The Wahoo Warrior wrestling team qualified for the 6th Annual Nebraska School Activities Association Class B State Dual Tournament in Kearney this past Saturday. Wahoo was one of eight Class B teams that qualified. The teams were selected on the basis of District performance. The Warriors placed 2nd in the B-3 District with 8 State Qualifiers to earn their place in the State Duals Tournament. The Wahoo Wrestlers were 2-1 on the day and placed 5th.

Wahoo was the 7th seed in the tournament and wrestled 2nd seed Omaha Skutt in the first round. Wahoo forfeited the 113 and 120-pound weight classes in all three of their State Tournament duals, as they have all season. The Warriors won 4 of the 11 contested matches and lost that first round dual 44-30. Skutt was the eventual State Dual Team Champion, beating Blair in the final 36-33. Omaha Skutt had also won their 20th individual State Team Championship the week earlier. Trey Shanahan (132), Josh Nuckolls (152), Brandon Swahn (220) and Jack Sutton (285) all got wins in the Wahoo-Skutt dual. Skutt forfeited to Sam Kolterman at 195. Peyten Walling (138), Zane Bennett (160) and Tucker Hancock (170) all lost matches to Skutt State Champions.

In the Consolation Semifinal, Wahoo beat Sidney, a team that had placed 4th the previous week at the State Championships, by a score of 48-30. Sebastian Lausterer (106) jumped up a weight class and earned a forfeit at 113. Nuckolls also received a forfeit at 152. Walling, Hancock, Kole Bordovsky (182), Kolterman, Swahn and Sutton all got wins in the dual. Bennett had another extremely tough draw against Sidney, losing to Derek Robb, a 4-time State Champion, who finished his high school career with a four-year record of 201-1. Shanahan also took a loss to a two-time State Champion from Sidney.

The Warriors beat Schuyler in the match for 5th place, 51-21. Seniors Bret Walker (145) and Nuckolls both got wins in their final matches as Warriors in the dual. Kolterman got his 2nd forfeit of the day, and Sutton won his match. Lausterer, Shanahan, Walling, and Bordovsky won their 2nd matches of the day. Jordan Thorson (126) and Bennett also got wins over Schuyler.

The weekend capped off a great season for the Warriors, setting several team and individual career and season records.

The Warriors finished with a Dual Record of 21-5, breaking the Dual Season Win record of 14 Wins set last season. The team won Championship Trophies at Wahoo and High Plains, and won their third consecutive Capital Conference Championship. Wahoo placed 9th at the State Tournament.

Seniors Bret Walker, Josh Nuckolls and Tucker Hancock finished off strong Warrior careers. Walker only wrestled three seasons, but won 73 high school matches and was a State Qualifier as a sophomore. Nuckolls won 44 matches his senior season and 109 in his career, and was a two-time State Qualifier. Nuckolls has committed to continue his wrestling career at Morningside College in Sioux City. Morningside has a traditionally strong NAIA Wrestling program. A three-time State Qualifier, Hancock won 117 career matches to move him into a tie for third place on the All-Time Wahoo Career Wins list. Hancock also placed 6th at the State Meet this season.

Junior State Champions Sam Kolterman and Jack Sutton are stamping their names throughout the Warrior Wrestling record book. Kolterman now holds the record for consecutive wins at 50. Sutton sits one consecutive win behind him at 49. They will both be looking to add to this record next season. Kolterman and Sutton tied to hold the season pin record at 39. This breaks the season pin record set by Kolterman last season. Kolterman holds the career pins record at 101. Sutton broke his own season wins record set last season with 52. Kolterman is at 130 career wins, only one win behind the career win leader of 131, set by Paul Sutton in 2004. Kolterman finished the season 50-0, just the 4th undefeated season record in Wahoo wrestling history.

Next season the Warriors return six State Qualifiers and five more wrestlers who had winning varsity records.

State wrestling: Best friends Kolterman and Sutton go back-to-back for Wahoo (by Ross Miller, Lincoln Journal Star)

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestlers placed 9th with 70 team points in the Class B team race at the Nebraska State Tournament, making it two consecutive years finishing in the top 10 (Wahoo finished in 6th place last season)! Omaha Skutt won the team championship for the 20th time in the last 21 seasons.

Three Wahoo Wrestlers came home with hardware from this season’s State meet, including two juniors that brought home State Championship gold medals.

