Wahoo fell to defeat against Bishop Neumann in sub-districts, 81-43.

One week earlier it was a double overtime battle between the two teams, but this time, it was Neumann’s game from the start to finish.

Turnovers cast the Warriors into a frustrated 0-12 start. Coach Linda Walker was forced to call two timeouts right away to settle the Warriors, and try to get her team to take care of the ball. Finally, a basket by Taylor Otte put Wahoo on the board followed by two more buckets from Katie Reeves. Warriors trailed 14-6 after nine possessions of play.

The Warrior defense was not playing strong, giving up way too many open opportunities. The Cavaliers took advantage of the situation, and hit open shots, and drove the lane to build a 23-11 lead at the end of first period.

Wahoo changed course and began playing with some intensity the second quarter. Bailey Brigham sank two free throws to get the action going, while Cheyenne Pearce battled the boards for an additional four points. A steal by Otte led to a score by Reeves. As the Warriors gained some momentum, the Cavs were able to keep a steady pace.

Midway through the quarter, the Warriors started making progress by attacking and using the free throw line to their advantage. Wahoo went on a 9-0 run with Tschida Johnson leading the way, hitting 4-4 from the line and connecting on a two-point basket. Pearce and Brigham accounted for four more points, and the Warriors pulled within seven; however, a key steal and layup by Bishop Neumann put a damper on the run, and Wahoo headed to the locker room down 31-40.

Wahoo needed to play smart defense, execute on the offensive end, and take care of the ball during the third quarter. Unfortunately, the Warriors fell right back into the trenches, beginning with four turnovers, and Bishop Neumann went on a 10-0 run to expand the lead.

Warriors tried to fight back with an Otte trey at the top of the key, but five Cavalier steals, and strong free throw shooting by the Cavs was making it impossible. Wahoo was outscored 23-7 during the third period.

The fate for the Warriors happened to be unveiled early in the third period, and the Warriors gave up the fight in the fourth quarter, taking the defeat to Bishop Neumann 43-81.

“It’s tough to end our season like this,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker. “We made huge improvements this season as a team; however, our inconsistency plagued us to be solid night after night. Tonight that inconsistency was exploited.”

Wahoo won in a last-second shot against Arlington Eagles 66-64 in the first round of subdistrict play.

The Warriors took a 9-4 lead early in the first quarter. The battle began with a bucket from Cheyenne Pearce and a free throw from Gabby Shannon. Soon Pearce finished strong on an and-one play, and Taylor Otte sank a right-side three.

Things started off pretty well for the Warriors, until Arlington’s three-point shooter went off for three threes, and other teammates also caught on fire. The Eagles turned it up a notch, and held the Warriors down 15-19 after eight minutes of play.

Wahoo played tentatively, and was having difficulty finding a rhythm. Katie Reeves came in and provided some fire by finishing on an offensive board and blocking an Eagle shot. Several Warriors sat the bench for many minutes with three fouls. Free throws by Pearce and Tschida Johnson pulled the score within four, but #10 Natalie Schmidt got loose again and nailed her fifth three of the game. Both Reeves and Johnson answered with twos to keep Arlington in check.  

The Warriors did finish stronger at the end the quarter, gaining some halftime momentum from Johnson’s put back and Pearce’s front-of-the-rim score. Wahoo now trailed 28-36 at halftime.

Wahoo came out attacking in the third quarter. In the first three possessions, the Warriors made a 7-0 statement. First, a Taylor Otte pass into Johnson for two gave the hope. Next, Pearce stole the ball, and Gabby Shannon finished the possession with a huge three from the left side baseline. Warriors were off to a good start, and even better, Bailey Brigham stole the ball on the next possession and drove the lane, and was able to finish two for two from the line.

Arlington answered the run with a two pointer and three, but Johnson’s steal and and-one finish and two more kept the Warriors rolling in the right direction. On the next possession Brigham drove the lane again and was able to draw the foul for two more free throws.  

Wahoo continued to accelerate on the offensive end. Otte hit Reeves for a nice bucket. The Eagles mustered three more points down the stretch, but a three by Brigham and four more points by Johnson gave the Warriors a 51-48 advantage heading into the final period.

The 4th quarter battle was on. A free throw by Johnson and a baseline trey by Otte kept it a tight ballgame, 55-52. Wahoo fouled on a shot and Arlington sank their free throw, closing in, 55-54. Pearce’s strong offensive board and and-one moved the score back up. Next, Otte found Johnson on the backside for another and-one. Warriors held a 61-54 advantage.

The lead dwindled quickly when #10 hit her sixth three of the game; however, Michaela Miller saved the day by pulling the offensive rebound and finishing on the score, giving the Warriors a 63-57cushion.

The Eagles darted back and went on a 7-2 run, tying the game 64 all. With only 22 seconds to go, Warriors got the ball in, and planned to run their power play. Not feeling it, Brigham decided to take the ball to the right side and found Johnson one on one. Johnson backed and maneuvered her way to the basket, and with grace put the final basket in.

Wahoo took the victory, 66-64, outscoring Arlington in the second half 38-28.

“We changed our attitudes the second half,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “We finally decided to play to win, and Tschida Johnson took charge tonight with the help of her teammates.”

The Wahoo Warriors lost a hard-fought battle in double overtime to Bishop Neumann, 76-72.

The battle was on Thursday night in the Neumann gymnasium. Fans packed the house and were in for a thrilling night.

A screen set by Cheyenne Pearce allowed Gabby Shannon to be wide open for the pass from Taylor Otte for the first two points of the game.  

The Warrior defense was playing solidly, and the offensive attack was persistent. Shannon and Tschida Johnson combined for 13 of the 17 points scored this quarter, with Otte and Shauna Tweedy picking up the rest.  

