Students make contact & connections with representatives of numerous colleges and career fields
Southeast Community College (SCC) hosted a career fair on our campus on Tuesday, March 29 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Two area schools also took advantage of this opportunity to bring their students. Instructors and representatives were here to share information about the following programs:
Electronic Systems Technology
Early Childhood Education
Practical Nursing Program & Associate Degree Nursing
Law Enforcement/Homeland Security
Adult and Juvenile Services and Corrections
Automotive Technology, Powersports Technology & Dealership Programs
Design and Drafting Technology
Geographic Information Systems (Satellite Technology)
Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) & Plumbing Technology
Land Surveying/Civil Engineering
Computer Information Technology
Energy Generation Operations (Power Plant Technology)
Agriculture Management & Production
It was a value-added experience for students. Many didn't realize that industries can overlap. One student came in not expecting to find anything of interest because they "want to be a lawyer and won't go to SCC for that." Once it was pointed out that EVERY industry has a legal team/department, they began to look at this opportunity differently. Same for a student wanting to go to medical school. After mentioning they could take general education classes and be a part of the academic transfer program or even become a CNA or Pharmacy Technician to work while they are getting their other degree, it gave students a new perspective.
Many teachers spoke about the value as well. Students were given a card to collect five signatures from different representatives to turn in at the end for some fun SCC swag! This encouraged students to make eye contact, shake hands, ask questions and gather information from adults they don't see on a regular basis.
We hope this becomes a regular event and will continue to grow with more departments represented and other area schools participating. Huge thanks to Bailey Michaels from SCC for reaching out and asking us to be a part of this successful event!