Sam Kolterman wrestled in one of the most highly anticipated state finals matches of the tournament. Kolterman entered the match undefeated with a 46-0 record, and had gotten a pin in every match he wrestled except one. His opponent, Grady Grice, a sophomore from Grand Island Northwest, was 54-0 and had pinned everyone that he had wrestled. This was the only matchup of two undefeated wrestlers in the Finals. Kolterman did give up the first takedown, only the second takedown he has given up all season, but from there he cruised to a 9-2 victory to earn his Class B 195-pound weight class gold medal!

Kolterman reached a big milestone in the tournament as well, recording his 100th career pin in the semifinals. He also broke his own school season pin record of 35 pins that he set last season. With three pins at the State Tournament, his school record for season pins now stands at 38.

Jack Sutton followed immediately after Kolterman and won the 220-pound Class B State Championship gold medal! Sutton beat a Grand Island Northwest opponent as well, scoring five takedowns to beat Cooper Kiser, who finished the tournament with a 41-9 record, by a score of 11-6.

Sutton adjusted the Wahoo record board as well, breaking his own school record of 45 wins in a season and finishing the tournament with a season record of 49-1.

Senior Tucker Hancock was the Warriors’ third medalist of the tournament. Hancock, 37-12 on the season, won three matches and lost three matches at the State Tournament to earn his spot on the podium and the 6th place medal.

Senior Josh Nuckolls, 41-12 at 152 pounds, and junior Zane Bennett, 13-3 at 160 pounds, both went 2-2 in the State Tournament and were one victory short of earning a medal.

Three sophomores gained valuable experience at the State Tournament with Brandon Swahn, who weighs about 195 pounds but wrestles in the 285 pound weight class, getting a first round consolation win. Swahn did not make the medal round and has a 25-10 record after the tournament. Peyten Walling, 36-16 at 138 pounds, and Kole Bordovsky, 28-17 at 182 pounds, both got two matches at the tournament, but will be looking for their first State Tournament win next season.

The entire Wahoo Wrestling team will take the mat one more time this season when they compete at the Nebraska State Duals Tournament in Kearney next Saturday. The Warriors will dual Omaha Skutt at 9:00 a.m. The Warriors will wrestle either Grand Island Northwest or Sidney in the second round of the double elimination tournament.

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team competed at the B-3 District Wrestling Tournament in Fort Calhoun last weekend and came away with the runner-up plaque, placing second to Blair by a 201.5-176.5 margin. The Warriors qualified 8 individuals for the State Tournament in Omaha at the CenturyLink next week.

The Wahoo Wrestlers’ District performance also qualified them for the NSAA State Duals Tournament in Kearney the following weekend. This is the Warriors’ first appearance at the State Duals. Eight teams make up the Class B field. The dual tournament will be held at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Health and Sports Center on Saturday, February 24. Wahoo goes in as the seventh seed and will wrestle second-seeded Omaha Skutt in a first round dual.

At the District Tournament, the Warrior wrestlers had two individual champions, both qualifying for their third State tournament as juniors. Sam Kolterman, 43-0 at 195 lbs., and Jack Sutton, 45-1 at 220 lbs., both had three first-period pins to claim their gold medals.

Kolterman broke a long-time school record along with his first place finish. Jake Akerson, a Wahoo State Champion in 1999, previously held the school record of 41 consecutive wins, set in 2000. Kolterman now holds that record at 43, and hopes to add to that total the next two weeks and through his senior season next year.

At 152 lbs., senior Josh Nuckolls (39-10) was 3-1 at Districts to place second, earning his second trip to the State Tournament. Junior 160-pounder Zane Bennett (11-1) was also a runner-up, and will wrestle at his third State meet.

Senior Tucker Hancock (34-10) earned his third trip to State, placing third at 170 lbs.

Three sophomores making their first appearance at the State Tournament filled out the squad headed for Omaha. Kole Bordovsky (28-15) at 182 lbs., and Brandon Swahn (24-8) at 285 lbs., both finished third. Peyten Walling (36-14) placed fourth at 138 lbs.

Four more Wahoo wrestlers made it to the Heartbreak Round, the matches they needed to win in order to qualify, but fell one match short. At 126 lbs., junior Jordan Thorson (20-16) was 3-2 in the tournament, and senior Bret Walker (28-20) won one overtime match and lost another at 145 lbs. Freshman Sebastian Lausterer (17-12) at 106 lbs., and Cooper Hancock (14-6) at 132 lbs., just missed the State Tournament as well. All of the Wahoo wrestlers will compete at the State Duals in Kearney.

All eight of the Wahoo State qualifiers will wrestle in the 9:30 a.m. first round on Thursday, Feb. 15. Winners of that round will wrestle a second time in that same round. There are consolation matches starting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, with semifinals and third round consolations at 5:00 p.m. Friday. All medal rounds will be wrestled on Saturday, with the finals at 2:00 p.m.

