The Wahoo Wrestling Team competed in the 2019 State Wrestling Tournament in Class B, which was ultra competitive and featured an extremely tight team race from start to finish. All through the three days of wrestling, the top five teams kept swapping places, with the Warriors right in the mix the whole way.
At the end of the tournament, Grand Island Northwest ended up on top with 96 team points. Omaha Skutt grabbed the runner up spot with 91. Hastings was next with 88.5, Wahoo ended up in fourth place with 83 team points. It was the highest finish for the Wahoo Wrestling program since bringing home the runner-up trophy back in 1979, and it was the third consecutive top-10 finish for the Warrior Wrestlers.
Three seniors that have been leaders for the Wahoo Wrestling program since they were freshmen, led the way one last time. All three were four-time State qualifiers, and all three came home with hardware.
Jack Sutton, wrestling at the 285-pound weight class, became the first-ever Wahoo wrestler to win two State Championships. He also won the gold last season at 220 pounds. Sutton had quick pins in his first two matches, but his Friday night semi-finals match with Josh Stallbaumer of Cozad was much tougher. Sutton needed a penalty point called on his opponent and a reversal in the final seconds of the match to get a 6-5 win. In the finals Sutton earned a 7-0 win over Noah Starfusky of York to claim the Championship.
Sutton’s year ended with a 46-0 season record, a 162-13 career record, and 95 consecutive victories. He holds school records for season (203) and career (536) takedowns, and shares the season pin record (39) with Sam Kolterman. Sutton will continue his wrestling career at the University of Nebraska at Kearney next season.
Sam Kolterman came into the tournament ranked as the #1 all-class wrestler at 195 pounds, and was highly regarded as one of the top wrestlers in the state. Kolterman had no problems with pins in his first three matches, advancing to the Finals. In the Finals it was a rematch of last year’s 195-pound Championship match with Grady Griess of Grand Island Northwest. Kolterman beat Griess last season 9-2 to earn the gold medal. This time Griess came out on fire for the match. Kolterman did get the first takedown, but from there, Griess kept the pressure on and won the match 12-3.
Kolterman finishes his Wahoo wrestling career as a two-time State Runner-Up, and a State Champion as a junior. He was 43-1 on the year with 93 consecutive wins, and finished with a Wahoo record 173 career wins. He holds the career pin record (135) as well. Kolterman will play football at Morningside next year.
Zane Bennett had won matches in each of the last three State Tournaments, but has not quite made it to the medal stand, despite notching 135 career wins, good enough for 3rd place on Wahoo’s “All Time Victories” list. This season, Bennett pushed over the hump, going 4-2 in the tournament, with four pins to earn a spot on the podium and a fourth place medal. Bennett (152 pounds) finished the year with a 44-7 record.
Four more Wahoo wrestlers scored team points for the Warriors. Junior Kole Bordovsky, 37-10 at 182 pounds, went 2-2 on the weekend, losing a 9-6 match in the wrestleback round that he needed to win to advance and guarantee himself a medal.
Freshman Malachi Bordovsky (34-13 at 106 lbs.), junior Trey Shanahan (11-9 at 138 lbs.) and sophomore Cooper Hancock (31-11 at 160 lbs.) all won first round wrestleback matches.
Sophomore Sebastian Lausterer (30-17 at 113 lbs.) and junior Peyten Walling (35-12 at 145 lbs.) wrestled in the tournament as well, giving the Warriors six returning State Qualifiers going into next season. Walling has recorded 93 career victories, putting himself in a position to move into the top three or four all time most victories next season.

Warrior Wrestling took the runner-up spot at the B3 District Meet on Feb. 8-9 at Aurora. Wahoo broke the school record, qualifying 9 for the 2019 State Meet, and our very own Coach Darold Foster was named "Coach of the Year!"
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team put in two good days of work at the B-3 District Tournament in Aurora, and did about all they could do, except bring home the Championship plaque.
