The Wahoo Wrestling team concluded their 2021-2022 season with the typical three long, hard days at the State Tournament in Omaha. The wrestling in Nebraska just keeps getting tougher with more competitors going on to Division I schools and young competitors wrestling all over the nation and internationally at high level tournaments.
Bennington won the Class B Championship with Hastings claiming the Runner-Up spot. Wahoo finished in 19th place with their four State Qualifiers.
Senior Malachi Bordovsky did not finish where he and everyone else involved with the program was hoping, but he wrapped up a fabulous high school career as one of the most decorated wrestlers in Wahoo history.
Bordovsky dropped the 138-pound State Finals match to A.J. Parrish of Bennington by a 5-3 score, to finish as a State Runner-Up, with a 52-1 season record.
Bordovsky was the State Runner-Up as a junior as well, and was a 6th place finisher as a sophomore. He qualified for State as a freshman. Bordovsky did a major assault on the Wahoo record board, knocking two-time State Champion Jack Sutton, a 2019 graduate, out of the top spot on both the takedown categories. Bordovsky set new school records with 287 season takedowns and 584 career takedowns. He also knocked 2019 graduate Sam Kolterman, a State Champion, a three-time finalist, and a current Warrior wrestling coach, off the top spot in career wins. Kolterman had 173 wins over four years, with Bordovsky beating him by one to finish with 174 career wins. Bordovsky ended the season tied with Sutton for the most season wins with 52. Bordovsky will attend school and wrestle at Iowa Western Community College next year.
Sophomore Isaiah Foster came into the State Tournament as a 126-pound District Runner-Up and won his first two matches to earn a spot in the Friday night semifinal, locking up a State medal. Foster had a first round pin, then a tough, back-and-forth 9-6 quarterfinal win over a District Champion, Trev Greve of Waverly. In the semis, Foster came out quickly, getting an early takedown before getting pinned in a scramble with Kyler Lauridson of Bennington. Lauridson went on to win the championship as a freshman. He is the brother of Kael Lauridson, who won his third State Championship for Bennington as a junior on Saturday. The Lauridsons are well known for wrestling year round all over the nation and internationally with a great deal of success. Foster finished with a 6th place medal and a 22-11 record on the season.
Kyan Lausterer, a senior at 195 pounds, qualified for his first State Tournament in his last season, getting a tough first round draw. He was pinned by 3rd place finisher Wyatt Fanning of Waverly. Lausterer then lost a hard-fought close 4-3 match in the first round of wrestle backs. Lausterer split his time all through elementary and middle school between basketball and wrestling, then played basketball his first two years of high school. He joined the wrestling team as a junior and held down the 195-pound weight class for two years, winning 54 career matches, including a 25-22 record as a senior. He was a one-point loss (in the District Heartbreak round as a junior) away from being a two-time State Qualifier.
At 220 pounds junior Dominek Rohleder had a tough draw as well. Rohleder was pinned in the first round by eventual State Champion Mikah Ruiz of Nebraska City. This was the third time this season Rohleder had wrestled Ruiz. In the first round of wrestle backs, Rohleder met up with 5th place finisher Victor Isele of Grand Island Northwest, and was pinned to finish his season at 31-19.

CONGRATULATIONS 2022 Warrior State Wrestling Qualifiers: Isaiah Foster (District Runner-Up @ 126 lbs.), Malachi Bordovsky (District Champion @ 138 lbs.), Kyan Lausterer (@ 195 lbs.), and Dominek Rohleder (@ 220 lbs.)! TEAM RESULTS
1. Hastings (208), 2. Blair (192), 3. Minden (123.5), 4. Pierce (121), 5. Omaha Skutt Catholic (115), 6. Columbus Lakeview (91), 7. Wahoo (82.5), 8. Norris (81.5), 9. Elkhorn (69), 10. York (59), 11. Crete (48), 12. Schuyler (29)
The Warrior Wrestling team traveled to Minden for the two-day, Class B, District 3 tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Warriors placed seventh out of 12 teams with 82.5 team points. Hastings won the meet, scoring 208, and Blair was the Runner-Up with 192. The Wahoo Wrestling team qualified four wrestlers for next week's State Tournament.