Congratulations Josh Nuckolls (152 lbs.) on posting your 100th career win @ PLV this weekend! Nuckolls is the 16th Warrior Wrestler (4th this year!) to reach this benchmark!

The Wahoo Wrestling team competed in the Monarch Duals on Saturday at Papillion-La Vista High School. The event hosted 10 teams from Classes A and B. The Warriors went 3-2 in their five duals and had to settle for 5th place. Wahoo has a dual record of 18-4 this season. Hastings defeated Gretna in the Championship Dual 43-30.

The Warriors did hit a couple of big individual milestones at the event: senior 152-pounder Josh Nuckolls became the 16th Wahoo Wrestler, and the fourth this season, to hit 100 career wins! Junior Sam Kolterman recorded his 92nd career pin in the Warriors’ first dual of the day. The 92 pins breaks the Wahoo High School record of 91 career pins set by Josh Akerson in 1998!

In the Omaha World Herald’s most current state wrestling rankings, Hastings was ranked #1 in class B, with Wahoo ranked #2. These two teams drew each other in the first round at Papillion, for an 8:00 a.m. battle that came down to the wire. Wahoo was missing two starters out with illnesses: Sebastion Lausterer (106) and Kole Bordovsky (182). One hundred and sixty-pound senior Eli Zeleny filled in for Bordovsky, going 2-2 on the day. Wahoo also gave up their usual 113 and 120 pound weight classes all day.

Hastings defeated Wahoo 37-34 in that first round dual. Wahoo won six of the ten contested matches in the dual, with Brandon Swahn picking up a win by forfeit at 220 pounds. Nuckolls, Kolterman and Jack Sutton all won by fall in the Hastings match up, with Zane Bennett getting a major decision, and Cooper and Tucker Hancock also posting. Zeleny held off #1-ranked 170-pounder Damen Pape from getting a pin. Peyten Walling also wrestled a number-one-ranked wrestler in Connor Laux at 138 pounds, and fought off the pin. Both wrestlers lost by tech fall, but their efforts saved the Warriors one team point for each match.

In Wahoo’s 2nd round of the day, Wahoo suffered its 4th dual loss of the season, dropping the contest with the Class A, 10th-ranked Papillion-La Vista Monarchs by a 45-36 score. It was a short match, with only eight contested matches. Wahoo gave up the three lowest weight classes, while Papio was open in the three top weight classes. Wahoo won three of the eight matches wrestled, with Nuckolls, Bennett, and Tucker Hancock getting pins. The Monarchs were tough in the lower/middle weights, pinning Jordan Thorson, Cooper Hancock and Trey Shanahan with state-ranked wrestlers.

In the third match of the day, Wahoo cruised to a 66-12 win over Platteview, winning every contested match by pin. Thorson, Cooper Hancock, Walling, Bret Walker, Nuckolls and Kolterman all recorded pins. Platteview was open in six weight classes.

Next up, the Warriors defeated Lincoln Southeast 46-27. Wahoo won eight of ten contested matches, five of those by pin. Cooper Hancock, Walling, Tucker Hancock, Swahn and Sutton all got pins in the dual with Southeast, while Thorson had a 12-4 major decision, and Walker and Bennett won by 6-2 and 6-3 scores.

In the Warriors’ match for 5th place, Wahoo won all nine of the contested matches over Elkhorn for a 54-18 score. Nuckolls had a first-period pin over Elkhorn to record his 100th career win. Walling, Sutton and Swahn also had pins. Zeleny scored five points in the last seconds to come from behind and win 6-4. Cooper Hancock, Bennett and Tucker Hancock also had wins in the dual.

Bennett, Tucker Hancock, Kolterman, Sutton and Swahn all registered 5-0 records for the Dual Meet.

Congratulations Warrior Wrestler Jack Sutton on achieving your 100th career win @ the NCC Tourney! Sutton is the 15th Warrior (2nd junior) in school history, and 3rd this year, to reach this milestone!

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestlers competed in the Nebraska Capital Conference Tournament at Raymond Central on Saturday, turning in a dominating performance. The Warriors scored 204 team points to win the Team Championship, with runner-up Arlington scoring 159.5.

Wahoo entered 11 wrestlers in the tournament, and placed 10 in the finals, with one third place finish. In the semifinal round, the Warriors had seven pins, two technical falls, and a 14-0 major decision. For the final medal count, the wrestlers brought home five gold medals, five silver medals and one bronze. The Warrior Wrestlers have claimed the Capital Conference title for three consecutive seasons.

