Class C State Tournament @ Quail Run in Columbus (October 13-14, 2014)
The Wahoo Girls Golf team wrapped up their season on Monday and Tuesday, playing in the Class C State Tournament at Quail Run Golf Club in Columbus.
The girls were tested not only by the extreme challenges the greens provided, but also by winds, with gusts above 30 mph.
The girls managed to shoot a team score of 455 on Monday and 457 on Tuesday. On both days the girls’ teams score was good for 13th place out of the 15 teams.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Kristen Tomjack, who was playing in her last event of her career. Tomjack came out on Monday carding a 107 and followed it up with a 108 on Tuesday. Her round Monday was highlighted by nearly hitting a hole in one on the par 3 8th hole. Her tee shot just rolled over the edge to finishing about 5 feet past the hole.
“Kristen was able to avoid trouble over the two days, which led to her posting solid scores. She hit a bunch of fairways and was able to limit the damage on the greens. It was an awesome way for her to end her career,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Following behind Tomjack was Shauna Fiala. Fiala, who was also playing in the final event of her career, posted 111 both days. The highlight of Fiala’s tournament was on Monday, also on the 8th hole. Shauna’s tee shot also just rolled over the edge finishing about a foot from the hole. She made the putt for a birdie on the 117-yard, par 3 hole that was playing back into the stiff wind.
“Shauna did a good job of scrambling while not playing her best golf. On Monday she did a great job on the greens. I know she wanted to play better, but she still did a great job of representing Wahoo High School over the course of her career,” Carlson commented.

Seven shots behind Fiala over the course of the two-day tournament was junior Alexis Vrana. Vrana carded a 115 on Monday and cut a shot off her score on Tuesday to finish with a 114. Vrana had a 55 on her first 9 on Monday and finished her tournament with a 53 on her last 9 on Tuesday.
“Alexis’ golf game was a little bit like a roller coaster over the two days—a great hole followed by a hole where she would get into trouble. She honestly hit the ball better on Monday, but was able to really scramble to save strokes on Tuesday by hitting some great second shots,” said Carlson
On Tuesday the fourth score for the Warriors was junior Emily Colgan. Colgan cut 5 shots off her Monday score to post a 124. Colgan finished her tournament with a 59 on her last nine holes.
“Emily struggled on the first nine each day, shooting a 65 both days. On Tuesday she did a great job of bouncing back to card the 59. The greens caused her a lot of trouble. Both days her putt totals were in the upper 40’s,” said Carlson.
On Monday the fourth score for the Warriors was sophomore Hannah Polacek. Polacek shot her season-best score of 122, and followed it up Tuesday with a 131. Polacek shot 4 nines in the 60’s in her first career state tournament.
“At times Hannah crushed the ball off the tee. The difference between her score Monday and Tuesday was putting,” commented Carlson.
“Overall I was really proud of how the girls battled. The greens were as fast as we have seen all year. When you mix that with the slopes of the greens, there were a lot of places on the green that if you missed the putt it was going to end up 5 feet away, no matter how lightly you hit the putt. When you throw the winds in there, there were times that balls were hit halfway up the green and ended up back at the front of the green. Add in the extra intensity of playing in a state tournament and there were a lot of exhausted girls at the end of the day Tuesday,” Carlson. “The girls put in a lot of hard work during the season and it really paid off. To see the improvement from day one to today was fun to see. We will miss Shauna and Kristen next year, as both girls consistently led the way scoring wise for the team. Both girls also were great leaders and teammates throughout the season.”

2014 Warrior Girls Golf: STATE-BOUND!
Warriors take 3rd @ Districts & prepare for Oct. 13-14 State Tourney in Columbus
District C-1 Tournament @ Oakland Golf Club (October 6, 2014)
The Warriors continued to build on their recent hot streak to finish in 3rd place at the District C-1 Tournament played at Oakland Golf Club!
The 3rd place finish qualified the team for the Class C State Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus. The girls finished with a team score of 455.
Just missing out on placing in the top ten was senior Shauna Fiala. Fiala finished with a 106, which was good for 11th place.
The next lowest finisher for the team was fellow senior Kristen Tomjack with a 114. One shot behind Tomjack was junior Alexis Vrana with a 115. Rounding out the team score was junior Emily Colgan with a 120. Also playing for the Warriors was sophomore Hannah Polacek with a 129.