Senior Malachi Bordovsky led the way, as he has all season, winning the 138-pound weight class. Bordovsky had a tough match in the final with Drew Cooper of Skutt, but came out on top by an 8-7 score to stay undefeated on the season. Bordovsky is a four-time State Qualifier and will take a 49-0 record along with the #1 ranking into the State Tournament.
Sophomore Isaiah Foster (20-8) finished ahead of his seed, going in as the third seed at 126 pounds, but coming out as the District Runner-Up. In the semifinal round, Foster beat Andon Stenger of Columbus Lakeview, a senior with a 39-2 record by a score of 13-5 to earn a trip to the finals. In the finals Foster was pinned by undefeated Braiden Kort of Hastings. This will be Foster's second time competing at the State Tournament.
Senior Kyan Lausterer (25-20) finished ahead of his seed as well, coming in seeded fifth, but beating the #2 seed from Schuyler in the Heartbreak Round 2-1, ultimate tiebreaker overtime, which actually means eight minutes of wrestling and six periods, which is very grueling. The win qualified Lausterer for the State Tournament and the Consolation Final, where he finished fourth place at 195 pounds.
Junior Dominek Rohleder (31-17) at 220 pounds was Wahoo’s final State Qualifier, placing 4th to earn his ticket.
At 132 pounds, Freshman Caden Smart (21-6) made it to the Consolation Semifinal round, known as the “Heartbreak Round” because winners of this round qualify for State and the loser's season is over. Emotions in this round run high and it is tough to imagine any situation in high school athletics that is tougher on the athletes, the families, and the coaches. Smart was seeded third, but his semifinal matchup was a tough one, with #2 seeded senior, 39-2 Brock Bolling of Pierce. Smart dropped that match 2-1, then had a tough cross bracket into the consolation match with another very talented freshman, Orrin Kuehn with a 39-9 record. Smart dropped that match 4-3 and missed qualifying for State.
Sophomore 285-pounder Trevor Beavers (14-9), who wrestles the weight class weighing about 210 pounds, made it to the “Heartbreak Round” as well, but lost a 4-0 match to the heavyweight from Blair.
Brandon Hasenkamp (26-16) at 160 pounds was in an extremely tough weight class that should have several District B3 guys earn State medals. Hasekamp did win one match at the tournament after a career that saw him have to fight back from several serious injuries that cost him mat time over his four years of high school.
At 120 pounds, sophomore Jet Nuckolls (22-20) missed being a State Qualifier after wrestling at State last season. Noah Bordovsky (21-24) had a strong freshman season wrestling the 145 weight class for the season to help the team, but would have been more comfortable one or two weight classes lower.
One more wrestler, freshman Wyatt Rezac at 170 pounds, made the trip to Minden to wrestle, but 41 seconds into his first match, he suffered a badly dislocated elbow and had to be taken by rescue squad to Kearney to have the elbow reset. Rezac took the injury in stride and was back at the tournament on Saturday to cheer the Warriors on.
The Warriors have fought injury problems through the whole season. Early on, 152 pound junior starter Griffin Lausterer, a State Qualifier last season, was forced to sit out the rest of the season with a recurring knee injury. Two-year starter Kaleb Broome had a knee injury as well, and the 170 pounder was not able to finish. Freshman 152 pounder Logan Fittro also missed the end of the season. Isaiah Foster and Caden Smart missed considerable time in the middle of the season with injuries as well, but luckily were able to come back strong at the end.

WEEK 7 SUMMARY
On Tuesday the Wahoo Wrestling team hosted Conestoga for their first home dual of the season. Both teams had several open weight classes. There were only 7 contested matches out of the 14 weight classes, with the Warriors winning 4 of those. Conestoga did record pins in all three of their wins. The team score ended up 42-42, with Conestoga winning the dual on the criteria that Wahoo had more open weight classes than Conestoga (four vs. three). Jet Nuckolls, Malachi Bordovsky, Brandon Hasenkamp and Wyatt Rezak all had pins for the Warriors’ four wins, with Dominek Rohleder and Trevor Beavers adding forfeit wins.
