Warriors Easily Dominate Seward 42-8

The Wahoo freshmen and sophomore football team capped off their perfect 4-0 season with a 42-8 victory over the Seward Bluejays on October 27 at Seward High School. 

Although outmanned, with only 17 Warriors making the trip to Seward, Wahoo displayed the physicality and tenacity that allowed them to dominate their opponents throughout the season.

The Warriors began on defense facing a sizeable offensive line for the Bluejays. The Warriors were lead on the defensive front by Jake Subbert, Tyson Jelinek, Tyler Urban, and Brock Partridge. 

The Bluejays employed their Maryland I formation and were able to chip away at the Warrior defense on their first few plays. After making some defensive adjustments, the Warriors quickly sent the Bluejays packing, forcing them to punt. The line backing core of Spencer Wright, Max Wonka, and Seth Stewart were able to pressure the Seward punter, forcing a short punt, giving the Warriors the ball near midfield. 

The Warrior offense, lead by Josh Proctor, quickly established their running game with Cameron Walling leading the way for Seth Stewart on the first two plays of the series. Stewart was able to gain 6 yards and 12 yards behind the line of Brock Partridge, Tyson Jelinek, Sean Redding, Tyler Urban, and Jake Subbert. The Warriors moved the ball quickly down the field with the opening drive capped off by a 15-yard run by Seth Stewart to put the Warriors up 6-0, with a failed 2 pt. conversion. 

The Warrior defense tightened up their ranks and forced the Bluejays into four consecutive three-and-outs, with Tyson Jelinek, Max Wonka, Jake Subbert, Seth Stewart, and Kyle Kander all recording tackles for losses on those series. 

Wahoo quickly turned the Bluejays’ lack of offense into scoring opportunities. With the Bluejay defense putting eight defenders in the box to stop Seth Stewart, the Warriors went to the air, with Josh Proctor finding Casey Brown down the Warrior sideline for a 35-yard strike putting the Warriors up 12-0. 

The Warriors’ lone low point of the night was their inability to convert on any of their 2-point conversions for the game. 

With the Bluejays reeling from the quick strike, the Warriors ran an onside kick executed perfectly by Cameron Walling, bouncing the kick off a Seward defender, and recovered by the Warriors on the 50-yard line. The Warriors wasted little time finding the end zone again, with Josh Proctor hitting Micheal Kersten, in stride, down the seam for a 40-yard touchdown to increase the Warrior lead to 18-0. 

The Warriors were able to get the ball back after a short punt by the Bluejays, with Seth Stewart again gashing the Bluejay defense for 10 and 12-yard gains, behind Tyson Jelinek and Brock Partridge.

With the Bluejays bringing pressure up the middle to stop the run, Josh Proctor went to the air again for his third touchdown strike of the game, finding Josh Discher on a 30-yard crossing route, pushing the lead to 24-0 for the Warriors. 

In the second half, the Warriors got back to their ground game, with Cameron Walling once again leading the way for Seth Stewart, who ran the ball on nine consecutive touches for 70 yards, culminating with a 3-yard plunge into the end zone to give the Warriors a 30-0 lead. 

The Bluejays were able to get on the scoreboard, using a trick play. Seward was able to run a toss pass, getting a receiver behind the Warrior secondary to give them their only score of the game, making the score 30-8 after the Bluejay 2-point conversion.

The Warriors quickly regrouped, with Josh Proctor going to the air for his fourth passing touchdown of the night, finding Randy Else streaking through the middle of the Bluejay secondary for a 45-yard touchdown, giving the Warriors a 36-8 lead. 

On the final drive of the night for the Warriors, Wahoo broke the will of the Bluejays, pounding the ball on the ground, with Spencer Wright capping off the scoring explosion with an athletic 55-yard run from scrimmage, pulling away from the Bluejay defenders, pushing the final score to 42-8.

