Sotelo Qualifies for 2013 State Wrestling Tournament
WHS Sophomore Prepares for Feb. 14-16 Event
February 8-9, 2013 (B-2 Districts)
On Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, the Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs wrestling team competed in the B-2 district wrestling tournament at Boys Town.
Sophomore Ivan Sotelo was the lone medalist for the Warriors, placing fourth in the 120 lbs. weight class and qualifying for the 2013 State Tournament, scheduled for this Thursday through Saturday at the Century-Link Center in Omaha.
Sotelo will join 15 other wrestlers from around the state of Nebraska to compete for the title of state champion at 120 lbs. Sotelo’s first match will be against Devin Ushio of Alliance on Thursday, with wrestling to start at 4:30 p.m. for classes B and C. Spangler/Anson/Lindgren/Sotelo Make Good Showings

On Saturday, January 26, The Warrior wrestling team attended the Raymond Central Invite and walked away with four medalists.
Junior Colton Spangler earned the highest place, finishing second with a close loss in the championship match to Beatrice’s Mike Nutsch.
Freshman Sean Anson also had a good showing, finishing fourth at 170 pounds, while junior Seth Lindgren 220 lbs, and sophomore Ivan Sotelo 120 lbs, both finished fifth place in their brackets.
The Warriors only wrestled seven wrestlers in the tournament and were able to finish 10th out of 12 teams, scoring 43 points.
“We would have liked to finish a little higher and placed a couple of more guys, but we wrestled hard and are seeing improvement every week, which is what we are looking for,” said Head Coach Darold Foster.

Warriors Make Good Showing at Conference; Prepare to Host Auburn & Platteview Thursday

The Warrior Wrestling team traveled to Ashland this weekend to compete in the Nebraska Capitol Conference wrestling Championships.
The Warriors had their best showing of the year finishing 4th in the team race with 83 points, behind Champion Syracuse, Arlington 2nd, and Fort Calhoun 3rd.
Two conference champions, Colton Spangler at 160 pounds, and Nathan Redding at 170 pounds, led the Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs team. Both finished the day in impressive fashion, pinning every opponent they faced and scoring much needed bonus points.
Three other Warriors earned their way onto the medal podium, as sophomore Ivan Sotelo and junior Seth Lindgren finished strong with third place finishes in the 120 and 220 pound brackets respectively. Sophomore Dillon Rademaker finished the day with fourth place in the 138 pound bracket, and a spot on the medal stand. Freshman Humberto Villarreal 126 pounds, and sophomore Tony Thorson 132 pounds also competed hard, but fell just short of earning medals.
The Warriors will welcome Auburn and Platteview to Wahoo High School this coming Thursday for a triangular starting at 5:30 p.m. for Parents Night. The wrestling team will then travel to Raymond Central next Saturday to compete in the Mustang Invite.

Warrior Wrestlers Compete at 44th Annual High Plains Invitational
Spangler & Anson Advance into Finals

Last Friday and Saturday eleven Wahoo/Cedar Bluffs wrestlers competed in Columbus, NE at the High Plains Invitational with 20 other teams.
The Warriors took a very young and inexperienced group, but competed well, advancing two wrestlers, both at 160 lbs., out of the pool competition on Friday into the 8-man bracket on Saturday.
This unique tournament consists of four 6-man pools wrestled on Friday, with the top two wrestlers from each pool advancing into the competition on Saturday for one of the six medals awarded in the tournament.
Colton Spangler and Sean Anson, both 160 pounders, took second in their pools with 2-1 records to earn the right to challenge for the High Plains Championships on Saturday.
Spangler, a junior, dropped his first match on Saturday to the number two seed Nate Grey of Battle Creek 4-16, before losing to Trev Sherman of Palmer by a 10-3 score before earning an injury default win over Sean Anson of Wahoo/Cedar Bluffs, finishing the tournament with a 3-3 record on the weekend.
Anson, a freshman, fell in his first match to Omar Rodriquez of Schuyler by fall and then lost his consolation semifinal match to Skyler Weber of Boone Central, also by pin. Anson was then forced to Injury Default his seventh place match to teammate Spangler.
Narrowly missing the action on Saturday were two other Warriors. Freshman Humberto Villarreal went 2-2 on Friday, defeating Enrique Baro of Columbus with a 7-1 decision and Nick Lindblad of Adams Central with an 11-8 decision, before dropping a close 11-8 decision to Dustin Papa of David City for a spot in Saturday’s competition. Warrior Nathan Redding also just missed competing on the 5th defeating Ben Rieckman of Harvard by pin in 1:55, then losing a heartbreaking 6-5 decision in the last ten seconds of the match against Drew Lanman of Battle Creek for the last spot in the 8-man tournament.
Other Wahoo/Cedar Bluffs Wrestlers earning victories in the tournament included sophomore Anthony Thorson, who went 1-2 on the day with a win by fall over Wyatt Bader of Palmer, and fellow sophomore Dillon Rademaker, who finished his pool with a 1-2 record and a win by fall over Anthony Grossi of Palmer.
Other Warrior wrestlers competing in the tournament included freshman Jacob Nuckolls at 113 pounds, sophomores Ivan Sotelo at 120, Kyle White at 145, Seth Lindgren at 220, and Patrick Wolf at 285. All results can be found below.

