Boys Town Invitational. Anson took 1st @ 170 lbs., Villarreal 4th @ 138 lbs., and White 4th at 152 lbs.

Eight Warrior wresters made the trip to Boys Town on Friday and Saturday to compete in the two-day Boys Town Wrestling Invitational.

Of the eight that started the tournament, six were able to score team points and help Wahoo finish 11th in the field of 16, falling 3.5 points short of finishing in the top 10.

Humberto Villarreal at 138, Kyle White at 152, and Sean Anson at 170 would represent the Warriors in the final round.

Villarreal had a very impressive tournament as he built a 3-2 record, losing two close matches, one of which was in the semifinals to the eventual champion from Omaha Skutt Catholic, Billy Higgins. Villarreal battled back, earning a 15-5 major decision over Blair’s Logan MacDonald in the consolation semi-finals before falling to Cody Everhart of Gretna 13-3.

Kyle White recorded a 4-2-tournament record with a 4th place finish of his own. White lost a tough one to Jake Bressman of Bennington before coming back and racking up 3 straight victories over Devon Wormuth of Blair by 10-1 Major Decision, pinning Caloway Soucek of Gretna, and earning a forfeit by Nathan Teitler of Omaha Gross Catholic. White ended his day with a 10-6 loss to Dontell Hickman-Harison of Omaha Central.

Sean Anson would be the Warriors’ only Champion at 170 pounds, as he grinded his way to a title with two-point victories over Riley Drause of Beatrice (4-2) in the quarterfinals, Alexander Wilson of Omaha Northwest (3-1) in the semifinals, and Gretna’s Jake Olson (3-1) in the Championship final.

“We are happy with how we performed this weekend. This is a tough tournament and to walk away with two 4ths and a 1st place is pretty good,” commented Head Coach Darold Foster. “We have a lot of room for improvement, but we are definitely getting better week to week. I am excited to see where we will be in February.”

Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs    45
High Plains    18    WIN

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team traveled to Clarks, NE on Thurs., Dec. 4, to start the 2014-15 wrestling season with duals against High Plains and Meridian.

The Warriors’ first action came against the Meridian Mustangs in a close 32-36 loss. The Warriors won 3 of the 5 matches wrestled, but were unable to overcome the forfeit points given up in the dual.

Sophomore Cole Krecklow started the Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs wrestlers off at 195 pounds with a third period pin over Cody Lundholm. Krecklow was followed by major decision victories by juniors Jacob Nuckolls at 145 lbs., and Sean Anson at 170. Also scoring team points in the dual was sophomore Caleb Schleiger at 113, and seniors Ivan Sotelo and Kyle White at 132 and 160 lbs.

The Warriors would end the night with a five-match sweep of the High Plains Storm, and a 45-18 final score!

The Warriors recorded pins in 4 of the 5 matches by Ivan Sotelo at 132, Jacob Nuckolls at 145, Tucker Hancock at 152 and Kyle White at 160. They were followed by a 9-5 decision by Sean Anson in the 170-pound weight class. Cole Krecklow, Caleb Schleiger, and Josh Nuckolls all contributed to Wahoo-Cedar Bluffs’ 48 points by earning forfeits in the dual.

“We were very happy with the guys tonight,” commented Head Wrestling Coach Darold Foster. “They all came out and wrestled hard from start to finish, earning bonus points in 9 of the 10 matches wrestled tonight. This is something we have been emphasizing this year. I am looking forward to watching them in the next few weeks.”

The Warriors will continue their 2014-15 campaign Saturday at the Cozad Invitational.
