The Wahoo JV football team hosted Raymond Central on Monday, October 3, 2011.
The Warrior defense started out quickly, forcing a three and out from the visiting Mustangs. Wahoo took over on the Mustang 35-yard line and quickly moved the ball down the field, with Ben Scheef and Drake Steinmetz carrying the load. Scheef finished off the three-play drive with a 6-yard QB keep. The Warriors took a 6-0 lead after the missed PAT attempt.
Wahoo pressured the Mustang offense, forcing another punt on five plays. Wahoo took over on the Warrior 45-yard line, with Scheef and Gavin Iversen moving the ball on the ground at will. The offensive line of Trevor Carstens, Nathan Redding, Matthew Spicka, Will Holdsworth, and Derek Bell opened up huge holes for the Warrior offense all night long. The Warriors capped off the five-play scoring drive with a 26-yard pass from B. Scheef to his younger brother, Jake, extending the lead to 12-0 after the missed PAT.
The Wahoo defense wasted no time getting the ball back for the Warriors, with Iversen intercepting the Mustang pass on first down and returning it back to the Raymond Central 38-yard line. The Warriors showed a balance attack, with B. Scheef connecting with Brandon Zetocka for a 20-yard pass on the first play of the drive. Scheef and Steinmetz carried the load the rest of the drive, with Steinmetz converting the 2-yard run for the score. Alex Abbott completed the 2-point conversion to give the Warriors a 20-0 lead.
The Warrior defense forced another three and out, giving Wahoo the ball on the Mustang 35-yard line. The next offensive series was the Alfonso Buol show. Buol carried the ball exclusively on the three-play scoring drive, showing speed and elusiveness in extending the Warrior lead. Zetocka converted the PAT to give Wahoo a 27-0 lead.
The Warrior defense was good for another three and out, giving the Warriors the ball on the Mustang 40-yard line. B. Scheef and Iversen carried the ball on the three-play drive, with B. Scheef finishing with an 8-yard run to push the lead to 33-0 going into halftime.
The Warrior offense picked up where they left off to start the third quarter, driving 55 yards on eight plays, with Steinmetz, B. Scheef, and Buol pounding out the yards on the ground, capped off by a 4-yard plunge by Steinmetz. The lead increased to 40-0, after the successful PAT by Zetocka.
With the clock running, the second half moved quickly with the Wahoo defense negating any Raymond Central attempts to move the ball into Warrior territory for the entire second half. The final scoring drive for the Warriors came during the transition between the third and fourth quarters with Iversen directing a 35-yard, nine-play drive, that culminated with another rushing touchdown by Buol, giving the Warriors their final score of 46-0 over the Mustangs.
The Warriors next game will be on Monday, October 10 with the JV football team heading to Ashland to take on the Bluejays at 6:00 p.m.

The Wahoo 9th/10th grade team hosted Mt. Michael on Thursday, September 29 at Wahoo High School.
Although outnumbered 20 to 54, the young Warriors showed their resilience throughout the contest in their game against Mt. Michael.
The Warriors started the game on offense and took control with Gavin Iversen, Drake Steinmetz, and Alex Abbott leading the way on the ground for Wahoo. Abbott capped off the six-play, 55-yard drive with a three-yard plunge to give Wahoo the early lead. The extra point was no good, giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead.
After trading a series of three and outs with Mt. Michael, the Wahoo offense returned a punt near midfield to give the Warriors excellent field position. Once again, Warriors pounded the rock, with Steinmetz and Iversen alternating carries, culminating with a 15-yard run by Iversen on the option, to give the Warriors a 13-0 lead, after the successful PAT by Zetocka.
The Knights went to the air, hitting a long pass over the top of the Warrior defense on the next possession, but the Wahoo defense tightened up, holding off the Mt. Micheal offense and getting the ball back on an interception by Zetocka in the end zone.
This trend continued as Wahoo threw a pass high, that was intercepted by the Knights and returned to the Warrior 25-yard line. But the streak of interceptions was not over, when Mt. Micheal was once again intercepted in the end zone, by Jake Scheef, who returned the ball to the 20-yard line.
