Seven WHS Students Attend Annual Latino/Hispanic Summit

Sotelo Receives Star Student Award

On Monday, October 22, seven Wahoo High School students attended the 9th annual Latino/Hispanic Summit. This year's theme was "La Raza Cósmica" or "Dare to Dream."

The purpose of this summit is to "increase youth leadership opportunities, showcase Hispanic/Latino student achievement, highlight resources available to support student success and inspire ACTION for creating positive futures." 

The keynote speaker and published author Reyna Grande got sophomore Ivan Sotelo thinking about how hard people have to work to go to college--especially from underprivileged backgrounds.

Students attended three workshops throughout the day on topics related to the summit's purpose. Sessions included: financial aid and scholarship information, leadership and bullying, college readiness, current legislation relating to education for Latino students and information on interpreting. 

Freshman Austin Hand said, "It was a lot of fun, and better than last year. I learned to just be yourself--not to follow others".

Wahoo's own Zendy Sotelo was a recipient of the Summit's "Star Student" award. This award is given to Latino/Hispanic students throughout the state who demonstrate high academic success. Sotelo was one of 36 students to receive the award. Over 600 were in attendance. 

Regarding the summit Sotelo commented, "it is a great opportunity to get students thinking about what they want to do with their future. I was honored to receive the award."

Overall the summit was another success. In the words of freshman Cynthia Ruiz, "I LOVED it! I can't wait to go next year!"
