Saunders Co. resident Dwight Hanson recently spoke with 3rd graders about his volunteer work with Engineers without Borders.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit Africa?

The third grade students of Wahoo Elementary got a taste of the African culture on Monday, Feb. 1, when Dwight Hanson visited their classes to share his experiences in Uganda.

Hanson is a Saunders County resident who shares his expertise on water systems with the international organization Engineers without Borders USA.

The volunteers of Engineers without Borders USA visit various places that lack proficiency in developing systems that are common in their home regions. They help the local population build facilities that will help them attain better living conditions. Dwight has visited several places and has become a friend to a people of Uganda.

Hanson shared several stories and pictures with the students to help them understand a culture quite different from their own. The school that Hanson has been working with wants to hear stories about life in America, so the third graders are now writing stories about their lives.

Once completed, Hanson will send the stories to the school in Uganda, and some might even be published in their school newspaper The Tender Torch. It is a great learning experience for us all!
