The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team sent seven wrestlers to the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Warriors had their best State Tournament in many years, coming home with an individual State Championship, a State Runner-up, a 4th place medal, and a 6th place team finish in Class B.
The Warrior highlight of the weekend was senior, 220-pound Cole Krecklow’s Championship run through the tournament. In the first round, Krecklow pinned Michael Mitchell of Boys Town, and his next match was an 8-2 win over Bronson Titus of Holdrege. In the Semifinals, Kreckow defeated Tyson Bruce of Bennington, 9-4, to earn his first trip to the Finals. In the Championship match, Krecklow defeated Kaleb Taylor of McCook 5-3 to earn his Gold Medal, and finish his season with a 44-1 record.
Krecklow went from winning five matches as a freshman, to earning 6th and 4th place state medals the next two seasons. His State Championship is the first for the Warrior Wrestling program since Jake Akerson won the Gold in 1999. Krecklow won 107 matches in high school to place him 7th on the list of All-Time Wahoo Career Win Leaders.
Sophomore Sam Kolterman also had a very impressive tournament, going 3-1 over the three days, and making it into the 182-pound Finals to earn a silver medal on Saturday afternoon. Kolterman defeated Patrick Ondrak of Fairbury in the first round by tech fall. He then beat Zeke Derr of Cozad 5-0. In the Semifinals Kolterman avenged an early season loss, pinning Eric Langan of McCook. Kolterman ran into one of the top wrestlers in the State in the Championship match, losing to undefeated Senior Salem Harsh of Scottsbluff 10-0. Kolterman ended the year with a 43-7 record and a school record of 35 pins.
At 195 pounds, sophomore Jack Sutton earned a 4th place state medal. He had pins in the first two rounds over Carter Hunzeker of Falls City, and Ethan Mullen of Hastings Adams Central. In the Semifinals Sutton lost to Trevor Walton of Boys Town for the second time this season, 13-5. Sutton came back to beat Ethan Sherman of Crete, to earn a spot in the match for 3rd place, where he lost 4-0 to Danny Thompson of Omaha Skutt. For the season, Sutton was 45-4, with the 45 wins setting a new school record! He also set a new school record with 205 takedowns for the year.
Zane Bennett, at 152 pounds, was 2-2 in the tournament. He pinned Jacob Adams of Beatrice in the first round, and then lost a very close 2-1 match to Logan MacDonald of Bennington in the Quarterfinals. Bennett then pinned Lane Applegarth of Alliance to advance to the State Tournament’s version of the Heartbreak Round, where the winners go on to Saturday and are guaranteed a medal, and the match losers are done. Bennett lost the match with Dylan James of West Point/Beemer 3-0, to finish his sophomore season with a 40-8 record.
Junior Tucker Hancock (170 lbs.) lost his first match of the tournament to Bryant Wilson of Alliance by pin. He then came back and defeated Gavin Lawson of D.C. West 3-2, before losing a hard-fought match with Kobe Everson of Gretna 6-5. Hancock wraps up the season at 30-12.
At 145 pounds, junior Josh Nuckolls lost his first round match with Cole Huss of Gretna 10-0, to drop into the wrestlebacks and lose a close match with Zachary Hurlbert of Holdrege 5-2, finishing the season with a 34-16 record.
Ryan Walker, a senior at 160 pounds, lost two very close, down-to-the-wire matches. In the first round he lost 3-1 to Damian Green of Fairbury, then in the first round of wrestlebacks, Walker’s match with Duncan Rogers of McCook was looking like it would go into overtime, when Walker was thrown in the last seconds and ended up losing 8-3. Walker ended the year at 37-16.
The Class B Tournament was won by Omaha Skutt with 184 team points, Gretna was the Runner-Up with 171. Wahoo came in at 6th place with 69.5 points. The 6th place finish is Wahoo’s best State finish since 1979, when the Warriors were the Class B State Runners Up.

