wahoo came back strong on Saturday to take down the Tournament's #1 seed Chadron in the Class C1 consolation game, 66-60! Way to go Warriors!

Both teams began the night with some nervous energy, missing many of their first shot attempts. Free throws by Darcy Barry put the Warriors on the board first, but a three-possession run by the Shamrocks enabled them to take a 6-3 lead.  

Warriors corrected their defensive flaws on the inbounds and didn’t allow Chohon to dominate the inside anymore. Warriors trailed 5-6 at the end of quarter one.

The second quarter began with a right side three-pointer by Caroline Hohl, giving the Warriors an 8-6 lead. Wahoo’s half court press and zone defense really got tough and caused Scotus to turn the ball over six times this quarter. A steal by Barry and an assist by Gabby Shannon gave Tschida Johnson her first points of the game.

“Gabby’s defensive rebound, bust out and court awareness to Darcy Barry were a huge momentum builder this quarter,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.  

Warriors led at half 14-11.

Things only got better and the Warriors controlled the tempo of the game at both ends of the court. The Warriors usually have around 15 possessions a quarter, but strategy was to stay ahead of the game and use the clock in our favor. The Scotus Shamrocks played defense for long periods of time and Warriors connected on four of their eight possessions, ending the third quarter up 23-17.

Wahoo continued to use the clock and play smart and strong. Fourth quarter came down to a free throw contest, and the Warriors sank 10-14 from the charity line.  

“My girls did such a great job tonight. I think we took four minutes off the clock in one possession alone!” Walker added.

The Wahoo Warriors took the Sub-District victory over Columbus Scotus 33-24.

Warriors were led in scoring with Barry (10) and Hohl (9). Sam Grandgenett led the team with six rebounds and three steals.

Wahoo took a comfortable lead after eight minutes of play against Lakeview in the first round of sub-districts.  

The run began with a basket by Caroline Hohl, followed by another by Tschida Johnson. Darcy Barry extended the lead by hitting a three-pointer from the right corner, and a Samantha Grandgenett assist to Gabby Shannon gave the Warriors a 9-2 lead.   

The quarter finished with a left side baseline three by Taylor Otte, pushing the Warriors to a 12-4 lead.

Wahoo started the second quarter strong by pulling away with a 9-2 performance in the first six possessions, extending the lead to 21-6. Johnson accounted for seven of her 13, and Bailey Brigham scored off a Warrior steal and assist from Otte.   

The Warriors went on a cold spell for the remainder of the last seven possessions. The game slowed; however, Wahoo held a 21-9 lead heading into the locker room.

Lakeview’s aggressiveness and gnawing defense made it tough for the Warriors to get into a consistent rhythm. Regardless, Wahoo’s defense forced Lakeview into ten turnovers this quarter, and the Warriors’ saving free throws allowed Wahoo to stay in command of a 32-18 lead.

Both teams came out fourth quarter shooting the ball well. Wahoo shot nine of nine from the charity stripe, and Grandgenett and Hohl had the touch on the outside jumpers. Wahoo outscored Lakeview in the final period 18-16 and took the victory 50-34.

Scoring was led by Johnson (13), Barry (12) and Hohl (9). Grandgenett led the team with eight rebounds. Johnson led in steals (5) and assists (4).

A steal and lay up by Darcy Barry gave Wahoo its only lead of the night.  

First quarter was a slow, drawn out one. Both teams had their share of turnovers and not much scoring for long periods of time. Tschida Johnson was sent to the bench in foul trouble very early in the game, and the Warriors struggled to get any kind of rhythm.  

The Cavs' aggressiveness and a few more finishes gave them a 9-4 edge after the first period of play.

Warriors tried to get themselves back in the game second quarter. Another opening steal by Barry assisted Samantha Grandgenett for a layup, giving a little spark to the Warriors, but a three-pointer by Thiele and a three by Meduna put it out. Neumann led 15-7.

A time out helped refocus the Warriors. Barry and Caroline Hohl came out and both hit big three’s to bring the game back into perspective; however, the Warriors failed to take care of the ball, and the Cavaliers scored on two steals. Neumann’s Nelson then hit the three-point buzzer shot and boosted Neumann to a 24-15 lead.

Third quarter began with Warriors putting in the first score, but Cavs canceled the shot with a three-pointer. A nice five-possession, ten-point run by the Warriors started to shed some light for Wahoo. Johnson, Grandgenett, and Hohl accounted for the ten points, but through the great run, Neumann was able to pull the offensive board and put backs for four points. Wahoo put up 16 points this quarter, but gave up 15, ending third quarter down 31-39.

Fourth quarter began with a Warrior turnover that led to an easy bucket for the Cavs. The Warriors kept fighting back, but could not get any breaks. A layup by Gabby Shannon brought the Warriors within six, but two three’s and a deuce by the Cavs canceled any kind of momentum generated by the Warriors.  

Wahoo continued the fight until the end. Taylor Otte’s jump shot and free throw pulled the Warriors within seven; however, Wahoo was forced to foul and Neumann took the win 55-45.

“We didn’t guard the shooters well tonight, and we played out of sync,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “Bishop Neumann shot eight of 16 threes tonight and stepped it up. It’s a wake up call for us.”

