Warriors Roll in Second Half
by Rod Henkel / World-Herald Correspondent
Seldom does a state quarterfinal football game become so lopsided that the clock continues to run, but Wahoo scored 34 unanswered points on Arlington to force that situation.
Jon Abbott and Tyler Kavan each scored on a pair of touchdown runs Tuesday night and the Warriors ran for 385 yards for a 43-8 Class C-1 win over their Capitol Conference rivals.
Wahoo (9-2) advanced for the second time in school history to the state semifinals, where they will face Platteview next Tuesday in a rematch of a regular-season game won 63-14 by the Trojans.
"I thought if we played as well as we have been the last few weeks, we could have an outcome similar to what we saw," said Wahoo coach Chad Fox. "We're kind of hitting our stride. We've got a lot of good things going right now."
After Arlington's Drew Schroeder drew the Eagles (7-4) to within 9-8 on a 19-yard, fourth-down touchdown run where he ran around a seal block by Harrison Harner, the Warriors dominated.
Abbott threw to Jacob Moline for a 30-yard touchdown pass to cap an 80-yard scoring drive that featured Abbott keepers of 19 and 20 yards. The Warriors followed with a 65-yard march in 12 plays that ended when Seth Stewart took a lateral and bulled over Arlington defenders on his way to a 10-yard touchdown.
Wahoo's score with 1:16 left in the half increased its lead to 22-8.
"I felt if we could be with them at half ... (It) would have been nice if they didn't get that last score," said Arlington coach Steven Gubbels. "They're a talented team. Once they got rolling, they've got too many weapons."
Wahoo recovered an Eagle onside kick to start the third quarter and scored two plays later on Tyler Kavan's 44-yard run. Kavan scored on a 73-yard run on Wahoo's next play from scrimmage. The third Warrior possession of the half lasted eight plays and went 68 yards with Abbott's 1-yard touchdown on a bootleg resulting in the continuous clock.
"In the locker room I talked to everybody," Stewart said. "I said, 'They haven't played a game as physical as we just showed them.' We made it a point at halftime to pick up the way we ended."
Stewart was part of a defensive effort that limited the hard-running Schroeder and the Eagles' power running game. The senor totaled 11 tackles, while Kyle Zeleny had a team-high 14.
"Mostly just focus on what we do," Stewart said. "Put as many guys in the box as you can, make tackles and be where we're supposed to be."
Schroeder led the Eagles with 112 yards on 24 carries, while fullback Harner gained 44 yards and quarterback Cody Erickson rushed for 46. Arlington completed just 2 of 11 passes for 37 yards, while Wahoo's Stewart and Josh Langemeier each made interceptions.
"We have two freshmen and two sophomore in the offensive line," Gubbels said. "We said we're going to pound the ball this year. You have to start somewhere. That's what got us here."
Wahoo was able to mix in a passing game with the running of Kavan (199 yards), Stewart (28), Langemeier (51) and Abbott (84). Abbott completed 4 of 5 passes for 60 yards, and four other backward passes netted 61 yards.
"Abbott's very accurate and we have some nice receivers," Fox said. "That adds a little dimension to our offense; they can't load the box. We don't have to throw the ball downfield too much."

Wahoo seemed to find some breaks in its final regular season game versus Ashland-Greenwood.
Wahoo managed to get on the scoreboard first when Jon Abbott had a 1-yard touchdown run and Seth Lindgren added the PAT to put the Warriors up 7-0. Ashland tied the game scoring about a half way through the 2nd quarter to put the score at 7-7 going into halftime.
Ashland-Greenwood scored again in the 3rd quarter to put the score at 13-7. Abbott blocked the PAT, which would end up being one of the key plays of the game. Wahoo would not put any more points on the board until the Blue Jays had another Special Teams miscue. As time expired in the 3rd quarter, Ashland-Greenwood’s long snapper snapped the ball over the punter’s head for a safety to put the score at 13-9.
Wahoo would receive the ball after the safety, which would set up the winning drive early in the 4th quarter. Abbott capped the winning drive with a 40-yard touchdown run. Lindgren added the PAT to put the score to 16-13 for the Warriors.
Wahoo did not have the game in hand yet as the Bluejays attempted one last drive for the winning score. With just a few minutes on the clock, one of Ashland’s receivers was headed to the end zone when Seth Stewart made a game-winning play. He tripped up the receiver, causing him to fumble the ball on the 1-yard line. The ruling on the field was a touchback, which gave the Warriors the ball.
Abbott led all rushers with 66 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns, followed by Stewart with 54 yards rushing. Jacob Moline led all receivers with 89 yards receiving. Abbott added 113 yards through the air on the evening.
Wahoo’s defense stepped up and made some big plays when needed. They were led by Stewart with 11 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 sack. Kyle Zeleny had 9 tackles with one of those for a loss. Abbott had 2 interceptions on the evening.
Wahoo will welcome the Syracuse Rockets back to town on Thursday, October 27 for the 1st Round of the Playoffs. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Wahoo had a long night while facing off against Platteview on Oct. 7.
The Warriors struggled sustaining drives on offense, and on defense Wahoo had a tough time stopping the Trojans from finding the end zone.
Wahoo managed to keep the game close at the end of the first quarter, being behind 0-7, but it wasn’t long and Platteview’s offense exploded for 28 points in the 2nd quarter, while Wahoo only scored on a Jon Abbott 21-yard pass to Jacob Moline to put the Warriors on the board. Platteview took a 35-7 lead into halftime.
Wahoo’s struggles didn’t go away in the 2nd half as Platteview put up another 28 points while Wahoo could only find the end zone after a long kick return by Tyler Kavan. Abbott scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Kavan led Wahoo in rushing with 82 yards on 12 carries, while Jacob Moline had two catches for 45 yards to lead the Warriors in receiving.
Defensively the Warriors were led by Seth Stewart with 12 tackles and Kyle Zeleny with 11 tackles. Josh Langmeier and Kirk Lindstrom both had six tackles each, while Jacob Moline added five tackles on the evening.
Wahoo will look to shake off the loss and host ranked Neumann on Friday night, Oct. 14.

