Wahoo Takes Down Concordia in District Final; Mar. 3-5 State Tournament Information Posted

The Wahoo Warriors faced off with new opponent Concordia Mustangs last Friday night in the District Final at Elkhorn South. Warriors started the game with a lot of energy and took a 6-point lead in the first quarter with hot outside shooting; however, the lead slimmed after Warriors lost the battle on the offensive boards ending first quarter 14-14. Warriors found themselves down by 3 at half time, a familiar story in the last big game. The Warriors remained calm and adjusted at half time. Wahoo came out with a bang by executing and draining three 3’s to start the half, given them a 5-point lead. It was time to put the Mustangs away, but Concordia’s solid defense made things somewhat difficult. Warriors held a 7-point lead going into the 4th quarter. As time ticked Warriors were sent to the foul line where they sank 9 of 10 free throws. Warriors shot 92 percent from the foul line  and 50 percent from the arch. Warriors are crowned District Champions and advance to the State Tournament 25-1.

It was a game of disbelief at first when both teams were playing out of character, but both settled down and gave the fans their moneys worth. Neumann Cavaliers led by 2 at half. Luckily for the Warriors it was 13-11 and no one was red hot. Warriors gained some momentum third quarter, but every time the tide swung in Wahoo’s favor, the Cavs answered back to end the third quarter 32-27. A huge 4-point play gave the Warriors believing power. With great effort and focus Warriors finally took a one-point lead with less than 3 minutes to go. Warriors led for the first time 40-39. This lead faded and the Warriors were down by 3 with 5 seconds remaining. It was a believing moment when the Warriors executed their T-Break down the side, passed the ball into the hands of Mattie and launched a perfect 26 foot shot to take the game into O.T. The Wahoo fans went crazy! With perfect free throws, and a 2-point shot, Warriors take the 3rd OT victory of the season. Wahoo wins 1st, 2nd and 3rd round to hometown rival.

Wahoo Warriors took the floor and knew exactly what kind of a game it was going to be since both teams have met now for the third time in exactly one month. Warriors set the tone of the game early with their snarling defense and polished offensive attack and never played pressured. All the Warriors had the opportunity to be major contributors while keeping solid play in tack. Wahoo advances to Sub-district Finals.

If you didn’t arrive early, you didn’t get to pick your choice of seat. The gym was packed, and the fans were in for an awesome evening of intense basketball between the Wahoo Warriors and Bishop Neumann Cavaliers. Warriors led 1st quarter by a slim margin of 14-12 while sinking three 3’s and a pair of 2’s and a free throw. Solid defense on both sides led to a low-scoring 2nd quarter, but Warriors nailed the big shot right before half taking a 3-point lead.  

The second half was a battle. The Warriors really stepped up in the second half when point guard Sadie Murren was sidelined. Warriors kept cool down the stretch when falling behind while paying close attention to details. Huge baskets and free throws allowed the Warriors to find the next level in the final minutes. The girls did a fantastic job down the stretch paying attention to details, taking care of the ball, and finishing at the free throw line. Sweet victory to end regular season!

After such a fantastic game the night before, the Warriors were ready for another challenge without starting pt. guard Sadie Murren. Warriors came out with huge energy and attack. Warriors caused a lot of havoc on defense and outscored the Eagles 46-14 in the first half. Warriors stayed in the half court defense the second half while still keeping the Warrior intensity. Warriors put a huge 30-point third quarter together. Wahoo played very relaxed, passed the ball well to the open shooters who connected. All the Warriors entered the game and gave tremendous effort. Warriors gain All-Season Capitol Conference Champs by the win.

These two Conference teams met the 3rd game of the season with Wahoo winning by 9; however, a key player for Ashland was not in the line up that night, which could make a difference. It did and it didn’t. Wahoo hit a three at the buzzer to end the first quarter 16-15, but entered the locker room trailing by 3. Warriors were struggling to function on all cylinders and Ashland was hitting the big shots. Wahoo’s adjustment at half time to go to a zone and slow the game up dealt Ashland fits, but ignited the Warriors with tremendous hot shooting and confidence all over the court. Warriors took control of the game, tuckered the Bluejays, and rallied to a 20-point victory. Warriors take the Capitol Conference Championship 2 years in a row.

The Rockets jumped to a 15-11 lead after one quarter of play, which didn’t sit too well with the Wahoo Warriors. It didn’t take long for the Warriors to gain back the control. Warriors applied more pressure on the defensive end, which left the Rockets scrambling to take care of the ball and score. Warriors outscored the Rockets 28-8 in the second quarter. The second half was an even match with the Warriors, who barely outscored the Rockets each quarter. The Warriors’ inconsistent play in the second half gave Syracuse a little momentum and brought the starters back in with few minutes to go in the game. Wahoo seals the win and moves onto to the Championship against Ashland-Greenwood.