Friday evening the wrestlers headed to Springfield-Platteview for the Trailblazer Conference Tournament. The Conference currently only has six members. Wahoo placed third as a team, finishing behind Conference Champion Nebraska City and Beatrice. Freshman Caden Smart came back from an injury that has kept him out of the lineup since the Holiday Break, to win the 132-pound Championship. Smart is 19-4 on the season. At 138 pounds, senior Malachi Bordovsky kept up his winning ways, winning the weight class championship and advancing his record to 44-0. Sophomore 285-pounder Trevor Beavers, who actually weighs about 210, won a Conference Championship as well. Beavers’ weight class was a four-man round robin with Beavers going 2-1. Everyone in the weight class lost at least one match, and Beavers (11-7) won the gold medal on criteria.
Sophomore Isaiah Foster (16-7) also has missed time with an injury since the Holiday Break, and was 2-1 at Conference, earning a Runner-Up spot on the podium at 126 pounds. Senior Kyan Lausterer (21-16) at 195 pounds was a Runner-Up as well.
Sophomore Jet Nuckolls (21-18) at 120 pounds, freshman Noah Bordovsky (21-20) at 145 pounds, and junior Dominek Rohleder (27-15) at 220 pounds, all earned fourth place medals at the meet.
Senior Brandon Hasenkamp (23-17) at 160 pounds and Kaleb Broome (14-23) at 170 pounds both competed at the Conference tournament as well.
This coming Tuesday the Warrior wrestlers will host Bishop Neumann for a home dual and Senior Night. The team is off the next weekend, but will travel to Minden for the District tournament on February 11-12.

WEEK 6 SUMMARY
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team had an extremely busy week. On Monday they traveled to Nebraska City to compete in the Rumble in River Country Dual Tournament. The event had been scheduled for the previous Saturday, but was postponed due to weather.
The Warriors were short handed for the duals with some lingering injuries. There is hope to get a couple of regular starters back into the lineup by the Conference tournament next week.
Wahoo got a 52-21 dual win over Crete, but dropped duals to Seward, Nebraska City, Elkhorn, and Fort Calhoun.
Malachi Bordovsky and Kyan Lausterer both went 5-0 at Nebraska City. Trevor Beavers and Dominek Rohleder had good days, swapping back and forth at the 220 and 285-pound weight classes, with Beavers finishing 4-1 and Rohleder 3-2. Kaleb Broome was 3-1 on the day, wrestling up a weight class at 182 pounds to help fill out the team. Brandon Hasenkamp was 3-2 wrestling at 160 pounds. Jet Nuckolls, Noah Bordovsky, Logan Fittro, and Wyatt Rezac all won matches at Nebraska City as well.
After a late night at Nebraska City on Monday, the team headed to David City High School, ranked fourth in Class C, for a Tuesday night dual. Malachi Bordovsky had a good match up with fifth-ranked Josh Spatz of David City. After a 0-0 first period, Bordovsky opened things up and scored 14 takedowns in the second and third periods for a 28-13 tech fall. Rohleder had a first period pin at 220 pounds, with Beavers winning a hard-fought 5-0 match over a David City wrestler that outweighed him by about 65 pounds in the 285-pound weight class. Broome added a forfeit win at 170 pounds and the Scouts came away with a 45-20 dual win.
On Friday the wrestlers were at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney for the UNK Midwest Dual Tournament, put on by the University Of Nebraska at Kearney wrestling team. The Warriors were able to come up with one dual win, beating Kearney Catholic 45-24. Wahoo dropped duals to Central High School (Cheyenne, WY), Broken Bow, Bellevue West, and Norton (KS).
Broken Bow is ranked #4 in Class B with a very solid team, but Wahoo did have some exciting matches in that matchup. Malachi Bordovsky had a very good opponent in fifth-ranked Connor Wells. Wells wrestled a tough match, but Bordovsky kept up his winning ways with a 10-2 victory. Hasenkamp came from behind to get a pin at 160 pounds, and Broome used a wild escape at the third period buzzer to get a win at 170 lbs.
