Girls Golfers End 2011 Season with Trip to State Tournament
Harris Takes Fourth
The Wahoo Girls Golf team finished off a very successful 2011 season on Tuesday at the Class C State Tournament, played at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
The ladies battled breezy conditions on the tight course. The Warriors were able to finish day two with a 448 team score that put them at an 899 two-day total. This was good for 12th place out of 15 teams.
Senior Emma Harris capped her brilliant high school career by finishing in 4th place. Harris shot a 3 over par 39 on the front. Harris found trouble on the back, but still was able to shoot a 44 for a final score of 83. For the season Harris finished no worse than 4th in every meet. For her career, her 4th place finish gave her a school record 35 top ten finishes!
Fellow Senior Nicole Pearson cut 7 shots off her day one finish on day two. Pearson finished with a 106 on her second round. Pearson had 5 pars on her round, but found some trouble on the challenging course.
Sophomore Rosie Welsh tied her season best score of 127 on day two after shooting a 128 on day one. Freshman Carlea Gall followed up her day one score of 128 with a 132 on the second day. Freshman Shauna Fiala carded a 136 on day two after shooting a 131 on day one.
“Emma finishing 4th was a good way to cap off her career. She didn’t finish the last nine like she wanted to, but I was very pleased with how she was able to bounce back from back-to-back bad holes. It was a lot of fun this season watching all the girls improve throughout the season. I would like to thank everyone for their support,” concluded Coach Curtis Carlson.

Day One of State Golf Tournament in the Books
Harris Tied for Second; Tournament Concludes Tuesday
The Wahoo Girls Golf Team returned to the course Monday for the first day of the Class C Girls State Golf Tournament.
The Warriors recorded a team score of 451.
The Warriors were led once again by Senior Emma Harris. Harris is currently tied for 2nd after carding an 82 on back-to-back 41’s. She is five shots behind the leader.
Fellow Senior Nicole Pearson shot a 113. Sophomore Rosie Welsh added a 128, along with freshman Carlea Gall, who was able to overcome an opening 71 by following it up with a 57. Fellow freshman Shauna Fiala rounded out the scoring with a 131.
The Warriors will wrap up their season Tuesday, Day 2 of State, at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
Warrior Golfers Take Runner-Up at District; Harris and Pearson Go 1-2
Team State-Bound! (Oct. 10-11 in Columbus)
The Wahoo girls golf team captured the runner-up plaque at the C-2 District Golf Tournament at Miracle Hills in Omaha on Tuesday.
The Warrior’s team score was 20 shots ahead of the third place team Lincoln Lutheran.
The Class C Girls State Golf Championships will be held Monday, October 10 and Tuesday, October 11 at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
The Warriors were able to capitalize on the 1-2 finish of seniors Emma Harris and Nicole Pearson. Harris took home the medalist honor with a 77. She shot a 40 on the front and followed it up with a 2 over par 37 on the back. Pearson finished as the runner-up by carding back-to-back 45’s.
Freshman Carlea Gall and Rosie Welsh rounded out the team scoring shooting 121 and 135. Freshman Shauna Fiala carded a 157.
“It was really exciting to qualify the team for state. The senior girls really stepped up today to lead the team to the runner-up finish. Both Emma and Nicole hit their tee shots really solid today and that helped them post a couple impressive scores,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “The 1-2 finish was very fitting for those girls as they have worked extremely hard and put in countless hours on the course and range improving their games to get to this point.”
Gall Captures Medalist Honors in Home JV Dual with Fremont
Golfers Prepare for Oct. 1 Capitol Conference Tournament (in Arlington)
The Wahoo Girls Golf team returned to the course on Thursday in a dual with Fremont’s JV team. The dual was hosted at Hilltop Country Club.
The Warriors were able to take advantage of playing their home course, winning the dual by a score of 239 to 260.
Leading the way for the young Warrior team was Freshman Carlea Gall. Gall took home the medalist honors with a 54 on the challenging course.
Fellow Freshman Shauna Fiala also shot under sixty with a 58. This was good for runner-up.
Freshmen Emily Pestal and Kristen Tomjack added a 62 and a 65 to the team score. Katie Welsh and Rosie Welsh carded 70 and 75.
“This was a great opportunity for the younger girls to step up today. For Carlea to shoot a 54 in just her first year of golf was awesome. To make the scores the freshmen posted even more impressive was the fact that the wind was really gusting today,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “It helped to be playing on our home course, which was in great shape. I really appreciate the job Chad Koranda does keeping the course looking great and accommodating us any way possible.”
Harris Captures Medalist Honors by 10 Shots at Elmwood-Murdock Tournament

The Wahoo Girls Golf team on Monday, September 26, took part in the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational played at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Club.
The Warriors shot a team score of 400 to finish in fourth place.