The Wahoo Wrestling team qualified seven wrestlers for the 2017 State Wrestling Tournament in Omaha last weekend, and brought home the B-1 District Runner-Up plaque from the 12-team tournament in Aurora!
Omaha Skutt won the tournament with 240 team points. Wahoo finished in second place with 149.5 points, one point ahead of Blair, who placed third. The Warriors had four District Champions and three Third Place finishers, going 7-0 in the medal round.
Sophomore Zane Bennett (152 lbs.) was the first Warrior to secure his ticket to State, beating Garrett Cornwell of Boone Central by a 10-0 major decision in the semifinals. Bennett got his third pin of the tournament in the finals, over Matthew Harvey of Norris, to win the Championship! He will take a 38-6 record to Omaha, as he makes his second trip to the State Tournament.
Sam Kolterman (182-lb. sophomore) won his Championship in a very tough match over Gavin Eason of Norris, who came into the match ranked ahead of Kolterman, with a 39-3 record. Kolterman was behind by a point when he caught the Norris wrestler and pinned him late in the third period. Kolterman, also making his second trip to State, is 40-6 on the season.
Jack Sutton (195 lbs.), Wahoo's third sophomore making his second trip to State, heads to Omaha with a 42-2 record. Sutton was Wahoo's version of a "Cardiac Kid." In the semifinals he pinned Omaha Skutt's Danny Thompson in the fourth period of overtime with .02 left in the match. The match lasted 8:28. Then in the finals, Sutton needed three overtime periods to beat state-ranked Ethan Sherman of Crete 7-5, and claim his gold medal.
At 220 lbs., Cole Krecklow (40-1) won the Championship over a familiar opponent, beating Wyatt Gutzmer of Columbus Scotus 3-2. It was the fifth meeting over two seasons between the two seniors, with Krecklow winning four of those matches. Krecklow is making his third trip to the State Tournament after finishing sixth as a sophomore and fourth last season. He has been ranked #1 in the weight class most of the season.
All three of the Warriors that finished third had won their way to the semifinals and then lost, forcing them to drop into the wrestle-backs and wrestle in the "Heartbreak Round." This round is one of the most emotionally charged situations in high school athletics. Winners in this round qualify for the State Tournament, while the losers in the round are done for the season. Emotions are raw, with outbreaks of jow and sorrow seen everywhere from competitors, family and coaches.
Junior Bret Walker (126 lbs.), a returning State Qualifier, was the first Warrior Wrestler to wrestle in the Heartbreak Round. Walker was pinned by Gage Perry of Columbus Lakeview and finished his season at 26-19.
Next up, Josh Nuckolls (145 lbs.), a junior with a 34-14 record, lost in the semis to Drew Schaad of Columbus Lakeview, 5-2. He earned his first trip to State by pinning Ethan Dozler of Boon Central. Nuckolls followed that with a 9-7 overtime victory over Dalton Lewis of Blair, to place third.
At 160 lbs., senior Ryan Walker (37-14) was in control of his semifinal match until the last seconds, when he was thrown by Dillon Muchmore of Columbus Scotus to lose 5-3. Walker beat Zach Sorenson of Blair 5-2 in the Heartbreak match. He then got his third pin of the tournament over Trey Schafer of Boone Central to place third. This is Walker's first time qualifying for State.
Junior Tucker Hancock (29-10) at 170 lbs. was Wahoo's final qualifier. Hancock lost in the semifinals to undefeated, top-seed Curt Randall of Omaha Skutt, but came back to defeat Colton Johnson of Crete, 4-0, and then Norris's Travis reed, 6-2, for place third. Hancock was a State Qualifier as a freshman, but missed the trip last season.
Sophomore Braedenn Olson and freshman Peyten Walling both won matches in the tournament, scoring a combined critical five team points toward the team trophy, but missed out on qualifying for the State Tournament. Sophomores Jordan Thorson and Coby Ricketts, and freshman Trey Shanahan, also competed for the Warriors as well.
Wahoo wrestles in Class B, and will wrestle two rounds on Thursday, Feb. 16 at the CenturyLink, starting at 4:00 p.m. There are two wrestle-back rounds on Friday starting at 12:30 p.m., with the Semifinals at 5:00 p.m. Consolation and third-sixth place medal rounds start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, with the Finals starting at 3:00 p.m.

Wahoo 50 | Bishop Neumann 12 WIN
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team made the short trip over to Bishop Neumann for a Tuesday night Dual.
Neumann did not field wrestlers in five weight classes, and the Warriors won 6 of the 9 matches wrestled, finishing the night with a 50-12 victory.
Wahoo won the biggest match of the night, which pitted two of the top 220 pounders in the State. Cole Krecklow, a senior with two State medals to his credit, moved his record to 37-1 on the season when he beat Neumann’s Evan Welsh, a junior and also a two-time state medalist, by a score of 7-5. It was Krecklow’s 100th win of his career! He is the 12th Warrior Wrestler to reach the 100-win mark, and the first for Head Coach Darold Foster.
Josh Nuckolls also won a key match for the Warriors at 145 lbs., avenging a loss from the Wahoo Invitational over Neumann senior Ian Ingwerson, 12-7. Wahoo’s Zane Bennett followed with a 2nd period pin over Colby Osmera at 152 lbs.
Warrior Ryan Walker lost an overtime match to Andrew Hart at 160 lbs., for his second close loss of the season to the Neumann senior.
Wahoo then went on a roll, winning the final four matches. Tucker Hancock (170) won over Tristan Cloyd 5-3. Sam Kolterman (182) pinned Luke Fairbanks in 3:30.
Jack Sutton, 39-2 at 195 lbs., broke his second WHS school record in less than a week with his 25-10 tech fall over Conrad Sanders. Last week he broke the school takedown record set by his brother, Paul Sutton, in 2002. With this win he broke the school record of 38 season wins, which was held in a tie between Neal Bowman set in 2007 and Zane Bennett from last season.
The Grand Finale of the night was Krecklow’s win over Welsh at 220 lbs.
The Warriors dropped matches at 132 and 138 lbs. with freshmen Trey Shanahan losing by tech fall to Max Hohn, and Peyten Walling dropping a 14-5 match to Luke Haberman.
The Warriors finished their regular season with a dual record of 14-3. The 14 victories are the most in Wahoo High School wrestling history. The Wahoo wrestling team has this weekend off, and will head to Aurora to compete in the B1 District Tournament on February 10-11.

