Spring 2010 Business Department & FBLA Updates
WHS Business & Accounting Students Keep Busy
Wahoo High School students in the Business Department and FBLA have been extremely busy lately! The following are brief descriptions as to what has been occurring in and out of the classroom:
Southeast Community College Business Competition
Fourteen students took part in the Business Competition. Joe Nabity and Skye Sabatka each received an Outstanding rating for their Job Interview competition. This competition included preparing a cover letter, resume, and participating in a mock job interview. Joe also placed 5th in Accounting I and Emily Brodahl 7th and Chloe Davidson 9th in Intro to Business.
Members of Mrs. Shanahan’s Economics class are studying the Stock Market by taking part in an interactive on-line game. We have three teams of three students competing with 282 teams from across the state. Each team is given $100,000 to invest as they like in the stock market. So far none of the teams have made a profit, but we are hoping that changes before ending the game on April 1!
To learn about the stock market, we invited two experts into our class for advice and direction: Mr. Ed Rastovski, Wahoo Public Schools’ superintendent, and Mr. Al Grandgenett, Edward Jones and present school board member. Both gentlemen had a lot of good information to give the students on research, choosing the stocks, and watching the ups and downs of the economy.
The students are really enjoying the Stock Market Game and experiencing first hand the affects of the current economy.
Business Law
Class learns first hand about County Zoning Ordinances:
George Borreson, Saunders County Zoning Administrator, visited the Business Law class to enlighten them on how they are affected by county zoning laws. He gave many examples of how zoning laws protect the county’s citizens by protecting our water, land usage, and safety of homeowners. He also gave students information on careers in zoning and various types of inspections.
Class takes a field trip to County and District Courts and to the Register of Deed Office:
The students were able to experience first hand what goes on in a courtroom by attending a session in each of the District and County Courts. One interesting part of the morning was viewing small claims court cases. The students then proceeded to the Register of Deeds office. Don Clark gave the students a quick overview of the purpose and function of his office. The students have been studying warranty and quitclaim deeds, so they were able to view actual deeds and learn their purpose and how and where they are filed.
Personal Finance
Personal Finance members learned the basics of what banks have to offer from 1st National Bank of Wahoo President Stuart Krejci. He brought the students examples of banking forms and went over the dos and don’ts of using credit.
FBLA members raise funds for March of Dimes
Wahoo FBLA members held their annual competition against Raymond Central’s FBLA by selling paper chain lengths. The paper chains are then carried onto the basketball court during half-time of the Wahoo vs. Raymond boys game to see who raised the most money. Raymond won this year by raising $333.81 while Wahoo raised $255.43. Wahoo’s losing FBLA President, Kyle W., then received a pie in the face thrown by a Raymond Central FBLA member.
FBLA Week
FBLA members were recognized by the officers during National FBLA Week with a variety of activities such as locker notes, donuts, etc. On Friday the members showed their appreciation to the high school staff for all of the support they give FBLA during the year by providing them with breakfast. FLBA members cooked and served breakfast to the staff and then were able to partake themselves. Members gave the group a new nickname for the day: “Future Breakfast Leaders of America”!
