Class C State Tournament (October 8-9 @ Quail Run Golf Course [Columbus])

The Wahoo Girls Golf team capped off their season by playing in the two-day State Tournament in Columbus on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 8-9. The Warriors battled windy conditions both days while playing on the challenging course.

Sophomore Carlea Gall led the way shooting a 105 on day 1 and a 111 on day 2. Gall fired a 50 on the back 9 on the first day.

Fellow sophomore Shauna Fiala was next shooting a 116 on day 1 and a 117 on day 2. Fiala came out shooting well, carding a 56 on the first 9 holes of the tournament.

Sophomore Emily Pestal finished her first State Tournament with a 126 on day 2. Her score was 7 shots lower than her day 1 total. Pestal had a 58 on her last nine holes of the tournament.

Sophomore Kristen Tomjack, also playing in her first State Tournament, had a 133 on day 1 and followed it up by shooting a couple shots higher on day 2. Tomjack also finished with her best 9-hole score of the tournament with a 63 on her last nine holes.

Freshman Alexis Vrana rounded out the scoring for the team with a 139 on day 2. This was a 2-shot improvement over her day 1 score. Vrana started day 1 on a good note shooting a 63 on the first nine.

“The girls were able to shoot close to their averages for the season, so I was really pleased with that. It was a great experience for the girls. Being such a young team (9 total years of golfing experience between the 5 girls), it was awesome to be able to play at state. It was a lot of fun seeing the improvements that each girl made from the start of the season. The girls’ work ethic allowed them to have a successful season. I would like to thank everyone for their support,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

2012 Girls Golf State-Bound!
Warriors Take 3rd at Districts; Qualify for Oct. 8-9 State Tournament

C-2 District Tournament (October 2, 2012 @ Oakland Golf Club)

The Wahoo Girls Golf team will make a return trip to State after qualifying at the District C-2 Tournament yesterday at Oakland Golf Club.

The Warriors shot a team score of 476, which was good for third place, behind Omaha Brownell-Talbot and Lincoln Lutheran. The girls had to deal with one of the toughest courses they have played all year. The greens were large and very fast.

The Warriors were lead by sophomore Carlea Gall. Gall fired a 109, which was good for 11th place. Gall fired a 52 on the front nine, before finding trouble on the back nine. Even though Gall had a 13 and a 9 on the par 5’s, she still was able to shoot a 57.

“Carlea played really well today. If she could have avoided the penalty shots on the two holes on the back, she would have been in contention for a top five finish. That being said, after both holes she did a great job of bouncing back,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

Fellow sophomores Shauna Fiala, Emily Pestal, and Kristen Tomjack rounded out the team scoring for the Warriors. Fiala carded a 117, while Pestal and Tomjack added a 122 and a 128. Freshman Alexis Vrana shot a 142 for the Warriors.

“All the girls played well today. This was the first time that Emily, Kristen, and Alexis had played in a district competition. That tends to make the scores really jump up. The team qualifying was great. For a team to lose its top two players from the year before and still qualify really says something about the work ethic of the girls,” Carlson commented.

The State Tournament will be played on Monday, October 8 and Tuesday, October 9 at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.

Elmwood-Murdock Invitational (September 24, 2012)

The Wahoo Girls Golf team returned to the links on Monday taking part in the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational. The invite was played at Grandpa’s Woods golf course. The Warriors had already played there once this year and were able to use that to their advantage.

Sophomore Kristen Tomjack led the way with a 103. Tomjack cut about six shots off her earlier score on each of the nines.

Fellow sophomore Emily Pestal added a 107. Pestal had a 58 on the first nine but came back really strong with a 49 on the back nine. Freshmen Emily Colgan and Ana Boesiger both finished their back nines strong shooting 53 and 56. Colgan finished the day with a 117, while Boesiger ended her day with a 121.

“I was really pleased with how the girls played today. We had been working on some swing changes with both Kristen Tomjack and Emily Pestal. Both girls came out and played really well for focusing on working on those changes. Ana Boesiger and Emily Colgan gained some valuable experience while bouncing back to shoot career best scores on their back nines,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will return to action in a quadrangular hosted by OBT at Oakland Golf Club on Thursday.

Arlington Invitational (September 18, 2012)

The Warrior Girls Golf team hit the links on Tuesday playing at the Arlington Invitational at the Fremont Golf Club. The Warriors were led by sophomore Shauna Fiala’s 99, which was good for the medalist honor.

Fellow sophomore Carlea Gall carded a 111, which was good for 7th place. Freshman Alexis Vrana picked up her first medal of her career shooting a 120. Her score put her in a three-way tie for 12th place, but she finished in 14th place due to the tiebreaker. Sophomore Kristen Tomjack rounded out the team scoring with a 134.

As a team the Warriors finished in 3rd place with a team score of 464.

“I was very pleased with how the girls played. We put a focus on putting for today and all the girls made a major improvement over their last few times. Shauna had a great day taking home the medalist honors. It was also great to have Alexis get her first medal in her first year of playing golf,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The ladies will return to action on Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational.

Crete Invitational (September 14, 2012)

The Wahoo Girls Golf team finished off their busy week on Friday at the Crete Invitational. The Invite was played at College Heights Golf Club. The ladies enjoyed near perfect conditions while taking on the challenging course.

The Warriors were led by Shauna Fiala. Fiala carded back-to-back 50’s, which was good for 15th place.

Carlea Gall was close behind shooting back-to-back 53’s on the 9-hole course. Kristen Tomjack, Emily Pestal, and Emily Colgan rounded out the scoring for the Warriors with scores of 134, 142, and 152.