Josh Nuckolls (152 lbs.) was the first Warrior to earn his gold medal. Nuckolls had a technical fall and a pin in the tournament.

At 160 lbs., Wahoo got junior Zane Bennett into the lineup, after missing the entire football season and the first portion of the wrestling season due to a July knee surgery. Bennett went 3-0 at the meet and won his second Conference Championship. Bennett is a two-time State qualifier with 78 career wins in his first two seasons. Freshman Grant Kolterman has done a great job through the season manning the 160 pound weight in Bennett’s absence, and putting together a 20-15 record.

Kole Bordovsky won a gold medal at 182 lbs., pinning his semifinal opponent, and then won by medical forfeit when his Syracuse opponent appeared to suffer a concussion.

Sam Kolterman won his third Conference Championship, getting first-period pins over his two opponents at 195 lbs.

At 220 pounds, junior Jack Sutton went 3-0 and won his second Conference Championship. Sutton’s finals match, an 8-1 decision over state-ranked Eric Pike of Ashland, was Suttons 100th career win. Sutton becomes Wahoo’s 15th wrestler and second junior to hit the 100 win milestone.

Jordan Thorson (126 lbs.), Cooper Hancock (132 lbs.), Peyten Walling (138 lbs.), Tucker Hancock (170 lbs.) and Brandon Swahn (285 lbs.) all reached the finals, but came away with the silver medals. Walling was pinned in the finals by Syracuse’s Max Hughes, a three-time Class C State Champion. Swahn was also pinned by another Syracuse standout, Caleb Lefferdink, last year’s Class C State Champion at 285.

Bret Walker placed third at the Conference meet after losing a 6-1 match in the semifinals to state-ranked Talon Mues of Arlington. At 106 pounds, Sebastian Lausterer missed the meet due to illness.

On Saturday the Warriors headed down to Nebraska City for the “Rumble in River Country” Dual Tournament. Wahoo competed in five duals, going 4-1 and placing third out of sixteen teams.

Wahoo has been giving up the 113 and 120 pound weight classes all season, and this week Jordan Thorson, the team’s regular 126 pounder, was out with an illness, so in every dual the Warriors spotted the other team 18 team points.

Wahoo started off with a 42-21 win over Seward. The Warriors won 6 of the 9 contested matches in the dual, with 4 of the Warriors wins coming on pins.

The highlight of the second dual of the day, a 51-23 Wahoo win over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, was senior Tucker Hancock winning his 100th career win. Hancock is the 14th wrestler in Wahoo history to hit the 100 win mark. The Warriors won 8 matches in this dual, with 7 by pin.

In Wahoo’s 3rd dual, they defeated Crete 52-26, winning 6 of the 8 contested matches, with 5 of those wins being by fall.

With the 3 dual wins, Wahoo moved on to the Championship pool, where they took their second dual loss of the season to York, 43-36. Wahoo won 6 of the 11 contested matches in the dual, all by pin, but the three open weight classes were too much to overcome. Freshman Grant Kolterman at 160 pounds had a huge pin in the dual, coming from behind and getting a pin with .06 seconds left in the match. Nuckolls also got a pin in his match that was going back and forth at 152 pounds. Jack Sutton weighed in at 220 pounds, but jumped up and wrestled five of his matches at 285. Against York, Sutton moved up to 285 and pinned the Class B, #1-ranked Noah Starfusky. Bret Walker was pinned at 145 pounds by an undefeated, #1-ranked Scott Fulsos, and Walling lost 12-4 to state-ranked Harrison Gocke. Trey Shanahan, Tucker Hancock and Sam Kolterman also had pins in the dual.

In their final dual of the day, the Warriors defeated Fairbury 49-24 to finish in 3rd place at the Nebraska City meet. Wahoo moved their season dual record to 14-2. The 14 wins ties the Wahoo season dual win record, which was set last season. Walling had the big win of the dual for the second time this week. The Wahoo Wrestling team, ranked 4th in Class B, traveled to North Bend last Tuesday to take on the Class C, 3rd ranked Tigers, and came away with a 48-27 victory.

Sophomore Peyten Walling had the biggest win of the night, pinning North Bend senior Brandon Wardman, ranked 5th in the state at 138 lbs. Walling had pinned Wardman the previous weekend at the High Plains Invite, with that being Wardman’s first loss of the year.

Wahoo recorded five more pins in the dual, with Trey Shanahan (132), Josh Nuckolls (152), Grant Kolterman (160), Sam Kolterman (195) and Jack Sutton (220) all getting falls.