The Warriors put together a 12-play drive, with Steinmetz and Iversen toting the rock to put Wahoo on the Knights’ 30-yard line. Iversen scrambled on the next play and found Steinmetz behind the defense, this time through the air, for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good, but the Warriors extended their lead to 19-0 over the Knights.
The Warrior secondary took over the game on defense, with Iversen intercepting a Mt. Michael pass and taking it back 60-yards for a touchdown. But the Warriors were called for a block in the back, negating the score, sending the Warriors to halftime with a 19-0 lead.
Wahoo traded three and outs again with Mt. Michael to start the second half, but found their ground game again with Steinmetz taking a toss 50-yards down the Knights’ sideline before being tripped up on the three. Abbott finished up the drive with a 3-yard run, giving the Warriors a 26-0 lead after the successful PAT by Zetocka.
Steinmetz continued his scoring only this time on defense, intercepting another Knight pass and taking it back 35-yards for a Warrior touchdown. Zetocka found the center of the uprights on the PAT to give the Warriors a 33-0 lead.
Douglas Ford joined Steinmetz with his own interception on the next Knights’ possession, returning the ball to near midfield. The Wahoo offense turned the ball over on the next drive, giving the ball back to the Knights on the Wahoo 30-yard line. Steinmetz, once again, intercepted an errant Mt. Michael pass on the 25-yard line and took it back 75-yards down the Wahoo sideline for a touchdown. The Warriors extended their lead to 39-0, after missing the PAT.
Not to be outdone, Zetocka intercepted the Knights’ final scoring attempt inside the 10-yard line and took it back 90-yards for the final score of the evening for the Warriors, giving them a 45-0 victory and a record 3 interceptions for touchdowns on the night.

The Wahoo JV football team traveled to Arlington on Monday, September 19 to take on the Eagles.
The Warrior and the Eagles traded punches for most of the first quarter, with both teams tightening up their defense and forcing both teams to punt to start the game.
Towards the end of the first quarter, the Eagles struck first with a long pass play down the Eagle sideline to give them a short field. After a rally by the Wahoo defense, the Eagles scored on a short run to take a 0-6 lead.
The Warriors’ luck changed when Ben Scheef intercepted a pass by the Arlington quarterback and ran it back 20 yards to the Arlington 40-yard line. Gavin Iversen gained 9-yards on a rush on first down for Wahoo. Zach Luben caught a 6-yard hitch for a first down from Scheef to keep the drive alive. Scheef ran the option to perfection, finding a crease in the middle of the Eagles’ defense and taking it 25 yards for a Warrior touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed with the Warriors tying up the game at 6-6.
The Eagles responded with a touchdown of their own towards the end of the third quarter, taking a 12-6 lead, after a failed 2-point conversion.
With time winding down, Scheef rallied the Warrior offense with his rushing on the ground and through the air, converting two fourth down pass plays to Iversen, putting the Warriors in a goal-to-go situation.
After two failed passing attempts down the middle of the field, Scheef once again used his feet, this time to allude the Eagles’ defender to buy time, once again finding Iversen short of the goal line, but Iversen was able to shake the corner and find the end zone. Alex Abbott took the ball on a trap play to seal the victory for the Warriors, with a 16-14 final score.
The Warriors’ next game will be on Thursday, September 29, with the 9th/10th grade football team hosting Mt. Michael at 6:00 p.m.

The Wahoo freshmen and sophomore football team traveled to Seward High School on September 15, 2011 to take on the Bluejays.
The theme of the night was “dealing with adversity,” as the Warriors got themselves into and out of challenging situations throughout the night.
The Warriors took the opening kickoff and proceeded to move the ball down the field on the Bluejay defense, with Drake Steinmetz, Seth Bohac, and Alex Abbott churning out yards on the ground, as the line of Will Holdsworth, Nathan Redding, Derek Bell, Kyle White, and Trey Carstens opened up huge holes for the Warrior offense. But a miscue on an attempt to draw the Bluejay defense off sides gave Seward a touchdown on a fumble recovery, giving them a 0-6 lead.