Wahoo put six wrestlers in the finals, with four champions, and qualified nine wrestlers for the State Tournament in Omaha next week. The work the wrestlers did was enough to get Head Coach Darold Foster voted the 2019 B-3 District Coach of the Year. Even with all of that, Hastings outscored Wahoo 214.5 to 193, and the Warriors settled for the District Runner-Up spot for the third consecutive year.
The nine State Qualifiers are the most that the Warriors have ever sent to the State Tournament. Foster won the Coach of the Year honor in a vote by all of the head wrestling coaches in the district.
Four District Champions led the Warriors in the Tournament. Three of those champions are seniors who became four-time State Qualifiers. Previously, only seven Warriors have accomplished being four-time State Qualifiers in the 50-year history of Wahoo Wrestling.
Zane Bennett (152 lbs.) was the first to earn his fourth trip to State. Bennett pinned all three of his District opponents, with a big win over Kaleb Canoyer of Waverly in the finals. Canoyer has been ranked #1 most of the season and had only one loss, from when Bennett had pinned him in early January. Bennett will take a 40-5 record to State.
Sam Kolterman (195 lbs.) pinned his way through the tournament to become a four-time State Qualifier and keep his undefeated, 40-0 record intact.
Jack Sutton (285 lbs.) also stayed undefeated at 42-0, with three district tournament pins, earning his fourth trip to State.
Kolterman and Sutton became only the second and third Wahoo wrestlers to win three District Championships. Both wrestlers were State Champions last season, and earned medals as sophomores.
Sophomore Cooper Hancock (160 lbs.) was the fourth Wahoo Champion, with pins in all three of his matches. In the finals, Hancock trailed 5-4 at the start of the third period, and just attacked his opponent from the top position, getting the pin just .19 seconds into the period. Hancock is 30-9 on the season.
Junior Trey Shanahan (138 lbs.) made it to the finals with two pins, but forfeited the finals match because of an injury. Shanahan will be good to go at State and will take a 10-7 record to Omaha. Fellow junior Kole Bordovsky (182 lbs.), 35-8 on the season, earned his second trip to State with two district wins and an 8-2 loss in the finals.
Junior Peyten Walling (145 lbs.), with a record of 35-10, and freshman Malachi Bordovsky (106 lbs.) and 33-11, both placed third with 4-1 District records. This will be Walling’s second trip to State.
Rounding out the nine qualifiers is sophomore Sebastian Lausterer (113 lbs.), who was 2-2 at districts, 30-15 on the season and finished in fourth place.
Senior Jordan Thorson, a four-year starter for the Warrior program, completed his Wahoo wrestling career at Districts, with 69 career wins and multiple tournament plac
Freshman Gavin Pokorny and junior Nathan Mather both competed at the District meet as well.

The Wahoo Wrestlers went to Papillion-LaVista High School for the Monarch Dual Tournament with a lot on the line. The Warriors entered the tournament with a 16-2 season dual record and sitting in 9th place in Class B State Dual qualification points.
This season the Nebraska School Activities Association has adopted a points system very similar to the playoff points system used in high school football. This point system is used for qualifying teams for the Nebraska State Duals Tournament, which will be held in Kearney on February 2. The top eight teams in each class qualify for the tournament.
The Monarch Duals turned out to be a very important step for Wahoo in their attempt to qualify for the State Dual Tournament. Two extra bonus points are awarded for wrestling teams up a class and the pool that Wahoo was in had three Class A schools: Omaha Bryan, Bellevue West, Papillion-LaVista, and Papillion LaVista South. With dual wins over those schools, the bonus points would be huge towards bumping the Warrior wrestlers up into the top eight Class B schools.
Things started off well for Wahoo, defeating Omaha Bryan 52-22 in their first dual. In the second dual, the Warriors handed Bellevue West a 64-12 loss.
