Season Summary & Highlights (by Coach John Sutton):
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team closed out a fun and exciting year at the 2016 State Wrestling Tournament. The team finished in a tie for 23rd place in Class B with 26 team points.
Individually the Warriors were led by 220-pound junior Cole Krecklow. Krecklow placed 4th and was 3-2 over the course of the three-day tournament. He finished his junior season with a 36-6 record after placing 6th at State as a sophomore. Krecklow will go into his senior season with 63 career wins and a shot at being Wahoo’s first wrestler with 100 career wins since 2004, and a chance to become Wahoo’s 5th three-time state medalist. Krecklow won four individual tournament championships, including being an NCC Conference Champion.
Senior Sean Anson was 3-3 at the State Tournament, and earned a 6th place medal at 182 pounds. Anson finished his senior season at 26-11. He was a two-time state qualifier with 71 career wins, along with winning the Cozad Invite Championship, and was an NCC Conference Runner-Up.
Brett Walker, sophomore, competed at State at 113 pounds. He went 0-2 at the tournament, but finished the season at a very respectable 19-19. Walker did limited kids club wrestling and stepped away completely after 5th grade, doing no wrestling until the start of this season. Winning 19 matches and qualifying for State with this limited experience is a huge accomplishment! He has every chance of making huge strides as he goes into his second season of Warrior Wrestling.
The Warriors had three freshmen in the middle and upper weights come into the season with big expectations and big goals. All three had extensive experience at the club level, and have wrestled in large national meets. They all had very strong seasons, and each was in the state rankings for at least part of the season. They all were State Qualifiers! The State Tournament was tough on all three, and showed them that there is still more work to do, and that physical strength plays a huge part in competing with the big boys of Class B.
Zane Bennett, at 138 lbs., was 1-2 at State, but had a great season. Bennett finished at 38-7, tying the all-time Season Win Record for Wahoo High School Wrestling. He also had 29 pins on the season, which is one pin from tying that record. Bennett brought home championships from four tournaments as a freshman.
Sam Kolterman, 170 lbs., was also 1-2 at State after a very strong freshman season. Kolterman was 37-9 on the year with 27 pins. He also won four tournament championships, including the NCC Conference Championship for his weight class.
At 195 lbs., Jack Sutton went 0-2 at State. Sutton came back from a compound fracture of his femur bone in June, which cost him the football season. He had a strong preseason of wrestling practice, then a knee injury in practice over Thanksgiving break, which required surgery. Sutton finally got on track after the semester break and finished the freshman season at 19-8. He was the Champion at the Syracuse Pin Tournament, and an NCC Conference Runner-Up.
Humberto Villarreal had a strong senior season at 145 lbs., finishing 25-9. Berto spent most of the season rated in the top 6 in the state rankings, but ran into an extremely tough weight class at districts, and just missed qualifying for State. He was the NCC Conference Champion, beating a previously undefeated wrestler from Ashland to claim that title.
Jordan Thorson wrestled a bit undersized all year as a freshman at 106 lbs., but managed to finish with an 11-16 record, and placed 3rd at the NCC Conference Tournament. Jordan’s goal will be to put on some good muscle, and maybe cut some weight down to 106 next year, to be bigger and stronger at the weight class.
Tayler Cuda, 126-lb. senior, finished his season at 10-13. Cuda had a huge pin for the Warriors to secure a team dual win against Nebraska City, a team which finished 9th at the State Tournament.
Josh Nuckolls wrestled at 120 lbs. for most of the season, but jumped to 132 for districts, and finished his sophomore season at 19-17. Nuckolls placed at three tournaments, and was a Capitol Conference Runner-Up.
Ryan Walker, 152-lb. junior, finished at 25-14 and lost in the “Heartbreak Round” at districts to miss qualifying for State. Walker was a Syracuse Pin Tournament Champion, and finished 3rd at Conference.
Tucker Hancock was 26-18 as a sophomore at 160 lbs. on the season. Hancock was a Syracuse Pin Tournament Champion, finished 3rd at Conference, and placed at two other meets.