Malachi Bordovsky was 5-0 at the UNK Duals and was named to the All Tournament Team at 138 pounds. Bordovsky, 39-0 and ranked #1 in Class B at 138 pounds, is attacking the Wahoo Record Board at about the same rate he is beating his opponents. In the last two weeks he has become the third wrestler in Wahoo history to hit 150 career wins, and he recorded his 100th career pin. At Nebraska City he got his 204th season takedown, and then at Kearney he recorded his 537th career takedown to claim both Wahoo Wrestling Season and Career Takedown records. Both records were held by 2019 graduate and two-time State Champion Jack Sutton.
Noah Bordovsky and Dominek Rohleder both had good days at Kearney going 4-1, with Hasenkamp going 2-1. Nuckolls and Lausterer both had winning records at Kearney at 3-2. Rezek and Broome also won matches at Kearney.

WEEK 4 SUMMARY
The Wahoo Wrestling team competed in the Bennington Dual Tournament on Thursday, December 30, over the Holiday Break.
First up the Warriors went against Bennington, the #1-ranked wrestling team in Class B. Wahoo was missing several starters for the day with injuries and sickness, and was not in a great position for competing in a dual format tournament. The Badgers came out on top by a score of 63-18. Malachai Bordovsky, Brandon Hasenkamp, and Dominek Rohleder all picked up pins over their Bennington competitors. There were some really tough draws in the dual, with Jet Nuckolls going against nationally-ranked, two-time State Champion Kael Lauridsen, freshman Noah Bordovsky wrestling state placer AJ Parrish, and Kyan Lausterer up against returning State Champion and All State Linebacker Luke MacDonald.
Next up, Wahoo went against Elkhorn South, with the Storm coming out on top 58-15. M. Bordovsky and Hasenkamp were the only Warriors to win contested matches, and Rohleder picked up a forfeit win.
In the third round, Wahoo was in a close dual with Fairbury. The Warriors won five of the seven contested matches, but gave up too many forfeits for open weight classes to get the dual win. Fairbury came out on top by a score of 36-33. Nuckolls, M. and N. Bordovsky, and Rohleder all won by pins, with Fittro adding a 5-3 decision and Kaleb Broome picking up a forfeit win.
Wahoo wrestled perennial Class B power Omaha Skutt in the fourth round. Skutt was not at full strength either and had several open weight classes, so several forfeits went both ways, with Skutt winning the dual 41-24. M. Bordovsky had the Warriors’ big match of the day against Skutt. Bordovsky, 25-0 on the season and ranked #2 in Class B at 138 lbs., matched up with Skutt’s Drew Cooper, ranked right behind Bordovsky at #3. Cooper got a couple of takedowns to build a 4-1 lead, but Bordovsky battled back and had an 8-7 lead before pinning Cooper with three seconds left in the match. Hasenkamp and Nuckolls got pins over Skutt as well. Lausterer, Rohleder, and Trevor Beavers picked up forfeit wins over Skutt.
In the fifth and final dual of the day, wrestling for 9th place, Wahoo got a 41-24 win over Ralston. There were only six contested matches in the dual, with Wahoo winning five of them. Hasenkamp and Lausterer had pins. M. Bordovsky had a 24-7 tech fall, with N. Bordovsky and Broome winning by decisions over the Rams. Nuckolls, Rohleder, and Beavers all won by forfeit.
Rohleder was 5-0 on the day and was rewarded by being named to the All Tournament Team at 220 pounds. M. Bordovsky was 5-0 on the day as well, but was kept off the All Tournament Team by Bellevue East’s Garrett Grice, the #1-ranked pound for pound wrestler in Nebraska. Grice is going for his fourth State Championship this season and is a Division I Virginia recruit. Bellevue East was in the opposite pool for the Warriors, so Bordovsky and Grice did not meet. Hasenkamp had a good day as well, going 4-1 with some very tough competition.

WEEK 3 SUMMARY
The Wahoo Wrestling team traveled to Blair on Tuesday night to compete in duals with a couple of state-ranked dual teams.
