RESULTS:
Class C State Girls Golf Tournament (Oct. 8-9 @ River's Edge Golf Course in North Platte)
Steady rains and high temps in the 40's added some challenges to the 2018 State Girls Golf Championship, which was cut short on Day 2 due to weather conditions.
WHS senior Shelby Griego finished the season for the Warriors at the Class C State Championship at River’s Edge Golf Course in North Platte.
Griego shot a 100 on Monday to finish the weather-shortened tournament in 22nd place out of 92 golfers.
On day one Shelby shot back-to-back 50’s. The impressive part was that she played most of her round in steady rain that made the course a mess. Making things worse was that the high temperature was only 43 degrees.
Shelby was very consistent on the front nine, finishing with 4 bogeys and 5 double bogeys. She followed that up on the back with a par, 3 bogeys, 3 double bogeys, and a couple triple bogeys.
“Shelby was very steady on the front nine when the weather was at its worst. There were multiple holes during the first half of her round that had standing water on them. On the back nine she found a little bit of trouble on a couple holes that caused some bigger numbers,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
On day two Griego got in 10 holes before they cancelled the final day due to the weather (steady rain and a “feels-like” temperature of 30). Unfortunately Griego would have moved up several spots after shooting a 49 on the front nine, while many others were struggling with the conditions.
Griego got her second day off to a great start with a par on the first hole. After bogeying the second hole she rattled off four straight double bogeys before coming to the very challenging par-3 7th hole. Shelby hit a great tee shot to the back of the green that was surrounded by challenging bunkers. She managed to sink her downhill putt from almost 40 feet for a birdie. After a double on the next hole, she found some trouble to finish her front nine with a triple bogey.
“Shelby did an awesome job handling miserable conditions,” Carlson commented. “Her birdie on 7 was definitely the highlight of the tournament.”
“It has been really fun watching Shelby go from a freshman who would have shot 180 in a tournament, to finishing her career as a two-time state qualifier. It really goes to show what can happen when someone puts in the time and is dedicated to a cause,” Carlson added.

Shelby Griego: 2018 State Girls Golf Qualifier!
Griego cards 101 at C-2 District Meet, takes 3rd place
C-2 District Tournament (October 1, 2018 @ West Point/Beemer)
On Monday the Wahoo Girls Golf team kicked off the postseason participating in the C-2 District Tournament at Indian Trails Golf Course in Beemer.
The girls battled cool, damp conditions throughout the day while taking on the very challenging course.
Senior Shelby Griego led the way again for the Warriors. Griego finished in 3rd place with a 101. She was able to take advantage of a par and a couple bogeys to shoot a 53 on the front side. That put her in a great position to qualify for State heading onto the back nine, which is the more challenging nine.
After a double bogey on the 10th hole, Griego responded with four straight bogeys. She then had a 4-putt double bogey on the par 3 15th hole. Following that disappointing hole, she bounced back on the 100-yard par 3 hole. Shelby hit a beautiful tee shot that looked like it had a chance to go in the hole, and ended up just over a foot short of the pin. After tapping in for an easy birdie, she was able to finish with a pair of double bogeys for a second nine score of 48.
“Indian Trails is a long course and Shelby was able to get her 3 wood going today, which really helped her,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “She was consistently in or right next to the fairway, which helped keep her out of trouble. The key for her today was being able to either bogey or double bogey every par 5 on the course.”
Following Griego was Senior Gabi Girmus. Girmus finished in 17th place with a 116, which was 6 shots from qualifying for State. She was able to bounce back from a rough start to finish her first nine (the back nine) with a 62, thanks to a par and a bogey. Gabi bounced back on the front shooting a season-best nine hole score of 54. The key for her was the first five holes. Girmus was able to double the par 5’s and played the two par 3’s in 1 over.
“I was very impressed that Gabi was able to shoot a 54 during districts on a challenging course in just her second year playing golf. If she could have gotten off to a little better start, she would have been in a great position to qualify for State,” stated Carlson.
Darian Stang rounded out the scoring for the Warriors with a 142. Stang started on the back nine and got off to a good start with a couple bogeys to shoot a 67. The highlight of the day for Darian was chipping in from almost 60 yards out on the 11th hole. Stang followed her 67 with a 75 on the front.
“For being a first-year golfer, Darian did a great job today. Her second nine didn’t go as well as the first, but she still did some really good things out there,” Carlson commented.
Griego will participate in the Class C State Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, October 8-9, in North Platte at River’s Edge Golf Course.