A beautiful steal and finished product by Otte boosted the Warriors’ fire to begin the second quarter. Pearce and Tweedy combined for 12 of the 18 points to set the pace. Wahoo went on a 10-6 run in the last three possessions of play to take an eight-point lead at half time, 35-27.

An and-one play by Shannon started the third quarter, pushing the Warriors to an 11-point lead. The Warriors then went scoreless for four possessions, but only allowed one of their turnovers to become points. Warriors regrouped, and a big steal by Otte led to a layup by Bailey Brigham.

A shift in momentum came when Wahoo allowed the Cavs to own the offensive boards three times, and then finish the possession on a three-point shot. Neumann went on a 10-5 run, tightening the score. To stop the momentum, Otte drained a baseline three to keep the Warriors leading 45-42 to end the third period.

The Warriors and Cavaliers continued to battle intensely in the final quarter, and free throws became huge.  

Otte began the scoring in the fourth quarter, but a Cav three slowed the pace. Johnson soon fired back and held strong on the offensive boards for a finish. Wahoo lead 49-45, but Hailey Thiele found the left side to the basket and squeezed in to bring the score 49-47.

Unfortunately, the Warriors gave up two offensive rebounds on the next possession, and Kelsey Chapek took advantage, and tied the game 49-49. Pearce fired backs for the Warriors and proceeded to the basket, and got fouled. Pearce hit one of two from the line to take back the lead; however, Chapek came alive again, giving Neumann its first lead of the game.

Wahoo didn’t sit back. Johnson fought back with a strong offensive rebound on a missed shot, and finished on an and-one, giving Wahoo a breath, 53-51.  

Wahoo bit on the decoy on the inbounds plays and left Chapek at the block wide open. Wahoo responded with an assist from Brigham to Shannon for two points to take back the lead, 55-53.

Hailey Thiele erased the two-point lead immediately. Huge clutch free throws by Pearce put the Warriors and Cavaliers into their first overtime, 57-57.

The next four minutes were another nail biter. Otte scored and Pearce hit two for two from the line to answer the Cavaliers’ four-point run. With seconds to go, Pearce and Shannon each hit a pair of key free throws to take the game into a second overtime.   

The second overtime began with Johnson sinking both her free throws after being fouled on the shot. Neumann answered by hitting a basket of their own. The Cavs sank two free throws to take the lead on the next possession, but Brigham’s savvy finish on a layup tied it up once again.  

A foul call on a long-range shot by Thiele allowed her to go to the line for three opportunities, which gave Neumann a one-point advantage, and then turned into a three-point lead. Warriors continued their quest. Shannon finished on a two, and Brigham sank one of two at the line. Wahoo trailed by two, with nine seconds to go and no times outs to use.  

Bishop Neumann missed both free throws and allowed Wahoo one final opportunity to take it into another overtime, but in the end the Warriors lost the battle.

“I’m really proud of the way we executed tonight,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “We fell short at the buzzer in the second over time, but we rose to the occasion and really played to win. This should be a huge momentum builder.”

Gretna takes down Warrior girls on the road

Wahoo took defeat by Gretna 61-38 Monday night.

Snow kept the teams from playing on their original date, but there was no snow on Monday, just fire coming out of the Dragons.

The Dragons began the night with a steal and three-point swish. Five turnovers gave no spark for the Warriors until finally, two free throws were sunk by Katie Reeves. Bailey Brigham followed up on a drive to the basket, and Taylor Otte added the last two points to end the quarter trailing 13-6.

Both teams were shooting pretty well early in the second. Tschida Johnson hit a left side three and finished on two more scores. Cheyenne Pearce and Reeves added eight more points; however, the Dragon scored as well, and made it difficult to get any closer than 12 points before half.

Warriors went into the locker room down 21-33.

Gretna’s offensive attack continued to be strong to begin the third quarter. The Dragons scored on 9 of 13 possessions while the Warriors hit on 4 of 14. Wahoo was outscored 17-7 to end the quarter 28-50.

“Gretna has some pure shooters and we didn’t react fast enough tonight,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “Too many crucial turnovers are jeopardizing us to get off to a good start every quarter, and we have to fix that.”

The Warriors were able to squeak a 10-point fourth quarter, but the damage was done early, and Wahoo is defeated 38-61.

Wahoo Warriors soared past the Arlington Eagles 74-58.

Bailey Brigham had herself in on the offensive boards early to get the action rolling for the Warriors Friday night. It was a high-scoring quarter for both teams, but the strong defensive rebounds and sharp outlets by the Warriors were the difference. Six Warriors had their hands in the 25-17 first quarter performance.  

Wahoo looked spectacular many times with their court awareness and unselfish play. A 10-2 run early in the second quarter, led by Cheyenne Pearce and Gabby Shannon put the Warriors up 35-19. It was too good to be true though. Wahoo began turning the ball over, allowing the Eagles to find their wings, and fight back with a 12-2 run of their own.  

Wahoo soon put a stop to the run with a nice steal by Katie Reeves that converted into an and-one finish by Taylor Otte. Pearce cleaned up the final moment with a strong move, producing a big basket for the Warriors.

Wahoo entered half time up 42-31.

The Warriors got off to a great start in the third quarter. Otte jumped out and stole the ball and played a quick passing game with Brigham down the floor, with Otte finishing on the lay up. On the next possession, Brigham stole the ball and allowed Tschida Johnson to finish on an and-one play. Warriors were building the lead once again, taking a 48-35 stand.