First up, the Warriors wrestled the host school Blair, who has the number-three-ranked dual team in Class B. Wahoo managed to come out of that dual with Malachi Bordovsky and Dominek Rohleder getting pins over Blair, and Caden Smart winning by an 11-1 major decision. Blair won the dual 54-16.
Next, Wahoo went up against Class B ninth-ranked Nebraska City. This match was much closer with Wahoo winning five of the ten contested matches, and the winner not decided until the last match of the contest. Jet Nuckolls, Isaiah Foster, and Brandon Hasenkamp all recorded pins over the Pioneers. Caden Smart and Trevor Beavers had wins by decision, with Malachi Bordovsky and Kyan Lausterer picking up forfeit wins. Nebraska City came out ahead with a final team score of 42-36.
On Saturday, Wahoo hosted its own invitational with 16 teams and a good mix of teams from classes A, B, C, and D. David City Aquinas, the number-one-ranked team in Class C, ran away with the team championship, scoring 199 team points over runner-up Omaha Westside, ranked fifth in Class A, with 111 points. Wahoo placed seventh in the meet.
Senior 138 pounder Malachi Bordovsky had a big day, going 4-0 with four pins to win his weight class Championship. Bordovsky was voted the Wahoo Invite’s “Doug Watts Most Valuable Wrestler” by the participating head coaches. The MVP award is named after long time former Wahoo Wrestling Coach Doug Watts. Bordovsky ran his season record to 20-0, and is on track to finish among the top leaders for Wahoo’s all-time career wins, and is gunning for season takedowns and pins records.
At 160 pounds senior Brandon Hasekamp (10-7) had a good day, winning two matches to make it to the finals and finish as a runner-up.
Sophomore Isaiah Foster (14-6) placed third at 126 pounds, losing a close 5-2 decision to two-time State placer Aaron Ohnoutka of Bishop Neumann in the semifinals, and was 3-1 on the day.
Freshman 132 pounder Caden Smart (17-4) had a rugged day, but came away with a third place medal. In the semifinal Smart lost 5-2 to Ashland’s Blaine Christo, a third place State finisher last season. It was Smart’s second close loss to Christo this season. In the wrestlebacks Smart ran into another returning State third place finisher, Cade Lierman from Bishop Neumann. Smart had built a good lead in the match when the two wrestlers' heads collided and Smart's right eye immediately swelled completely shut. Smart waived off taking any injury time and went on to win the match by pin! He then wrestled in the third place match with his eye swollen shut and scored two back points in the last five seconds to get the 4-3 win.
The Wahoo Wrestling team will head to Bennington over the break on Thursday, December 30 for a dual tournament.

The two teams did not match up real well, with both teams having several open weight classes. The Warriors won six of the eight contested matches and came away with a 42-27 dual win.

The Warriors came out in third place in the team race, finishing behind Columbus and Papillion La-Vista South. Wahoo was led by returning State Runner-Up senior Malachi Bordovsky at 138 lbs. Bordovsky was 4-0 with 4 pins to place first. Sophomores Jet Nuckolls and Isaiah Foster, wrestling at 120 and 126 pounds, both finished second at the meet with Nuckolls going 2-1 and Foster 3-1.
Freshmen Caden Smart at 132 pounds and Noah Bordovsky at 145 pounds both went 3-1, junior Kaleb Broome went 2-1 at 170 pounds, and junior Dominek Rohleder finished 3-1 at 220 pounds. All four captured third place medals. Freshman Logan Fittro at 152 pounds and senior Brandon Hasenkamp at 160 both placed fifth. Trevor Beavers, a sophomore wrestling as Wahoo’s second entry at 220, went 2-2 and placed fifth.
On Saturday Wahoo competed in the 51st Annual Boys Town Invitational. The tournament has traditionally been a very large, 16 plus, two-day tournament, but was pared down to an eight-team tournament with a mix of teams from Classes A and B for this season.
