Junior Shelby Griego wrapped up the season for the Warriors at the Class B State Championship at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
Griego finished with a two-day total of 197, which was good for 26th place out of 72 competitors.
On day 1 Griego battled through early morning rain and then gusty winds over 30 mph to shoot 99.
On her first nine (back nine) Griego got off to a hot start by making par on her first two holes. Unfortunately Shelby got into trouble on her third hole, making a 9 after finding the greenside bunker. Even with the bad hole, Griego finished the nine with a 49.
On her second nine (the front nine) Griego played bogey to double bogey golf on all the holes until the last one. There she had to avoid some trouble and hit a couple shots poorly. Even with an 8 on the par 4 hole, she finished with a 50.
“Shelby hit the ball pretty well off the tee today. This really helped her score. Unfortunately she just had the two bad holes that were the difference between shooting a 99 and a 92, which would have put her in contention to medal,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
On day 2 Griego shot a 98 while battling very soggy conditions after some early morning rain. Not only did the golfers battle the wet conditions, they also had to fight windy conditions and temperatures in the upper 30’s at the start of the round.
After starting her round with a triple and double bogey, Griego played the next six holes in 4 over par. On the ninth hole Shelby found trouble again. Griego hit her second shot in the hazard, which led to an 8 on the par 4 hole. Even with the quadruple bogey, Griego finished with a 48.
On her back nine Griego finished with a 50. She had a couple pars (made par on both of the par 3), a couple bogeys, and a couple double bogeys before getting to the par 4 17th hole. Playing back into the wind, Griego found trouble off the tee and hit a couple bad chips to finish with a 9. She was able to bounce back with a bogey on her last hole to finish with a 98.
“Shelby didn’t strike the ball as well today off the tee except on the par 3’s. She really had to scramble to shoot 98. If you eliminate the two big blow-up holes, she ends up shooting a 91,” Carlson commented.
“It was good for Shelby to see that she has the ability to place at State if she can just clean up a couple bad holes each nine. She didn’t play her best golf and she still was not that far off,” Carlson said.

Senior Shelby Griego: State Qualifier!
B-1 District Tournament - 10.2.17
The Wahoo Girls Golf team returned to action Monday at the B-1 District Tournament, played at Tiburon Golf Club.
The girls battled soggy conditions to finish in seventh place with a team score of 538.
Leading the way for the Warriors was junior Shelby Griego with a state-qualifying 8th place finish! Griego shot a 49 on the front nine and battled through 3 rough holes to finish with a 59 on the back.
“Shelby actually played so much better than what her final score shows,” commented Coach Curtis Carlson. “She had a really rough 4-hole stretch that almost cost her a trip to state. Luckily she was able to battle back to finish strong on the last hole.”
Senior Maddie Rappl capped off her career for the Warriors with a 125.
“Maddie hit the ball really well at times. She just had a few bad holes. We will really miss her energy and leadership next year,” Carlson said.
Also playing for Wahoo were freshman Ellen Carlson (145) and junior Gabi Girmus (160).
“Both girls had some really good shots today. After seeing how far they came from the beginning of the season, I am excited for next year,” Carlson added. “Today the course was really wet with all the rains we have had lately. When you combine wet conditions with thick rough, it made it challenging to score. Almost the entire field was several shots above their season averages.”
Griego will get a chance to continue her season Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10, at the Class B State Girls Golf Championship, played at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.

Warriors take runner-up @ Elmwood-Murdock Invite!
Elmwood-Murdock Invitational - 9.27.17
The Warrior Girls Golf Team finished as runners-up at the Sept. 27 Elmwood-Murdock Invitational!
After being rained out on Monday, the Warriors were back in action at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational. After a couple days of rain, the girls had to battle wet conditions.
The Warriors finished runner-up in the team competition after shooting a 407.
Individually leading the way was junior Shelby Griego with an 88. Her score was good for 5th place.
Just missing placing tenth by one shot was senior Maddie Rappl with a 101.
Also playing for the Warriors were freshman Ellen Carlson (105) and junior Gabi Girmus (113).
The team will be back in action on Monday at the B-1 District Tournament at Tiburon Golf Course.

Griego takes runner-up @ Arlington Invite (missing championship by 1 shot); Team takes 3rd of 10 schools
Arlington Invitational - 9.19.17
On Tuesday the Lady Warriors were back on the course at the Arlington Invitational. The tournament was played on the challenging par 75 Fremont Golf Club.
The Warrior team finished 3rd out of 10 schools with a 523.
Individually leading the way was Junior Shelby Griego. Griego finished as the runner-up after carding a 100. She was just 1 shot behind the champion.
“Shelby did a really good job of scrambling today. She struggled to consistently hit off the tee with her driver and that put her in some tough situations,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “To not play her best golf and still finish as runner-up says a lot about where her game is.”
Following Griego was freshman Ellen Carlson. Carlson shot a couple rounds in the mid 60’s to finish with a 131.
Also playing for the Warriors were senior Maddie Rappl and junior Gabi Girmus. Both finished with a 146.
“Today the girls had to battle windy conditions on what is probably the toughest course we play all season. The scores were a bit higher due to the combination of the course being a par 75, compared to most courses that are a par 72, and the fact that there is a lot of trouble on the course. There are some things each girl needs to work on, but overall I was happy with how they played,” Carlson added.
The girls will be back at it on Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational, played at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course.