“The girls were really challenged today by the greens. They continue to cut multiple shots off their scores from last year,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Hopefully we can continue to build on the positives on Tuesday at the Arlington Invitational played at Fremont Country Club.”

Plattsmouth Dual (September 13, 2012)

On Thursday the Warriors took to the course for a dual with Plattsmouth. The action took place at Hilltop Country Club.

Shauna Fiala fired a 53 to take home the medalist honors by 5 shots. Carlea Gall added a 61 and freshman Alexis Vrana added a 66. Kristen Tomjack and Ana Boesiger both carded 67’s for the Warriors.

“We had three PR’s, which was great to see. Shauna had a good day, but could still very easily cut some shots off her scores,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

Blair Invitational (September 10, 2012)

The Warrior Girls Golf team kicked off a busy week at the Blair Invitational.

The girls had a team score of 463, which was good for fifth place.

Individually the Warriors were led by Carlea Gall. Gall fired a 102, which was good for 13th place. Shauna Fiala was 11 shots back with a 113. Freshman Alexis Vrana carded her best round of her career with a 123. Kristen Tomjack cut seven shots off her score last year shooting a 125. Emily Pestal carded a 140 for the Warriors.

“Once again I was very pleased with how the girls played this year. The girls cut off several shots from their scores last year,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The girls will return to action Thursday with a dual against Plattsmouth, played at Hilltop Country Club.

Plattsmouth Invitational (September 6, 2012)

The Wahoo Girls Golf team hit the links Thursday at the Plattsmouth Invitational. The tournament was played at Bay Hill Golf Club, which is always challenging. The Warriors finished in fifth place with a team score of 468.

Sophomore Carlea Gall led the way shooting a 105. Her score was good for 11th place. Fellow sophomore Shauna Fiala was two shots behind finishing in 14th place. Sophomore Kristen Tomjack, freshman Alexis Vrana, and freshman Emily Colgan rounded out the team scoring with a 121, 135, and 150.

“The course always presents lots of challenges with its greens and tight layout in places. The girls handled the course really well. It is always great to have two girls place in a 13-team field,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

Elmwood-Murdock Invitational (August 30, 2012)

The Warrior Girls Golf team continued their hot play at the Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular, played at Grandpa’s Woods golf course.

The girls battled temperatures in the high 90’s along with windy conditions. In the end, Shauna Fiala took home the medalist honor by firing a 46 on the par 30 course.

Also breaking 50 was Carlea Gall, who carded a 49. Sophomores Kristen Tomjack, 57, and Emily Pestal, 62, rounded out the team score of 214, which was good for a one-shot victory over Elmwood-Murdock. Freshman Alexis Vrana and Emily Colgan also recorded solid numbers. Vrana fired a 57 and Colgan carded a 60.
“The girls had a good day on the links. I was impressed with how Alexis and Emily played in their first full event of their careers. Even though it is short it still is a very challenging course. The greens are very small and have a lot of movement on them,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Wahoo Girls Golf team will be off until Thursday when they play in the Plattsmouth Invitational at Bay Hills Golf Course.

Seward Invitational (August 24, 2012)

The Wahoo High School Girls Golf team returned to action on Friday at the Seward Invitational.

As a team the Warriors shot a 442. Sophomore Carlea Gall led the way with a 96, which was good for 10th place. Her round consisted of a 49, followed up by a 47. Gall had 6 pars during her round.

Shauna Fiala continued her solid play carding a 108. Her round was highlighted by a par on the par 3 5th hole. Kristen Tomjack and Emily Pestal rounded out the team scoring shooting 118 and 120 respectively.

“Once again I was very pleased with how the girls played. We are a very young team, playing four sophomores, and this was our second best score at Seward over the last five years. The girls had to battle windy conditions along with a couple showers during their round, which is always challenging,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will return to action on Monday, taking part in a JV dual with Fremont.

Beatrice Invitational (August 20, 2012)

The Lady Warriors returned to action on Tuesday at the Beatrice Invitational.

The girls had a near perfect day with temperatures in the low 90’s with only a light breeze.

The team was led by sophomore Shauna Fiala. Fiala fired a career-best front nine of 49 and followed it up with a 55. Her 104 was good for 13th place.

Fellow sophomore Carlea Gall fired a 115 and Emily Pestal carded a 124. Kristen Tomjack rounded out the team scoring with a 134, which was highlighted by a par on the par 3 5th hole. The Warrior team score of 477 was good for 5th place.

“The girls had to face a very big challenge playing Beatrice Country Club for the first Invite of the year. The greens were very quick and that gave the girls some trouble early on. Even though none of the girls had played the course before, I thought they all did a great job of taking on the challenges that it presents. The results were definitely something that we can build on going forward in our season,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will return to action Friday at the Seward Invitational.

Schuyler Central Duel (August 16, 2012)

The Warrior Girls Golf team kicked off the season with a duel against Schuyler Central High School on Thursday, August 16.

The Wahoo Warriors won the duel by a score of 249 to 256. Taking the Medalist honors was sophomore Carlea Gall. Gall’s 55 was good for a two-shot victory over fellow sophomore Shauna Fiala. Fiala finished with a 57 on the day.

Sophomores Emily Pestal and Kristen Tomjack rounded out the team scoring shooting 67 and 70.

“For the first time out this year I was happy with how the girls played,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “All the girls hit some really good shots. We need to continue to work on being consistent with our swing paths and improving on putting. Overall, for our first competition of the year and it being the first full day of school for the girls, I was pleased with the results.”