A DAY OF RECORDS! Warrior Wrestling took the runner-up spot at the Jan. 28 PLV Monarch Dual Tourney, pushing Wahoo to its first 13-win season in program history!
In addition, new school records were set by both Jack Sutton (take downs in a season) and Sam Kolterman (pins in a season)!

The Warrior Wrestlers had a big day at Papillion-LaVista High School, wrestling in the Monarch Dual Tournament last Saturday. They competed in five duals, winning the first four to come out of their pool as Pool Champions. Then, in the overall Championship Dual, the Warriors were pitted against Gretna. Gretna is ranked as the Number #1 Dual Team in Class “B” and is arguably one of the top teams in Nebraska in all classes.
To start the day, Wahoo wrestled Papillion-LaVista South and won that Dual 39-27. The highlight of that dual was a coaching strategy move of having Cole Krecklow move up to 285 lbs., and inserting Coby Ricketts into the lineup at 220 lbs., with Ricketts getting a first period pin.
The second dual was with Omaha Bryan, which the Warriors won 51-27.
Wahoo then defeated tournament hosts Papillion-LaVista 42-39. Papillion-LaVista had several wrestlers in the middle to upper weights that looked capable of challenging the Warrior wrestlers, but Papio chose to forfeit several of those weight classes instead of putting those wrestlers on the mat.
The Warriors won their fourth and final match of the pool over Omaha Gross, 66-3. This win sent them to the Overall Championship Final with Gretna.
Wahoo put up a good fight against the Dragons, winning 4 matches, 2 by pin, but lost the dual 50-18. The Warrior Wrestlers came home with the Runner-Up Plaque from the 10-team tournament.
After the Gretna Dual, Wahoo has a 13-3 dual record 2016-2017, marking the first time Wahoo has ever recorded 13 dual wins in a single season.
Wahoo had some very strong individual performances, and two long-time school season records were broken at the meet.
Sam Kolterman (182-lb. sophomore) moved his record to 36-6 with 5 pins on the day, putting his season total at 31 pins. This breaks the previous school record of 30 pins, set by Josh Akerson back in 1998.
Senior Cole Krecklow (36-1), ranked #1 in Class B at 220 lbs., was 5-0 on the day.
Sophomore 195-lber Jack Sutton (38-2), ranked #1 in Class B, was 4-1, losing a tough, 3-2 match with Class B #2 Grant Bruner, of Gretna. Sutton also had a highlight to the day, breaking the School Takedown Record of 178 takedowns in a season, set by his older brother Paul Sutton in 2002.
Freshman Peyten Walling (19-17) was 4-1 in the duals at 138 lbs. Sophomore 152-pounder Zane Bennett (33-6) was 4-1, with his lone loss to Class B #3 ranked Cody Everhart from Gretna. Junior Tucker Hancock (25-11) was 4-1 at 170 lbs. Sophomore Coby Ricketts (4-4), who competes at 285 lbs., but actually weighs about 210, was 3-1 with 2 pins at the Dual Tournament. Senior Ryan Walker (33-12) was 3-2 at 160 lbs., with losses to a Class B #2 State-ranked Lance Jarrett from Gretna and Class A #4-ranked Conner Willey from Papillion-LaVista South.
The Warriors also picked up important wins throughout the duals from Jordan Thorson (20-19) at 120 lbs., 126-pounder Bret Walker (23-17), Trey Shanahan (14-15) at 132 lbs., and 145-pounder Josh Nuckolls (30-13).
CONGRATULATIONS sophomore wrestlers Jack Sutton (left) on setting a new school record for number of take downs in a season (179), and Sam Kolterman with his new school record of most pins in a season (31)! Sutton's record was previously set by his brother Paul in 2002, and Kolterman broke Josh Akerson's record from 1998.

Congratulations Warrior Wrestling: 2017 NCC Champions!
Wahoo's 5 individual championships lead the Warriors to an 8.5-point victory over NCC runner-up Syracuse.
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team traveled to Fort Calhoun last Saturday and came home with their second straight Nebraska Capital Conference Championship.
Wahoo finished out in front with 178.5 team points. Syracuse took second place with 170 points.
The highlight of the day was crowning five of the Warriors as individual Champions. Wahoo entered 11 wrestlers out of the 14 weight classes, missing 3 starters due to injury and illness, but managed to earn 10 medals.
Wahoo had 6 wrestlers in a row, from 152 lbs. through 220 lbs., in the Championship Finals Round. Sophomore Zane Bennett (29-5) at 152 lbs. was the first Warrior Champion, with a first period pin over Garrett Walla of Raymond Central in the finals. Bennett had 2 pins and a tech fall in the tournament.
Ryan Walker (30-10), 160-lb. senior, followed with a big win in the finals over Class C #2-ranked Mitch McWilliams of Syracuse. McWilliams entered the match with a 31-3 record and Walker came away with a 13-7 victory.
At 170 lbs., junior Tucker Hancock (21-10) provided a lot of drama on the day with 2 overtime wins. Hancock had a first round pin, with an overtime match to get to the finals, and then another overtime win over Gavin Lawson of D.C. West to claim his Championship.
182-lb. sophomore Sam Kolterman (31-6) faced Trevor Nichelson of Ashland in the finals for their third match of the year. The first two match ups ended with first period pins by Nichelson, but Kolterman stuck with the 2-time State Champion much better this time. Kolterman lost the match 6-3, but it was a very competitive, hard-fought contest.
Sophomore Jack Sutton (34-1) won the 195-lb. weight class with 2 pins in the early rounds and a 20-7 major decision over Austin Jensen of Syracuse in the Finals.
Senior 220-pounder Cole Krecklow (31-1) won his second Conference Championship with a semifinal pin and then a 9-3 decision over Erik Pike of Ashland.
Sophomore Jordan Thorson (19-15 at 120 lbs.), junior Bret Walker (21-14 at 126 lbs.) and junior Josh Nuckolls (28-10 at 145 lbs.) all earned 3rd place medals. Walker notched 3 pins in the tournament. Freshman Trey Shanahan (12-12 at 132 lbs.) earned a 4th place medal. Sophomore Braedenn Olson (7-11) wrestled 2 matches at 106 lbs., but missed placing in the tournament.