The Arlington Eagles soared back again with hot shooting from the arch. Arlington hit three three’s, taking advantage of the Warrior mistakes, finishing on two lay-ups. Once again the momentum started to shift, but Johnson’s nothing-but-net three gave flight back to the Warriors.

Warriors ended the third period up 59-48.

The Eagles came alive early in the fourth quarter and came within seven points, but Pearce canceled their stride by finishing strong at the rim. A decisive execution on the inbounds play allowed Shannon to feed Reeves for a quick two. Two steals by Brigham converted into made free throws by Pearce and Brigham herself, and a final steal by Pearce gave another Warrior score.

Warriors did give up six more points before taking the win 74-58 against the Arlington Eagles.  

“We were on a rollercoaster ride tonight with highs and lows,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “We looked spectacular and then not so much. I’m pleased with many things tonight, but we gave up too many points.”

Wahoo girls take runner-up in 2014 Capitol Conference Tournament

The Wahoo Warriors took Runner-Up to Platteview in the Championship Conference game, 56-30.

The Warriors held a slim 6-4 lead against the Platteview Trojans after the first eight minutes of action.  

A corner three by Gabby Shannon to start the second quarter kept the Warriors in control 9-6. And then, all craziness broke loose. Some missed shots and long rebounds enabled Platteview to grab the rebound and transition for easy layups, building momentum.  

The pivotal point of the quarter came when Wahoo turned the ball over three times in a row, enabling their opponents to gain total control of the game by going on a four-possession, nine-point run.  

Wahoo fell to a 12-21 devastating half.  

“Platteview Trojans stole the ball five times this quarter and gained nine points off those steals,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “Those steals and conversions killed our momentum and fueled the Trojans.”

The Wahoo Warriors have been in this situation before and wanted to have a strong third quarter to get back into the game; however, three turnovers set the tone once again, and the Trojans marched on at a steady pace, scoring on eight of 14 possessions.  

Warriors trailed 24-39 after 24 minutes of play.

The fourth quarter was no better. The Warriors were unable to put the ball in the basket, and were outscored 17-6 in the final period, losing 56-30.

“I felt we were a step slow tonight,” Walker commented. “Things just didn’t go very well for us, and it’s a disappointing loss after a great game against Syracuse. You can’t give up 19 points on turnovers that your opponents cash in with transition buckets. How we respond to this loss will be key.”

Wahoo girls leave their mark with big win @ Syracuse in NCC semifinal

The Wahoo Warriors don’t have to rally from behind this time against the Syracuse Rockets. Warriors won big, 64-37.

It took a little to jumpstart the Warriors, but once they began scoring, they didn’t look back.

An assist by Gabby Shannon to Tschida Johnson started the night. Soon to follow was an assist by Katie Reeves to Cheyenne Pearce for another. Reeves found the aggressiveness to bull her way to the basket for a two and getting herself to the foul line, sinking 4-6 free throws. Johnson finished on another basket to give the Warriors a slim 12-11 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to take over the game. Shannon’s offensive rebound put-back, two free throws and another basket expanded the lead.  

Syracuse answered quietly with a three, but Shauna Tweedy’s offensive rebound and score, and another Shannon offensive rebound and score stunted the Rocket fuse; however, it was Johnson’s thriller top-of-the-key three that gave Wahoo a 13-4 advantage in the first seven possessions.  

More Warriors wanted in on the action. Reeves sank one of two free throws and Bailey Brigham sank a right-side three. The Rockets fought back with a two-point basket and three; however, Johnson cancelled their fire with a deuce and top-of-the-key three of her own. Shannon finished the quarter on an offensive rebound put-back, ending the half up 36-22.

“We talked at halftime about not letting the Rockets make any kind of run the second half,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker. “We came out third quarter and really played well on both ends of the floor.”

Third quarter began with an assist by Brigham to Shannon. Pearce and Tweedy added four more points. Wahoo went on a three-possession turnover spree, but Michaela Miller broke the spell by nailing the 20-footer from the right side wing. Pearce then sparked the Warriors by finishing on two and-one plays and two more free throws. Wahoo lead 55-30 at the end of third quarter.

The Warriors continue to play solid in the fourth quarter, and took the win over the Rockets 64-37.  

“We shot the ball well tonight, and were strong on the boards,” said Walker. “It was good to see we were able to play strong while missing Taylor Otte, who hurt her wrist in the first round of conference play.”

Big 2nd half propels Wahoo girls over Ashland in NCC Tourney

Wahoo takes Ashland a second time 48-27.

First round of Capitol Conference Tourney play began Monday night in Wahoo with seed #3 Wahoo vs #6 Ashland-Greenwood.

The Warriors caused the Bluejays some trouble on defense, forcing the opponents to turn the ball over nine times in the first quarter; however, Wahoo’s offensive production did not produce big scores.

A defensive rebound by Bailey Brigham and an assist to Gabby Shannon put the first points on the board. Minutes later Taylor Otte converted on her steal, tying the game up 4-4 half way through the quarter. Ashland answered by connecting at the arch and taking a slim 7-4 advantage.  

The Warriors tried to change the tone of the game with another score by Shannon. A steal and an assist by Tschida Johnson to Brigham put the Warriors ahead 8-7.

Wahoo engaged in a great 12-1 run, building a 20-8 lead in the second quarter. Otte scored seven of her 16 points this quarter, but the Warriors could not remain solid for the finals minutes of half. Several turnovers by the Warriors helped fuel a 10-2 Bluejay run.

Wahoo did manage to keep the lead, entering half time up 21-18.

Third quarter Wahoo came out with four scores in four possessions of play, going on an 8-0 run. An assist by Brigham to Johnson began the second half work followed by a steal and score by Otte. The Warriors press was doing the job as Cheyenne Pearce armed the steal and finished on a two. Things were starting to click as Johnson’s strong offensive rebound turned into two more points.  