Warriors to Finish Season October 27 at Seward 

The Wahoo freshmen and sophomore football team extended their winning streak to 3-0 on the season with a 36-0 victory over Ashland on October 16 at Ashland High School. 

The Warriors struggled early offensively, with several miscues on the center and quarterback exchanges, turning the ball over to Ashland as the Warriors were heading into the end zone. Wahoo’s defense, lead by Cole Barry, Christian Hohl, Tyson Jelinek, Lucas McAtee, Josh Discher, Michael Kersten, Justin Lewandowski, Jake Subbert, and Derek Virgl, quickly turned the negative into a positive, with Max Wonka blitzing through the Bluejay offensive line and sacking the quarterback for a safety on their first play of the series, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

After a short Bluejay kickoff, the Warriors were able to regain their offensive focus, with Christian Hohl handing the ball to Seth Stewart, who cut through the Bluejay defenders for consecutive 15 and 20-yard gains. Cameron Walling took an inside handoff on veer on the third run of the game for a 22-yard gain, giving the Warriors a first and goal to go. Cameron Walling lead the way for the Warriors’ second score of the day as Seth Stewart followed Walling into the end zone for a 10-yard score. The Warriors were without a kicker for the game, but were able to convert the 2-point conversion with Seth Stewart rumbling 3 yards to give the Warriors a 10-0 lead. 

In the second quarter, Seth Stewart carried the offense for the Warriors, accounting for over 135 yards of offense in the second quarter alone, running around the Bluejay defenders on a toss play, giving the Warriors a 16-0 lead after a failed 2-point conversion.

Late in the second quarter, the Warriors went to the air with Christian Hohl finding Casey Brown down the Warrior sideline for a 40-yard touchdown on their next offensive possession. The 2-point conversion failed, giving the Warriors a 22-0 lead. 

The Warrior defense had their way with the Bluejay offense all afternoon, allowing only one first down the entire game, and giving the Warriors the ball back with 14 seconds left in the half. With the Bluejays running a prevent defense, the Warriors called up a screen pass from their own 25 yard line to Seth Stewart, who was able to rumble 75 yards through the Ashland defense, assisted by a convoy of Wahoo blockers to give the Warriors a 30-0 lead after a successful 2-point conversion by Spencer Wright on a toss play from 3 yards out. 

The Warriors finished their scoring at the end of the third quarter with a brilliant 30-yard strike from Josh Proctor to Josh Discher, who was able to get behind the Bluejay defense, giving the Warriors their final 36-0 margin of victory over Ashland. The freshmen and sophomore team plays their final game of the season at Seward on October 27 at 6:00 p.m.

JV Warriors Travel to North Bend October 6

The Wahoo freshmen and sophomore football team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 35-0 victory over Mt. Michael on October 2 at Mt. Michael High School. 

The Warriors started the game slowly, trading three and outs with Mt. Michael on the first series. Wahoo’s defense, lead by Cole Barry, Christian Hohl, Tyson Jelinek, Josh Jansa, and Cameron Nadrchal, applied constant pressure to the Knights’ offense, never surrendering a first down the entire afternoon. 

The Warriors finally got on the scoreboard with a 35-yard run by Seth Stewart, running through the tackle of a Knight defender, and sprinting to the end zone to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead, after the PAT conversion from Ethan Harders.

Wahoo was able to turn up the defensive pressure on the next possession, with Cole Barry recording back-to-back tackles for a loss, as the Knight offense sputtered once again. The Warriors were able to get the ball on a short field and wasted no time moving the ball on the Knight defense.

Sean Lindgren ran the veer to perfection for a 15-yard gain on first down. After a three-yard run by Cameron Walling, Seth Stewart was able to put the Warriors on the scoreboard again with a 20-yard touchdown run down the Knight sideline, giving the Warriors a 14-0 lead going into halftime after the PAT conversion by Ethan Harders. 