In the third dual of the day, things got tougher for the Wahoo Wrestlers, facing Papillion-LaVista, ranked #6 in Class A. Papio had several ranked wrestlers that scored big wins over the Warriors. Senior 152-pounder Zane Bennett had a good win over the Monarchs with a third period pin over 3rd-ranked Cole Price. Sophomore Cooper Hancock (160), junior Kole Bordovsky (182) and senior Sam Kolterman (195) got pins in the dual as well. Freshman Malachi Bordovsky (106) was in a very close match, trailing up until the last six seconds. Bordovsky forced a stalling point by his Papillion-LaVista opponent to push the match into overtime, and then got the takedown in overtime for the win. Senior Jack Sutton (285) received a forfeit in the dual. Wahoo was behind 24-0 at one point, but came back to lead 33-30 with two matches left. Papillion-La Vista came back in those last two matches to get a forfeit and a decision to beat Wahoo 39-33.
The loss to Papillion-LaVista put Wahoo into the third place match with Papillion-LaVista South. Wahoo went into this dual knowing they needed the win to qualify for the Class B State Duals Tournament. Papio South was in exactly the same position, needing the win to qualify for the Class A State Duals Tournament. Things did not go the Warriors’ way in the big match-up, with several Wahoo wrestlers losing in matches that could have gone either way. Wahoo gave up four pins in the dual, and the Titans came away with a 45-29 dual win over the Warriors. Malachi Bordovsky, Kole Bordovsky and Sam Kolterman got pins in the dual, while freshman Brandon Hasenkamp, and senior Jack Sutton got forfeits.
Malachi and Kole Bordovsky, Kolterman and Sutton were all undefeated at 4-0 for the day. Kolterman led the team with three pins and a forfeit. Sutton only wrestled one match and got a pin, while in his other three matches the teams did not send a heavyweight out to wrestle, and gave up forfeits.
Both of the Papillion high schools ended up qualifying for the State Dual tournament. Wahoo finished in 9th place in State Dual qualifying points, with their final season dual record at 18-4. The Warriors will have next weekend off and will have two weeks to prepare for their District meet at Aurora, on February 8-9.

COACHES' WEEK IN REVIEW
Nebraska’s winter weather caused some rescheduling for the second time this wrestling season.
Wahoo’s trip to compete in Nebraska City’s “Rumble on the River” Dual Tournament, scheduled for the second Saturday in January, had to be postponed to the following Monday afternoon. The meet shrunk from 16 teams to 10, but it still worked out to have two pools of five teams, all of which got the maximum allowed five matches for the day.
The Warriors started off with a 58-18 win over Fort Calhoun, then beat Seward 44-30 and Crete 51-28. To win their five-team pool, Wahoo, currently ranked #3 in Class B, defeated 9th-ranked Waverly 48-33.
Those four dual wins advanced Wahoo to the championship matchup with Hastings, Class B’s #2-ranked team. The two teams went toe to toe, with the winner undecided until the final match. Hastings came out on top by a score of 42-39, and Wahoo went home with the runner-up plaque.
Individually, five Warriors finished undefeated for the day. Sam Kolterman led the way with five pins. Peyten Walling, Cooper Hancock, Kole Bordovsky and Jack Sutton all went 5-0 as well. Kolterman (195) and Sutton (285) are both ranked #1 in their weight classes. Bordovsky (182) is ranked #4, with Walling (145) ranked #6. Sutton had a big win over an undefeated, #4-ranked freshman, Trevor Brown of Waverly, with a 2nd period pin.
Zane Bennett, ranked 4th at 152 pounds, had arguably the toughest day of the Warrior wrestlers. Against Seward, Bennett was in a tough match with fellow senior, Carson Core of Seward, ranked #3 in the weight class, and was in position to win going into the third period. The wrestlers had a wild scramble late, and Bennett was caught and pinned with :07 seconds left. It didn’t get any easier for Bennett in the Waverly dual. Bennett’s opponent there, senior Caleb Canoyer, was undefeated, ranked #1 and is a UNK Wrestling commit. Bennett got the first takedown, after swapping leads several times, Bennett got Canoyer on his back for a 2nd period pin, finishing the day 4-1 with four pins.