Warrior Grapplers Defeat Yutan in Season's First Home Dual

On Tuesday, December 4 the Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs wrestling team took on the Yutan Chieftains for the first home dual of the season.
The dual started at the 152 lbs. weight class with Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs sophomore Kyle White losing to Yutan’s Ryan Phillips by pin fall in a time of 3:07. At the 170 lbs. weight class, the Chieftains’ Trevor Smith pinned Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs junior Colton Spangler in a time of 4:47.
Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs junior Nate Redding collected the first Warrior win at the 182 lbs. weight class by defeating Yutan’s Josh Blair by pin fall in a time of 3:15. At the 195 lbs. weight class, freshman Rowan Ptomey pinned Yutan’s Peyton Pearce in a time of 4:22. Yutan’s Matthew Swanson collected the win for the Chieftains at the 220 lbs. weight class defeating Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs freshman Clayton Redding by decision 10-4. In his first match of the season, junior Seth Lindgren defeated Jacob Baker of Yutan by major decision 14-2.
After a forfeit at 106 lbs. in favor of Yutan, and then a forfeit in favor of Wahoo at 113 lbs., Yutan’s Tristan Charette defeated Warrior freshman Jacob Nuckolls by major decision 19-6 in the 120 lbs. weight class. Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs sophomore Ivan Sotelo then defeated 126 lbs. Kolten Root of Yutan by major decision 8-0. At the 132 lbs. weight class, sophomore Dillon Rademaker lost to Yutan’s Matt Callahan by pin fall in a time of 1:09.
Humberto Villareal, a freshman at Wahoo, defeated Braden Storm of Yutan by major decision 16-8 at the 138 lbs. weight class to finish off the night. The Warriors won the dual by a final score of 42-31.
“I was happy to see our guys pick up another dual victory for the year. As always we have a lot of work to do, and some of our technique needs to improve, but overall it’s always good to get a win at home,” said Head Coach Darold Foster.
The Warriors travel to West Point on Saturday, December 8 for the West Point Invitational. Wrestling is set to start at 9:00 a.m. Both JV and Varsity teams will be competing.
Spangler & Reading Place at Cozad Invite

On Saturday, December 1 the Wahoo-Cedar Bluff wrestling team traveled to Cozad, Nebraska for the Cozad Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
On the varsity side, junior Colton Spangler was the lone medalist, placing third at the 170 lbs. weight class. Spangler was 2-2 on the day and was defeated by Minden’s Quinn Rutt in the consolation finals match by pin fall in a time of 4:21.
Also competing for the Warriors was sophomore Ivan Sotello at 126 lbs., going 0-2, freshman Humberto Villareal at 132 lbs., going 0-2, sophomore Thomas McAtee at 145 lbs., going 0-2. At 152 lbs. sophomore Kyle White went 0-2, and junior Nathan Redding at the 182 lbs. weight class went 1-3.

Warrior Wrestlers Go 1-1 in Season's First Triangular

The Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs Warrior wrestling team traveled to Raymond Central on Thursday, November 29 to wrestle in the season-opening triangular against the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays and the Raymond Central Mustangs.
The Warriors started the triangular with a dual against the Bluejays. After the Warriors gave up a forfeit in the 106 lbs. weight class, Freshman Joey Pestal and Jacob Nuckolls claimed forfeits for the Warriors at weight classes 113 and 120 to start the dual off in favor of Wahoo, 12 – 6.
Ashland came back fighting as sophomore Ivan Sotelo was pinned by Ashland-Greenwood’s Cory Washburn in a time of 4:00, sophomore Tony Thorson was pinned by the Bluejays’ Wyatt Brauckmuller in a time of 3:00, and freshman Humberto Villareal was pinned by Ashland’s Walker Fisher in a time of 5:29.
At the 145 lbs. weight class, the Bluejays’ Dalton Gautier defeated sophomore Thomas McAtee 13-4. Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs junior Kyle White recorded his first win of the season by defeating Ashland’s Gabe Reicken by a major decision score of 12-4. Bluejays’ 160 lbs. Chase Parker defeated Warrior sophomore David Zakovec by pin fall in a time of 1:37.
At the 170 lbs. weight class, junior Colton Spangler received a forfeit, and Ashland’s Ben Stille defeated junior Nate Redding in the 182 lbs. weight class by pin fall in a time of 4:44. The Bluejays’ Jacob Petersen defeated Warrior freshman Rowan Ptomey by major decision 10-1, and at heavyweight, Ashland’s Alex DeGarmo defeated sophomore Patrick Wolf by pin fall.
The Warriors lost the dual by a final score of 50-28.

Raymond Central 36
The Warriors’ second dual of the night was against the Mustangs of Raymond Central. At the 138 lbs. weight class, the Mustangs’ Mitch Fredrickson defeated freshman Humberto Villareal by pin fall in a time of 4:14. Raymond Central’s Tyler Schmitt in the 145 lbs. weight class defeated sophomore Thomas McAtee by pin fall in a time of 1:52. Wahoo sophomore Kyle White defeated Raymond Central’s Jake Palensky by decision 12-5.
Junior Colton Spangler picked up his second win of the night at the 170 lbs. weight class with a pin over Justen Hall in a time of 2:20. Warrior junior Nate Redding was pinned by Ben Lodema of the Mustangs by pin fall in the 182 lbs. weight class in a time of 1:06. At the 195 lbs. weight class, Warrior freshman Rowan Ptomey was pinned by Raymond Central’s David McIntire in a time of 3:46. Freshman Clayton Redding was pinned by Jared Sterns of Raymond Central in a time of 0:32 at the 220 lbs. weight class.
The Warriors were able to come away with the win with a 39-36 victory.
“I thought we wrestled tough, but we still have things to improve on. I was very happy with our performance against Raymond Central. It is always nice to pick up a win like that against a tough team,” said Head Coach Darold Foster.
The Warriors will travel to Cozad on Saturday, December 1 for the Haymaker Invitational.