Griego takes 3rd @ Blair Invitational!
Blair Invitational - 9.11.17
Shelby Griego finished 3rd at the Sept. 11 Blair Invite.
After resting up during the weekend, the Warriors were back on the course Monday at the Blair Invitational. The event was played at River Wilds Golf Course.
Junior Shelby Griego finished in 3rd place with a 93. After getting off to a slow start on her first nine holes, Griego turned around her round by making a birdie on the par-3 14th hole. On the back she finished with a 43 on the challenging course.
"Shelby hit some really good shots today. Her short game wasn't great today, but she still managed to shoot a good score," said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Also playing for the Warriors was junior Gabi Girmus, who finished with a 132.
"Gabi hit about half her tee shots really well," Carlson stated. "She just struggled to hit her next shots the way she wanted to."
The girls will have the rest of the week off before returning to the course next Tuesday at the Arlington Invitational at Fremont Golf Club.

Griego leaves a difficult Plattsmouth Invite w/9th place finish
Plattsmouth Invitational - 9.7.17
On Thursday the girls were back at Bay Hills Golf Course taking part in the Plattsmouth Invitational.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Shelby Griego. Griego finished in 9th place with a 109.
“Shelby was not very happy with how she played today,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “The positive thing is that even though she didn’t have her best day, she still finished in the top 10. Golf is a sport where some days you have it and some you don’t, and on the days you don’t have it you just have to scramble. Scoring at Bay Hills is hard because you never have a flat lie.”
Freshman Ellen Carlson had her best round of the year, finishing with a 115, which was good for a tie for 15th place. Since she lost the tiebreaker she finished in 16th place.
“Ellen has really improved since the start of the season. For a first year golfer to just miss placing is awesome,” Carlson commented.
Junior Gabi Girmus added a 135 for the Warriors.
After taking the weekend off the Warriors will be back in action at the Blair Invitational played at River Wilds Golf Course.

Warriors take 2nd @ Plattsmouth; Griego medals by 8 shots
Plattsmouth Triangular - 9.5.17
The girls were back in action on Tuesday taking part in a triangular with Plattsmouth and Blair. The triangular took place a Bay Hills Golf Course.
The Warriors finished second with a 236. Blair took home first with a 227 and Plattsmouth finished with a 237.
Taking home the medalist honors by 8 shots was junior Shelby Griego. Griego finished was a 43 on the very challenging course. The highlight of her round was making a birdie on her final hole.
Freshman Ellen Carlson had the next best score with a 61. Five shots back of her were senior Maddie Rappl and junior Gabi Girmus.
The Warriors will be back at Bay Hills on Thursday, taking part in the Plattsmouth Invitational.

Griego posts past decade's lowest 9-hole score @ Elmwood-Murdock Quad!
Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular - 8.31.17
On Thursday the Wahoo Girls Golf team was back in action at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course. The Warriors took on Elmwood-Murdock, Arlington, and Cedar Bluffs in a quadrangular.
Junior Shelby Griego continued her steady play to take home her third medalist honors of the year. Griego finished with a 37 on the par 30 golf course. Her 37 was the lowest 9-hole score on the course over the past ten years!
“Shelby played well today,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Grandpa’s Woods is not a very easy course to go low on. The greens are really small and some have a lot of slope to them. The exciting part about her score is that she easily could have cut a few more shots.”
Behind Griego was Freshman Ellen Carlson. Carlson played her best round of the year to shoot a 51.
“Ellen’s game has been really coming together the last couple of rounds. She is improving on and around the green, which is really helping her scores,” Carlson commented.
Also playing for the Warriors was Junior Gabi Girmus. Girmus finished the day with a 67.
“If Gabi can get a little more consistent with her swing, her scores are going to go down quickly. She hit some really good shots today,” added Carlson. “On hole 9 her tee shot was pin high, just off the green on the par 3, 145 yard hole.”
The girls will get a few days off before returning to the course to play in a triangular with Blair and Plattsmouth on Tuesday at Bay Hills Golf Course.

Griego medals @ home quadrangular
Wahoo Quad - 8.28.17
After taking the weekend off, the Warriors were back in action hosting a quadrangular with Fremont Bergan, Arlington, and Fremont High JV.
The quad took place at the challenging Hilltop Country Club. The team shot a 258 to finish runner-up to Fremont Bergan.
Taking home the medalist honors was Junior Shelby Griego. Griego finished with a 48.
“Shelby continued her solid play. She didn’t have her best day, but some of that is the fact that our course is very challenging. Her 48 was just the fourth score under 50 on our course during a dual in the last 10 years,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Senior Maddie Rappl had the next best score for the Warriors with a 60. Also playing for the team was Freshman Ellen Carlson (69) and Junior Gabi Girmus (81).
The girls will be back in action on Thursday at the Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular, played at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course.