In the second half, the Warriors’ defense wasted no time getting the ball back from the Knights, as Dyllan Kellner intercepted a wayward pass from the Mt. Michael quarterback, giving the Warriors the ball on the Warrior 30 yard line. The Warriors, who had trouble with the blitzing Knights in the first half, made some line adjustments and regained their offensive swagger quickly, with Sean Lindgren hitting Josh Discher across the middle of the field for a 65-yard scoring strike, putting the Warriors up 21-0 after another successful PAT conversion by Ethan Harders.

After another Knight three and out, with the clock ticking down on the 3^rd quarter, Cole Barry made the most of his opportunity with a 50-yard run off a trap play as the clock expired, giving the Warriors a 28-0 lead, heading into the fourth quarter. 

The Warriors capped off their scoring with another position change. With Josh Proctor, who normally plays receiver, lining up at quarterback and Christian Hohl, normally a quarterback, lining up at receiver, the Warriors ran a bubble screen to Hohl, who outraced the Knight defenders down the sideline after a great downfield block from Michael Kersten, to finish the scoring for the Warriors, giving them the 35-0 victory over the Class B Mt. Michael Knights. 

The Warriors’ next game is a JV game against the North Bend Tigers at North Bend on October 6 at 6:00 p.m.

Warriors Travel to Mt. Michael October 2

The Wahoo freshman and sophomore football team opened their season on September 18 against Class A Elkhorn High School at Wahoo High School. 

Although outnumbered, the Warriors were determined to set the tone for the evening by playing a physical “smash-mouth” brand of football from the opening kickoff. The Warriors opened on defense and quickly established themselves on the defensive front, with Tyson Jelinek, Colter Mattson, Tyler Urban, and Josh Jansa, containing the running game of the Antlers.

Christian Hohl, Cole Barry, Lucas McAtee, and Sean Lindgren constantly punished the Antler quarterbacks and running backs with big hits each time that Elkhorn possessed the ball. Justin Lewandowski, Josh Discher, Randy Else, Trenton Raymond, and Josh Proctor secured the secondary for the Warriors. 

The Antlers were able to gain a few yards on their first series, but the Warriors tightened up their defense near midfield. The opening drive for the Antlers ended when Christian Hohl and Tyson Jelinek combined to corral the Elkhorn running back on a toss play, forcing the Antlers to punt. 

After a solid punt return from Justin Lewandowski behind the blocking of Lucas McAtee and Colter Mattson, the Warriors continued where they left off on Monday night, establishing their running game behind the much improved offensive line of Tyson Jelinek, Cole Barry, Cameron Nadrchal, Colter Mattson, and Tyler Urban. Sean Lindgren ran the offense for the Warriors, using the option game to move the ball quickly to the Antler 40 yard line. 

The offensive line worked hard to move the larger Antler defenders, creating seams for Lucas McAtee to deliver his “bone jarring” blocks for Trenton Raymond, as the Warriors moved quickly down the field on the reeling Antlers. The Warriors wasted no time near the goal line handing the ball to Trenton Raymond for the 6 yard plunge into the end zone behind Cameron Nadrchal and Colter Mattson, to put the Warriors on the board first. Christian Hohl converted the PAT attempt to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead. 

The Warrior defense applied even more pressure on the second series with consecutive tackles for loss by Cole Barry and Colter Mattson. On the Antlers’ third play from scrimmage, a blitzing Christian Hohl forced the Antler quarterback to release the ball quickly as he was hit, allowing Josh Discher and Josh Proctor to break up the Antler pass attempt. 

The Warriors forced their first three and out of the night, with several more to come throughout the evening, as the defense continued to flex its muscles throughout the evening.

Wahoo opened its second offensive series with the same tenacity as the first, grinding out runs from Sean Lindgren, Lucas McAtee, and Trenton Raymond to cross midfield into Antler territory. The Antler defense put eight men in the box to try and slow the running game, but the Warriors’ offensive line once again came up big. Tyson Jelinek, Colter Mattson, Tyler Urban, Josh Jansa, along with Lucas McAtee, were able to give Sean Lindgren the time he needed to complete a 45-yard strike to Josh Discher down the Warrior sideline for a touchdown. Christian Hohl, once again, was able to convert the PAT to give the Warriors a 14-0 lead. 