Warrior scoring was led by Grandgenett (15), and Barry and Hohl with eight each. Rebounding was led by Johnson (5) and Barry led in assists (4) and steals (5).

Warrior Girls Earn Conference Season Championship (7-1) with Home Win over Arlington

Assists by Samantha Grandgenett and Gabby Shannon to Tschida Johnson gave the Warriors a 4-0 start against the Arlington Eagles Friday night.  

For the next possession, Grandgenett owned the offensive board and scores. Her steal led to a layup by Darcy Barry, giving Warriors the advantage. Wahoo went on a few dry possessions, but spark came from a great steal, and an and-one layup by Taylor Otte fueled the Warriors to a 12-5 run.

Arlington was able to stay in the game by hitting a couple of threes. Wahoo lead 15-10 after eight minutes of play.

Second quarter began with a bang! Grandgenett stole the ball, threw it to Barry and onto Caroline Hohl for a quick score. Johnson went off for the next four points, and Hohl’s strong offensive board produced two more. Feeling it, Hohl drained the three and Warriors went on an 11-0 run. Barry and Johnson finished up the quarter and the Warriors lead at halftime 35-20.

Wahoo continued to outplay Arlington in the third quarter, and defense was solid, allowing few opportunities for the Eagles. Quick transition points by Hohl, Grandgenett, Barry and Brigham early in the quarter left no hope for the Eagles. The quarter ended with Alicia Iversen assisting Kelsey Tomjack with a right side 20-footer!

Warriors ended the third up 51-26.

The fourth quarter dittoed the other three. Defense was strong and the Warrior offense was consistent. Grandgenett became unstoppable on the drive to the basket and Hohl kept the hot shooting. All the Warriors were able to come in and have a part in this sweet victory.  

“I’m really proud of this team. The girls dominated every quarter tonight and guaranteed themselves the honors of regular season Conference Champs,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.   

Wahoo’s defense was forceful and caused Arlington to turn the ball over 23 times. The Warriors took the win 66-32 and moved their record to 13-8.

Warriors were led in scoring by Hohl (17), Barry (14), Johnson (12), Grandgenett (11). Hohl led in rebounds (8) and Gabby Shannon had five. Grandgenett led in steals (5), and Barry led in  assists (6).

The Gretna Dragons took an early six-point lead on the Warriors; however, Darcy Barry’s top of key three pointer put the Warriors on the board. Warriors began to attack and push on transition to match the Dragon force. Wahoo trailed by a slim 11-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Wahoo began to dominate the second quarter. Gabby Shannon scored first, then a three from Samantha Grandgenett, followed by an offensive rebound put back by Caroline Hohl. Warriors finally held the lead, but a three-pointer by Gretna’s Janovich gave it back.  

The Warriors and Dragons battled back and forth until Grandgenett layed it up and took back the lead. Seconds later Shannon busted out on the defensive rebound and threw a bullet pass down the sideline to Taylor Otte, who then assisted Hohl for a huge three, lifting the Warriors to a 30-23 lead.  

The Warriors missed some opportunities late in the quarter, and the Dragons fought back ending the quarter 31-29 in Wahoo’s favor.

“What a game!” said Coach Linda Walker. “We will need to come out second half and continue the attack and take care of the ball.”

Wahoo came out third quarter determined to make another run. Tschida Johnson and Caroline Hohl dropped in the first four points. A quick touch pass by Shannon to Johnson produced an and-one play. Warriors lead by five.  

The Dragons didn’t panic and came charging back on two back-to-back transition buckets, another two and a trey ending the quarter 41-44 in Gretna’s favor.

Gretna went to their full court zone press to slow the game up, and the Warriors tried hard once more to match the intensity on the court, keeping the game within five points. It was, however, a three-possession run by the Dragons that opened the spread up to eight points and cast out the Warriors’ chance at the win.   

“Gretna got the edge on us, and we had to foul. We really challenged Class B #2 Gretna. The score doesn’t show what a great game it was,” Walker commented.

The Warriors were led in scoring by Hohl (15) and Johnson (15). Hohl pulled ten rebounds and Darcy Barry assisted for six.

Wahoo Advances to 12-7 with Decisive Consolation Victory over Platteview

Darcy Barry began the crusade against Platteview in the consolation game by stealing the ball and finishing on an open court lay-up. A four possession scoring by Tschida Johnson and Gabby Shannon pushed the Warriors to an early 9-5 advantage; however, the Trojans didn’t waste time, and scored on a few transition baskets to end the quarter 13-12.

Wahoo tightened up its defense and took away Platteview’s transition game. This helped widen the point spread. Johnson scored the first five points of the quarter, and a steal by Barry led to a transition bucket by Bailey Brigham. Two three’s by Barry and one three by Brigham pushed the Warriors ahead 29-18 at halftime.

The third quarter, the Warriors continued to play with ease and coasted to a 43-26 lead. Barry and Grandgenett sank the treys and Johnson, Caroline Hohl and Shannon went off on the two’s.

Wahoo dominated the fourth quarter as well, and the bench did an outstanding job of taking care of the ball and finishing some awesome plays.