“I was really proud of how the girls were able to bounce back after some bad holes today. We talked about limiting the big numbers, and when they did get in a bad position, not allowing it to get worse. At times putting was a challenge as the greens were rolling a lot faster than what we have seen this year. They putted true but still the slope on a lot of the greens combined with the speed led to a lot of putts rolling well by the hole today. We had 39 three or four putts today, which is something we can improve on,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “It was definitely a team effort qualifying as a team with no single individual qualifier.”
Elmwood-Murdock Invitational (September 29, 2014)
The Wahoo Girls Golf team wrapped up their regular season on Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational.
The Warriors finished in 3rd place out of 8 teams at the event, held at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course. The girls finished with a team score of 362. Both of the 9-hole team totals (184-178) beat their previous best team score of 191 at the par 30 course.
Kristen Tomjack led the way for the Warriors carding a 89, which was good for 8th place. Following closely behind was Shauna Fiala and Emily Colgan. Both girls carded a 90 and finished in 9th and 11th place respectively, based on a scorecard playoff. Three shots behind was Alexis Vrana, who finished in 14th place. Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors was Hannah Polacek with a 102.
“Having 4 girls in the top 15 for a second straight tournament was awesome! The girls finished in 3rd place after beating their team score from earlier this year by multiple shots on both the front and back nines,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Kristen had a steady day (45-44) to lead the way. Emily also was consistent over both her nines, shooting 45’s on both. Shauna was able to overcome a slow start (48) by coming on strong on the back shooting a 42.”
The team will return to action on Monday at the district tournament played at Oakland Golf Club.

Warriors capture championships @ Arlington Invite & B-T Quad
Omaha Brownell-Talbot Quadrangular (September 26, 2014)
The Warriors Girls Golf team continued their hot play at Oakland Golf Club on Friday.
The girls managed to take home the team championship by 26 shots, finishing with a team score of 435!
Senior Shauna Fiala continued her steady play, finishing as the runner up with a 99 on the challenging course. Fiala’s round was highlighted by 3 birdies.
Following behind Fiala for the second straight meet was junior Alexis Vrana. Vrana finished with a 107 after getting off to a rough start on her first two holes of the day.
Fellow junior Emily Colgan was 5 shots behind Vrana with a 112. Rounding out the team score was senior Kristen Tomjack with a 117. Also playing for the Warriors was sophomore Hannah Polacek, who carded a 136.
“Taking home the team title for the second straight time is a real confidence boost for the girls. The girls’ team score of 435 was a great score on the challenging course. It was good to see the course before we play districts there in ten days. The Oakland Golf Club has some big greens that have a lot of movement. Even though the greens are challenging, the girls really liked playing on them since they were in such great shape,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Shauna had a really good day with her three birdies. It is not often that you have 3 birdies during a round.”
After taking the weekend off, the Warriors will be back in action Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational played at Grandpas Woods Golf Course.
Arlington Invitational (September 22, 2014)
Click HERE to read Fremont-Tribune's coverage of the Arlington Invite.
The Wahoo Girls Golf team continued their great play Monday at the Arlington Invitational.
The Warriors brought home the team championship with a score of 467 on the challenging Fremont Country Club course!
Four different ladies placed for the Warriors. The team was led by Shauna Fiala’s 4th place finish. She shot a 111 with a 54 on the front side.
Following right behind Fiala in 5th place was Alexis Vrana. Vrana finished with a 114 after shooting a 53 on the front.
Also placing in the top ten was Emily Colgan, who finished in 9th place with a 120. Colgan got off to a slow start with a 65, but was able to rebound with a 55 on the back nine.
The fourth Warrior in the top ten was Kristen Tomjack. Tomjack finished in 10th place with a 122.
Also playing was Hannah Polacek who finished with a 145.
“Taking home the team championship is always a huge plus. Not only that but having 4 girls place in the top ten was amazing. I expected the girls to shoot a little higher score today due to the course being a par 75 instead of the standard 72, said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Beyond the higher par the greens are extremely challenging. If you were above the hole there was no way to stop the ball if you missed the putt on a few of the holes. As a result the girls combined to have 37 holes with three or more putts, which leaves a lot of room for improvement. That being said, the girls were able to cut 21 shots off their score from our dual earlier this year.”