North Bend was missing a regular starter at 170 pounds due to illness, so the Tiger coaches adjusted their lineup, moving junior Zach Borer, a 2016 State Champion and 2017 3rd place finisher, up from 160 pounds to wrestle Tucker Hancock at 170 pounds. Borer won the match with a pin. North Bend also got wins from state-ranked Dalton Mueller over Kole Bordovsky, and state-ranked Jacob Ray over Bret Walker. Wahoo got forfeit wins at 106 pounds and 285 pounds from Sebastion Lausterer and Brandon Swahn.

Warrior Wrestling: 2018 High Plains Invitational Champions!

The Warrior Wrestlers competed in the 49th annual High Plains Invite this weekend, and brought home the Championship Trophy, scoring 174.5 team points!

Wahoo has been going to this tournament since its inception, with this being their first High Plains/Clarks Tournament Championship since 1977. Twenty teams competed at the meet, with Battle Creek claiming the runner-up trophy with 157 points, and North Bend coming in third with 151.5 points.

Junior 195-pounder Sam Kolterman had a big meet all around. He won the weight class, going 6-0, with 6 pins over the two days. His first win of the meet was his 100th career win, making him only the 13th Wahoo wrestler ever to hit that milestone, and the first Wahoo junior to win 100 matches. To cap the tournament off, Kolterman was voted Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament, for the weight classes 152-285 pounds. Kolterman is 25-0 and ranked #1 in Class B, and #1 in the all-class power rankings at 195 pounds.

Jack Sutton, a junior at 220 pounds with a 26-1 season record, also brought a home a gold medal. Sutton was 6-0 at the meet and defeated a Class A, 3rd-ranked wrestler from Creighton Prep in the semifinal, and a Class B, 4th-ranked wrestler from Schuyler in the finals.

Senior Josh Nuckolls (25-5) at 152 lbs., and sophomore 182-pounder Kole Bordovsky (21-7) both reached the finals and finished as runners-up. Nuckolls lost his finals match in overtime to an undefeated, #1-ranked wrestler from Palmer.

Tucker Hancock (19-5), a senior at 170 lbs., finished in 3rd place. Hancock’s only loss of the tournament was a 4-3 decision to an undefeated wrestler from North Bend.

Wahoo entered two wrestlers at 132 lbs., with sophomore Trey Shanahan placing 5th and freshman Cooper Hancock finishing in 6th place. Shanahan won the 5th place match over Hancock by a medical forfeit.

Sophomore Peyten Walling (138 pounds) and senior Bret Walker (145 pounds) both finished in 5th place. Walker had a busy two days with a full weight class, getting no byes and finishing 6-2 in the tournament.

Freshman Grant Kolterman at 160 pounds and sophomore Brandon Swahn at 285 pounds both came in at 7th place. Freshman Sebastion Lausterer was 2-2, but missed placing at 106, losing one of his matches to an undefeated, retuning State Champion from High Plains. Eli Zeleny was Wahoo’s second entry at 160 pounds, but missed the medal round.

Wahoo is open at the 113 and 120-pound weight classes, so they gave up 12 team points on forfeits every dual, but the wrestlers did a nice job of recording pins throughout the day to make up for those lost points. The Warriors had nine falls against Ralston.

Next up, Wahoo defeated a Wayne team, which had several open weight classes, by a score of 60-13. The Blue Devils had 6 open weight classes, with Wahoo winning 5 of the 7 contested matches, all by fall.

In their third dual, the Warriors faced a traditionally tough Fairbury team that had a full squad. The Warriors came away with a 45-24 win. It looked like it could be a tough match-up at 195 lbs., with undefeated, #1-ranked Sam Kolterman wrestling Fairbury’s #4-ranked Zach Reikofsky. Kolterman dominated with a first period pin. Jack Sutton jumped up from his usual 220-lb. weight class and pinned football all-state lineman Trent Grizzle at 285 lbs.

The Wahoo Wrestlers lost their first dual meet of the season in the final match up of the pool play. The Warriors dropped a close dual to Bellevue East 39-35. Wahoo won 7 of the 12 contested matches, but the 12 points given up with the Warriors’ two open weight classes was too much to overcome.

Wahoo finished second in their pool, so was matched with the runner up of the other tournament’s pool for the medal round to compete for third place. Omaha Skutt had lost to Hastings and finished second in that pool.

In the Warriors’ first-ever dual meet with Class B’s #1-ranked Omaha Skutt, Wahoo wrestled tough and came out with a 50-22 victory to claim third place for the day! The Warriors had tough performances from several wrestlers that came up short as far as win/loss, but they kept the Warriors in the dual by not giving up pin points.