Wahoo started to break away, but four turnovers in a row put the breaks on, and Ashland scored on two plays. Wahoo held the lead 31-24.

Warriors’ fourth quarter was the most impressive of the night. The defense sparked five steals for ten points, and Wahoo outscored Ashland 17-3 this final period.

“We played a sluggish first half, and let Ashland overcome a 12-1 run,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “I was happy with our domination in the second half, outscoring Ashland 27-9.”

Wahoo Warriors defeated Ashland Bluejays 38-27, and will take on the Rockets Thursday night at Syracuse in the semi-round of conference play.

Wahoo Warriors came up short against Norfolk Catholic Knights, 62-57.

Trouble scoring and defensive break downs struck the Warriors in the first quarter. The Knights picked up six points off the offensive boards and connected on three threes while scores from Bailey Brigham, Tschida Johnson, Gabby Shannon and Taylor Otte combined for only nine, leaving the Warriors trailing 9-16.

The Warriors regrouped and began to attack. A corner three by Shannon began the pursuit, followed by a score by Cheyenne Pearce. The Warriors were back in the game when Otte cashed in on a wing three pointer. The Knights answered Wahoo’s run by nailing a three of their own. Soon to follow Otte found herself wide open for another three, bringing the Warriors within one, 20-21.

Too many fouls by the Warriors and connected free throws by the Knights kept Wahoo from taking the lead. Too quick of a shot by the Warriors allowed the Knights to transition quickly before half, hitting a three and giving NC a 31-27 advantage.

Wahoo did not come out third quarter the way they wanted. Two turnovers and missed shots gave Wahoo an empty start until Pearce was fouled on the shot and put in her two free throws. The Knights were off to a 9-2 advantage until Shauna Tweedy scored on a transition bucket. A few more free throws and an and-one by Pearce ended the quarter 43-36 in favor of Norfolk Catholic.

The Warriors found their attack once again, and came alive on the offensive end during fourth quarter. Katie Reeves finished on an offensive board, and Brigham led the attack to the basket. The Warriors were closing in, and putting on greats amounts of defensive pressure in the full court set.

Johnson’s two three-pointers fueled the Warrior intensity, and gave them a chance to make the come back; however, some missed opportunities, whistles and the Knights’ free throws would not let them get closer than two points.  

Wahoo takes their sixth loss of the season to Norfolk Catholic, 62-57.

“Fourth quarter was a free throw fest by the Knights. We played extremely tough down the stretch, and fought to win the battle,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “There’s a lot to learn from a game like this.”

The Wahoo Warriors produced a dominating third quarter to guarantee the 57-42 victory over Raymond Central Mustangs Tuesday night.

The Warriors’ slow start had them trailing 13-5 after a pair of threes were sunk by the Mustangs. Wahoo put the 1-3-1 defense back in their pockets, and pulled out the full court man pressure, which reared the Warriors to fight back.

Raymond Central held a 17-10 advantage after eight minutes of play.

Midway through the second quarter Wahoo tied the game up when Bailey Brigham assisted Katie Reeves inside on two back-to-back scores. Too many fouls sidelined a few Warriors and gave the Mustangs free shots, hitting six for six from the line, but the combination on the floor was just as strong.

Shauna Tweedy came alive through the rest of the quarter scoring five of her seven points. A sky block and steal by Reeves fueled the Warriors into half time, 23-23.

The Warriors came out of the gates third quarter and dominated. The first play of the game was executed well, with Gabby Shannon putting in her first score of the game. Taylor Otte then stole the ball and assisted Bailey Brigham for a lay-up. Warriors now led 27-23.  

Another quick rebound by Otte led to her first score of the game, and finished free throws by Shannon and Tschida Johnson demanded a time-out by Raymond Central. Wahoo now held a 33-25 advantage.  

Otte didn’t hold back and scored five more points before the Mustangs turned up their shoes. Raymond Central stole the ball two times and scored, ending the third quarter 40-33 in Wahoo’s favor.

Fourth quarter began with a steal by Cheyenne Pearce, and finished free throws by Brigham; however, it was Otte’s four-point play that cast away the Mustang’s spirit. Johnson tallied six of her twelve points this quarter and Warriors took the win over Raymond Central 57-42.

“We came out focused third quarter, and really took care of business,” said Head Coach Linda Walker. “I was pleased to see us have an answer for every time RC tried to make a run.”

The Wahoo Warriors ended the week with a win over the D.C. West Falcons 58-17.

Wahoo executed the backdoor ‘power play’ to begin the early Saturday afternoon action. Bailey Brigham gave the perfect pass to Tschida Johnson for the backdoor score, pleasing the fans. Five Warriors put up good numbers this quarter, giving the Warriors a comfortable 18-7 lead.

The Warrior defense continued to cause havoc for the Falcons. D.C. West turned the ball over in the first six of eight possessions in the second quarter. Wahoo scored on every other possession and ended at half time up 30-10.    

Strong defense and offensive scores enabled the Warriors to play confidently with many teammates. A steal and assist midway in the third quarter by Michaela Miller allowed Kelsey Tomjack to take nothing but net and rock the crowd.

Wahoo forced 13 turnovers this quarter, and went on a huge run, outscoring the Falcons 20-3 and engaging in a running clock for the rest of the game.

Warriors entered the final grace period up 50-13.

Wahoo dominated every quarter and began the fourth period playing a 2-3 defense. The Falcons did not adjust to the Warriors’ change in defense, and threw the ball right into the hands of the Warriors. Otte and Brigham transitioned and fed each other the ball, building a larger lead.  