Griego takes 6th @ Seward Invitational; others cut multiple shots from previous scores
Seward Invitational - 8.25.17
Junior Shelby Griego receives her 6th place medal at the Aug. 25 Seward Invitational. Griego has been Wahoo's consistent leader so far this season.
The Warriors capped a busy week on Friday at the Seward Invitational, and the girls once again had near perfect conditions.
The team was led by junior Shelby Griego’s 6th place finish. Griego shot an 86 on the par 74 course. Shelby came out on fire, shooting 5 over on the front nine. During the 42 she had 5 bogeys and 4 pars.
On the back nine, Griego was able to overcome a triple bogey on her 10th hole to shoot a 44. Griego finished the day with 8 pars, 9 bogeys, and the 1 triple bogey.
“I was really impressed with Shelby today. On half the holes she was on the green in regulation, which means she had a putt for birdie. Probably the most impressive part was that she was able to bounce back from a blow up hole at the start of her second nine,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “During this week she broke both 100 and then 90 during a competitive round for the first time. It really shows all the extra time she has put in on the course is paying off.”
Following Griego was Senior Maddie Rappl. Rappl carded a personal best round of 107. She shot a 54 on the front and was able to trim another shot off on the back. Beyond a couple bad holes on the front, she played bogey golf.
On the back nine her round was highlighted by nearly chipping in for eagle on the par-5 8th hole. After almost falling in on the chip, the ball finished a foot away for an easy tap-in birdie.
“Maddie played some really good holes,” Carlson said. “The biggest thing is just being consistent off the tee box. When she hit a good tee shot she made bogeys or better. On the holes she hit poor shots, she put up bigger numbers.”
Also playing for the Warriors were Junior Gabi Girmus and Freshman Ellen Carlson. Both were able to cut 20 or more shots off their scores from the Beatrice Invite. Girmus finished with a 130 and Carlson was 6 shots back with a 136.
“I was really happy with how both girls performed. Both girls hit some really good shots. They just need to work on getting more familiar with what club to hit from different yardages. They also need to slow down and take a little more time on the greens,” commented Carlson. “If they can do these things they will cut a bunch of shots off their scores.”
“Overall I was really happy with our performance. Shelby cut 28 shots off her score from last year and Maddie cut 13 shots. As a team we shot a 459, which, when you have two first year golfers, is pretty good,” Carlson added.
The Warriors will enjoy the weekend off before returning to play a home quadrangular with Arlington, Fremont Bergan, and Fremont High’s JV team on Monday. The event will start at 3:00 p.m. at Hilltop Country Club.

Griego takes 6th @ Beatrice Invitational

Junior Shelby Griego has started off strong as the Warriors' leader in girls golf this year. Above, Griego is pictured receiving her 6th place medal at the Sept. 22 Beatrice Invitational.
Griego also took home the medalist honors at the season-opening Schuyler dual on Sept. 21..
On Tuesday the Warriors had near perfect conditions at the Beatrice Invitational.
Even though the weather was amazing, the girls still had to take on a very challenging Beatrice Country Club.
Junior Shelby Griego was able to take advantage of that to shoot a 98, which was good for 6th place.
“Shelby hit the ball really well off the tee,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “She was never able to get her birdie and par putts to fall. She had ten bogeys on the day, and almost all of them were finished with a tap in putt. Shelby is just the second golfer that I have coached over 10 years to break 100 at Beatrice Country Club.”
Junior Gabi Girmus was able to cut 11 shots off her first nine to finish with a 151.
Freshman Ellen Carlson cut 2 shots off her first nine to finish with a 153. Carlson did record her first-ever par on the par-3 5th hole.
The Warriors will have a couple days of practice before returning to action Friday at the Seward Invitational.

Griego leads Warrior charge in season-opening Schuyler dual
Schuyler Dual - 8.21.17
The Wahoo Girls Golf team kicked off their season Monday at the Schuyler Golf Club. The Warriors took on Schuyler Central High School in an event where there was no team score.
Junior Shelby Griego took home the medalist honors after carding a 52. Her round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 third hole.
“Shelby hit the ball pretty well today. If she avoids a blow up on the last hole she would have shot in the 40’s. That is something that doesn’t happen very often on that course,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Five shots back was Senior Maddie Rappl. Rappl’s 57 was the second-best score on the day.
“Maddie really hit her irons well,” commented Carlson. “If she can get a little more consistency off the tee should could cut a bunch of shots off her score.”
Playing for the first time were Junior Gabi Girmus and Freshman Ellen Carlson.
“Both girls hit some really good shots. They just need to work on eliminating the bad swings,” Carlson added.
The girls will be back in action on Tuesday at the Beatrice Invitational.