Wahoo drops championship dual to Fairbury

Coach's weekend summary:
The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team had a big weekend of wrestling January 13-14.
The weekend was started off by winning the Syracuse Pin Tournament for the second year in a row. The tournament is held on a Friday night and is unique in the fact that the only team points scored are for individual pins. It was a tight team race with the home town Syracuse Rockets, but the Warriors held on to score 33 points for the Championship, with Syracuse scoring 32. Louisville came in at 3rd with 25 points. Nine teams were entered.
Individually, the Warriors had 6 wrestlers make the finals, with 3 of them taking 1st place. Tucker Hancock (18-8) was the first Champion of the night, earning a gold medal at 170 lbs., and notching one pin. Jack Sutton (31-1) also won a Championship with 3 pins at 195 lbs. Cole Krecklow (29-1) won the Warriors’ third Championship at 220 lbs. with 2 pins.
Bret Walker (18-13) and Zane Bennett (26-5) placed 2nd at 126 lbs. and 152 lbs. respectively. Sam Kolterman (29-5) was in a 5-man round robin at 182 lbs., so benefited from an extra match, and scored 3 pins for the tournament, but lost to Trevor Nichelson of Ashland, to place 2nd.
Jordan Thorson (17-14 at 120 lbs.) placed 3rd, but had a big night for the team score, with 3 pins on the night. Peyten Walling (15-16 at 138 lbs.), Josh Nuckolls (25-9 at 145 lbs.) and Ryan Walker (27-10 at 160 lbs.) also all placed 3rd. Walling had 2 pins, and Nuckolls 1 pin, while Walker had 2 pins and scored team points for receiving a medical forfeit in the medal round.
Trey Shanahan (10-10 at 132 lbs.) placed 4th and had one pin for the day.
The team then traveled 18 miles southeast to compete in Nebraska City’s “Rumble on the River” 12-team dual tournament on Saturday.
The Warriors wrestled in 5 dual meets through the day, going 3-2 for the meet, while losing their first dual meet of the season.
Wahoo was short two starters for the dual tournament, and was open at 106 and 113 all day, giving up 12 team points for every dual. Wahoo started off the day strong, defeating Southwest Iowa (Sidney) by a score of 66-18. Next up was Waverly, with the Warriors coming away with 45-23 win.
The Warriors then took their first dual loss of the season, losing to York 48-34. Counting Wahoo’s two forfeited weight classes, the Warriors were down 36-0 at one point before mounting a strong comeback, but could not finish the deal.
The loss dropped Wahoo into the Silver Pool for the medal round, where they won their first dual with Clarinda, Iowa 51-29, to advance to the Championship match in that pool, to wrestle Fairbury.
In looking at the Fairbury line up, it was obvious that several of Wahoo’s top competitors were matched up with Fairbury’s top wrestlers. Fairbury won several of those tough matchups and came away defeating the Warriors 39-32 in a very competitive dual.
The Warriors came out of the Dual tournament with a 9-2 season dual record. Individually Nuckolls, Kolterman, Sutton, and Kreklow all finished the day with 5-0 records. Bennett was 4-1, recording 4 pins. Ryan Walker was also 4-1.

Warrior Wrestling took Runner-Up of 22 teams at the 2017 High Plains Tournament, held Jan. 6-7 at Central Community College in Columbus!
Sam Kolterman earned the "Most Pins in the Shortest Amount of Time Award" (7 in 9:45!),
and Cole Krecklow was presented the "Tournament's Outstanding Wrestler" award at the 2017 High Plains Tournament!

