RESULTS
Blair Invitational - September 11, 2023
The Warriors wrapped up a busy seven-day stretch by participating in the Blair Invite at River Wilds Golf Club. The team enjoyed nearly perfect conditions for their round.
"River Wilds is a challenging course with water on 8 holes and greens that have multiple tiers. Holes 16, 17, and 18 are particularly challenging. Those were the first three holes the girls played, which made it difficult to establish a good flow early," said Carlson.
Senior Teagan Watts led the way for the Warriors with a score of 125. Watts bogeyed three holes during her round. "Teagan hit some really good drives off the tee today. She also mixed in some outstanding iron shots. Our area of focus going forward is to continue building consistency with her wedges from 100 yards and in," said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Four shots behind Watts was Erika Maldonado. Maldonado was able to overcome some mid-round swing issues to par the challenging par 5 sixth hole. "During the middle of the round, Erika had a couple of holes where her swing just wasn't there. I was impressed with how she was able to turn it around and bounce back," said Coach Carlson.
Olivia Schneider also represented the Warriors. In her first 18-hole event, Schneider carded a score of 143.
After a week off, the Warriors will return to River Wilds Golf Club next Tuesday for the Arlington Invitational.
Plattsmouth Invitational - September 7th, 2023
After a day of practice, the Warriors returned to Bay Hills on Thursday for the Plattsmouth Invitational. The severe slopes of both the fairways and greens presented a significant challenge for the entire field.
Erika Maldonado led the way for the Warriors with a score of 131. Her round was highlighted by an impressive par on the 18th hole, a par 4. After having to take a penalty shot, Maldonado put her third shot on the green and then sank a 20-foot putt for a par. "Erika had moments today where she hit her irons really well. When she becomes a little more consistent off the tee box and around the green, her score will really drop," said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Five shots behind Maldonado was Lexi Jonas, who shot a pair of 68s during her round.
Teagan Watts was three shots behind Jonas. Watts almost chipped in for par on the 9th hole, a par 3, on her way to a score of 67 on the front nine.
"Today was the first time playing 18 holes for both Lexi and Teagan," said Carlson. "All three girls hit some really outstanding shots but need to be more consistent. A significant focus for the next couple of weeks in practice will be chipping and putting."
The girls will return to action on Monday at the Blair Invitational, which will be played at River Wilds Golf Course.
Plattsmouth Triangular - September 5th, 2023
On Tuesday, the Warriors hit the links at Bay Hills Golf Club in Plattsmouth. The team participated in a triangular with Blair and Plattsmouth.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Senior Teagan Watts with a score of 60. Her round was highlighted by a bogey on the 18th hole, a par 4. Watts capitalized on a good tee shot, positioning herself about 75 yards from the pin. Teagan hit her sand wedge to about 25 feet from the pin. From there, Watts three-putted for a bogey.
Four shots behind Watts was Alexis Jonas. The strength of Jonas' round was her play off the tee.
Just 2 shots back of Jonas was Erika Maldonado. Maldonado had several good opportunities but wasn't able to capitalize around the greens.
Rounding out the team score for the Warriors was Olivia Schneider with a score of 72.
The team finished with a total score of 262, which was good for third place.
"There were a lot of positives today. The girls played the tougher nine but still came away feeling good about their rounds. I look forward to seeing how many shots off their scores they can cut on Thursday," said Coach Carlson.
The Warriors will return to Bay Hills on Thursday for the Plattsmouth Invitational.
Fremont Bergan Quadrangular - August 28, 2023
On Monday, the Warriors returned to the links at Fremont Golf Club. After battling extreme heat last week, the girls enjoyed a day when the highs were only in the upper 80s. While the weather was great, the team was challenged by the speed of the greens.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Junior Erika Maldonado with a score of 67. "Erika really hit the ball well off the tee. Around the greens was a bit of a struggle. The interesting part is that Erika could easily cut at least 10, if not 15, shots off her score just around the greens. I am excited to see the scores she will shoot once she addresses this," commented Coach Carlson.
Seven shots behind her was Senior Teagan Watts. "Today was a new experience for Teagan. This was her first time playing on a different course in competition. She still managed to hit some really good shots but had a couple of moments where she struggled to adjust to the different conditions around the greens," said Carlson.
Just behind Watts were Sophomore Alexis Jonas (77) and Junior Olivia Schneider (80). The highlight of Lexi’s round was her tee shots, as she had one of her best days off the tee ever. Olivia’s round was capped off with a double bogey on the par 3 4th hole.
As a team, the Warriors finished fourth with a total team score of 298.
“Fremont is a great course that really challenges you to place your ball in the right spot. You can miss a putt by a couple of inches that will end up 5+ feet away. The girls hadn’t encountered conditions like this, and almost all of them said the same thing - we hit the ball pretty well, but around the greens was tough,” said Coach Carlson.
The Warriors will hit the links twice next week. On Tuesday, they will play in a triangular with Plattsmouth and Blair. On Thursday, they will participate in the Plattsmouth Invitational. Both events will take place at Bay Hills Golf Club.
Schuyler Dual - August 21, 2023
The Wahoo Girls Golf Team kicked off their season on Monday morning with a dual vs. Schuyler. While playing on their home course, the Warriors had to battle fog and steamy conditions. “With heat index well over 100, the girls had to battle extreme conditions,” said Coach Carlson
The Warriors were able to overcome the challenging conditions to win the dual by 26 shots (281-307).
Leading the way for the Warriors was Senior Teagan Watts with a 61. Watts in her first year playing golf was able to get off to a good start highlighted by bogeying holes 3 and 4 at Hilltop Country Club.
Five shots behind Watts was Sophomore Alexis Jonas. Jonas’ 66 was a career-best round.
“Facing extreme heat and humidity, I was really pleased with how the girls persevered through their rounds. It was brutal on the course and the girls kept battling. I was really pleased with how Teagan and Alexis played. Both shot career-best rounds,” said Coach Carlson.
The Warriors will return to action on Tuesday, August 29th in a quadrangular at Fremont Golf Club starting at 2:30.
