Business Law Class Takes Field Trip to Saunders County Court House
Students Witness District Court's Last Session in Existing Facility
Launch the media gallery 1 playerThe Wahoo High School Business Law class experienced a part of history as they attended District Court on Monday, March 23.
It was the last time court would be held in the majestic courtroom in the Court House. On Wednesday the District Court would be moving to their new contemporary courtroom in the new judicial center. The purpose of the field trip was to introduce students to the proceedings of a district court and the various career options available. The Business Law students witnessed a variety of cases including arraignments, a hearing, and sentencings.
After viewing court, the students took a tour of the courthouse. They then went to view the Register of Deeds office and got to go into the vault, which stores recorded deeds dating back to 1859. Linda Semrad, Deputy Registrar of Deeds, showed the students quitclaim deeds, warranty deeds and explained how they worked. The students were also shown Numerical Index Books, which show everything that has ever been recorded in the office since 1859. Semrad also told the students that they could come in at any time and figure out who owned their homes dating back to the 1800’s. Some think this would be a fun summer project.
After their courthouse tour, the students met to discuss their experience. Students had the following comments: Sarah Chvatal - “I really enjoyed the case where they had witnesses and testimony, it was really intense.” Amy O’Sullivan - “I enjoyed the Register of Deeds and how the information dated back to 1859.” Jason Demaray - “I really enjoyed being a part of history by attending the last court session in that court room.” Shanly Steffes – “I enjoyed watching the interesting cases and watching the accused victims fight for what they believed.”