Both sides traded offensive and defensive series back and forth, with the majority of the game being played between the thirty yard lines, with neither team willing to budge.
The Wahoo offense came to life with Gavin Iversen at quarterback, running the option, and moving the ball down to the Bluejay 40-yard line. After an 8-yard gain from Steinmetz, Iversen ran a quarterback boot to perfection, gaining 18-yards and giving the Warriors momentum on offense. Iversen found Tye Phillips in the back of the end zone on the next play for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Abbott found pay dirt on the 2-point conversion, giving the Warriors an 8-6 lead over the Bluejays.
The Bluejays wasted no time in striking back, hitting the Warriors with a pass over the top for a 64-yard touchdown and taking back the lead, after failing on the 2-point conversion, 8-12 into halftime.
After trading offensive and defensive series to start the third quarter, the Warriors took control on offense, chewing up the rest of the quarter with Bohac at quarterback and behind the legs of Iversen, Abbott, and Alfonso Buol.
Bohac found Brandon Zetocka and Iversen on screen passes, gaining 5 yards and 16 yards, respectively, giving the Warriors the ball on the three-yard line, goal to goal, as the quarter ended. Steinmetz finished off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown plunge. With a successful 2-point conversion, the Warriors took a 16-12 lead.
The Bluejays, once again, responded with a nine-play, 55-yard scoring drive, taking back the lead again, 18-16, after a failed 2-point conversion.
The Warrior offense dug down, once again, and found a way to respond, with Steinmetz leading the way on the ground, carrying the ball five times for 65 yards and giving the Warriors the lead for good, after converting the 2-point conversion, for a well-earned 24-18 victory over the Bluejays.
The Warriors’ next game will be on Monday, September 19 at Arlington at 6:00 p.m.
JV Warriors Shut Out DC West in 2011 Season Opener

The Wahoo JV football team kicked off their 2011 season with a 26 -0 victory over DC West at Wahoo High School field on September 12.
The Wahoo defense wasted no time in establishing their dominance with Seth Lindgren and Matthew Spicka stuffing the DC West quarter back for a 2-yard loss and stripping the football, giving Wahoo the football on the 36-yard line.
After a short gain by Drake Steinmetz, the Warriors struck quickly with a 30-yard strike from Brook Stuart to Tye Phillips for a 30-yard touchdown. Stuart converted the 2-pt conversion, giving the Warriors an 8-0 lead.
Although DC West was able to move the ball on their first two downs, the Warrior defense tightened up and forced a punt from DC West, giving Wahoo the ball on the Warriors 30-yard line.
Stuart gained 10-yards on an option play down the Warrior sideline, and Alfonso Buol added another 6-yards rushing before the Warrior offense sputtered, forcing Wahoo to punt. The Warriors’ special teams rose to the occasion, with Stuart sprinting down the field to tackle the punt returner and forcing a fumble that was recovered by a hustling Brandon Zetocka, giving the Warriors life on offense on the DC West 30-yard line.
Steinmetz ran the ball strong on consecutive carries for 20 yards. Stuart found Alex Abbott in the flat on a play action pass, giving the Warriors the ball on the 5-yard line. Stuart found pay dirt on the next play, finding Zetocka in the corner of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown score. The 2-pt conversion failed, giving the Warriors a 14-0 lead.
The second quarter was marred by turnovers for both teams, with the Warriors missing out on scoring opportunities on both of their second quarter drives. The Warrior defense recovered two fumbles in the quarter and went to halftime with a 14-0 lead.
The Warriors received the kickoff to start the second half. Wahoo was lead by Stuart and Steinmetz, who carried the ball for gains of 12, 6, 8, 10, and 3 to start the opening drive. With the DC West defense primed for the run, Stuart used play action to find a wide-open Zetocka down the Warrior sideline for a 40-yard gain to put the Warriors on the 3-yard line and in scoring position. Stuart ran the option to perfection, holding the ball until the last second and pitching the ball to Buol, who outran the Falcon defenders for the score. The 2-pt conversion failed giving the Warriors a 20-0 lead.