Eli Zeleny, sophomore, held down the 132-lb. weight class for part of the year, and was a part time JV wrestler. Eli was small for the weight class, and was out last year with an injury. With another year of experience and some good time in the weight room, he should have a much stronger season next year.
Jacob Nuckolls, senior at 152 lbs., was in the difficult position of being in a weight class where Wahoo had good depth all around him. Nuckolls wrestled off against Ryan Walker several times for the varsity position, and it was always a one-point or overtime match, with Walker holding the spot. Nuckolls always worked hard in practice, and was a great practice partner for all of the middle weight varsity wrestlers. Nuckolls was 17-2 on junior varsity, and 3-1 varsity wrestling at the Papillion Duals when Walker was nursing an injury.
Levi Janousek, a sophomore 152-pounder and the lone Cedar Bluffs wrestler on the Warrior team, contributed all season as a steady junior varsity wrestler. Janousek is another wrestler that will benefit next year from his year of experience.
As a team, this year’s Warrior Wrestling Team had many highlights. They broke the Wahoo Wrestling High Season Team Dual Wins Record with a 10-3 Dual record. The old record was 9 wins in a season, which was set in 1979.
The team also won two Team Tournament Championships. They brought home first place trophies from the Syracuse Pin Tournament and the Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament.
While the Warrior Wrestlers had one of their most successful seasons in many years, they will have higher goals for next year, including several more State medals and a Top 10 finish at the State Tournament, and to qualify as a team for the Nebraska State Dual Tournament.

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team battled through the “District of Death” at Norris High School last Friday & Saturday.
This year’s B-1 District featured 6 of the top 10 teams rated in the most recent Huskermat rankings. This District has prompted much debate amongst coaches, fans and at the NSAA level. The disparity of ranked teams is more than likely going to bring a rule change in Class B, and we will probably see a serpentine system by next year that should spread top wrestling programs more evenly between the 4 Class B districts.
That said, the Warriors did a great job of battling through the adversity, and qualified 6 wrestlers for the State Tournament at the Century Link next week! As a team the Wahoo Wrestlers placed 5th out of the 12-team field. Omaha Skutt won the tournament, with Plattsmouth claiming the runner-up trophy.
The Warrior team went into the second day of the tournament with all 12 of the entered wrestlers still alive, 7 in the semi-finals, and 5 in the wrestle backs. Everyone involved knew that it would be a grueling day of wrestling, and it definitely proved to be.
Sam Kolterman and Cole Krecklow were the first Warriors to secure their tickets to State by winning their semi-final matches.
Kolterman, a 170-lb. freshman, was matched up with Darin Sorenson, a Nebraska City senior with a 35-1 record. Kolterman, 36-7, pulled the upset with a wild scramble and a reversal as time expired to earn his way into the finals, and his trip to state, with an 8-7 decision. Kolterman was defeated in the finals by Gage Orton of Plattsmouth, the #1-ranked 170-pounder in Class B.
Cole Krecklow, 33-4 junior at 220 lbs, won a wild semi-final that was decided in overtime, on 2 penalty points by Krecklow’s opponent, Jake Kreifel of Nebraska City. Krecklow lost a hard-fought, 5-2 decision in the finals to Logan Radik, of Gretna, the #1 ranked wrestler in the state at that weight class. Krecklow placed 6th at last year’s State Meet.
The rest of the Warrior qualifiers lost their semi-final matches, but came back & won the “Heartbreak Round” match that they needed to win to qualify.
Brett Walker, 19-17 sophomore, placed 4th at 113. Walker was 2-2 in the tournament, and his key match was a big overtime win over Clayton Williams from Norris in the quarterfinals. Walker fought an injury throughout the tournament that prolonged all of his matches with lengthy blood time.
Zane Bennett, 37-5 freshman, earned his spot by placing 4th at 138 lbs. He was 2-2 in the tournament after only losing 3 matches the entire regular season. Bennett is one win from tying the Wahoo Wrestling program’s all-time record for season wins.