Malachi Bordovsky, Sebastian Lausterer, and Jordan Thorson also finished the Nebraska City meet with 4-1 records. Bordovsky and Thorson’s losses came to state-ranked wrestlers from Waverly and Hastings.
After a late Monday night in Nebraska City, the Wahoo wrestlers came right back with a 36-27 win over Bishop Neumann on Tuesday night. There were only eight contested matches in the dual, with each team getting four wins. In the Warrior wins, Bordovsky, Bennett, Hancock and Kolterman all recorded pins.
The wrestlers’ busy week continued with a 54-30 home dual win over Norris on Thursday night. Norris brought their Kids Wrestling Club and dualed Wahoo’s young wrestlers on an adjacent mat to the varsity match. The dual also featured Wahoo’s Senior Night, recognizing the Warrior Seniors. Jordan Thorson, Zane Bennett, Sam Kolterman and Jack Sutton have all been four-year starters for the Warrior Wrestling team. Dan Vyhlidal, a foreign exchange student from the Czech Republic, was also recognized as a senior.
In the Norris dual, Wahoo won eight matches, all by pin. Kolterman wrestled 3rd-ranked Dylan Meyer, and gave the Norris wrestler no room to breath with a 52-second pin. Bordovsky, Lausterer, Thorson, Walling, Hancock and Bordovsky all recorded pins as well. Bennett and Sutton had to accept forfeits for their Senior Night wins.

High Plains Highlights! Congratulations Sam Kolterman (left) on posting your 150th Career Win, and Jack Sutton on posting your 100th Career Pin!
The Wahoo Wrestling team made the trip to Columbus to wrestle in the very competitive, 21-team, 50th Annual High Plains Invite.
The tournament features many of the top wrestling programs from all four NSAA classes, and is a very rugged two days of competition.
Much of the focus of this year’s meet centered around it being the 50th year of the event, and the last year of High Plains Coach Norm Manstedt’s 50-year coaching career, after starting the Clarks/High Plains wrestling program in 1969. Manstedt is a Wahoo native who graduated from Wahoo High School and John F. Kennedy College. His first experience with wrestling was as a student teacher/assistant wrestling coach at Wahoo High School in 1968.
The Warrior wrestlers brought home the High Plains third place plaque, finishing with 160 team points. Columbus won the meet with 227 points, with Valentine finishing second with 190. David City and Battle Creek rounded out the top 5 team finishers.
The tournament’s final round was extremely competitive and an outstanding representation of top wrestlers from around the state. In the 14 weight classes, almost every wrestler in the finals was state-ranked in their weight class. Eleven of the wrestlers were ranked #1.
Seniors Sam Kolterman and Jack Sutton led the way for Wahoo. They both won their third High Plains championships and hit major career milestones. Kolterman, ranked #1 in Class B at 195 pounds, won his 150th career match on Friday. He advanced his season record to 23-0 with 5 pins at High Plains. In the finals, Kolterman pinned Anthony Deanda, Columbus, ranked #3 in Class A, in 2:24.
Sutton recorded his 100th career pin on Friday, and had 5 pins for the tournament. On Saturday, Sutton, 24-0 and Class B’s top-ranked 285 pounder, defeated Class A Creighton Prep’s 2nd-ranked Jack Hasz 8-6 in overtime to win his gold medal.
Junior 182-pounder Kole Bordovsky had two big days of wrestling, finishing 7-1 with 5 pins and boosting his season record to 20-5. Bordovsky made the finals, but was pinned by Carson Zwingman, a returning State runner-up from Columbus, and brought home a silver medal.
At 152 pounds, senior Zane Bennett, 24-3 on the season, was 6-1 at High Plains with 5 pins. Bennett wrestled Class C #1-ranked Ty Heimes of Battle Creek in the semifinals and lost 10-0. Bennett came back and pinned Jarron Metzler of Oakland-Craig in the third place match.
Malachi Bordovsky (16-9), a freshmen 106 pounder, went 3-3, and junior 145 pound Peyten Walling (20-5) went 4-3 over the weekend. Both earned 4th place medals.