Griego takes 5th, Stang 15th (career-high score!) @ Elmwood-Murdock Tourney
Elmwood-Murdock Tournament (September 24, 2018)

With the season in the homestretch, the Warrior golfers were back in action Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational. Playing in the last invitational of the season before Districts, the Warriors had a beautiful day to play golf.
Leading the way was senior Shelby Griego. Griego was able to finish in 5th place with an 87.
“Shelby had a good day hitting the ball and was able to finish with ten bogeys during her round. Her short game was the key to her score today,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Finishing in 15th place was Darian Stang. Stang had the best round of her career to finish with a 106, taking advantage of a par on the challenging 9th hole and a bogey on the 4th hole.
“The course really fit Darian’s game,” Carlson said. “She doesn’t hit the ball a long way, but she has become pretty consistent with her irons and around the greens. It is great to see a first year golfer play as well as she did today.”
One shot and one place behind Stang was Gabi Girmus. Gabi had her low round of the season, shooting a 107. The highlight of her round was a bogey on hole 4.
“Gabi hit some good shots today, but on the greens she found some trouble. She was able to cut six shots off her score from last year,” Carlson stated.
The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday at Fremont. With Districts a few days away, the format will be a scramble, and teams will be made up of a combination of girls from the three schools (Wahoo, Arlington and Platteview). It will be a great chance for the girls to get some work in while playing in a relaxed/fun format.
On Monday the girls will play in the District C-1 tournament at Indian Trails Golf Course in Beemer.

Griego leads Warriors with 13th place finish @ Arlington Invite
Arlington Invitational (September 18, 2018)
The Wahoo Girls Golf Team took on the challenging Fremont Golf Club on Tuesday while playing in the Arlington Invitational.
After getting off to a warm, muggy start, the weather completely changed to cool and windy about an hour into the round. Luckily the girls were able to just get their rounds in before stormy weather hit.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Shelby Griego. Griego finished in 13th place with a 124. Griego’s round was highlighted by a par on the very challenging ninth hole.
Ten shots back was Gabi Girmus with a 134. The highlight for Girmus was a bogey on the par-3 second hole.
Darian Stang finished her round (145) on a high note, getting a par on the par-3 tenth hole. Stang also had a bogey on the par-3 second hole.
“The scores were not great today, but a lot of that has to do with playing a long, challenging course. The girls hit a lot of really good approach shots; however, the challenging greens caused some 3 and 4 putts,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
The girls will be back in action Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational, played at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course.

Warriors host Blair & Plattsmouth for home triangular
Wahoo Triangular (September 11, 2018)
The Warriors were right back on the course Tuesday, hosting a triangular with Blair and Plattsmouth. The girls battled breezy conditions while playing Hilltop Country Club.
Darian Stang got off to a great start, bogeying her first two holes of the day. Stang found some trouble later in her round to finish with a 65.
Gabi Girmus was able to take advantage of bogeying both par three’s to finish with a 59.
Shelby Griego finished with a 55 while working on some swing changes.
“It was really good to see Darian get off to a great start,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “For a first-year golfer to bogey her first two holes was impressive. She had some rough holes later on, but that goes with being a first-year golfer. Gabi hit some really good shots as well. With the exception of one hole, she played the par three’s and four’s really well. Shelby was working through some recent swing changes today that will hopefully pay off down the road.”

Girls enjoy a beautiful day @ Blair Invite
Blair Invitational (September 10, 2018)
On Monday the girls took part in the Blair Invitational. The girls had a beautiful day to play at River Wilds Golf Course.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Shelby Griego with a 113. Nine shots behind Griego was Gabi Girmus with a 122. Darian Stang shot a 134 while seeing the course for the first time.
“Today we had some moments where we played some great golf. Unfortunately we had some moments where we didn’t as well,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “The greens at River Wilds can cause some issues and they presented challenges to the girls today.”