The Wahoo Wrestlers added to their trophy collection with their performance at the 2017 High Plains Invite! The meet was held at the Central Community College Campus in Columbus on January 6-7. Valentine, who was added to the tournament after a late December storm forced the Badgers to cancel their home tournament, ran away with the team title, scoring 262 team points. Wahoo scored 161 points and came home with the Runner-Up trophy from the field of 22 teams.
Valentine, who is ranked Number 1 in Class C, took control of the team race from the start. Throughout both days the race for 2nd place was extremely tight between 5-6 teams, with the Warriors in the hunt after each of the rounds.
Coming into the Championship and final round, David City was leading Wahoo by a score of 150-145. The Scouts and the Warriors each had 4 wrestlers in the finals with a head-to-head match up at the 195 lb. weight class. Wahoo moved ahead of David City 161-158 for 2nd place, by winning 3 of their 4 finals matches, 2 of them by pins, and winning the head-to-head matchup at 195.
Sam Kolterman (182) won the first Championship for the Warriors with a 2nd period pin over Peyton Stevens of High Plains. Stevens is ranked 2nd in Class D at 182 lbs. Kolterman, 21-4 on the season, earned some hardware of his own, winning a plaque for the “Most Pins in the Shortest Amount of Time” at the tournament, by recording 7 pins in 9 minutes, 45 seconds.
Jack Sutton (195) won the head-to-head matchup over David City’s Ryan Worm, the 2nd ranked 195-pounder in Class C. To earn his Championship, Sutton needed a takedown in overtime for the win, and improved his record to 23-1.
Cole Krecklow, 21-1, wrestled an opponent with whom he has quite a bit of experience in the 220 lb. finals. Krecklow was 2-1 against Wyatt Gutzmer from Columbus Scotus last season, with the one loss coming in the match for 3rd place at the State Tournament. All of the Class B state rankings this season at 220 lbs. have listed Gutzmer at #1 and Krecklow in the second spot. Krecklow proved the ratings wrong for now, by pinning Gutzmer early in the second period, for the High Plains Championship. Kecklow was rewarded for his effort by being voted “Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler” in the upper weight classes by the opposing Coaches.
Zane Bennett, 21-3, was the 4th finalist for the Warriors at 152 lbs. The match between Bennett and Caleb Long of Valentine, ranked 5th in Class C, was scoreless until the last seconds, when Long was awarded 2 quick back points as time expired, forcing Bennett to settle for 2nd place. Bennett, 7-1 in the tournament, had a big win in the semifinals, defeating Class D’s #1-ranked 152 pounder from Howells-Dodge, Miles Kulhanek, 6-5.
At 120 pounds, sophomore Jordan Thorson, 12-10, had his best tournament of the year, earning a 4th place medal and going 4-2 over the 2 days.
Ryan Walker, 20-8, placed 5th at 160 lbs. and was 5-2 at the meet. Bret Walker, 13-10, placed 7th at 126 lbs.
Tucker Hancock (170) did not place at the meet, but provided as much excitement as anyone. In his only match of the tournament, at the end of a hard-fought 2nd period, Hancock executed a perfect throw, bringing his opponent to his back. On the way down Hancock managed to somehow open a 2-inch gash in his own forehead, which bled profusely. The match was stopped immediately and Hancock needed 15 stitches to close the wound. He was done for the weekend, but plans to be back to compete for the Warriors next match.
Sophomore Braedenn Olson, 106 lbs., did not place, but scored his first pin of the season and is improving every meet. Trey Shanahan, Peyten Walling, and Josh Nuckolls all won matches at the meet, but did not make it to the medal rounds.

2016 Wahoo Invitational Champions!
The Warrior Wrestling team hosted its annual Wahoo Invitational on Thursday, after postponing the meet, which was scheduled for Saturday, due to weather.
The Warriors had a big day, finishing as Team Champions after outscoring runner-up Nebraska City 186 -164. Lincoln Pius X finished 3rd out of the field of 12 teams.
Wahoo had 6 wrestlers reach the finals, with 5 of them earning indivual championships.
Bonus point wins and especially pins were huge in the team scoring for the Warriors as they continued their trend of being a strong pinning team. Wahoo had 22 pins in the tournament compared to runner-up Nebraska City’s 16 pins.
Bret Walker was the first Warrior to win gold, earning his 3rd pin of the day over Nick McCarthy of Waverly in overtime at 126 lbs. Walker goes into the break with an 11-5 record.
Zane Bennett (14-2) was 3-0 in the tournament with 3 pins after his win over Edwin Baptista of Friend in the 152 -lb. final.
Sam Kolterman (14-4) was also 3-0 on the day with 3 pins, defeating Hayden Dinert for the 182-lb. championship.
At 195 lbs., Jack Sutton (15-1) benefited from the luck of the draw in his 10-man weight class, picking up an extra match and going 4-0 with 4 pins, winning the tournament’s “Most Pins” award, along with his championship over Andrew Harrah from Nebraska City.
Cole Krecklow (15-1) had a first round bye, but was 2-0 on the day, defeating Nebraska City’s Jake Kreifel in the 220-lb. final, 4-1.
Tucker Hancock (14-5), at 170 lbs., was the sixth Warrior in the finals, but dropped his match to Jake Prochaska of Centennial 8-4 and finished with a 2nd place medal.
113-pounder Jersten Zeleny (6-4), Jordan Thorson (9-8) @ 120 lbs., Josh Nuckolls (15-6) @ 145 lbs., and Ryan Walker (15-6) at 160 lbs. all reached the consolation finals. Walker won his match for a third place medal, while the other 3 finished the tournament in 4th place.
Freshman Trey Shanahan (132) and Peyten Walling (138) both won matches and scored team points in the tournament, but did not make the medal stand.