Sophomore Sebastian Lausterer (17-9) and senior Jordan Thorson (6-5) placed 7th at 113 and 132 pounds. Freshmen Collin Ludvik and Gavin Pokorny wrestled unattached for Wahoo, and finished in 6th and 7th place.
Trey Shanahan (6-4), 138 pound junior, and 160 pound sophomore Cooper Hancock (15-7) both won matches at High Plains, but missed the top eight placement.

Congratulations Sebastian Lausterer, Peyten Walling and Jack Sutton, named to the "All Tournament Team" at the Dec. 29 Badger Duals Tournament in Bennington! Walling was the only wrestler in the tournament to post 5 pins on the day!
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team went into the holiday break Bennington Badgers Dual Tournament somewhat short-handed, but had a great day of wrestling and came away with a 5-0 dual record and the overall Championship trophy!
In the pool portion of the tournament, Wahoo defeated Crete 50-15, Ashland-Greenwood 51-24, Elkhorn South 48-28, and Bennington 48-27.
Omaha Skutt defeated Bellevue East 40-34 in their closest dual in the other pool to advance to the Championship match against the Warriors.
Omaha Skutt is currently ranked #1 in Class B, and the Warriors are ranked #2. Wahoo won the big matchup by a score of 39-31.
At 106 pounds Malachi Bordovsky wrestled a very tough match against Skutt’s #3-ranked Zach Ourada, losing 7-4. Sebastian Lausterer followed with 5-0 win. Wahoo forfeited the next three weight classes, and Trey Shanahan lost 15-4 to returning State Champion Nicolas Stoltenburg at 138 pounds.
Wahoo went on a tear at that point, getting four first-period pins in a row. Freshman Collin Ludvik stepped into the lineup at 145 pounds and got the first pin, with Peyten Walling, Zane Bennett and Cooper Hancock each jumping up a weight class and getting quick pins. At 182 pounds, Kole Bordovsky took on Eli Jansen, last year’s State Runner-up at this weight class, and was pinned in the second period. Both teams forfeited at 195 pounds, and Sam Kolterman received a forfeit at 220 pounds. Jack Sutton rounded out the scoring with a pin at 285 pounds.
Bennington beat Bellevue East 44-26 in the third place matchup.
Individually the Wahoo Wrestling team is still dealing with injuries and trying to get their best lineup on the mat at the same time.
In the last week it was determined that both Grant Kolterman and Brandon Swahn are done for the year with season-ending injuries. Swahn, a junior, had been wrestling at 220 pounds and is a returning State Qualifier. Kolterman, a sophomore, won 20 matches as a freshman and was this year’s 170 pounder. Both wrestlers were major contributors and had potential to score points throughout the year and at the State Tournament.
At Bennington the Warriors were led by four wrestlers that were 5-0 on the day. Peyten Walling led the way and was the only wrestler in the entire meet that had 5 pins for the day. Sebastian Lausterer, Sam Kolterman and Jack Sutton were the other undefeated wrestlers for the day.
Lausterer, Walling and Sutton were all chosen for the All Tournament Team.
Freshman Collin Ludvik filled in for two duals when Wahoo adjusted their lineup and won by pins in both his matches.
Malachi Bordovsky, Trey Shanahan, Zane Bennett, Cooper Hancock and Kole Bordovsky all went 4-1 on the day.
Freshman Gavin Pokorny and first-year wrestler Nathan Mather also filled in and wrestled matches for the Warriors.
Senior Jack Sutton put his name on the Wahoo Wrestling Record Board one more time. Sutton recorded his 463rd career takedown, breaking the career takedown record set by Jack’s brother, Paul Sutton, in 2004.
Congratulations Jack Sutton on setting a new record for "Career Take Downs" (462). The previous record was owned by Jack's brother Paul Sutton.

The Warriors came away with a 55-24 win, improving their season dual record to 4-1.

Wahoo won three matches by forfeit, with freshmen Collin Ludvik, Gavin Pokorny and sophomore Grant Kolterman getting their hands raised. Wahoo forfeited three matches to Nebraska City as well.