“All 14 players saw floor time tonight,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker. “We haven’t had a game lately like this where we could play with ease all night long.”

Wahoo beat D.C. West 58-17.

Wahoo takes a tough three-point loss to Platteview 46-43.

There was a lot of energy generated in the gym Friday night when the 8-4 Wahoo Warriors took on 9-1 Platteview Trojans.  

Warriors took an early 6-1 lead with a trey from Tschida Johnson and three free throws from Cheyenne Pearce. A few turnovers slowed the Warriors, and allowed Platteview to even the game at 6.

A steal by Gabby Shannon and an assist by Taylor Otte to Shauna Tweedy put the Warriors back on top. Johnson then finished on two free throws, but Platteview was able to keep it close, ending the quarter 10-9 in Wahoo’s favor.

Wahoo and Platteview played about even the second quarter. Shannon connected on two baskets and the Warriors hit five of six free throws. Platteview connected on three baskets and hit five of six free throws. Platteview now led 20-19 entering half time.

An offensive rebound and score by Pearce gave back the lead to the Wahoo early in the third quarter. Otte sank a 20-footer to give Wahoo a four-point lead; however, the Trojans answered the run back with a two-point shot.

Wahoo responded with four more points from Katie Reeves, and now held the largest lead of the second half, 28-22. Soon Platteview reacted with a ten-point run. Johnson added two more points to end the quarter with Platteview leading 32-30.

“Kenzie Kulm’s two three’s in a row hurt third quarter, but not nearly as bad as #11’s corner trey and an and-one play early to start the fourth,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.  

The Warriors continued to battle with assists and scores from Shannon, Pearce and Brigham. A steal and score from Otte brought the Warriors back into contention, trailing 39-42.  

Wahoo battled the remaining time on the clock. The possibility to pull the win was still insight. Brigham was fouled on the next possession and finished on both free throws, squeezing the score to 41-43. With 19 seconds to go, Wahoo fouled the Trojans, and sadly missed their opportunity to own the offensive board on the missed free throw.  

The Warriors immediately fouled, but that turned into two more points for the opponents. Wahoo now trailed 45-41. Again, Warriors came down and attacked. Otte took to the line and sank two more free throws, bringing the game within reach.  

Wahoo was forced to foul once more, and the Trojans made one of two. The Warriors owned that missed free throw, moved down the floor with determination and were able to get a good shot off.  

Wahoo lost a heartbreaker to Platteview 46-43.

“Urgency and strategy to win this game were present with seconds to go,” said Walker. “We gave ourselves the opportunity to tie the game up, but it just didn’t fall. Our shooting tonight was a struggle at times, but we played to win, and I’m proud of my girls.”

Warriors win on the road to Omaha Mercy 46-33!

After a great weekend of basketball, Wahoo took to the road again, traveling to Omaha Mercy Tuesday night.

Wahoo got off to a good start against the Monarchs. Bailey Brigham’s eight points contributed to a 15-4 lead early in the game.  

Taylor Otte aced the trey on the first possession to start the second quarter. Wahoo now had an 18-4 lead, but soon the Warriors cocooned, and the Monarchs expanded their wings going on a 10-0 run. A big corner three by Michaela Miller, and a finished two-pointer by Katie Reeves awoke the Warriors to end the quarter up 23-14.

Once more the Warriors were plagued with very little scoring in the third, and were outscored 10-8. Reeves picked up the slack this quarter by connecting on five points, along with Shauna Tweedy and Brigham on two of four free throws, keeping Wahoo ahead of the game 31-24.

Finally, fourth quarter resembled the start. The Warriors found their groove. Leading the way was Cheyenne Pearce, who pulled the offensive rebound and finished on the shot. Gabby Shannon kept moving the Warriors along by finishing on the next five points. Pearce, Otte, Tschida Johnson and Brigham cleaned up the rest of the 15 points for this quarter.

Wahoo Warriors soared to a 46-33 victory.

“It’s always a challenge to play at Omaha Mercy. Their style can make it difficult at times to find consistent rhythm,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

The tank was still full for the Wahoo Warriors Saturday afternoon against Class B Crete Cardinals after a whale of a come back less than 24 hours earlier.

Wahoo launched a great start with strong defensive boards and quick transition points in the first six possessions of play. Finished products by Tschida Johnson, two by Taylor Otte, Gabby Shannon and a free throw by Cheyenne Pearce gave Warriors a 9-0 sweep.

The Cardinals soon asked for a timeout to stop the invasive attack and in time finished on an and-one play. A steal by Katie Reeves gave way to a score by Shauna Tweedy, and Otte and Shannon finished up the quarter with more scores, ending the quarter 14-5.

Wahoo played with confidence and poise in the second quarter. Their strong defense and solid shooting allowed the Warriors to play with good rhythm and rotation. Warriors scored on six of their 12 possessions. Pacing the scores were Johnson, Pearce, Shauna Tweedy, Shannon and Bailey Brigham, making it tough for the opponents to key on one player.

Wahoo ended the half up 26-13.

It took awhile to kick start the Warriors in the second half, but soon Otte nailed her first three of the game from the right wing and Wahoo rolled once again. Michaela Miller gave back-to-back assists to Shannon and Pearce, giving Wahoo a 38-29 lead.

The Crete Cardinals continued to battle, finding some answers by outscoring the Warriors 18-14; however, Wahoo continued to hold the lead, 40-31.

Wahoo took another 8-3 advantage over the Cardinals in the first seven possessions of the final quarter. A steal by Brigham, an assist to Tweedy, and another assist to Reeves stunned the Cardinals once again. Kaylynn Knuth stepped to the foul line as she was fouled on the shot, and hit one of two, giving Wahoo a 19-point lead.  