The Warrior Wrestling team stayed undefeated last Tuesday, moving their Dual record to 6-0.
Wahoo began the night with a shutout, defeating West Point-Beemer 78-0.
The match started at 220 lbs., with Cole Krecklow getting a pin. Sophomore Coby Andresen-Ricketts also pinned his opponent, getting his first varsity win at 285 lbs. Braedden Olson and Jersten Zeleny received forfeits at 106 and 113.
Jordan Thorson (120 lbs.) went three periods of overtime, but came out on top 7-6. Then Wahoo went on a roll, pinning four West Point-Beemer wrestlers in a row. Bret Walker (126), Trey Shanahan (132), Peyten Walling (138), and Josh Nuckolls (145) posted those pins.
Zane Bennett (152) had a tough matchup with West Point-Beemer’s Dylan James. James was a State Qualifier last year who won 36 matches, but Bennett came out on top 7-0.
Wahoo then finished off the dual with Ryan Walker (160), Tucker Hancock (170), Sam Kolterman (182), and Jack Sutton (195) all pinning their opponents.
Next up was Blair, who had finished ahead of Wahoo for the runner-up trophy at the Boys Town Invitational the previous Saturday.
The dual started at 106 lbs. Blair is very experienced in the lower weights, and after the 138 lb. weight class was wrestled, the Warriors were down by a score of 34-0. Down but not out!
Josh Nuckolls (145) defeated Dalton Lewis, a retuning State Qualifier with a 9-1 record, by a score of 12-9, in a very intense, physical match. Bennett, Walker, and Hancock followed with three pins. At 182 lbs., Blair was Open. Regular 182 lb. starter Sam Kolterman stayed behind the chairs as Wahoo’s Head Coach Darold Foster sent out freshman junior varsity wrestler Evan Divis to get his hand raised and collect 6 more team points.
Kolterman then went out at 195 lbs. against Blair’s Carter Anderson, a 9-1 senior and a State Qualifier ranked 5th in Class “B.” Kolterman was on a mission and pinned the Blair Wrestler in .56 seconds!
Sutton then had a 0.58 pin at 220 to gain the Warriors’ first lead in the dual, 39-34.
Krecklow then went out against Blair’s 285-lb. Cory Harper. Harper had a 60-lb. weight advantage on Krecklow, and is a returning State Qualifier, currently ranked 4th in Class “B” with a 9-1 record. Krecklow knew all he needed to do was keep from getting pinned and the Warriors would win the dual, but he would not be satisfied with that. Krecklow wrestled a very smart match, with the score 1-1 at the end of regulation, then getting the takedown in overtime to win the match 3-1. That finished the dual with the Warriors overcoming a 34-point deficit to take the win over Blair 42-34.

Warrior Wrestling takes 3rd place at Boys Town Invite

Warrior Wrestling took 3rd place at the Dec. 9-10 Boys Town Invitational.
Warrior sophomore Sam Kolterman received the "Most Pins in the Shortest Amount of Time" award at the Dec. 9-10 Boys Town Invitational.
The Warriors took 3rd place at the rigorous competition of 15 Class A and B teams.
For the second straight week the Warrior Wrestling team competed in a very tough invitational with 15 teams entered. There was a very good mix of Class A and B schools, plus a tough team from Harlan, Iowa. Traditional powerhouse Tekamah-Herman was the lone Class C school entered.
Wahoo came through the tournament in 3rd place with 153 team points. Omaha Skutt Catholic blew away the field, winning the tournament with 241 points, and Blair finished as runners-up with 181.5.
The Warriors entered 10 wrestlers and came away with 8 medals, all in the top 4. Everyone entered won matches and scored team points.
Five wrestlers made it into Friday night’s semifinal round, but it was a tough round for the Warriors, with only Jack Sutton (195) making it through to the finals.
The rest of the Warriors were forced to come back and wrestle through the wrestle backs on Saturday morning. Seven of the wrestlers made it into the consolation semifinals and had a huge round, going undefeated with seven pins. Wahoo had dropped into the middle of the pack in the team race, but that round vaulted them right back into the hunt for second place.
With those wins the Warriors entered the medal round with seven of the wrestlers fighting for a third place medal, and one in the finals.
Sutton dropped his championship match 11-6 to Trevor Walton from Boys Town. Walton was the 182 lb. runner-up at last year’s State Tournament.
Zane Bennett placed 3rd and finished 3-1 at 152 lbs., with a pin in his medal round match over Kylan Byars from Omaha Northwest.
Sam Kolterman (182) was 4-1 on the day, and placed 3rd with a pin over Michael Hernandez of Schuyler. Kolterman received a plaque for “Most Pins in the Shortest Amount of Time” at the tournament, and was the only wrestler entered to record 4 pins over the two days.
Kole Krecklow at 220 lbs. placed 3rd with a pin over Tyson Bruce of Bennington, and finished 3-1 for the tournament.
Peyten Walling finished 4-2 with 3 pins, Josh Nuckolls and Ryan Walker also finished 4-2, with Tucker Hancock was 3-2, and all received 4th place medals.
Jordan Thorson and Bret Walker both finished short of the medal round, but both won matches and scored team points.