Warrior senior Bret Walker lost a 4-2 match with Skutt’s Stone Mendez, and Peyten Walling fought hard with Skutt’s Nicholas Stoltenberg. Both Skutt wrestlers earned medals at last year’s State meet. Kole Bordovsky lost an 8-7 match to Skutt State qualifier Eli Jansen. Brandon Swahn had the exciting match of the dual, blasting Skutt’s 285-lb. Blake Brummer for a .10 second pin. Also recording pins over Skutt were freshmen Cooper Hancock and Grant Kolterman, Josh Nuckolls and Sutton. Freshman Sebastian Lausterer recorded a 15-0 tech fall. Wahoo won 7 of the 10 contested matches in the dual.

Individually, Nuckolls, Sam Kolterman, Swahn and Sutton finished 5-0 on the day. Swahn and Sutton both weighed in at 220 lbs. and switched back and forth wrestling the 285-lb. spot. Trey Shanahan wrestled one of the duals at 132 lbs., and was 1-0 on the day.

Lausterer, Tucker Hancock and Bordovsky all were 4-1 at Bennington. Walling and Walker both went 3-2, while Jordan Thorson and Grant Kolterman were 2-3.

Sam Kolterman and Swahn were chosen for the “All Tournament Team” for the 195 and 220-lb. weight classes.

The Warriors gave up two weight classes, giving up 12 team points at 113 and 120 pounds. Sam Kolterman and Brandon Swahn both had their hands raised with no opponent at 195 and 220 pounds.

The dual started at 220 pounds, so Jack Sutton was the first contested match of the night at 285 pounds. Sutton pinned his Nebraska City opponent in 29 seconds.

At 106 pounds, Sebastian Lausterer dropped a 12-0 major decision to the Pioneers.

Wahoo got rolling after that with three straight pins from Jordan Thorson at 126, Cooper Hancock at 132, and Trey Shanahan at 138 lbs.

Bret Walker won a hard-fought 3-1 match at 145 lbs. Josh Nuckolls lost an 8-3 match at 152 lbs.

Freshman 160-pounder Grant Kolterman came from behind to pin a tough Nebraska City upperclassman in the third period. Tucker Hancock and Kole Bordovsky recorded first period pins at 170 and 182 to finish out the matches.

Peyten Walling missed the dual after splitting his forehead open in practice and getting stitches. Walling is expected back for the Warriors’ next outing at the Bennington Dual Tournament on December 30.

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team won their home invite on Saturday in dominating fashion. It is the second year in a row that the Warriors have kept their Championship trophy at home.

The Warriors scored 141.5 team points to outdistance runner-up Waverly, with 104 team points. There were 15 teams entered, with a mix of schools from Classes, A, B, C, and D.

Wahoo had five wrestlers in the finals, two finishing with gold medals. Sam Kolterman was the 195-pound champion with three pins on the day. Kolterman stayed undefeated with a 13-0 record and recorded a 30-second pin over Steven Kerr from Lincoln Pius X in the finals. Jack Sutton moved his season record to 14-1 with a second period pin over Caleb Cast of Centennial in the 220-pound championship match.

Jordan Thorson (126), Josh Nuckolls (152), and Tucker Hancock (170) were all three Wahoo Invite Runners-up. Thorson and Hancock were 2-1 on the day, while Nuckolls got an extra match and finished 3-1.

Wahoo got a welcome addition to its line up, with freshman Cooper Hancock making it to the 132-pound weight class for the first time, and filling a spot that had been open. Hancock got off to a nice start, placing 3rd and finishing with a 2-1 record. Peyten Walling was 4-1 on the day at 138 lbs., and earned a 3rd place medal also.

Grant Kolterman was 2-2 in the tournament and placed 4th at 160 lbs.

Freshman 106-pound Sebastion Lausterer and 145-pound senior Bret Walker both won matches and scored team points, but just missed the medal round.

The Warrior Wrestlers started off a busy week with a Tuesday night trip to West Point for a triangular meet with Blair and West Point-Beemer.

The Wahoo team faced Blair in the first dual of the night and came away with a 42-33 victory over the Bears. Blair had won the team championship at the Boys Town Invite, with the Warriors finishing third just three days earlier, so the dual victory was a very nice win for the Wahoo Wrestlers. Blair scored 18 of their 33 team points with forfeits in three weight classes where Wahoo was open. Wahoo won 7 of the 11 contested matches in the dual.

Against West Point-Beemer, the Warriors came away with a 60-21 dual victory. Again the Warriors gave up 18 team points on forfeits, and the Cadets forfeited two weight classes. Wahoo won eight of the nine matches wrestled in the dual.