The Warrior defense forced their second three and out of the game when Colter Mattson was able to shoot through the defensive line securing the Antler ball carrier, as Lucas McAtee delivered a knock out shot finishing the runner on first down. The Antlers attempted a rollout pass that fell incomplete for their second down attempt of the drive.

With the time winding down in the first half, the Warrior defense pressured the Antlers as they attempted a rollout pass with just under 1:30 minutes left in the half, with Tyson Jelinek and Cole Barry harassing the quarterback, once again, allowing the Warrior secondary of Randy Else and Justin Lewandowski to break up the Antlers’ first down attempt. 

Justin Lewandowski took the Antler punt and raced down the sideline, giving the Warriors the field position needed for one last attempt to score before half.  The Warriors spread the field and hit Seth Stewart on a sideline route for a 35-yard gain, but the clock was still running, with the Warriors out of time outs. With 0:35 seconds remaining, the Warrior offense sprinted to the line as Sean Lindgren masterfully spiked the ball to stop the clock, giving the Warriors a last chance at the end zone. 

Using the Warriors’ main passing threat Justin Lewandowski as a decoy, Sean Lindgren baited the Antler defense into double covering the speedy Lewandowski, as Lindgren waited for Josh Discher to separate from his defender on the opposite side of the field. Lindgren delivered a ball down the Warrior sideline that was a bit under thrown, but Josh Discher was able to out leap the Antler corner and scamper down the field for his second touchdown score of the night. After a failed PAT attempt, the Warriors went into halftime with a 20-0 lead.

The opening series of the second half for the Warriors was a mirror image of the second scoring drive of the night with the Warriors using the legs of Sean Lindgren, Lucas McAtee, Trenton Raymond, and Seth Stewart to carry the Warriors down the field into Antler territory. On a third and three, Sean Lindgren once again found his favorite target of the night, Josh Discher, on a 40-yard post route, caught between three defenders, in stride for his third touchdown reception of the game. The PAT conversion was once again blocked, but the Warriors were able to extend the lead to 26-0. 

The Warriors were able to use their improved depth to keep the Antlers at bay for most of the second half, with the defensive front of Kyle Kander, Sean Redding, Cameron Nadrchal, and Brock Partridge plugging the middle, while Seth Stewart, Max Wonka, Cameron Walling, and Schyler Shanahan pressured the quarterback from the linebacking position. The secondary, consisting of Micheal Kersten, Casey Brown, Dyllon Kellner, Randy Else, and Josh Proctor, allowed the Antlers to only complete four passes in the second half combined. 

As time was winding down, the Antlers spread the field, attempting to get behind the Warrior defenders, but Randy Else was able to intercept the ball from Elkhorn, but the Warriors turned the ball back over to the Antlers on a fumble. With the Antlers knocking on the door, with a fourth and three from the five yard line, the Warrior defense once again tightened up and stuffed the Antler running back short of the line, giving the Warriors the ball back on offense. 

The Warriors moved the ball down the field with Christian Hohl running the offense, as the Warriors used the blocking of Cameron Walling to open holes for Seth Stewart, who amassed over 85 yards on the ground in the second half alone, showing a tough inside running game, along with burst of speed on the perimeter. The Warriors were unable to score on the possession with the Antlers stopping the Warriors with a late interception, giving the Antlers the ball where they were able to finally get on the board with under 1:20 minutes remaining in the game, making the score 26-7. 

As the stands began to clear, the Warriors gave the crowd one last highlight, as Sean Lindgren took the final kickoff of the game 70 yards to pay dirt, on the tremendous blocking of Lucas McAtee, Colter Mattson, Christian Hohl, and Cole Barry. Christian Hohl converted the final PAT giving the Warriors a hard-fought 33-7 victory over the Antlers.