The Warriors did some adjusting to their line up to get the best matchups possible, with several wrestlers moving up a weight class. The biggest win of the night was Zane Bennett, normally a 152 pounder, wrestling at 160 pounds. Bennett was in a tight match with Nebraska City senior Jordan Moyer, a retuning State Qualifier and ranked 5th in Class B at 160 lbs. Bennett was down by 4 points at one point in the 2nd period, but came back and got the pin over Moyer early in the 3rd period.
Jordan Thorson, Kole Bordovsky, Sam Kolterman and Jack Sutton all recorded pins in the dual. Peyton Walling won by an 11-2 major decision, and Malachi Bordovsky had a 6-1 victory.
At 113 pounds, Sebastion Lausterer was pinned by Reid Stracke, a State Qualifier last season.
The Warriors return to action at Bennington’s “Badger Duals” Tournament on Saturday, December 29, starting at 9:00 a.m.

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team had a busy week, traveling to Blair for a Thursday night triangular with Blair and West Point-Beemer, and then hosting their own Wahoo Invite on Saturday.
Against West Point-Beemer, the Warriors won the dual 59-12, with both teams having several open weight classes. Wahoo got 8 pins and one 19-3 tech fall in the competition and did not lose a contested match.
The Blair matchup was a much tougher one for the Warriors. Wahoo entered the dual ranked #2 in Class B, with Blair ranked #4. As in previous weeks, Wahoo was still struggling with getting their whole team healthy and everyone to the weights they need to put their best team on the mat.
Wahoo entered the dual with 4 open weights and started the night down 24-0. At 106 lbs., freshman Malachi Bordovsky gave Luke Bailey from Blair all he wanted before losing 8-3. For the last 30 seconds, Bordovsky was in a position to win or at least tie the match, but couldn’t quite get it done. Bailey, a senior, is ranked #1 in Class B at 106 lbs.; Bordovsky is a freshman is ranked #6.
The first Warrior to get a win over Blair was senior Zane Bennett, wrestling at 160 lbs. for the dual, with a 42-second pin. At 170 lbs., sophomore Cooper Hancock went into the third period behind by 8 points. With a minute left in the match, Hancock got a reversal and hit a whirlwind of pinning combinations to come back and score 10 points and earn a 12-10 decision. Junior Kole Bordovsky won by a 15-0 tech fall at 182 lbs., and seniors Sam Kolterman and Jack Sutton were the other Warrior winners with a pair of pins at 220 and 285 pounds. Blair won the dual 43-26.
On Saturday, Wahoo was host to the Wahoo Invite, with 16 schools competing at the tournament. The Warriors finished in third place. David City Aquinas won the meet with 170.5 points, Lexington was the runner up with 157.5, Wahoo had 144 points, with Plattsmouth and Malcolm in fourth and fifth place.
The Warriors had five wrestlers make the finals, winning three gold medals. Peyten Walling, 10-2 and a junior, had a big day, winning four matches, three of them by pin, to claim the 145-pound gold medal. In the finals Walling pinned Jefferson McNeill of Oakland-Craig. McNeill was a returning State Placer and ranked fifth in Class C.
At 195 lbs. Sam Kolterman (12-0) defeated Hayden Dinert of Malcolm in the finals, 3-1. Dinert was a 50-match winner and placed fourth at State last season. Kolterman has won the Wahoo Invite all four years of his high school career.
Jack Sutton was the 285-pound Champion, stretching his record to 12-0 with 3 pins on the day. In the finals Sutton pinned Jade Wurth of Lexington, a fourth place finisher at last year’s State Meet.
Zane Bennett, 13-1 on the season and 2-1 in the tournament, beat previously undefeated Max Hohn of Bishop Neumann 6-1 in the semifinals, before losing in the 152-lb. finals to Class B, #2-ranked Harrison Gocke of York by a score of 4-2.