Warriors dominated DC West in the 1st Round of the Capitol Conference Tournament. Wahoo set the tone early, outscoring the Falcons 27-0 in the first quarter. Wahoo played 4 solid quarters giving quality minutes to 14 girls. The Warriors controlled the boards, stole the ball 30 times and forced 37 turnovers. Wahoo took the win easily and advanced to the Semi-Round against Syracuse.

The gym was a sea of blue and red on Friday night. The Knights came to town for the first time as a new opponent on the Warrior schedule. Wahoo stepped up to the challenge of playing their third game in 4 days. The Warriors showed no tiredness and played extremely tough the entire game. Norfolk Catholic led at half time by 2, but the Warriors took the lead late in the third quarter when the momentum shifted into Wahoo’s favor with several steals and scores. Warriors’ strong rebounding and push to transition was too great for the Knights. Warriors improve their record to 16-1.

It’s been awhile since Wahoo played on the road, but the Warriors made it look easy. Warriors shot very well early on, and applied severe pressure defense. Raymond Central struggled to get the ball to drop with the limited amount of opportunities at the basket. The Warriors’ first half performance led to a 47-11 half time entry. The Mustangs came out fighting in the fourth quarter, unleashing a 14-7 effort, but the damage was done early. The Warrior bench contributed valuable minutes in the second half to help keep fresh legs for round three of the week. Warriors go on to win 67-32.

Monarchs are known for their scrappy aggressive style, but the Warriors didn’t let previous known characteristics bother them. Warriors took a comfortable lead at half time 36-22. Warriors erupted third quarter with their explosive defense and unstoppable offense, outscoring the Monarchs in the second half 41-12. Monarchs, on the other hand, had a hard time scoring and taking care of the ball. The Warriors finished with five players in double digits. The bench saw a great amount of time to help aid the first of three victories for the week. Wahoo wins 77-34.

DC West was no match for the Wahoo Warriors. The Warriors forced the Falcons to turn the ball over numerous times in the first quarter and throughout the entire 32 minutes. The Warriors took control of the game early and connected steals into high percentage lay-ups. Warriors pulled their press off early, and reverted to a half court defensive strategy, utilizing the entire bench. Warriors shot 53 percent from the field and dominated the positive statistical areas.

Warrior Girls Take Class B Crete into Double OT; Escape with Win

Warriors, who usually average 15 points a quarter, were held to 14 points the first half by new opponent Class B Crete Cardinals. Warriors appeared a step slow, and due to Crete’s strong defense, Warriors could not score easily. Some foul trouble in the first half brought subs in early. The Warriors’ points in the 2nd quarter were 4 free throws. Crete led 17-14 at half. Warriors refocused at half time and outscored the Cardinals 11-8 in the third quarter; however, the Warriors were still not playing solid basketball. Warriors found themselves in unfamiliar territory half way through the 4th quarter down by 8. It appeared that the Warriors were going down. A timeout was called and ‘URGENT’ became familiar. Warriors found their second wind, and Crete twisted in the storm. Warriors caused Crete to turn the ball over 7 times in 8 possessions. Finally, Wahoo captured the momentum with the help of our very loud energized fans. The crowd was wild and loud, and the score ended in regulation time 40-40! Warriors had their chances in regulation and first O.T. time to take the win, but Crete would not lie down, ending first O.T. in another tie 50-50. In the final period Warriors soon had 3 starters fouled out, but their mission to win the game was carried out. Awesome free throw shooting and solid defense rattled the Cardinals, and the Warriors went on to win 64-53.

Wahoo put together a tremendous first half effort against the Rockets. The Warriors’ smothering defensive and awesome offensive teamwork was too much for Syracuse. The Warriors were all over the floor making huge plays and unselfish acts. Warriors built an impressive 46-16 lead. Syracuse gained some composer when the Warriors took off their full court attack to start the third quarter. Warriors still had good looks at the basket and still played good defense, but many missed shots and added turnovers caused the Warriors to lose their rhythm. Syracuse was able to hit the shots and take care of the ball better during the last 16 minutes, and outscored Warriors 29-23 in the second half. Warriors forced 29 TO’s, 23 coming in the first half, and stole the ball 20 times. Warriors shot well from the 2 pt. range and outrebounded the Rocket 32-26. With such a huge lead, Warriors never were in trouble, but felt disappointed in their second half performance. Wahoo blasted the Rockets 69-45.

Warriors led for the entire game, but it wasn’t until midway through the third quarter that the Warriors pulled it together, and played with structure and hot shooting. First half seemed to be an offensive struggle for the Warriors due to North Bend’s persistent defense, and too many Warrior breakdowns on defense allowed the Tigers to hang close. Warriors entered the half time locker room up by 7. With a few adjustments the Warrior dominance began to happen late in the third quarter. Warriors went on a screaming 4th quarter with great execution and shooting, out-scoring North Bend 21-8. Warriors put the Tigers away and took the win 62-41.