Warrior Wrestling takes down North Bend Central & Yutan at Dec. 6 home triangular
Wahoo prepares for Fri/Sat Boys Town Invite

Wahoo met North Bend in the first Dual of the Triangular last Tuesday night, expecting a very tough opponent. North Bend is ranked #2 in Class “C” in the Nebraska Wrestling Coaches Association, State Dual Meet Rankings. The Warriors came away with the dual victory: 47-22.
The Warriors’ Sam Kolterman started off the meet with a big 11-3 major decision over returning North Bend State Qualifier Brock Ray at 182 lbs. Jack Sutton (195 lbs.) and Cole Krecklow (220 lbs.) followed with pins. Wahoo also got a pin from Josh Nuckolls at 145 lbs. The Warriors got 2 more victories with Zane Bennett’s major decision 15-2 at 152 lbs., and a 6-1 win at 138 from Peyten Walling.
Wahoo received three forfeits in the dual with Braedenn Olson (106 lbs.), Jordan Thorson (120 lbs.) and Bret Walker (126 lbs.) each getting their hands raised and earning 6 team points.
Ryan Walker (160 lbs.) drew the tough match of the night, losing to North Bend’s returning State Champion Zach Borer. Jersten Zeleny (113 lbs.), Tucker Hancock (170 lbs.), and Coby Andresen-Ricketts (285 lbs.) also dropped matches to North Bend.
The Warrior vs. Yutan dual was over quickly, with Yutan giving up 6 weight classes as forfeits, and ended up with the Warriors winning the dual by a 78-3 score.
The Warriors had 6 pins in the dual, with Jordan Thorson, Bret Walker, Peyten Walling, Zane Bennett, Jack Sutton and Cole Krecklow each scoring 6 team points. Sutton and Krecklow both jumped up a weight class for the Yutan match and got their pins at 220 and 285. Freshman Walling had the big win of the night, wrestling Yutan senior and State Qualifier Ty Burkle to a tie in regulation, then getting a takedown straight into a pin during overtime. Josh Nuckolls also scored 6 team points, when his Yutan opponent was injured during the match, and was unable to finish.
The Warriors collected forfeit wins with Braedenn Olson (106), Jersten Zeleny (113), Trey Shanahan (132), Kole Bordovsky (170), Tucker Hancock (182), and Sam Kolterman (195).
Ryan Walker, for the second match of the night, wrestled the opponent’s best wrestler and came away with a loss to Yutan’s Levi Kult.

Warrior Wrestling tied Plattsmouth for the Championship at the Dec. 3 Cozad Invite!
Leading the charge were Gold Medalists Cole Krecklow (220 lbs.) and Jack Sutton (195 lbs.)!
The Wahoo wrestling team traveled to Cozad for the December 3 Season opening weekend, and came home with some hardware!
Cozad is a big, tough, one-day tournament with 14 teams entered. All of the teams are Class B schools from all over Nebraska. It is a very good mix of good wrestling schools with teams from western and eastern parts of the state.
The Warriors went toe-to-toe with Plattsmouth all day, swapping the lead several times. Plattsmouth was the Class B State Runner up last year, and won last year’s NSAA State Dual Tournament Championship.
Wahoo & Plattsmouth both finished with 178 team points.
Wahoo entered 10 wrestlers in the Varsity tournament, choosing to enter some of their younger team members in the JV tournament going on in another Cozad gym. Plattsmouth entered a full team with 14 wrestlers. A huge key to the Warriors’ point total was the fact that Wahoo had 27 pins in the tournament to 13 pins for Plattsmouth.
Wahoo was led by two individual Champions. Jack Sutton, a sophomore, won the 195-lb. Championship, pinning Jaret Matson from McCook in the Finals. Matson is a senior who was a 6th place finisher at last year’s State Tournament. Sutton was 3-0, with 2 pins and a major decision.
Cole Krecklow, a senior, also brought home Gold, winning the 220-lb. weight class. Krecklow, 3-0 in the tournament with 2 pins, also beat a McCook wrestler in the finals, with a 12-7 win over returning State 5th Placer, Kaleb Taylor.
Sophomore Zane Bennett, at 152 lbs., was also in the finals, but drew an extremely tough opponent in Derek Robb from Sidney. Robb, a junior, has won two State Championships and has an 88-1 high school record. Bennett kept the match close in the first period at 2-1, but was pinned in the 2nd period, finishing as runner-up with a 2-1 record and 2 pins. Bennett had a big win in the semis, pinning a returning state placer from Lexington in the first period.
Josh Nuckolls, 145-lb. junior, also finished 3rd with a 4-1 record. Through some strange circumstances in his bracket, Nuckolls had his hand raised twice for forfeits, and had a pin.
Tucker Hancock, 170-lb. junior, also had a big day. He went 4-1 with 2 major decisions and a pin to finish 3rd. The 3rd place win was very dramatic, ending with a 6-2 victory in 3 overtime periods.
Senior 160-pounder Ryan Walker had to settle for a 4th place medal, despite finishing with a 4-1 record and 3 pins. He was the victim of a rule that says a high school wrestler can only wrestle 5 matches in one day, and the way the bracket worked out, his match for 3rd would have been his 6th match, so he was forced to forfeit.
Sam Kolterman, 182-lb. sophomore, also got a 4th place medal and finished the day at 2-2.
Junior Bret Walker got a 5th place medal in the 126-lb. weight class, while freshman Peyten Walling was a 6th place finisher at 138 lbs.