Crete never gave up and cashed in on some long range three's, and two and two free-throws late in the game to pull the score into a more respectable ending.  

Wahoo defeated Crete 54-44 and ends the weekend with two nice wins.

"We're playing together and with passion. These road wins were huge for us!" commented Head Coach Linda Walker.   

The Wahoo Warriors will go on the road this coming Tuesday to take on Omaha Mercy. Warriors will face Platteview Trojans on Friday at home, and finish the week on the road with D.C. West on Saturday.

The Warriors faced extreme diversity in the first eight minutes of play when they found themselves down 22-4.  

The Rockets sank their first two threes and set the pace early in the game. Wahoo struggled to see their open teammates, and basically handed the ball to green for the score. Rockets led 22-6 at the end first period.

A determined, unified Warrior team took the floor second quarter. Warriors found the 1-3-1 to be "It!"

Bailey Brigham stepped up and took charge, hitting a three and banking in another one. Continuous defensive stops by the Warriors fueled the determination and ability to get back into the race, outscoring the Rockets 13-5 and closing the gap 19-27.

Wahoo needed a big third quarter to gain control of the game, and that's what happened. Warriors' 1-3-1 caused the Rockets to get less on offense and turn the ball over.  

Tschida Johnson's score on an offensive board began the crusade and a savvy Brigham steal and lay-up set the tone for what would be an incredible come back.  

Playing strong inside was Cheyenne Pearce and Katie Reeves combining for a total of 8 more points; however, a three by Bailey Brigham put the Warriors in good shape for the final quarter trailing only by 2, 34-36.

It was all Wahoo in the first five possessions of the fourth. Pearce's paint shot tied the game, and a coast-to-coast lay-up by Gabby Shannon gave Wahoo its first lead of the game, 38-37.  

A shot foul enabled Syracuse to hit one of two free throws, keeping them alive; however, Shannon stroked the three in the left corner giving Wahoo a 41-38 lead.

Syracuse tried to attack again, but Reeves intercepted the reverse pass and went coast to coast on a lay-up. The Rockets tried to regain their composure, but soon Brigham found Johnson on the backside for another lay-up, giving Wahoo its largest lead of 45-38.

The Rockets continued to try to reclaim the lead, but Wahoo sank the pressure free throws and history was made.

"It wasn't fun being down 22-4 by the Conference foe Syracuse Rockets, but it sure was an exciting finish! I've never had a team come back after being down 18 points" €commented Head Coach Linda Walker.

Wahoo lost on the road to Lincoln Lutheran, 58-45.

Wahoo's first twelve points came strictly from the three-point line, which was a bit unusual for the Warriors. Tschida Johnson from the right wing and Taylor Otte's right base three gave Wahoo a 6-5 lead, but not for long. Lutheran scored on the last three possessions of the quarter, but it was Gabby Shannon who sank a top-of-the-key three to keep the spread respectable.

The fourth three was sunk by Otte to start the second quarter, and tie the game up 12-12. A steal by Shannon and an assist by Johnson to Cheyenne Pearce gave Wahoo a two-point advantage. Soon to follow, Otte assisted Shauna Tweedy for another basket and Wahoo took a 16-12 lead.

Lincoln Lutheran didn't sit back. They answered back with a 10-2 run. Wahoo now trailed 22-18. Wahoo responded with only four more points this quarter, and Lutheran put up another seven points.

Lincoln Lutheran held the lead at half-time 29-22.

Third quarter was not good for Wahoo. The Warrior defense was not able to stop all the scorers. Lutheran's #25 took the Warriors by surprise and drilled two three's and others were on fire. The depleted Warriors played with very little intensity this quarter, and took a devastating 19-6 whooping.

Wahoo Warriors now trailed 28-43.

Wahoo finally found some energy and committed with the full court man pressure, which started to change the momentum of the game. The increased defensive pressure also allowed Wahoo to go on a 16-8 run, closing the gap; however, Warriors were forced to foul, and Lincoln Lutheran hit 7-8 free throws down the stretch to take the victory 58-45.

"We've been practicing and playing with very little passion and intensity lately and tonight's game was the result," said Head Coach Linda Walker. "We need leadership to emerge and a realization that you can't have something for nothing!"

The Bluejays started the game with a 5-0 run, but the Warriors broke that run with a right-side corner trey by Taylor Otte.

Wahoo had severe issues breaking Central Catholic's press, and turnovers turned into opponent scores.

Katie Reeves came off the bench early in the quarter, and provided a spark for the Warriors, connecting on two two-pointers, pulling the game within four. Gabby Shannon got her second foul and took to the bench while Shauna Tweedy stepped up with a steal and a finished product.

Wahoo ended the first quarter down 11-17.

The Warriors began the second quarter by closing the gap with scores from Cheyenne Pearce and Tschida Johnson, but the fire soon blew out with GACC free throws and scores off of steals. It was Pearce who kept the Warriors alive while scoring 8 of her 19 points this quarter.

Wahoo trailed 23-31 after 16 minutes of play.

Once again Wahoo struggled to get off to a good start, and Guardian Angels took advantage, outscoring the Warriors 13-19 this quarter. Pearce continued to play strong for the Warriors, finishing on four more baskets, and Bailey Brigham scored on an and-one play. Shauna Tweedy finished up on the two free throws, ending the quarter 36-50.  

With much determination the Warriors took a strong stand in the fourth quarter by scoring on their first two possessions, but a key time out by GACC erupted an 8-0 run, deflating the hope that Wahoo would get back into the game.