Kelsey Tomjack was able to score on a give and go assisted by Alicia Iversen, and a pass from Kaylynn Knuth to Tomjack sealed the third place victory at 56-34.

“This game proved to us that we can play hard night after night,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

The Warriors were led in scoring by Barry and Johnson with 14 a piece, and Grandgenett with 11 points. Hohl pulled ten rebounds and Barry assisted for five.

Ashland Overtakes Warrior Girls in Conference Semifinals

“One bad quarter,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.

The Warriors and Bluejays were deadlocked 16-16 after eight minutes in the semi-final round of conference play. The Warriors were having difficulty stopping Ashland’s #14 Kaitlyn Thomas, who didn’t play in the first go around.  

Second quarter favored Ashland. The Bluejays took a 17-3 advantage over the Warriors in the first nine possessions. Wahoo committed too many fouls and gave Ashland the free throw advantage early, ending the half down 26-40.    

“We were in good position and we gave up six points to offensive rebound put backs,” Walker commented. “Our defense must pick up and we need to attack on offense to get ourselves back in the game.”

Wahoo took to heart what needed to be done and fought like crazy in the third quarter to get back into the game. A big momentum shift favored the Warriors. Caroline Hohl connected on an and-one play, and Darcy Barry’s kick out pass to Samantha Grandgenett for the three gave the Warriors the momentum needed to ignite a belief in the fourth quarter.

Warriors trailed 41-48 heading into the final period.

The Wahoo attack was on, and the Warriors scored in seven of the first nine possessions. Barry found Gabby Shannon on transition and the Warriors took the lead by one. The crowd went wild. A no call on a shot could have sent the Warriors to the line for a possible three-point lead. Instead, Ashland pounded the ball inside and scored, taking back the lead.

Ashland’s timeout, defensive change, and scheme to pound the ball into their post proved to stop the Warriors from another great comeback.

“We took the right shots down the stretch, but they just didn’t fall for us tonight,” said Walker. “I’m so proud of how we battled back the second half. It just shows how much guts we have!”

Warriors lost to Ashland 63-57 and will take on Platteview in the consolation game.

Wahoo was led in scoring by Hohl with 18, Grandgenett with 15 and Barry with ten. Johnson and Gabby Shannon led with seven rebounds each.

Warrior Girls Win First Round of Conference Tourney
11-6 Wahoo Takes On Ashland in Fri. Semifinal (6:00 @ Arlington)

The Wahoo Warriors took on Raymond Central in first round of conference play at home.

A blocked shot and steal by Tschida Johnson ignited a Warrior 9-0 run with Darcy Barry, Johnson and Caroline Hohl leading the way. Several Warrior turnovers soon occurred and opened the door for Raymond Central to score. Gabby Shannon’s block shot regained the momentum and led to a score by Bailey Brigham. Barry’s left wing three gave Wahoo a 14-2 advantage after eight minutes of play.

Warriors went cold for many minutes of the second quarter, and too many turnovers would not let the domination continue. The Mustangs were able to rattle in several scores to keep themselves in the game, but Warriors made a nice run toward the end of the quarter with Shannon finishing on two two’s and Brigham’s and one.

Despite the slow quarter Wahoo led at halftime 25-14.

Wahoo tried to get back the intensity, but the Mustangs were determined and hustled to every loose ball. Despite being outscored 14-9 this period, Wahoo managed to keep the lead with Barry, Johnson and Hohl connecting on four shots, ending the quarter 34-28.

The Warriors turned up the heat in the fourth period, and a three-pointer by Grandgenett cushioned the lead. Raymond Central was forced to foul and the Warriors connected on 9 of 13 free throws down the stretch to take the win 48-38.

“We played well in the first and fourth quarters,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “It was a strange in between, but very similar to our first meeting. Raymond Central has just enough savvy to cause inconsistency.”

Warriors were led in scoring by Barry with 17 points and six rebounds. Johnson and Hohl added eight a piece and combined for 11 rebounds.

Warrior Girls Pull Out Home Win over Talented Norfolk Catholic Team
5th Straight Victory Advances Wahoo to 10-6

The Wahoo Warriors came out determined to control the tempo of the game Friday night against the ranked Norfolk Catholic Knights.

The Knights took the first three points of the game, but the Warrior press began to cause havoc to Norfolk Catholic, forcing three consecutive turnovers. Soon after the Warriors got rolling as Tschida Johnson scored the first six points, followed by a huge three-pointer from Darcy Barry.   

Warriors took a 9-5 lead in the first nine possessions.   

The Knights responded with the next six points; however, the Warriors cancelled the run by converting on a transition bucket. Bailey Brigham came up big, hitting the right side trey, ending the period in Wahoo’s favor: 14-11.

The second quarter was a fairly even matchup between the two teams. Barry finished on three of her shots, helping the Warriors keep the advantage. The Warriors’ zone defense limited NC’s best player from getting any kind of rhythm in the first half and Wahoo led 22-20 at half.

Caroline Hohl and Samantha Grandgenett began the second half attack and pushed a six-point advantage; however, the Knights answered back by hitting four of four from the charity line, keeping the game tight.  