The Warrior defense rose up to get the ball back one more time, with Colton Spangler and Douglas Ford combining on the tackle and Spangler knocking the ball loose and recovering the fumble for the Warriors.
The final offensive series for the Warriors was lead by Ben Scheef, who handed the ball off to Abbott for an 8-yard gain on first down. After an incompletion, Scheef powered forward for a Warrior first down, keeping the drive alive. Scheef found Zach Luben up the DC West sideline for an 8-yard gain, putting the Warriors in scoring position. The combination of Scheef and Luben proved to be a good one with Scheef finding Luben in the left corner of the end zone for the final score of the game, giving the Warriors the 26-0 victory over DC West.
The Warriors’ next game will be on Thursday, September 15 with the 9th/10th grade football team traveling to Seward at 6:00 p.m.

The Wahoo freshmen and sophomore football team started their season on a high note with a 54 -0 victory over Bishop Neumann at Wahoo High School field on September 2, 2011.
The Warriors received the opening kickoff, with Drake Steinmetz returning the ball to the 35-yard line. The Wahoo offense pounded it on the ground early in the drive, with Steinmetz churning for 28 yards on two carries. Gavin Iversen found Tye Phillips down the far sideline behind the Cavalier defense for a 45-yard touchdown strike and the first score of the game. Steinmetz completed the 2-point conversion run for an 8-0 Warrior lead.
Defensively, the Warriors capitalized on an arrant Bishop Neumann pass with Iversen intercepting the ball and returning it to the Cavalier 35-yard line. After some short yardage runs by Iversen, the Warriors found the end zone with Iversen cutting back across the defense for a 25-yard touchdown run. Iversen was lead by his offensive line, consisting of Trey Carstens, Derek Bell, Kyle White, Brent Tenopir, and Nathan Redding, who cleared the way for the Warriors’ rushing attack. Alex Abbott completed the 2-point conversion run for a 16-0 lead.
Launch the media gallery 3 playerOn defense, the Warriors continued its physical assault with Phillips and Steinmetz recording a tackle for loss on the opening play of the Cavalier drive. Bishop Neumann’s drive came to a screeching halt when Redding collapsed the pocket, sacking the Cavalier quarterback and giving Wahoo the ball back on offense.
The Warriors continued where they left off with Iversen finding a wide-open Brandon Zetocka on a play action pass, with Zetocka making three Bishop Neumann defenders miss, while scrambling for a 35-yard gain. Wahoo found the end zone on a 28-yard screen pass from Iversen to Jake Scheef, who outraced the Cavalier defenders down the sideline. Iversen hit Phillips in the corner of the end zone for the 2-point conversion, giving the Warriors a 24-0 lead.
The Warrior defense tightened up right before half with Brent Tenopir and Redding combining for a sack and Seth Bohac rising up to intercept a Cavalier pass to send the Warriors into half with a 24-0 lead.
The Wahoo defense picked up where they left off, forcing a Cavalier punt on their first possession. Iversen took the punt and cut across the field lead by a crushing block from Steinmetz to free him. Following Phillips and Andrew Vech, Iversen dashed to the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown. Bohac hit Scheef for the 2-point conversion, giving the Warriors a 32-0 lead.
The Cavaliers went four and out on their next possession, giving the Warriors the ball near midfield. Steinmetz made short work of the possession, breaking off a 45-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. Abbott converted the 2-point conversion pushing the lead to 40-0 for the Warriors.
The Warriors showed tremendous awareness on the first play from scrimmage on defense, with Scheef scooping up a screen pass thrown behind the line of scrimmage and running 35-yards for a score. Abbott once again converted the 2-point conversion for a 48-0 Warrior lead.
Iversen wrapped up the scoring for the Warriors with an 8-yard touchdown run on a beautifully executed counter play, giving Wahoo a 54-0 victory.
The Warriors’ next game will be on Monday, September 12 versus DC West at 6:00 p.m. at Wahoo High School.