The Warriors will return to action on Friday at the O-B-T quadrangular played at Oakland Golf Club.
Crete Invitational (September 19, 2014)
The Lady Warrior golfers hit the course on Friday at the Crete Invitational. The tournament was played at College Heights.
The girls had a great day finishing in 5th place out of 13 teams. Their team score of 429 was Wahoo’s best score at the Crete Invitational over the last 8 years, by 15 shots.
Senior Shauna Fiala continued her solid play finishing with a 97. Fiala had both her nine-hole scores in the 40’s (48-49). Fiala’s 97 was good for 8th place.
Senior Kristen Tomjack was next for the Warriors with a 109 (53-56). Two shots back of Tomjack was junior Alexis Vrana. Vrana fired a 50 on the back nine to finish with a 111. One shot behind Vrana was fellow junior Emily Colgan. Colgan had back-to-back 56’s to finish with a 112. Rounding out the team was sophomore Hannah Polacek, who carded a 128.
“The girls played really well today. For the most part the girls handled the challenging greens of College Heights. Shauna had a great day with both of her nine hole scores in the 40’s. Kristen continued her steady play with two scores in the 50’s. This year all of her nine-hole scores have been in the 50’s. Alexis really got her game to come together on the back nine with her 50. It was nice to see her have things click swing-wise after working hard to fix some problems. Emily putted really well today recording only 37 putts. Hannah had a good first 9 before finding some trouble on the back,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
The Warriors will return to action on Monday at the Arlington Invitational, played at Fremont Golf Club.
Blair Invitational (September 15, 2014)
The Warriors returned to action Monday at the Blair Invitational played at River Wilds Golf Club.
The girls were greeted by chilly temps and breezy conditions at the start of their round. With a team score of 462, the Warriors finished 8th out of 11 teams.
Leading the way once again for the Warriors was Shauna Fiala. Fiala carded a 102, which was good for 11th place. Her score actually tied for 9th place, but due to a scorecard playoff she ended up in 11th. Fiala shot a front 9 score of 48 with 3 pars.
Kristen Tomjack was the second leading scorer for the Warriors, carding a 111. Tomjack shot a front 9 score of 52 with 3 pars. Following behind Tomjack was Alexis Vrana with a 118. Also golfing for the Warriors was Hannah Polacek with a 131.
“Coming off the weekend I thought that the girls hit the ball fairly well. If the girls could limit a couple of bad swings each nine they could really lower their scores. They are improving on and around the greens, but just need to get more consistent. Shauna had a nice day finishing tied for 9th. Kristen was in great position to medal but had some trouble with sand on the back,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
The Warriors will return to action on Friday at the Crete Invitational played at College Heights Golf Club.
Plattsmouth Invitational (September 11, 2014)
The Wahoo Girls Golf Team got back into action on Thursday, Sept. 11 at the Plattsmouth Invitational played at Bay Hills Golf Club. The girls had to battle soggy conditions and unusually cool temperatures throughout their round.
Despite the challenging conditions, the Warriors were able to finish with a team score of 478. Their score was good for a 5th place finish out of 14 teams.
Seniors Shauna Fiala and Kristen Tomjack led the way. Fiala finished with a 111, which just missed placing by a shot. Tomjack was 3 shots back with a 114.
Hannah Polacek had a great day on the links finishing with a 124. Emily Colgan rounded out the team scoring with a 129.
“Finishing in 5th place out of 14 teams was awesome!” commented Head Coach Curtis Carlson. “I was really pleased with how the girls hit the ball. Putting was a bit of an adventure at times due to steep, sloping greens and some tricky pin placements. Shauna and Kristen both continued their solid play. Hannah really hit the ball well off the tee and that put her in some good positions to score. Emily finished with a 129, but her first nine was a 59. Unfortunately she found some trouble on the back.”
The girls will be back in action on Monday at the Blair Invitational played at River Wilds Golf Club.
Plattsmouth Dual (September 8, 2014)
After taking the weekend off the girls hit the links in a home dual with Plattsmouth on Sept. 8.
The dual took place at Hilltop Country Club. Plattsmouth defeated the Warriors by a score of 216 to 232. Plattsmouth was led by Swedish foreign exchange student Sara Larssen’s 40 to take home the medalist honors by 11 shots.