Barry came up with a huge three pointer to give her team relief, but Catholic answered back again trailing by one. Seconds later Grandgenett drove the baseline and Hohl dittoed the action, giving the Warriors a five-point cushion to end the third quarter 37-31.
 
Wahoo came out the fourth quarter with the momentum on their side, but a three pointer by the Knights cut the game to two. Barry responded by hitting a quick two. Free throws down the stretch were the determining factor of the game. Both teams went five for seven from the line.

The Warriors clung to the lead, gaining a huge victory over the ranked Norfolk Catholic Knights 46-43.

Scoring leaders for the Warriors were Barry with 17, six rebounds and four steals, and Johnson with 13 points and seven rebounds. Hohl added 8 points.

Warrior Girls Post 4th Straight Win at Raymond Central
9-6 Wahoo Hosts Norfolk Catholic Friday Night

The Warriors held the reigns on the Mustangs from the beginning to the end, but it wasn’t the most exciting game to watch for two of the four quarters.

Wahoo took charge and rallied to a 16-8 first quarter lead. Things appeared to be heading in a good direction, while the Warrior defense was strong and the offense was able to connect on nine of 15 possessions.  

The game plan changed dramatically for the next 16 minutes, and scoring was a struggle for both teams. The Warrior defense stayed steady though this storm and forced the Mustangs to turn the ball over six times.

Eventually midway through the second quarter, Bailey Brigham broke the dry shooting spell, hitting two of two from the charity line; however, Raymond Central outscored the Warriors 5-4 during this period.

Wahoo fans were hopeful to see their Warriors come alive for the third quarter, but the dark cloud still loomed and the game remained drab. The third period ended with a mere edge 22-20 over RC.

Finally, a huge spark came early in the fourth quarter when the Warriors changed up their defense and found the stampede that had been missing for so long.

“Sam got it to turn around for us,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.

Grandgenett nailed the three, stole the ball, and finished on the layup to give Wahoo an eight-point advantage in the first five possessions. Strong rebounding by Gabby Shannon and quick outlet passes ignited the transition game for the Warriors that eventually casted any hope for Raymond Central.

The Warriors finally found their groove, turned steals into points and went on to win 40-29 against conference foe Raymond Central.  

“It was ugly for 16 minutes, but I’m proud we were able to hold it together and pour it on fourth quarter,” Walker added.

Wahoo was led by Grandgenett with 18 point. Tschida Johnson added ten points and nine rebounds. Darcy Barry led in steals with seven.

Warrior Girls Annihilate D.C. West at Home
8-6 Wahoo Travels to Raymond Central Tuesday Night

D.C. West came out on fire at the arch hitting four of five threes by three different players, but the Warriors stayed calm.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to get their fire started. Darcy Barry drained two three’s and another came from Taylor Otte. Wahoo’s defense revved up and caused the Falcons trouble by forcing eight turnovers. Tschida Johnson and Bailey Brigham continued to add scores and gave Wahoo a slim edge, 17-13.

Wahoo put together an impressive second quarter and forced the Falcons to turn the ball over 13 more times. The Warriors exploded on a 27-2 run, scoring on 13 of the 20 possessions of the quarter.  

“It was great to see us really dominate,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.

The Warriors led at half 44-15, giving up only two points in the second quarter.

The Warriors challenged themselves at half time to keep the tempo in their favor and play a strong second half.

The third quarter tempo was set after the Warriors connected on the first eight of nine possessions. Samantha Grandgenett and Barry took turns draining the three while Johnson and Otte added their sweet touches at the two-point range. Wahoo continued to build the lead and ended the third quarter 64-28.

“We gave up five more points the fourth quarter and the bench came in and did a great job for us, “ said Walker. “They kept the tempo up and kept shooting for our goal.”

Arms were raised and the crowd cheered when Alicia Iversen pulled down the offensive board and scored her first career points.

The night ended with a banked-in free throw by Maddy Partridge to give the Warriors an 80-33 victory over the Falcons.

Warriors were led in scoring by Barry with a game-high of 24 points, hitting six of ten from the three-point range, and stealing and assisting for five each. Grandgenett added 17 points, three steals and four assists, and Johnson added 15. Caroline Hohl led in rebounds with ten.

Warrior Girls Leave Platteview Victorious
Wahoo Improves to 7-6; Hosts D.C. West Saturday

Warriors took a road trip to Springfield to take on Class B Platteview Trojans on Friday night.  

The Warriors came out ready to take their second challenge of the week and jumped to an 11-7 lead. Four Warriors had their hand in first quarter scoring, but it was Caroline Hohl who came up big with an early three pointer, and the last shot of the quarter

“Our salty defense was giving the Trojans fits on offense, and our transition passes to each other were key to our lead,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.

The Warriors extended the lead by a significant margin to 22-9 in the first six possessions of the second quarter, but four Warrior turnovers slowed the assault. Platteview was then able to stay within ten, and gain confidence.

Warriors led 24-14 heading into the locker room at the half.

The Warriors found themselves back on their heels in the third quarter, as the Trojans came at them in full force, closing in by two points. A huge three pointer by Sam Grandgenett at the end of the quarter gave Wahoo the relief they needed to keep the lead and gain back the momentum, ending the quarter 32-30.