Warrior Girls Overtake Neumann; Crowned Holiday Tournament Champions

You couldn’t ask for a better atmosphere to start a championship game. The gym was packed with fans and Wahoo boys reigned over Neumann in O.T. Warriors took the jump ball and laid it up in seconds. The Warriors’ extreme pressure on defense took hold of the Cavaliers earlier, and Warriors built a strong lead in the first quarter 15-6. With Neumann slowing the game down and giving limited possessions, the next three quarters for the Warriors didn’t appear too impressive; however, enough to keep Cavaliers in tact. Warriors struggled at times to run their offense in the half court, and this hindered their overall offensive performance. Warriors faired better on the free throw line, shooting 72 percent compared to the Cavs 45 percent, and had fewer T.O.’s. Warriors went on to beat Neumann and capture the holiday crown 59-44.

After a 5-day moratorium, the Warriors were glad to be back in action. Warriors did their magic on the floor and they played very well the first half. Warriors led at half 37-17 against Elkhorn South. Second half was a bit slow, but Warriors never were in jeopardy. Warriors shot 42 percent as a team from the field, and 75 percent from the free throw line. Strong rebounding gave huge advantages to the Warriors and tenacity on defense caused the Storms 27 turnovers. Warriors guarantee themselves a spot in the championship Holiday Tournament.

Wahoo Warriors built a 19-5 lead in the first quarter against Lincoln Lutheran. Wahoo’s dominating defense caused Lutheran to turn the ball over 7 times in 10 possessions. During this destroying time the Warriors went on a 15-point run with 4 different scorers contributing to the domino effect. A quiet cold shooting spell went into effect 3rd quarter on the home team, but defense never let down, allowing only 10 points to the opponents all second half. Fourth quarter offense matched the defense and Wahoo took victory over Lutheran 63-24. Wahoo, now 7-1, heads into a 5-day break, ready to take the home court with Elkhorn South on December 28 at 3:30 p.m.

The Warriors found themselves a little sluggish to start the game on Saturday night, but once the wheels and momentum started shifting in the right direction, Wahoo dominated the Centennial girls. With some explosive steals and many back-to-back layups, the Warriors exploded in the second quarter and overtook the game early. A frustrated Centennial team had a hard time scoring and Wahoo continued to be impressive until the final buzzer. Wahoo crushes Centennial 80-26.

Friday night’s game against the Ft. Calhoun Pioneers was physical; however, the Warriors’ raging defense covered every inch of the floor, causing tremendous havoc to the Pioneers. The Pioneers held height advantage, but the Warriors took advantage in all other aspects, limiting the number of shot opportunities. Warriors stole the ball 26 times and caused the Pioneers to turn the ball over 37 times. The Warriors held Ft. Calhoun to just 2 points in the 2nd quarter, which set the tone of the game early. Warriors shot the ball well from the arch connecting on 9 of 19. Warriors defeat Pioneers 68-37.

The Warriors got off to a ‘crisp’ start and took control of the game from start to finish. West Point could not handle the pressure defense and the speed the Warriors like to play. The Warriors’ experience, depth and execution caused the Cadets to turn the ball over and give limited offensive attempts. The Warriors allowed the Cadets an average of 5 points per quarter, while the Warriors shot 46 percent from the Field. The Warriors out-rebounded and stressed the Cadets badly throughout the entire game. Warriors defeated West Point 80-21

It was the first time playing on Treynor's home court and the first time the Warriors experienced a box and 1 defense.

After a few adjustments, the Warriors went on a 47-15 explosion throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters. The Warrior defense was too much for the Cardinals to handle, forcing Treynor to a huge number of turnovers and limited offensive opportunities. Warriors defeated Cardinals 69-41.

Warriors Handed First Season Loss by Class B Powerhouse Seward

Seward jumped to an 8-0 lead and continued to keep Wahoo scoreless until Bennett was fouled and connected on 2 free throws. 

Warriors had limited good looks at the basket due to Seward’s solid defense and nothing would fall. It was a raging storm that soon ended after the first period.  

The Warriors finally got their groove through the second quarter and outscored the Bluejays 20-15 heading into the locker room down by 14. Solid defense and attacking offense allowed Warriors to close the gap to 8, but a Bluejay three pointer to end the third quarter pushed the gap back to 11 points.  

Warriors outscored Seward for three quarters, but the damages in the first quarter proved too much for the Warriors to overcome against undefeated Seward.

Warriors Dominate Second Half to Defeat Bennington in Season Opener

Bennington might have put in the first 2 points and led after 8 minutes on their home court, but the Warriors stole the show soon after. The bench gave some good minutes due to some foul trouble and helped the Warriors build a 7-point lead ending the half  31-24.

The Warriors came out second half with a lot of power and expanded the lead to a 42-26 before a timeout was called. Fourth quarter performances led to a 64-45 victory over pre-season 6th-ranked Bennington Badgers.