Sean Anson, 23-8 senior at 182 lbs, placed 3rd and was 3-1 at the tournament. Anson defeated Danny Thompson of Omaha Skutt in the consolation final. This is Anson’s second trip to the State Tournament.
Jack Sutton, 19-6 freshman, was 4-1 in the tournament at 195 lbs., and placed 3rd, defeating Andrew Harrah of Nebraska City in the 3rd place match.
Josh Nuckolls, Humberto Villarreal & Ryan Walker all made it to the Consolation Semifinals, also known as the “Heartbreak Round.” This round pits the semi-final loser against wrestlers that have won their way back through the wrestle back rounds. Winners go to state & the losers’ seasons are over. Anyone associated with the sport knows this is an extremely emotional round for wrestlers, coaches & fans.
Villarreal, 25-9 senior at 145 lbs., deserves special recognition here. He has been a top contributor for the Warriors throughout his career. He found himself in a weight class stacked with rated wrestlers, and lost a very tough match to Kyle Francois of Nebraska City in the Heartbreak match. Several longtime Wahoo wrestling fans commented that Villarreal may be the best wrestler Wahoo has ever had that did not to qualify for the State Tournament.
Jordan Thorson, 106 lbs freshman, Taylor Cuda, 126 lbs. senior, and Tucker Hancock, 160 lbs. sophomore, all contributed at the District Tournament as well.
The Warriors wrestle in the early session at State this year, with wrestling starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Warrior Wrestling follows NCC Championship with hard-fought dual victory @ Nebraska City
Cuda slams the door in close 42-33 win
January 26, 2016 (@ Nebraska City)
Wahoo 42 | Nebraska City 33 WIN
The Wahoo/Cedar Bluffs wrestlers traveled to Nebraska City for a showdown between two top 10 teams. Wahoo entered the competition ranked 9th by Huskermat.com, while Nebraska City held the #10 spot.
The dual would live up to the rankings, as it came down to the last match of the night.
The night started with the 132 lb. weight class, where Nebraska City jumped out to a 6-0 lead when Tony Heng pinned Eli Zeleny in the 2nd period.
The Warriors’ Zane Bennett responded in kind at 138 lbs. with a first period fall of Neb. City’s Rhett Trail, knotting the score at 6-6.
The 145-pound weight class provided the most anticipated match-up between Humberto Villarreal and Nebraska City’s Kyle Francois. Francois put the Pioneers back on top with an 11-5 decision and a 9-6 Nebraska City lead.
The Warriors tied the score again (9-9) with a 7-6 double overtime victory by Wahoo’s Ryan Walker over Brett Minner.
The Warriors then took command, rattling off three strait pins and a forfeit at 182 pounds. Tucker Hancock started the Warriors’ pinning streak at 160 lbs. with a fall of Joseph Seyler in 5:22, followed by Sam Kolterman’s 1:25 pin of David Sanchez at 170 lbs., leaving the score 21-9.
After Sean Anson accepted his forfeit at 182 lbs., Jack Sutton got back on track with a 3rd period pin over Andrew Harrah, building a 24-point lead for Wahoo. At 220 pounds, Cole Krecklow contributed another 3 points to the Warriors’ score with a 7-3 decision over Jake Kreifel, leaving the score at 36-9.
The Pioneers then started a pinning streak of their own that would bring them within striking distance of the Warriors. Nebraska City’s Bryce Boyd would accept a forfeit and 6 points at 285 pounds, before Chris Adams would get them rolling with a :24 second pin of Warrior Jordan Thorson, bringing the score to 36-21. After two more pins by Brenden Kenter at 113 lbs. over Bret Walker, and Pioneer Jordan Moyers’ fall of Josh Nuckolls, the Warrior lead dwindled down to a mere 3 points, with a 36-33 Warrior edge going into the final bout of the night at 126 lbs.
Wahoo Senior Tayler Cuda would be the nail that sealed the door shut on the Pioneers, as he recorded a first period pin over Nebraska City’s Josh Delunger, ending the dual 42-33 in favor of the Warriors.