Wahoo’s junk defense placed tremendous stress on Platteview’s offense the last eight minutes of play. The Trojans were not able to get any kind of rhythm, and the junk defense proved to be what would get the job done.

Gabby Shannon scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, followed by a three-pointer by Darcy Barry to build a five-point lead. The lead fell back to two points after Platteview’s #2 Feller drained a three pointer from the right side baseline. The next four points were all Tschida Johnson. Wahoo had numerous free throw opportunities to win by 15, but none would fall.  

The Wahoo Warriors took the sweet conference victory over the Platteview Trojans 41-35.

Wahoo was led in scoring by Grandgenett and Johnson with ten points each, and Hohl with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Wahoo Warriors got off to a great start against Omaha Mercy Tuesday evening, leading 20-11 after the first eight minutes of play.  

Samantha Grandgenett and Darcy Barry were dual scoring contributors, accounting for 15 of the 20 points tallied this period.

The Warrior attack slowed in the second quarter, and Omaha Mercy was able to stay within five at half time. Wahoo managed to keep the lead 30-25.

At halftime we talked about taking care of business on defense and attacking on the offensive end and setting some goals.

“The half time talk hit home,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.   

A more energized, determined Warrior team came out for the second half.

Barry set the tone by stealing the ball four times in the first five possessions. Her team responded and cashed in on a 17-6 quarter. Gabby Shannon fed some awesome look-away passes to her teammates, and the Warriors pushed the lead to 47-31.

The Warriors’ defense held Mercy to six points, and forced nine turnovers in the third quarter.

A great third quarter led to a great fourth quarter finish. A beautiful touch pass assist from Grandgenett to Barry was a crowd pleaser, and set the tone once again for the Warriors.

“Our team defense held Mercy to 11 points in the second half, and our rebounding was solid tonight,” Walker commented.

The bench was cleared in the remaining minutes, and all 13 players contributed. The Warriors rolled to a 60-36 victory over Omaha Mercy Monarchs.

Shannon and Hohl owned 19 combined rebounds tonight, which gave the Warriors an advantage on transition. Barry stole the ball eight times and Grandgenett assisted for five.

The Warriors were led by three players in double digits: Grandgenett (16), Tschida Johnson (15), and Barry (12).

Crete jumped to a 19-10 lead on Wahoo. The Warrior’s man-to-man defense failed to stop the Cardinals’ attack to the basket, and the Warrior zone gave up the outside shots; however, the Warriors were able to put up ten points, but couldn’t connect on their free throws to keep the score in check.  

The Warriors found some success by playing some junk defense in the second quarter. Crete Cardinals went scoreless for eight possessions and the box–n-one took them out of their game. Five different Warriors took off on the scoring this quarter hitting big threes, free throws and two’s. The Warriors closed in on the Cardinals, but turnovers wouldn’t allow them to get any closer than five before half.  

Warriors fought to get back and headed into half time down 28-33.

Neither team had an exceptional third quarter, but Crete held the advantage. The Warriors trailed by five for the majority of this quarter until Crete’s #11 Shaw hit a big three from the right side wing.  

“That was a key shot!” said Head Coach Linda Walker.

After that, Crete’s plan was to take care of the ball, delay the game and run the clock out.

Caroline Hohl almost took Crete’s plan away with her intense attack on the ball, but unfortunately we were called for a foul. Wahoo trailed 33-41 heading into the final period.

The start of the fourth quarter did not pan out for the Warriors. Crete hit the first shot of the quarter, and the Warriors were forced to match up. Miscommunication on the floor led to an open three-point shot for the opponents, stretching the point spread to 33-46.   

The Warriors kept trying to make it happen and attacked to get to the line, but Wahoo was only able to grab one of two every time at the line.  

“We ran our plays well down the stretch, and set ourselves up for scores. The shots just wouldn’t fall for us tonight,” Walker commented.  

Crete defeated Wahoo 54-43.

Wahoo was led in scoring by Tschida Johnson with 13 points and six rebounds. Darcy Barry added eight points, four steals and three assists.

The Warriors began their crusade by attacking Syracuse’s 1-3-1. Tschida Johnson put up the first nine points of the game and set the tone for a great evening. After eight minutes of play, the Warriors led 13-10.  

Wahoo rocked it the second quarter. Darcy Barry and Samantha Grandgenett caught fire and stole the show early, while assisting each other and taking turns scoring. Both combined for 13 points and extended the lead to 26-10. Next, Bailey Brigham hit a three and Caroline Hohl cleaned up the quarter by scoring the last eight points.

Wahoo’s defense caused Syracuse to turn the ball over nine times this quarter, and the Warriors took a comfortable 36-19 lead.

The Warriors came out of half time energized and explosive and kept their intensity up. Barry and Grandgenett’s ‘hot’ shooting continued, and the team’s defense slowed the Rockets’ opportunities. A steal by Gabby Shannon finished Johnson’s 11 points for the game, and Taylor Otte and Brigham tallied for three more this quarter.   

Wahoo was able to extend its lead 55-27 heading into the final period. The Warrior bench was able to gain some valuable minutes. The Warrior crowd enjoyed the hustle from the youth, and cheered when Otte hit Maddy Partridge for two.

The Warriors dominated Syracuse 65-41.

