Woodworking Students Restore Antique Table for MS/HS Library
Peterson/Wood Salvage a Piece of District 70 History
Launch the media gallery 1 playerAn old table was recently brought back to life by two Wahoo High School woodworking students.
The table was built sometime in the early 1900's and was found at the District 70 School northwest of Wahoo shortly after it closed. It is a round pedestal claw foot oak table that at one time was expandable with the use of extra leaves.
The table no longer had any leaves and was simply screwed together. It was in pretty rough shape after many years of use and multiple repairs. WHS Senior Mike Peterson took the table apart and cleaned up each part individually. He then stripped all the original finish off the table top and sanded it smooth. He sanded all the parts by hand and put many hours of work into carefully reassembling the table back together the way it was originally.
The leaves were gone so the table is now permanently round. Peterson spent an entire semester working on the table and had it stained and ready to be sealed at the end of the 2008-2009 school year. WHS Senior Josh Wood picked up where Mike left off, and applied the polyurethane to protect the finish. He spent about a month working on the finish to prepare the table for use in the library. He used a glossy oil based polyurethane, giving the table a nice shine.
The table looks great, and it is something that both Mike and Josh were very proud of.