“Our guys battled tonight with a very good opponent,” commented Head Coach Darold Foster. “They went out and got bonus points for us that would prove to be the difference.”

Warrior Wrestlers defeat North Bend & Yutan in Tues. triangular
Wahoo prepares for Boys Town's Fri/Sat Invite
December 8, 2015 (Triangular @ Yutan)
On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Wahoo/Cedar Bluffs Wrestling team traveled to Yutan for a triangular with Yutan and North Bend Central. The Warriors produced another strong showing as they came away with two hard-fought victories!
The first dual of the night saw Wahoo face off against a very good North Bend Central squad. The Warriors needed some of their young wrestlers to step up and win matches, and they proved to be up to the challenge, as the Wahoo downed North Bend 44-30.
Freshman Zane Bennett continued a very impressive start to his high school career with a fall at 138 lbs., boosting him to a 7-0 record on the season. Joining Bennett with falls in the dual were sophomore Josh Nuckolls and junior Cole Krecklow. The Warriors earned bonus point in five matches, adding major decisions by sophomore Bret Walker (12-3) and senior Sean Anson (13-5). Junior Ryan Walker and senior Humberto Villarreal contributed with wins at 152 and 145.
In the second dual of the night, Wahoo squared off against Yutan. The Warriors rode falls by Villarreal, Bennett, and an impressive 22-second pin by Krecklow to a 51-27 victory! Wahoo also earned points from Josh Nuckolls with a 6-3 decision that gave them the edge in the dual.
“I would not say that we wrestled the best dual of the year, but we had some guys that gutted out some wins,” commented Head Coach Darold Foster. “We have some things to build on, but we are getting better every time we step on the mat.”
The Warriors’ next competition will be the Boys Town Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12, and a triangular with Blair and West Point-Beemer next Tuesday in Blair.

Warrior Wrestlers celebrate straight season-opening victories at Thursday's Ft. Calhoun Triangular!
Wahoo/Cedar Bluffs opened up its 2015-16 season in an impressive fashion with wins over Fort Calhoun (60-6) and Huskermat’s pre-season #9-ranked Ashland-Greenwood (45-36).
The Warriors started the night against the Fort Calhoun Pioneers. The Warriors rolled, recording 3 falls, 1 technical fall and 1 major decision in the six contested matches of the night, while giving up their only points by forfeit at 132lbs.
The second dual of the night would prove to be an exciting contest with Ashland-Greenwood that would come down to the last match to decide the winner.
The Warriors and Bluejays traded scores through much of the dual, starting with a forfeit to sophomore Tucker Hancock at 160 lbs., and freshmen Sam Kolterman earning a fall over Jacob Teahon of A-G, giving the Warriors a 12-0 lead.
Ashland countered with an injury default win for Trevor Nicholson over Warrior senior Sean Anson at 182 lbs., and a forfeit at 195 for Erik Pike that would knot the score at 12 -12.
The two teams again traded scores at 220 and 285 lbs., as Wahoo junior Cole Krecklow scored a :49 second pin against Chase Dierks of Ashland, and Ben Stille received a forfeit, leaving the score at 18-18 after 6 matches.
At 106 and 113, Warrior Jordan Thorson earned a 15-8 victory over Delkin Grell, while sophomore Bret Walker earned a fall over Ashland’s Nolan Beckenhauer. At 120 Josh Nuckolls defeated Hunter Tucker of Ashland with a fall in 1:09. Ashland would then bring the score to 33-30 after Liam Landauer received a forfeit, and Dawson Grell of Ashland pinned Warrior Tayler Cuda.
Freshman Zane Bennett would earn a fall with 3 seconds left in the match to expand the Wahoo lead to 39-30 before Cody Lambert of Ashland received a forfeit at 145 to bring the Bluejays within 3 points going into the last match of the night. Warrior junior Ryan Walker then slammed the door shut on the Bluejays with a 3:55 fall over Michael Landauer, leaving the final score 45-36.
“I was really impressed with our guys tonight,” commented Head Coach Darole Foster. “They were aggressive and earned some really nice wins, over very good opponents.”