Sebastion Lausterer at 106 received a forfeit against West Point and lost a 7-3 match against Blair. Wahoo forfeited at the 113, 120, and 132-lb. weight classes in both duals. Jordan Thorson won by pin over West Point-Beemer at 126 pounds, and was pinned by Walker Moore, a two-time State Runner-up from Blair. Senior 145-pounder Bret Walker dropped a pair of close matches in the duals.

At 170 pounds Tucker Hancock wrestled Dalton Lewis of Blair, the same wrestler that had beaten Hancock in the Boys Town final a few days earlier. Lewis came out on top again by a score of 12-8. Hancock recorded a pin over West Point-Beemer.

Five of the Wahoo wrestlers recorded two pins on the night. Peyten Walling (138), Josh Nuckolls (152), Grant Kolterman (160), Kole Bordovsky (182), and Sam Kolterman (195) all pinned both of their opponents.

The Wahoo Coaches did a little tweaking of their line up in the upper weights against Blair, and it worked out to Wahoo’s benefit. Jack Sutton moved up a weight class and recorded a pin over Blair’s 285-pounder, and Brandon Swahn moved into the lineup at 220 and pinned his Blair opponent. Sutton received a forfeit against West Point-Beemer at 220, and Coby Ricketts assumed his regular spot at 285 and recorded a pin in that dual.

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling Team competed in a tough, two-day, 16-team tournament at Boys Town this past weekend and finished in 3rd place. Blair won the team championship with 195.5 points, Schuyler was the runner-up with 169.5, and Wahoo rounded out the top 3 with 154 team points.

The Warriors are still working at getting their line up to full strength. They entered 10 wrestlers out of the 14 weight classes. Out of those 10 wrestlers, they brought home 8 medals. Four of the Warriors reached the finals, with three earning Gold Medals.

152-lb. senior Josh Nuckolls was the first to reach the top of the podium. In the finals match, Nuckolls earned a 7-4 decision over Caden Yrkoski of Schuyler. Yrkoski owned two wins over Nuckolls last season, so it was a very nice win for the Wahoo senior. Nuckolls has started his season off with a 9-2 record.

In the 195 final, it was a battle of two very strong, outstanding athletes. Junior Sam Kolterman (8-0 and an all-state linebacker) wrestled Nick Foss (7-1 and an Iowa all-state running back from Harlan, who rushed for over 2,000 yards last season). Kolterman broke a 1-1 tie, scoring a takedown late in the third period to win the gold medal with a 3-2 score. The two wrestlers looked like a matched set, and Kolterman commented, “I felt like I was wrestling myself.”

At 220 pounds, junior Jack Sutton improved his season record to 9-1, and defeated a returning 220-pound State 4th place finisher, Jesus Maganda from Schuyler, in the finals match 7-6.

Tucker Hancock (7-1) wrestled in the 170 pound final and suffered his first loss of the season 7-6 to Dalton Lewis of Blair, to earn the silver medal. It was a very close match between two seniors with a lot of experience. They will see each other multiple times through the season, including a dual this coming week and at the District Tournament.

Peyton Walling, a sophomore at 138 pounds, improved his season record to 9-3 by going 4-1 at Boys Town and placing 3rd. Walling avenged an earlier round loss to Miguel Roman of Schuyler, by winning 6-5 in the 3rd place match.

Sophomore Kole Bordovsky, wrestling at 182 pounds, is 9-3 on the season and was 4-2 at Boys Town, finishing in 4th place  with two losses to Alex Byington of Elkhorn.

Junior Jordan Thorson at 126 pounds and Freshman Grant Kolterman at 160 pounds both brought home 6th place medals. Both wrestlers are 5-5 on the season and were 2-3 on the day at Boys Town.

At 145 pounds, senior Bret Walker (5-4) was 2-2 in the tournament and just missed the medal round when Robert Lauby of Elkhorn scored a last-second reversal in the 3rd round consolation match.

Junior Coby Ricketts, 3-4 on the season, rounded out the Warrior lineup at 285 pounds for the Boys Town Invite, but missed the medal stand. Ricketts actually weighs in at just a little over 220 pounds.

The Wahoo Wrestling team headed west for the wrestling season opening weekend at the Cozad Invite. There were 15 Class B schools at the meet, which makes for a rugged, long one day tournament.

The Warriors had a good day and came home with the Runner-up Trophy! Lexington won the meet with 157.5 team points, and Wahoo finished in second place with 146 points. Alliance, Sidney, and Plattsmouth rounded out the top five.