Wahoo never gave up and continued to battle until the end; however, all the mishaps were too much to overcome, and GACC took the victory 63-50.

"GACC press gave us fits tonight," said Head Coach Linda Walker. "If we execute our game plan, we lessen our trouble. We need to stay calm and make better decisions."

Wahoo fell to defeat against Bishop Neumann in the finals of the Holiday Tournament 61-43.

It was a battle first half, but not super pretty. The Warriors were plagued with ten turnovers in the first 14 possessions and still only trailed 5-9 after the first eight minutes of play.

Wahoo soon tied the game up 13-13 mid-way through the second quarter, out-scoring the Cavaliers 8-2 early on. The scoring went back and forth. Taylor Otte hit a left side trey, giving the Warriors their first lead 17-16. The Cavaliers soon took advantage of the Warrior errors late in the quarter, and entered half time with great momentum, up 24-20.

Bishop Neumann came out third quarter and dominated the Warriors by outscoring in 8 of 10 possessions and going on a 20-5 run.    

Wahoo rallied late in the third and early fourth quarter to try and avenge the devastating third quarter, but it was too much of a deficit, and the Warriors met their fate and were defeated 43-61.

"We broke down physically and mentally," said Head Coach Linda Walker. "We didn't communicate defensively and were a step slow. If we make our free throws, that would have kept us in the game. Give credit to Neumann: they had six players step up and hit shots in their third quarter run."€

Warriors captured a great first round win at the Holiday Tournament against Class B Elkhorn South, 48-41.

The Friday afternoon challenge began when Gabby Shannon gave back-to-back assists to Tschida Johnson at the elbows on two early inbound plays.

Soon to follow, a strong and-one play by Cheyenne Pearce, and a lay-up by Taylor Otte gave the Warriors an 8-3 charge.  

The Storm responded to the charge by strong dribble drives, and connected on several shooting fouls, ending the first quarter up 11-9.

Warriors took the lead back when Shannon stole the ball and finished on the layup. On the next possession Pearce cleaned up on a block shot.  

The Storm once again kept themselves alive by finishing on the foul line, but it was Otte and Johnson threes that gave the Warriors a strong second quarter finish.  

"Those three's were big momentum boosters for us," commented Head Coach Linda Walker.    

Wahoo outscored Elkhorn South 14-10 this quarter, entering half time up 23-21.

The third quarter was jump-started by Gabby Shannon's offensive board work and score. The Warriors then went on an 8-2 run, and took a comfortable 10-point lead. Two steals by Bailey Brigham allowed Johnson and Otte to put up scores, but once again the Storm found comfort at the line and closed the gap.

The Warriors led after 24 minutes, 33-29.

Both teams started the fourth quarter with a turnover and a steal, and both teams scored in their fourth and fifth possessions. The Storm began closing in on the Warriors, 37-34, but that was as close as they would get.

Pearce broke the back-and-forth action by connecting on an offensive rebound. A steal plus score by Brigham nudged the Warriors to a six-point advantage. Wahoo soon found the foul line to be their answer down the stretch, and captured the victory 48-41.

Wahoo Warriors claimed the victory over Fort Calhoun Friday night 68-36.  

Wahoo took a 13-2 lead over the Pioneers in the first nine possessions of play Friday night. The Warriors' defense forced the opponents to turn the ball over nine times, giving very few scoring opportunities to their foe. Five Warriors paced Wahoo with a 15-7 advantage after eight minutes of play.

Second quarter scoring began with a Ft. Calhoun right side three-pointer; however, with no hesitation, Taylor Otte swished her own right side trey, followed by a two-point bucket by Gabby Shannon.

Pioneers hit two more threes this quarter, but a four-possession scoring frenzy by Johnson, Otte, Tweedy and Brigham allowed the Warriors to enter halftime up 28-18.

Warriors came out third quarter and dominated. Wahoo scored on 11 of 19 possessions, and connected on five of six free throws. Strong offensive boards by Shannon, Brigham, Reeves and Pearce led to nine of the 21 points, giving Wahoo a 49-29 lead.

A fast-paced fourth quarter helped Wahoo expand their lead. Strong defensive rebounds, quick outlets and transition buckets by Katie Reeves ended the quarter in good standings. Warriors hit nine of 11 free throws this quarter and all players continued to play strong until the final buzzer.

"It felt good to get back on the winning road," said Head Coach Linda Walker. "We made some adjustments through this week of practice, and the girls responded well."

Wahoo claimed their fourth victory of the season, and will take on Elkhorn South in the first round of the Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 at 2:00 p.m.

The first quarter began with a Wayne 6-2 advantage as they connected on two threes. Bailey Brigham's trey, steal, and assist to Tschida Johnson brought the Warriors back into the game trailing by one.

Michaela Miller came off the bench and sparked the Warriors with her tenacity. The Warriors forced six turnovers and avenged the lead. Cheyenne Pearce scored on an offensive rebound, and Miller hit a baseline shot before the end of the quarter leading 12-10.

Both teams started the 2nd quarter with turnovers. An assist by Taylor Otte to Johnson expanded the Warrior lead. Wayne quickly turned that around by scoring on their next two possessions, leaving Wahoo trailing once again.

Wahoo cancelled Wayne with a six-point stretch of their own. Leading the way was Gabby Shannon with two baskets, and finished free throws by Pearce.  

Wayne scored the next basket on an offensive put back and both teams went one for two down the stretch on the line.

Warriors lead at half time 21-18.

Wayne Blue Devils exploded the second half scoring on seven of their first ten possessions. Shauna Tweedy was the lone Warrior to be able to connect on six points this quarter.  

Wahoo struggled offensively by turning the ball over seven times in the 3rd period, falling behind 27-37 to enter the 4th quarter.