Kole Bordovsky, 8-3 on the year, had the toughest draw of the day, losing in the 182-pound finals to two-time, undefeated State Champion Joseph Reimers of David City Aquinas. Reimers, a UNK wrestling recruit, is on a mission to break the State Season Takedown Record, averaging about 15 takedowns per match. Bordovsky came out tough, making the takedowns hard to come by before being pinned late in the match. Bordovsky did have a big win in the semifinals, defeating Edwin Babtista 8-5. Babtista was third at State for Friend last season.
At 113 pounds, sophomore Sebastion Lausterer (10-5) was 3-1 in the tournament, with 3 pins to place third. Cooper Hancock (9-4) was 2-2 and placed fourth.
Malachi Bordovsky (8-5) was 2-2 on the day at 106 lbs. He missed getting to the medal round, but had a big win in the quarterfinals with a 7-2 win over Class C, #2-ranked senior Wyatt Schoepf of Centennial.
Senior Jordan Thorson was back in the line up at 132 lbs., after missing the last several meets, but did not make it to the medal round, and 220-lb. junior Brandon Swahn was injured in his first match on Saturday and was done for the day.

Congratulations Sam Kolterman (195 lbs.), Zane Bennett (152 lbs.), and Jack Sutton (285 lbs.) on taking individual championships @ the Dec. 7-8 Boys Town Invitational!
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling Team left the two-day meet on Friday night with an 18-point lead, and sat in first place. The Warriors could not hold on through the first two rounds of wrestle backs on Saturday morning, though.
For the second straight week, the Warriors battled illness, trying to get all of their wrestlers to weight classes where they can contribute. Returning state qualifier Peyten Walling and four-year starter Jordan Thorson were both out of the line up for the Boys Town meet.
When all was said and done, Wahoo settled for third place in the 15-team tournament. Blair claimed the Championship with 227 team points, followed by Omaha Skutt with 180.5 points, and then Wahoo with 175 points. Omaha Central and Harlan, Iowa rounded out the top five.
Wahoo was led by three seniors who all remain undefeated on the season.
One hundred and fifty-two pounder Zane Bennett won the Warriors’ first gold medal of the day, pinning Carter Pursley of Aurora, a senior returning state qualifier, in about a minute. Pursley was one of the top defensive players on Aurora’s state championship football team this last season. Bennett had four pins in the tournament, never going past the first period.
Sam Kolterman won the gold at 195 lbs., but only got to wrestle two matches. Kolterman had a first round bye, then two pins. In the finals Eli Jansen from Omaha Skutt, a returning state runner-up medalist, forfeited to Kolterman.
At 285 lbs., Jack Sutton is doing all he can to wrestle a very active style as a heavyweight. In his first match he scored eight takedowns before getting a second period pin, and in the semifinal, Sutton scored a16-5 major decision over a previously undefeated wrestler from Harlan, Iowa. In the finals Sutton grabbed seven takedowns and got the pin over Class A state-ranked Jacob Frezell-McClinton from Omaha Central, just as time expired. Sutton was voted the Boys Town Invitational “Outstanding Wrestler” for his efforts.
The Warriors had two more in the Championship finals, both coming away with silver medals. Sophomore Cooper Hancock was 3-1 in the tournament with two pins, dropping his finals match to Brody Nelson of Beatrice at 160 lbs. At 182 lbs., Kole Bordovsky went 2-1 at Boys Town, losing 9-2 to Alex VanDyke of Omaha Skutt. VanDyke was the 160-lb. Class “B” State Champion last season.
Freshman Malachi Bordovsky and sophomore Sebastian Lausterer both were 2-2 in the tournament and placed 4th at 106 and 113 lbs. At 170 lbs., sophomore Grant Kolterman was 2-1 in the tournament, before defaulting out with an injury and settling for a 6th place medal.
Freshman Brandon Hasenkamp (120 lbs.) and junior Brandon Swahn (220 lbs.) both won matches in the tournament, but missed getting to the medal round.