Griego takes runner up @ Plattsmouth Tourney!
Plattsmouth Tourney (September 6, 2018)
Warrior Girls Golfers (from left) Darian Stang, Shelby Griego and Gabi Girmus played a soggy Plattsmouth Tourney on Sept. 6. Griego carded a 100, and took runner-up for the day!
After nine days without a competition, the girls were at Bay Hills Golf Course on Thursday taking part in the Plattsmouth Invitational.
After a rainy stretch of days, the girls had to battle wet conditions along with constant elevation changes that Bay Hills presents.
Shelby Griego led the way with a runner-up finish, despite not playing her best golf. Griego cut 9 shots off her score from last year to finish with a 100.
“It is always good that you can have an off day and still finish as the runner-up in an invite that has some really good teams,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Bay Hills has a tendency to cause golfers to not play their best, and the leader board showed that today. The biggest challenge is that you almost never have a flat lie, which makes it much more difficult.”
Gabi Girmus cut 3 shots off her score from last year to finish with a 132.
Darian Stang was 6 shots behind Girmus with a 138.
The Warriors will get the weekend off before returning to action on Monday at the Blair Invitational, played at River Wilds Golf Course. On Tuesday they will host a triangular at Hilltop Country Club with Blair and Plattsmouth starting at 4:00 p.m.

Griego medals at rigorous Fremont Quadrangular!
Fremont Quadrangular (August 27, 2018)
On Monday the Warrior golfers took on the challenging Fremont Golf Club during a quadrangular with Fremont Bergan, Arlington, and Fremont JV.
The girls faced the quickest greens they have seen this year, and lots of trouble during their round while playing the par 37 front side.
Taking home the medalist honors was Shelby Griego with a 45. Her 8 over par score was 9 shots better then the next best score. Griego’s round was highlighted by a tap-in birdie from a foot on the par 3, 4th hole. Her tee shot just missed being a hole in one by a little bit.
“Shelby bounced back from a rough first hole to play the next four holes in even par,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “She has been hitting her irons really well, which has helped her scores. If she can improve her play with her driver, her game could really take off.”
Finishing with the 5th best score during the quadrangular was Gabi Girmus. Girmus’ 61 was highlighted by bogeying a pair of par 4 holes.
“Gabi hit some really good shots with her irons. She made solid contact off the tee, but just needs to straighten out her tee shots,” Carlson commented.
Also playing for the Warriors was Darian Stang. Stang, playing in her first year, finished with a 76.
“Darian hit some really good shots at times today. She had a really nice bogey on the 5th hole. Today was a bit of an adventure on the greens and tee boxes, but that can happen easily on such a challenging course,” added Carlson.
The girls will have the rest of the week to practice and prepare for a triangular against Blair and Plattsmouth that will be played at Hilltop Country Club on Tuesday.

Griego takes runner up @ Seward Invite!
Seward Invite (August 24, 2018)
After a couple days of practice, the girls were back in action Friday at the Seward Invitational.
The girls had to battle warm, muggy conditions most of the day after storms moved through just two holes into the tournament. After a 30-minute lightning delay, the girls were able to resume play.
Once again leading the way for the Warriors was Senior Shelby Griego. Griego fired a career-best round of 81 on the par 74 course. During her round Shelby had 10 pars and a birdie.
“Shelby hit some really good iron shots today that allowed her to be in great positions to score,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Playing her last five holes in even par really helped her score.”
Griego’s round of 81 puts her in a tie for 3rd place on the school record board.
Gabi Girmus continued to improve from last year by cutting 17 shots off her score from last year to finish with a 113. Her round was highlighted by a par on the par five first hole.
Darian Stang made her golf debut shooting a 132. Stang even had a par during her round, which is impressive for a first year golfer.
“It was a really good day. The girls all hit some really good shots during their rounds. As is the case almost always in golf, they all had at least a couple shots that they would like to redo. Towards the end of the day the girls did get a little tired due to the warm, muggy conditions,” commented Carlson. “Overall it was a very good opening week for the girls. They just need to continue to work hard and get better each time out on the course.”
The girls will take the weekend off and get right back to action Monday playing in a quadrangular at Fremont Golf Club.

Griego takes 7th place @ Beatrice Invite; Girmus finishes 14th
Beatrice Invitational (August 21, 2018)
On Tuesday the Warriors played in perfect conditions at the season-opening Beatrice Invitational. Even though the weather was amazing, the girls still had to take on a very challenging Beatrice Country Club.
Senior Shelby Griego led the way with a 100, which was good for 7th place.
“Shelby had a good day on the greens, which really helped her score. If she could have avoided a couple bunkers that were soggy, she could have easily cut another 4-5 shots off her score,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Senior Gabi Girmus finished just out of medaling in 14th place. Girmus finished with a 114, which cut 37 shots off her score from last year.
“Gabi was very consistent today," Carlson commented. "She had a bunch of double bogeys and was able to avoid trouble, except for a couple holes. Her game has really come a long way since last year.”
The girls will be back in action Friday at the Seward Invitational.