This tournament used the round robin bracketing format also, again giving the athletes an opportunity to wrestle a lot of matches. The Warriors wrestled extremely well, coming away with the team championship plaque, outdistancing runner-up Omaha Central by a team score of 190.5-145. On Saturday the Wahoo wrestlers won 35 matches with only 7 losses, and collected 32 pins. The three wins that were not pins all scored bonus points for the team.
Wahoo was led at Boys Town by six individual championship performances. Nuckolls, 9-5 on the year had 4 pins, Malachi Bordovsky pushed his season record to 14-0 with 2 pins and a major decision, Noah Bordovsky (10-3) had 5 pins, Hasenkamp (7-5) had 4 pins, junior Kyan Lausterer, 6-4 on the year at 195 lbs., had 5 pins, and Rohleder (9-5) had 3 pins.
Foster (11-4) and Smart (12-3) both placed second, losing close finals matches to Ely and Lance Olberding of Fort Calhoun. The Olberding twins are both two-time state placers. Fittro (3-3) placed second as well, going 2-1 on the day. Broome (6-8) finished third with a 2-2 day and Trevor Beavers competed at 285 pounds, missing the medal round.

WEEK 1 SUMMARY
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team started off their 2021-22 season with a Thursday night triangular at Waverly. Wahoo was short-handed, with a couple of starters out of the lineup, and came out of the night with some lessons learned and knowing that there is work to be done.
First up Waverly handed the Warriors a 40-18 dual loss. There were some Wahoo highlights in the dual. Freshman Caden Smart, wrestling at 132 pounds, got a pin in his first high school match. Returning State Runner-Up Malachi Bordovsky, at 138 pounds, got a pin to start his senior season. Senior Brandon Hasencamp won by pin in what was looking like a very tight, back-and-forth match at 160 pounds.
Next up in the triangular, Ashland-Greenwood came out ahead of Wahoo 46-24. In the Ashland dual sophomore 120-pounder Jet Nuckolls came back from a 7-1 deficit to record a third period pin for the Warriors. Bordovsky got his second pin of the night against the Bluejays, and junior 152-pounder Griffin Lausterer won with a pin as well. Kyan Lasusterer picked up a forfeit win for the Warriors at 195 pounds. In what was one of the most exciting matches of the night, Ashland junior Blaine Christo, a third place State finisher from last season, won a 1-0 match over Wahoo Freshman Smart.
On Saturday the Wahoo wrestlers competed in the Cozad Invite. Cozad is always a tough meet with 16 solid Class B wrestling programs at the Invite. It is a solid mix of programs from eastern and western Nebraska. Hastings ran away with the team race, scoring 261 team points. Last year's Class B State Champions Gering finished second with 167.5 points. Wahoo finished in fourth place, scoring 121.5 points, right behind the host school, third place Cozad at 129 points.
Smart and Bordovsky led the Warriors, with both earning individual championships. Coming into the tournament as a freshman with no criteria, Smart was unseeded but won the 132-lb. weight class in style, collecting three pins and a 16-1 tech fall. Bordovsky won his 138-pound weight class with three pins and a 6-0 decision. Bordovsky finished last season as the Class B Runner-up at 132 pounds with a 45-4 record. He is positioned to end up right near the top of Wahoo’s ‘Career Win’ list and is gunning for several Wahoo wrestling records.
Junior 152-pounder Griffin Lausterer had a good day at Cozad as well. Lausterer won three matches, including two pins to make it into the finals. In the finals he ran into Hastings’ Landon Weidner, a State runner-up last season, and lost 18-3, bringing home the silver medal.
At 220 pounds, junior Dominek Rohleder recorded three pins, going 3-2 on the day and earned a fourth place medal.
Sophomore 126-pounder Isaiah Foster went 3-2 and 170-pound junior Kaleb Broome was 2-2, with both placing 5th place in their weight classes. Senior Kyan Lausterer added a sixth place medal for the Warriors at 195 pounds.
Cozad ran a Junior Varsity meet in another gym while the Varsity meet was going. Wahoo entered several JV wrestlers. Sophomore 220-pound Trevor Beavers was 3-0 with three pins to win a JV Tournament Championship.