The Wahoo Warrior Wrestling team started off the season Thursday, December 1 with two big victories over NCC Conference foes at a home triangular.
First up for the night was Fort Calhoun. The Warriors came away with a 54-18 dual win. Wahoo recorded pins in 7 of the 12 matches wrestled. Bret Walker, a junior at 126 lbs., Zane Bennett, a 152-lb. sophomore, Ryan Walker, 160-lb. senior, Tucker Hancock, a junior at 170 lbs., Sam Kolterman, 182-lb. sophomore, Jack Sutton, 195-lb. sophomore, and Cole Krecklow, a 220-lb. senior, all recorded wins by Fall against the Pioneers.
Wahoo freshman Jersten Zeleny at 113 lbs and Trey Shanahan at 132 lbs. also got their hands raised for forfeits and earned 6 team points each. Braedenn Olson, sophomore at 106 lbs., wrestling his first match since elementary school, was pinned late in his match, but will help the Warriors at the lightest weight class as the season progresses.
Two of the more exciting matches of the dual were Warrior losses against very experienced Ft. Calhoun wrestlers. Freshman Peyten Walling at 138 lbs. wrestled senior Dylan Hartline, a retuning State Qualifier who was 37-4 last year. Walling lost the match 18-7, but pushed the senior through the whole match and was coming on strong at the end. Our 145-lb. junior Josh Nuckolls wrestled Omaha Skutt transfer Jeff Heinz. Heinz has a Class B State Championship plus State medals for 3rd and 4th place. Nuckolls lost by Tech Fall, but like Walling pushed his opponent the whole way.
Against Ashland the Warriors faced a team that was hit hard by graduation last year, and is in the process of rebuilding. Ashland gave up forfeits at six weight classes, and the Warriors came away with a 68-6 win.
Jordan Thorson, a sophomore at 120 lbs., beat Ashland’s Delkin Grell 10-5. Thorson had split with Grell last season.
Walling won by Tech Fall, while Nuckolls, Bennett, Sutton, and Krecklow all pinned their opponents.
The most anticipated match of the night was Sam Kolterman vs. senior Trevor Nichelson of Ashand at 182 lbs. Nichelsen is a 2-time State Champion, and a 3-time All State football player. Kolterman came out hard, shooting the first takedown and looking like he might score. Nichelson showed his experience, though, muscling Kolterman up into an upper body lock and executing a perfect Greco Roman type throw, with Kolterman landing on his back and getting pinned in 1:08.

Kolterman was one of six 2015-2016 State qualifiers, five of whom return for what's sure to be an exciting 2016-2017 season!
New season to start with 5 returning State Qualifiers

This season’s Warrior Wrestling team has a lot to look forward to, and has an opportunity to accomplish some high goals.
Last season, the wrestlers were Capital Conference Champions, and 10-3 in duals. The 10 wins set a new dual season win record for the program. This season the Warriors will look to add more hardware to the trophy case, and have another strong dual team.
Leading the team will be two seniors that are extremely hard workers and excellent role models.
Cole Krecklow will be working for his 3rd State Medal, after placing 6th as a sophomore and 4th last year. Krecklow finished 36-6 last season, and will wrestle at 220 lbs. for the second year.
Ryan Walker, the other senior leader, won 25 matches last year, was 1st team All-Area, and had a tough loss in the Heartbreak Round at Districts to narrowly miss qualifying for State. Walker plans to hold down the 160 lb. weight class. Both Krecklow and Walker were important players on the Warrior Football team this year, but Walker gets special mention for recording 127 tackles, just missing the school’s tackle record.
The Warriors have four other returning State Qualifiers besides Krecklow.
Sophomores Zane Bennett and Sam Kolterman each won a match at State, and won 38 and 37 matches respectively last season. Bennett plans to start the year at 152 lbs. and Kolterman is looking to wrestle at 182 lbs.
Junior Bret Walker plans to wrestle 120 or 126 lbs., while sophomore Jack Sutton is returning to the 195 lb. class. Both wrestled at last year’s State Tournament.
Other returning Varsity wrestlers are Jordan Thorson, Eli Zeleny, Josh Nuckolls, and Tucker Hancock. Nuckolls won 19 matches last season, and Hancock won 26. Both wrestlers made a serious push at being State Qualifiers, but fell a match short.
The freshmen class coming in is strong, and has several wrestlers that have traveled and wrestled on several all-star type teams. These freshmen should compete for varsity spots, and are well prepared to wrestle at the varsity level.
The Warriors are looking to fill all 14 weight classes, at least for dual meets, for the first time in many years. It will be a great feeling for the team to go into these meets not forfeiting any weight classes. Some of these younger wrestlers filling weights may jump back and forth to JV for bigger meets.
Wahoo had several wrestlers competing through the spring and summer months, both around Nebraska, and traveling to other parts of the country in bigger meets. This extra experience could help these wrestlers move to higher levels.
The Warrior Wrestling team, while still fairly young, is experienced, and should be athletic and tough. They will be a very fun team to watch and follow! Go Warriors!!