Senior Tucker Hancock and junior Sam Kolterman led the way, with both winning 3 matches on their way to earning Championships. Hancock beat Riley Kopf of Lexington 7-5 to earn the 170-pound gold medal. Kolterman started the season as Huskermat’s number 1 ranked 195 pounder in Class B, and pinned his way through the tournament to reach the top of the podium. In the finals Kolterman pinned Cody Ybarra from Gering.

Kole Bordovsky, Wahoo’s sophomore 182 pounder, also reached the finals, but settled for second place, finishing the day 2-1. Bordovsky lost in the finals 13-0 to Preston Melroy from Holdredge. Melroy is the #1 ranked wrestler in Class B at 182 pounds.

Jack Sutton, junior, entered the meet as the top-ranked 220 pounder in Class B, but settled for 3rd place after losing to 3rd ranked Bronson Titus from Holdrege in the semi-finals 6-5. Sutton was 3-1 on the day.

Sophomore Peyten Walling was 3-2 on the day at 138 lbs. and placed 4th. Josh Nuckolls, a senior at 152 pounds, also was 3-2 for the day and brought home a 5th place medal.

At 106 pounds, freshman Sebastian Lausterer was the victim of an illegal slam in the consolation wrestle backs. The tournament trainer would not allow Lausterer to finish the match or wrestle any more matches that day. He won the match in which he was slammed by disqualification of his opponent, and then forfeited two more matches and received a 6th place medal.

Every Wahoo wrestler entered won matches and contributed to the team score, including, 126-pound junior Jordan Thorson, 145-pound senior Bret Walker, 160-pound freshman Grant Kolterman, and 285-pound junior Coby Ricketts.

Warrior senior Tucker Hancock wrestles his way to an 11-4 decision victory over Justin Union of Ashland-Greenwood at the Nov. 30 season-opening triangular at Ashland.
Wahoo opened their season with blowout wins over both AGHS and Ft. Calhoun.

-------------------------

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team opened their season on Thursday, November 30, at Ashland in a triangular dual meet against two NCC Conference opponents.

First up, the Warriors wrestled against Fort Calhoun and earned a 61-18 victory. Wahoo is going to be giving up the 113 and 120 pound weight classes this season, so 12 of Fort Calhoun’s points came as forfeits for the empty weight classes.

In Wahoo’s second dual, the Warriors defeated Ashland-Greenwood 60-12.

At 106 lbs., Wahoo freshman Sebastian Lausterer got his high school career off to a great start. Lausterer pinned both of his opponents in the first period, with a 1:51 pin over Fort Calhoun and a 1:03 pin over Ashland-Greenwood.

Wahoo junior 126 pounder Jordan Thorson also got off to a fast start with two quick pins. Thorson wrestled a total of one minute in both matches.

At 132 pounds, Wahoo sophomore Rolando Sotelo wrestled in his very first live competition. Sotelo was pinned in both of his matches, but gained valuable experience for improving as the season goes on.

Neither Fort Calhoun nor Ashland-Greenwood had 138 pound wrestlers, so Wahoo sophomore Peyton Walling received two wins by forfeit.

The forfeits continued with 145-pound senior Bret Walker receiving a forfeit against Fort Calhoun. Walker won an 8-1 decision against Ashland. Walker was a State Qualifier in 2016.

At 152 pounds, returning State qualifier Josh Nuckolls, a senior, pinned his Fort Calhoun opponent, and received a forfeit against Ashland-Greenwood.

Another freshman, Grant Kolterman, had a very nice debut, wrestling at 160 pounds. Kolterman won both of his matches by pin.

At 170 pounds, senior Tucker Hancock, a two time State qualifier, won an 11-4 decision over Fort Calhoun and received a forfeit against Ashland Greenwood.

Wahoo’s 182-pound sophomore Kole Bordovsky missed almost his entire freshman season with a broken thumb, but got his first varsity season off to a great start. Bordovsky pinned his Ashland-Greenwood opponent and had an 11-3 major decision over Fort Calhoun.

195-pound junior Sam Kolterman, two-time state qualifier and last year’s State runner-up at 182 pounds, received a forfeit against Fort Calhoun, and had a first period pin over Ashland-Greenwood.

Jack Sutton at 220 lbs., also a junior and two-time state qualifier and a State 4th place finisher from last season, had a pin over Fort Calhoun and a 9-4 win over Ashland-Greenwood.

Junior Coby Ricketts, wrestling at the 285 pound weight for the second year, looks much improved over last season and recorded two first period pins in the duals.

The Warriors will be missing junior Zane Bennett from the lineup for the first part of the season. Bennett is a two-time State qualifier, with 78 career wins. He is rehabbing from a summer time ACL knee surgery and is hopeful to be back on the mat in January.