“Our passing against the 1-3-1 tonight was exceptional. We found the open shooters,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “This win felt good!”

Three Warriors in double figures led the Warriors in scoring: Grandgenett (19), Barry (16) and Johnson (11). Shannon led in rebounds with seven. Grandgenett led in steals with five and Barry assisted for four.

The 2012 Wahoo Holiday Tournament was played Friday and Saturday, December 28-29. The tournament included Wahoo, Bishop Neumann, Elkhorn South and Lincoln Christian High Schools.

Wahoo did not get off to a good start against Class B Elkhorn South. Six turnovers in 11 possessions put the Warriors down 4-16 after the first eight minutes of play.

“Our attack is missing and are playing so passively,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

It was Bailey Brigham who tried to get the Warrior attacking game going by drawing the fouls. She was able to connect on four opportunities to keep the game in perspective; however, it still wasn’t enough to close the 12-point deficit. The Warriors headed into the locker room down 16-28.

Neither team ignited the fire in the third quarter, but Wahoo did make some advances by outscoring their opponent 6-5.  

A new and “about time” Warrior team showed up the fourth quarter.

“Finally, we were playing to win this game,” Walker said.   

The fourth quarter provided some excitement for the fans and gave the Warriors hope. Tschida Johnson kicked off the fourth quarter with an offensive rebound put-back, followed by a Samantha Grandgenett three-point swish.  

The Warriors began to close the gap on the Storm by transitioning and making few mistakes; however, time was ticking and the Warriors needed to foul to get the ball back. Elkhorn South was able to connect on 10-12 free throws and defeat the Warriors 45-43. On a positive note, Wahoo did outscored the Storm 21-12 in the final moments of the game.

“Take away our devastating first quarter and the championship win is ours. I was sure proud of our fourth quarter performance. I feel my team is back and ready to start the New Year strong,” Walker added.

Grandgenett led the Warrior scoring with 16, and Brigham with eight. Johnson led in rebounds with seven, with Grandgenett and Gabby Shannon each adding five.

A refocused Warrior team came ready to battle the 6-1 Lincoln Christian Crusaders in the first round of the Holiday Tournament.

Warriors led 10-7 after the first grace period. Samantha Grandgenett started the scoring by nailing the three from the right side wing. Warriors’ defense held the Crusaders to only seven points.

Lincoln Christian exploded on Wahoo the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 16-7. Christian’s Anderson went off for eight points alone, and the Warriors’ inconsistent defense this quarter allowed the Crusaders to lead at half 17-23.

The Warriors regrouped during the third quarter, and Tschida Johnson ignited the spark. Aggressive defense by Taylor Otte and Bailey Brigham matched the quickness of Lincoln Christian’s guards. Wahoo was back in the game and trailed by only one, and the momentum shifted in Wahoo’s favor.   

Gabby Shannon made a beautiful assist to Caroline Hohl to start the fourth quarter; however, Lincoln Christian cancelled the lead. It was the next possession that Hohl got aggressive, and pulled the offensive board and scored. Wahoo was back on top. Otte then finished on the next possession followed by Shannon’s two-point conversion. Free throws by Darcy Barry and Hohl were huge to keeping the lead.

Wahoo went on a 10-3 advantage.  

“What an exciting fourth quarter! I could tell my girls were focused and wanted this game badly!” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

Lincoln Christian’s Anderson nailed a three-pointer to bring the game back into suspense; however, the Warriors still held a two-point lead.  

The Warriors continued to press and took the victory by outscoring the Crusaders 19-14 in the fourth quarter. Wahoo advances to the championship game by defeating Lincoln Christian 49-45.

Johnson led scoring with 16 points, and Hohl added 12 points. Johnson led the rebounding with seven, and Grandgenett and Hohl each rebounded for six.

On Friday night after snow fell and no practice since the loss to Lincoln Lutheran, Wahoo Warriors took on 2012 State Champion Guardian Angel Central Catholic in West Point.  

“We knew this game would be a challenge for us. One, because we’ve been in a funk lately, and two, they’re solid,” said Head Coach Linda Walker.

Wahoo started the game well. Caroline Hohl was a key factor in keeping the Warriors in the game early. She was able to drive and draw the foul, hitting four of four from the line. Samantha Grandgenett then took over by draining two three’s. The Warriors actually led 10-4 midway through the first quarter. Warrior turnovers soon appeared, and CC’s scoring frenzy began taking the lead, ending the first period 18-10.  

The big difference in the second quarter was shot opportunities and taking care of the ball. West Point shot the ball 15 more times than the Warriors, and no matter who was in the game the play was solid. For the Warriors, turnovers and not enough balanced scoring and depth made it impossible to keep it closer than 13 points.     

“Honestly, I was happy seeing us play hard and play together,” Walker stated.

The second half was a different story.  

“I think we were out of gas and it showed. Gabby, who hardly played in the first half, committed her third foul right away. I knew we were in trouble,” commented Walker.  

GACC converted on 12 of 17 possessions this quarter alone and pushed their lead to 67-41. Warrior lax passes converted into CC steals and lay-ups.

Wahoo kept playing hard, but could not produce a scoring product that could make a difference in the game.