Warriors continued their cold streak and misfortunes throughout the fourth quarter, and Wayne rallied to a victory, outscoring the Warriors 28-45.

"Basically, we didn't score and they got hot for too many possessions in a row that devastated us," said Head Coach Linda Walker. "Give Wayne credit, they played a great second half. I would like to have this game back."

Taylor Otte aced a baseline three from the right side corner to begin the action Tuesday night against the Bluejays. Warriors were off to a great start!  

Next, Bailey Brigham finished on a driving layup, and an assist by Gabby Shannon to Tschida Johnson gave way to a 9-4 advantage early in the game. A steal and assist by Otte led Brigham to an and-one finish, extending the lead to 12-4. A key steal by Katie Reeves and score by Shannon ended the quarter 14-5.

Second quarter Wahoo had a hard time finishing their attempts. Twelve attempts and six turnovers plagued Wahoo for the next 13 possessions. Finally, a block by Shauna Tweedy ignited a spark in the Warriors.

Brigham's free throws, followed by Otte's big steal and score, broke through the ugliness. Cheyenne Pearce finished on an offensive rebound to put the Warriors ahead at half time 20-13, finished with a quick score.  

"We lost our intensity second quarter, and we fell apart as a team to find our rhythm," said Head Coach Linda Walker.   

The half time talk proved to be a good one. Warriors came out with some extra wings and began scoring once again. Johnson's offensive rebound and score, followed by Brigham's two-pointer, set the tone.  

The Warriors' defensive pressure netted the Bluejays, forcing them to turn the ball over eight times, and Wahoo turned their steals into points. Wahoo led at the end of third quarter 35-21.
 
The fourth quarter began well with a huge transition play, steal by Brigham, assist by Otte and finish work by Johnson. The transition game stayed strong as Shannon cleaned up on buckets on the next three possessions.

The Warriors hit six of eight free throws down the stretch as Ashland made one last attempt to pull within ten, but the Warriors prevailed and took the win, 49-38.

The momentum of Thursday's win carried the Wahoo Warriors to a 43-35 victory over the Seward Bluejays Saturday afternoon.

"It's been since the 2004-05 season since the Warriors have been victorious over the Bluejays," said Head Coach Linda Walker. "One of the season's goals was to get this win. We can now check that one off."

It was a pretty hairy start with many quick fouls. Tschida Johnson found herself in foul trouble quite early in the game and sat for the majority of the first quarter; however, the Warriors fought through the madness.  

Bailey Brigham put the Warriors on the board by sinking her free throws. Soon after, Gabby Shannon cashed in on the right-side trey, and Cheyenne Pearce delivered 1 of 2 at the line.  

Wahoo held a slim 6-3 lead midway through the first quarter, but Taylor Otte added four points, and Shannon's made free throws ended the quarter in Wahoo's favor 12-8.

Wahoo struggled a bit in the 2nd quarter with four early turnovers, and Seward's guard Duer cashing in on three threes. Pearce's bucket and one helped keep the Warriors alive. Wahoo turned to the 1-3-1 and was able to slow down Seward's shooting momentum. An offensive rebound at the buzzer by Katie Reeves ended the quarter 20-21 in Seward's favor.

Third quarter started out slow. A needed time-out early in the third helped fuel the Warriors.   

"I told the girls to get after it, and stop playing so hesitant," said Walker. "We can't control how the game is called, but we can bring the energy."

The Warriors took control with a full court man defense. Seward turned the ball over eight times in 12 possessions and held to two points. Reeves' athletic rebounds and quick outlets helped activate the Warrior transition game, enabling Otte, Shannon and Johnson to get to the rim. Wahoo now led 29-23.

Wahoo continued to roll in the fourth quarter until the fould flew in. The Warriors expanded the lead to 37-26 through the first 11 possessions; however, Seward made some last-minute attacks and things started to go south in the last two minutes. The Bluejays hit nine of ten free throws in the last minutes of the game, but it wasn't enough. Warriors take the win and can check it off the list.  

Wahoo Warriors begin their season 2-0 to two Class B teams, and will take on pre-season ranked Ashland and Wayne this coming week.

Scoring was led by Shannon (11) and Otte (8). Rebounds leaders were Reeves (7) and Johnson (6).

Wahoo Warriors started their 2013-14 season with a victory over the Bennington Badgers, 62-24.

Bennington took an early 8-5 lead in the first four minutes of action, but Wahoo dominated the rest. Two treys from Tschida Johnson and three buckets from Bailey Brigham gave the Warriors a 12-8 lead after eight minutes of play.

The Warriors' defense soon overcame the Badgers early in the second quarter. Taylor Otte's steal, followed by her productive seven points, triggered an outbreak of Warrior scoring. Gabby Shannon, Bailey Brigham and Katie Reeves added 13 more points on the board. Wahoo's strong boards and quick outlets inspired a 32-16 half time performance.

Wahoo really picked up their intensity in the 3rd quarter. The Badgers were frozen in their tracks and could not score. The Warriors expanded a 19-1 run with every player making huge contributions.

"Every girl made a difference for us tonight, and gained valuable experience," said Head Coach Linda Walker. "We had great chemistry and teamwork tonight, and the girls played with super energy."
 
The Warriors will take this momentum into Saturday afternoon's game against the Seward Bluejays, with JV's at 1:30 p.m. and Varsity play at 3:00 p.m.

Wahoo scoring was led by Johnson and Otte with 13 each, Brigham with 11 and Shannon with nine. Team rebounding was led by Reeves with 13. Shauna Tweedy led the team with four steals and Brigham and Shannon assisted with five each.