The Warriors were once again led by Senior Emma Harris. Harris took home the medalist honors shooting a 72. Her score was the best on the day by 10 shots.
Senior Nicole Pearson also medaled for the Warriors finishing in 9th place with a 91.
Senior Katie Welsh, sophomore Rosie Welsh, and freshman Emily Pestal also competed for the Warriors, shooting 120, 119, and 118.
“The girls played well today on a tight course. Emma struck the ball really well today and her final score showed it,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Three Warriors Place at Arlington Invite
Next Stop: Elmwood-Murdock Tournament Sept. 26
The Wahoo Girls Golf team returned to action on Tuesday, September 19, at the Arlington Invitational played at Fremont Golf Club.
The Warriors captured the runner-up team spot with a 455. The runner-up finish was the best on the year. Three Warrior golfers placed in the top fifteen on the challenging par 75 course.
Senior Emma Harris captured the medalist honors firing an 85. Harris captured her 4th medalist honor of the year at an invitational by 7 shots.
Fellow Senior Nicole Pearson also placed highly for the Warriors, finishing in a tie for 4th place. Pearson carded a 111.
Freshman Shauna Fiala shot a personal best round of 121. This was good for 12th place and her first varsity medal. Freshman Emily Pestal and Sophomore Rosie Welsh rounded out the team shooting 138 and 139.
“I was really pleased with the second place team finish. The girls did a great job of handling a challenging course on a breezy day. Any time you have three girls place and as team you finish runner-up you have to be pleased,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Harris Sets Dual Victory School Record at Plattsmouth; Takes Close 2nd at Crete
Golfers to Play in Sept. 19 Arlington Invite (at Fremont Golf Club)
Crete Invitational (September 16):
The Wahoo Girls Golf team capped off their busy week on Friday at the Crete Invitational, played at College Heights Golf Club.
The Warriors shot a 448 team score, which was good for 8th place out of 14 teams.
The Warriors were once again led by Senior Emma Harris. Harris carded an 86, which was just one-shot back behind the medalist. Harris carded a 42 on the front, with a birdie on the challenging par 3 3rd hole.
Freshman Carlea Gall continued to cut shots off her score while carding a career best 115. Both of Gall’s rounds where in the 50’s. Gall also played the 3rd hole better than almost the entire field, taking a bogey on it both times.
Senior Nicole Pearson carded a 118. Sophomore Rosie Welsh added a 129 to the team score, and Kristen Tomjack added a 162.
“The girls handled the course really well. The greens are definitely a challenge at Crete, and that gave the girls some issues. Even though the girls didn’t have one of their better days putting, they still were able to card their second best team score of the year, which is always good,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
The Warriors will return to action on Tuesday at the Arlington Invitational, played at Fremont Golf Club.
Plattsmouth Dual (September 15):
The Warriors traveled to Plattsmouth on Thursday for a dual played at Bay Hills Golf Course. This was the second time in a week that they played the course.
Senior Emma Harris captured the medalist honors with a 43. This victory gave Harris the school record for most dual victories.
“This is a great accomplishment for Emma that says a lot about the success she has had throughout her career,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Fellow Senior Nicole Pearson took home the runner up with a 52. This score was 8 shots better than her front nine during the Plattsmouth Invitational.
Freshman Shauna Fiala had a great day on the links carding a 63, which was a 13-shot improvement from her previous round.
Fellow Freshman Carlea Gall was one shot back with a 64. Freshmen Emily Pestal and Kristen Tomjack added scores in the 60’s with a 68 and 69. Sophomore Rosie Welsh carded a 71, and Senior Katie Welsh added a 77.
For the dual the Warriors were edged out by one shot, shooting a team score of 230, compared to Plattsmouth’s 229. This was the third straight event where Plattsmouth has edged the Warriors by 1 shot.
Harris Captures Third Medalist Honor at Blair Invite
Golfers Head to Plattsmouth Sept. 15
The Wahoo Girls Golf team returned to the links on Monday at the Blair Invitational, played at River Wilds Golf Club. The team battled a strong wind and warm temperatures to shoot a 463 team score.
Emma Harris captured the medalist honor for the third time this season during an Invitational. The Senior shot back-to-back 44’s for an 88. This was good for a 1-shot victory over Jacy Hawk from Gretna.
Fellow Senior Nicole Pearson was able to overcome a slow start to post a 113.
“I was really pleased with how Nicole was able to bounce back after her rocky start. She made a quick adjustment and it really turned her game around,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Freshman Emily Pestal fired a 130 in her first varsity meet of her career. Fellow freshman Kristen Tomjack shot another PR with a 132. Carlea Gall rounded out the team with a 140.