Guardian Angel’s stats led in about every positive category including shot attempts (83-46), shooting percentage, rebounds, steals, assists and fewer TO’s (28-11). Guardian Angels played 14 players while the Warriors cleared their bench of 10.

In the end, the Warriors took their fourth defeat of the season to Central Catholic 82-45.   

Grandgenett with 19 points and Hohl with 11 led the Warriors in scoring. Hohl and Tschida Johnson led in rebounds with four each.

Wahoo Prepares for Tough Match-Up at West Point GACC

It felt as if the Wahoo Warriors were back on track after the first nine minutes of play against Lincoln Lutheran. Warriors had balanced scoring and solid defensive play that allowed a favorable lead 17-11 after the first quarter.

Unfortunately the Warriors didn’t match the intensity needed the second quarter, and couldn’t take care of the ball. A huge storm of turnovers and lack of intensity allowed Lincoln Lutheran to score on eight of their next ten possessions. This eliminated the Warriors’ lead and put them down by nine heading into the locker-room at half.  

“Unbelievable,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

No real spark struck the Warriors for most of the third quarter until a small Warrior line up entered the game and caused LL to turn the ball over in the last four possessions. Wahoo trailed 25-37 after three.

Things started to click for the Warriors with their small line up. Bailey Brigham got the scoring going on a lay-up. Darcy Barry turned up her defense and stole the ball, assisting Taylor Otte for a three. Otte found herself wide open again at the trey and nailed the shot once more. Momentum was starting to favor the Warriors now, only down by four. A Warrior foul put LL to the line hitting one of one. Gabby Shannon pulled the offensive board and finished on an and-one play.  

Warriors trailed now by three, but the last opportunities favored Lincoln Lutheran through an offensive rebound, put back and free throws. Wahoo was not able to turn it into a come back, and ended up taking their third loss at home, 35-42.   

“We can play better than what we are demonstrating. It’s disappointing to lose to teams I know we should be winning to. Inconsistent play on defense and offense is killing our ability to get the job done. A floor leader needs to emerge soon,” Walker commented.

Samantha Grandgenett led scoring with nine, and Otte and Shannon both added six each. Shannon led in rebounds with seven and Barry led in steals with five.

A slow start caused the Warriors to fall behind and play catch up for most of the game.  

The Warriors were caught back on their heels as the Pioneers attacked the basket and outscored the Warriors 22-14 in the first quarter. Fort Calhoun’s 6’2” Westerguard and guard Nelson combined for 16 points in this quarter alone.  

“We needed to pick up our level of play on both ends,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

Darcy Barry scored her eight points this quarter to keep Wahoo somewhat close.

Wahoo’s intensity picked up extremely in the second quarter by outscoring Fort Calhoun 17-9, tying the game at 31. Wahoo didn’t allow many second opportunities and other Warriors came alive on offense.

Warrior fouls early in the third quarter put Calhoun to the line, and nine turnovers devastated any kind of advantage.   

“Fouls are errors and I knew this would haunt us,” Walker said.  

Gabby Shannon was able to connect on some scores along with a basket from Tschida Johnson. Fort Calhoun merely outscored the Warriors in the third quarter 6-9.

The fourth quarter was a back and forth exciting and frustrating battle for the Warriors. Barry, Shannon, Samantha Grandgenett, Caroline Hohl and Johnson all had their hands in the scoring this quarter, but getting back on defense hurt. Fort Calhoun would have an answer about every time within seconds.

“We played inconsistently tonight and an absent transition defense in the final period allowed the Pioneers some easy buckets. Missed free throws down the stretch hurt also,” Walker added.  

Warriors fell to the Pioneers in the last 30 minutes of the game 57-54. Wahoo shot 29 percent compared to the opponent’s 42 percent.

Barry led the Warriors with 13 points. Shannon added 12 and Grandgenett had 11. Hohl led the rebounds with nine, Shannon pulled seven and Johnson had six.

The Warriors held a slim 11-10 lead over the Wayne Blue Devils Friday night in the first eight minutes of play.  

Crazy passes and lack of strength made it difficult for the Warriors to go on any kind of favorable run.

“I could tell we were in for a long night,” stated Head Coach Linda Walker.  

It took seven possessions in the second quarter to ignite the Warrior machine. Bailey Brigham provided a huge spark for the Warriors by sinking two free throws and connecting on two other shots. Senior leadership soon got serious as Darcy Barry stole the ball two times and assisted Sam Grandgenett and Caroline Hohl for scores.

Despite turning the ball over 18 times, Wahoo held a small lead heading into the locker room at half, 25-22.

Warriors didn’t start the third quarter very well, and Coach Walker had to kill a time out.

“Our game plan at half time was not being executed, and I was not very happy,” Walker commented.  

The timeout proved to be effective. Wahoo turned up the heat and connected on the next eight of 11 possessions. Grandgenett scored nine of her 20 points alone this quarter, and Warriors led at the end of the third quarter 43-34.

Wayne tried to rally back in the fourth with their double teaming pressure, but the Warriors were able to capture their third season victory by defeating the Blue Devils 54-43.  

“This was a hard-fought battle for us after winning in double OT Tuesday evening. Physically and mentally we were tuckered tonight. I’m super proud of how we fought through adversity,” Walker said.