The Wahoo Wrestling team was scheduled to make their annual trip to Cozad for the first Saturday of the season, but Nebraska weather in December had other plans. The Warriors were not able to make that trip, but the Wahoo coaches and administrators jumped right into action finding another meet, and got the wrestlers into the Bennington Invite on short notice.
The change of plans was not the only adversity that the Warriors faced for the day, as senior Jordan Thorson missed the meet with an illness, sophomore Cooper Hancock lost his first round match and then forfeited out with the flu, and freshman Brandon Hasenkamp missed making his weight class.
The eight wrestlers that finished the tournament all medaled in the 9-team meet, but it was only enough to get the Warriors into third place. Missouri Valley, Iowa won the meet with 175.5 team points, followed by Bennington with 141.5, and Wahoo right behind them with 139. Elkhorn South placed fourth with 103, and Auburn rounded out the top five with 87.
Freshman 106-pounder Malachi Bordovsky stayed undefeated and won his first high school championship with a 12-0 major decision over Trey McCoy of Ft. Calhoun.

The Wahoo Wrestling team started off the season with big victories over two Conference opponents. The Warrior wrestlers won every match they wrestled against Ashland-Greenwood and Fort Calhoun. The only points surrendered were 6 points for an open weight class at 138 lbs. against Fort Calhoun. Wahoo defeated Ashland-Greenwood 60-0 and Ft Calhoun 70-6.
106-lb. freshman Malachi Bordovsky got his high school wrestling career off to a great start with two first period pins.
Neither opposing teams had 113 pounders, so the Warriors made a few adjustments to their line up: 113-lb. sophomore Sebastion Lausterer jumped up to 120 lbs., and earned a 9-0 major decision over Ft. Calhoun and a first period pin over Ashland.
Another freshman, Brandon Hasenkamp, got a good start, earning a 16-1 tech fall over Ashland-Greenwood and getting his hand raised for a forfeit in the Ft. Calhoun dual at 126 lbs. Senior Jordan Thorson recorded falls in both duals at 132 lbs.
Wahoo is competing without a wrestler at 138 lbs. for the start of the season. They do have a couple of wrestlers that could fill that weight as the season progresses.
Wahoo had to adjust weight classes throughout both duals to score as many points as possible and make the best matchups for the wrestlers. Junior Peyten Walling, a state qualifier last season, earned a first period pin over Ashland-Greenwood at 152 lbs., and a forfeit in the Ft. Calhoun dual at 145 lbs.
Zane Bennett, a senior at 152 lbs. who has qualified for three State Tournaments, got his season off to a great start with a 9-5 win over Ashland-Greenwood at 160 lbs., and a .26 second pin against Ft Calhoun at 152 lbs. Bennett missed his junior football season and all but the last few weeks of last year’s wrestling season with a knee injury, then missed six football games of his senior year with a broken bone in his leg. He is closing in on 100 career wins and is healthy and strong going into this season.
Freshman Gavin Pokorny stepped in and received a forfeit at 160 lbs. against Ft Calhoun.
Two sophomores both wrestled up a weight class. Cooper Hancock had an 11-3 win over Ashland and a 25-second fall over Fort Calhoun at 170 lbs., while Grant Kolterman had a quick pin over Ashland-Greenwood and a forfeit against Ft, Calhoun at 182 lbs. Hancock will wrestle 160 lbs. and Kolterman 170 lbs. for the season.
Regular 182-lb. starter, junior Kole Bordovsky, a returning State qualifier, missed the competition with an illness.
Junior returning State Qualifier Brandon Swahn had a quick pin over Ashland-Greenwood at 220 lbs., and received a forfeit over Ft. Calhoun at 195 lbs.
Returning State Champions, seniors Sam Kolterman and Jack Sutton, started off their seasons with two wins each. Kolterman had two pins on the night, one at 195 lbs. over Ashland-Greenwood, and the other at 220 lbs. over Ft. Calhoun. Sutton received a forfeit against Ft Calhoun, and got a pin over Ashland.
Sam Kolterman’s second win of the night was his 132nd career win, breaking the school record that had been set by Paul Sutton in 2004.