Leading the way for Wahoo was Shauna Fiala. Fiala finished the day with a 51. Kristen Tomjack carded a 59 and Alexis Vrana (60) and Emily Colgan (62) were right behind her. Hannah Polacek added a 74.
“Shauna stepped up her game and shot one of her lowest rounds ever at Hilltop Country Club. Her swing has been getting more consistent and it is really helping,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Fremont JV Dual (September 5, 2014
The Warriors were right back in action on Friday, Sept. 5, participating in a dual with Fremont JV. The girls were able to sneak out a 2-shot victory in the dual played at Fremont Country Club.
Seniors Shauna Fiala and Kristen Tomjack led the way for the Warriors, each recording a 57. Alexis Vrana (70) and Hannah Polacek (72) rounded out the team scoring.
“The girls struggled being back in action for the second day in a row. Their focus wasn’t the best today and at times it showed. Fremont Country Club always challenges the girls with their greens and how tight the course is in places,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular (September 4, 2014)
After being rained out of the Seward Invitational, the Wahoo Girls Golf team started a busy stretch by winning the Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular by 33 shots!
The girls finished with a team score of 191. This was the Warriors’ best team score recorded on the course over the last seven years! It was also only the second time a team had a score under 200 at Grandpa’s Woods over that stretch.
Taking home one of the medalist honors was junior Emily Colgan. Colgan carded a 46, which edged out teammate Shauna Fiala on the scorecard playoff. Colgan’s round was highlighted by having only 16 putts during her round.
Fiala also recorded a 46. Her round was highlighted by a birdie on the par 3, 9th hole. Fiala was able to overcome a pair of 8’s during her round.
Sophomore Hannah Polacek had a great day as well, shooting a 49. Polacek’s 49 included 27 putts. Kristen Tomjack rounded out the team score with a 50. Alexis Vrana added a 57 for the Warriors.
“Grandpa’s Woods is a tricky course. The course is not very long, but it is very tight and the greens are extremely small. For the girls to come out and have four girls score 50 or better was awesome! The exciting part for me is the fact that everyone can still cut a lot of shots off their scores. Emily and Shauna both played well, but left shots out on the course with some silly mistakes. If Hannah two-putts every hole, she could have very easily shot a score in the 30’s, which would be an amazing number for someone who hasn’t played a lot of golf,” commented Coach Curtis Carlson.
The Warriors return to action Friday in a dual with Fremont JV’s at Fremont Country Club, and then again Monday with a home dual against Plattsmouth at Hilltop Country Club.
Beatrice Invitational (August 26, 2014)
The Warriors returned to action Tuesday by bringing home a couple medals at the Beatrice Invitational.
The girls had near-perfect conditions with temperatures in the upper 70’s.
Leading the way was senior Kristen Tomjack. Tomjack finished in 12th place with a 106. This was a 33-shot improvement over her score the previous year!
Also medaling for the Warriors was senior Shauna Fiala. Fiala finished in 14th place with a 107. Her score was 4 shots better than the previous year. when she finished in 10th place.
Juniors Emily Colgan and Alexis Vrana, along with sophomore Hannah Polacek, also competed for the Warriors. The three had scores of 126, 131, and 149.
“The girls were challenged by the quick greens at Beatrice Country Club. The course is one of our toughest tests each year, so it was really good to see both Kristen and Shauna medal,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Things are starting to click for Kristen off the tee, and it is making a huge difference in her scores. Shauna was able to place for a second year in a row, which is always a positive. All the girls have a lot of room for improvement on the greens, which can cut several shots off their scores.”
The Warriors will return to action Friday at the Seward Invitational.
Schuyler Dual (Season Opener, August 25, 2014)
The Wahoo Girls Golf team kicked off their season on Monday with a dual against Schuyler. The competition was played at Hilltop Country Club.
Seniors Kristen Tomjack and Shauna Fiala tied for the medalist honors with a 58. Tomjack took home the honor by winning the scorecard playoff.
Juniors Emily Colgan and sophomore Hannah Polacek each carded a 64. Junior Alexis Vrana added a 65 for the Warriors.
“Both Kristen and Shauna had good days today. That being said, both girls would tell you that they could have easily cut several shots off their scores,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “With all the recent rains the rough proved to be a major challenge for the girls.”