“I was really pleased with how the team played. The girls had to deal with a 2-club wind all day, which always makes things interesting. The course also was a challenge as the greens are always quick and have a lot of undulations. It was great to see Emma win the medalist honors for the 3rd time this season. I was also very pleased with Emily’s score for her first time playing 18 holes,” commented Carlson.
Harris Captures Championship at Sept. 8 Plattsmouth Invitational
Two Personal Records Set on Challenging Course!
The Wahoo Girls Golf team returned to action for the first time in a week at the Sept. 8 Plattsmouth Invitational, played at the challenging Bay Hills Golf Club. The Warriors posted a team score of 455 on the hilly course.
Senior Emma Harris returned to her winning form, capturing the championship by 7 shots. Harris carded an 85 with 1 birdie and 6 pars during her round.
“Emma played well again today. She was able to overcome three double bogeys to post a very good score on such a challenging course,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Fellow Senior Nicole Pearson shot a 52 on her first 9 holes to finish with a 112. Pearson hit the ball well, but ran into some issues on and around the sloped greens.
Freshman Carlea Gall continued her stellar first year of golf, shooting a PR score of 125. Fellow freshman Kristen Tomjack carded 133 in her first varsity 18-hole meet. Freshman Shauna Fiala carded a 151 to round out the scores for the Warriors.
“I was really pleased with how the girls handled the course today. This is one of the hardest courses we play all year, and we had two girls shoot PR’s. The most exciting thing is that you can see the girls’ scores continue to drop. There is still a lot of room for improvement though. Today as a team we averaged 46 putts, which means that we still have a lot of room for improvement. It will be exciting to see how the season continues to progress,” commented Carlson.
Harris Takes 4th at Seward Invitational

The Wahoo Girls Golf team capped off a busy week taking part at the Seward Invitational on August 26. The Warriors shot a team score of 446.
Senior Emma Harris once again led the way for the Warriors. Harris shot a 3 over par 77 on the par 74 Seward Country Club course. This personal best score was good enough for 4th place. Harris fired an even par 37 on the front nine and followed it up with a 40 on the back. Harris had 4 birdies during her round.
Senior Nicole Pearson had another good showing shooting a 99, which just missed placing. Pearson had 4 pars during her round.
Sophomore Rosie Welsh shot a personal best 127, which was a 33 shot improvement over last year at Seward. Freshmen Shauna Fiala and Carlea Gall both got their first experience playing in an Invitational, shooting 143 and 145. Gall got her first birdie of her career on her last hole of the day.
“I was pleased with how the girls played today. This was a very challenging field of competitors. This was about as close to a state tournament field as you can get. In the group that Emma played with, each of those girls have placed in the top ten at state over the last couple years. It was impressive that Emma was able to have the low score in her group by a couple shots. For the younger girls it was a great chance to get varsity experience,” said Coach Carlson.
The Warriors will return to action on Thursday at the Elmwood-Murdock quadrangular.
Harris Wins Beatrice Invitational for Second Year!
Pearson Also Medals in 7th; Next Competition: Aug. 26 Seward Invite
The golf team returned to action at the Beatrice Invitational played at the challenging Beatrice Country Club on August 22.
Senior Emma Harris continued her winning ways while taking home the individual championship by 6 shots. This was the second year in a row Harris has taken home that honor. She shot a front side 43 and followed it up with a steady 38 on the back. On the 38 she had 2 bogeys and 7 pars while putting only 13 times.
Senior Nicole Pearson also medaled, finishing in 7th place in a quality field of competitors. Pearson shot a 108. A highlight of her round was making a birdie on the par 4, 245-yard 17th hole. Pearson hit her tee shot to the back of the green and then two putted from fifty feet out for the birdie.
“Today was a good challenge playing a difficult course with the wind blowing. Both girls really played well today on one of the toughest courses we will play all year long. Both Emma and Nicole hit some really good shots that put them in good positions to score,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Girls Golf Teams Makes Good Showing at First Season Dual in Schuyler
Harris Takes the Win; Ties for Most Dual Victories
The Girls’ Golf team got off to an early start with their dual at Schuyler Central High School on Thursday, August 18.
Taking Medalist honors was WHS senior Emma Harris! Harris shot a 4 over 41 that included a birdie and 3 pars. The victory moved her into a tie with Kara Jeppson for the most Dual victories with 8.
Senior Nicole Pearson also had a strong showing, carding a 50. Pearson had 4 pars during her round. Pearson had pars on both of the par 3’s after hitting tee shots to within 10 feet.

“I was pleased with how the girls played for the first time out this year. Emma struggled with consistency off the tee today, but was still even through her first 5 holes before bogeying out. Nicole is hitting her irons amazingly. She was inside of 10 feet on both par 3’s and her lines were right at the pin on both. It was a great day to gain some experience on the golf course for all the girls,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