The Warriors were led in scoring by Grandgenett with 20 points and seven steals. Brigham had a varsity game high of 11 points and five rebounds. Barry led in assists with five.

The Ashland Bluejays led the entire game against the Wahoo Warriors on Tuesday evening, but the Warrior persistence lured, and huge plays took the win in double OT, 62-58!

Foul trouble and lack of intensity made it difficult for the Warriors to have any kind of advantage throughout the entire 32 minutes, although Gabby Shannon’s three baseline shots and Samantha Grandgenett’s free throw and deuce kept the Warriors close, trailing Ashland 13-16 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began with a right corner baseline three by Grandgenett, but the next nine possessions were owned by Ashland. Finally the spell broke with Darcy Barry’s three-point basket. Taylor Otte then followed up with a two-point lay-up conversion. Ashland was able to slow the Warriors once again, outscoring Wahoo 33-23 to end the half.

The Warriors came out third quarter with more intensity and momentum started to shift in Wahoo’s favor. Caroline Hohl and Tschida Johnson turned up the driving force and combined for 11 points, while Otte hit the three. Wahoo outscored Ashland 14-12, but still trailed 37-45 at the end of three.

The bound and determined Warriors continued to attack and keep the pressure on the Bluejays. Johnson’s penetration to the basket was powerful and huge free throws were made. With seconds to play a double screen allowed Grandgenett to hit the ‘BIG’ shot from the left corner baseline.  

“What an awesome job my team did in the fourth quarter! We didn’t panic, the execution was at its best, and Sam sank it! The fans went wild!” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

The Warriors’ “never quit” attitude was present in Double OT.

“Our fans helped us get this win,” Walker added.  

Otte hit the shot that took the game, and Johnson’s free throws ended Bluejay hope.

The Warriors were led by a game-high offensive performance by Johnson with 20 points, 14/17 free throws, and rebounded for ten. Grandgenett added 13 points, and Hohl and Shannon pulled seven rebounds a piece.   

Warrior Girls Suffer First Season Loss at Hands of Class B Powerhouse

Player to player, Wahoo Girls basketball matched up pretty well to undefeated Seward Saturday afternoon.  

After eight minutes of play the Seward Bluejays led 10-8. Darcy Barry and Gabby Shannon were doing a good job limiting All-Staters 5’10” Hannah Trvdy and 6’2” Courtney Zadina from much opportunity in their pick and roll action. Caroline Hohl put four points on the board, with Shannon and Taylor Otte adding four more. Great steals by Tschida Johnson and Hohl allowed Wahoo to stay within two.

Seward’s Zadina and a few other Bluejays accounted for 20 points in the second quarter, but the Warriors continued to stay in the game. Barry assisted Johnson two times, and Samantha Grandgenett pulled an offensive rebound to add two more. The Warriors’ transition was outstanding. Quick passes and court awareness by Shannon and Otte whizzed the ball down the floor for scores. Seward led at half 30-21.

The Warriors put the first three points on the board to trail the Bluejays by only six points. Seward’s Schultz answered the Warriors’ run with a baseline three-pointer. Bailey Brigham hit a beautiful three to cancel Seward’s momentum. Things were looking good for Wahoo, but then our chances came to an end. The All-Staters went off for 13 unanswered points.  

“We were there, but not playing close enough help side or close enough pressure on the 25 foot step back shots,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “Their run killed us mentally and physically.”  

The Warriors went from 6 down to 19 in the next five possessions and ended their vision of a possible upset.

Seward went on to win 40-67, continuing their winning streak.

Hohl had a tremendous game and led in scoring with 14 and rebounds with 7.

Warrior Girls Dominate Bennington in 2012-2013 Season Opener

It took some time, but Wahoo’s intense full court pressure defense and savvy shooting soon took over the Badgers.   

Samantha Grandgenett began the crusade by sinking one for two from the free-throw line, followed by a two-pointer from Darcy Barry. Grandgenett caught fire from the three-point line and Wahoo cruised to a 16-8 first quarter performance. The Warriors forced the Badgers to turn the ball over 11 times.

The defense and offense remained strong through the second quarter; however, foul trouble struck Tschida Johnson. Taylor Otte entered the game and brought raving quickness and intensity. Caroline Hohl, Grandgenett and Barry chipped in 12 more points this quarter and forced Bennington to turn the ball over 12 more times. The Warriors extended their lead to 28-12 entering half time.

A beautiful assist by Hohl to Johnson began the second half and several steals followed. A huge three-pointer by Barry extended the Warrior lead; however, Bennington capped on the next six of eight possessions. The next possessions were all Wahoo. Gabby Shannon drained the three at the top of the key, and Johnson poured in the next six points. Wahoo ended the third quarter 47-28.

The Warriors again had a solid fourth quarter.  

“I’m really pleased with my team’s efforts tonight,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker. “We put together 32 strong minutes and it was really good to see my players come alive. This is a great start for us.”

Warriors were led in scoring by Grandgenett, with a varsity game-high of 24 points, and Johnson with 13. Shannon and Barry both led with five rebounds each, and Grandgenett led in steals with seven.