Wahoo picked up its 5th victory of the season on Friday night in a hard-fought game with Omaha Roncalli.
Wahoo had to rely on its defense and special teams to secure the win. The defense had a “bend but don’t break” attack going as they gave up 259 yards of total offense, but turned the Crimson Pride back 4 times inside the 15 yard line.

The Wahoo offense struggled to handle the penetrating defensive line of Roncalli. Jon Abbott did find the end zone at the end of the first quarter, scoring on an 8-yard run. The Warrior defense stepped up again as Abbott intercepted a pass from Roncalli that set up the Warrior offense on a short field.
Tyler Kavan then had a spectacular run around, over and through several of the Crimson Pride defenders as he scored from 49 yards out to push the score to 12-0. The 2-point conversion was turned away.
The defense then was called on to step up again as Brook Stuart intercepted a pass in the back of the end zone as time expired in the first half.
The second half started with Wahoo Special Teams making a big play as Josh Langemeier returned a kick-off 90 yards to put the Warriors up 18-0 just seconds into the third quarter. Langemeier would add 2 points to the score when he caught a pass from Jon Abbott from three yards out.
Both teams’ offenses would move the ball in the second half, but they couldn’t find the end zone, and the game ended 20-0, giving the Warriors their second District #2 win and moving their record to 5-0.
Kavan finish with 178 yards on 17 carries, Seth Stewart had 75 yards on 13 carries to lead the Warriors in rushing. Abbott had 60 yards passing with 47 of those yards going to Langemeier, and Abbott added 25 yards on the ground.
Defensively the Warriors were led by Kyle Zeleny and Stewart. Zeleny had 14 tackles and Stewart had 12 tackles on the night. Dylan Jaskulski also added 8 tackles on the night for the Wahoo Defense.
Wahoo will head to Platteview next Friday to avenge its only regular season loss from the 2010 season.

The Warriors got off to a much faster start this week, scoring early and often versus the D.C. West Falcons.
During the first defensive play from scrimmage, Jonathan Abbott intercepted the D.C. West pass to get things started for Wahoo. On the very next play, Tyler Kavan ran in the first score from 55 yards out. The Warriors led 6-0 with less than a minute off the clock.
After another defensive stop, Abbott found Josh Langemeier in the end zone from 20 yards out. Kirk Lindstrom added the 2-point conversion to put the Warriors up 14-0 with just over 7 minutes left in the 1st quarter.
Abbott then ran in a 6-yard touchdown with one minute left in the 1st quarter, and Langemeier added the extra point to put Wahoo up 21-0.
With the defense playing strong all game long, Wahoo added two more scores in the 2nd quarter to put the half-time score at 33-0. Lindstrom added a one-yard run and Kavan scored from 43 yards out.
After the break Kavan scored his third rushing touchdown from 19 yards out to push the score to 39-0. With a running clock, the second half moved along pretty quickly. Abbott added the final score for the Warriors when he ran in a nine-yard run with 11:08 left in the 4th quarter. D.C. West did finally score on Warrior reserve defense, to put the final score at 46-6.
The Wahoo offense was lead by Kavan, who rushed for 204 yards on 9 carries and 3 touchdowns. Seth Stewart added 98 yards on 16 carries and Abbott had 76 yards on 8 carries.

Wahoo got on the board first when Jon Abbott found Kirk Lindstrom in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 5:08 in the 1st quarter.
The Warriors got on the scoreboard again in the 2nd quarter when Jon Abbott scored on a 15-yard run to push the score to 12-0.
Wahoo got a fast start in the second half when Tyler Kavan ran one in from 5 yards, and Josh Langemeier added 2 points on the conversion. Then Lindstrom found the end zone for a second time, this time with a 4-yard touchdown run, and Jake Wilson caught the 2-point conversion pass.
Wahoo was in control with the score being 28-0. Raymond Central was not going away when they scored on a pass play to make the score 28-6 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Wahoo finished the game with two more scores: Seth Stewart with a 5-yard run and Abbott with a 12-yard run.

Balance on both sides of the football paved the way for Wahoo's 39-7 win over Capitol Conference rival Syracuse Friday night.
When Warrior senior Seth Stewart capped the scoring on a 15-yard touchdown run with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter, Wahoo totaled 184 yards rushing and 184 yards passing. The Warriors finished with 413 yards.
"That's what we'd like to do," Warrior coach Chad Fox said.
Junior Tyler Kavan, who led Wahoo with 113 yards on 16 carries, scored on a pair of 8-yard touchdown runs for a 14-0 first-quarter lead. The Warriors then lost a pair of turnovers on pass plays - an interception and a fumble on a bubble screen.
Syracuse cut the lead to 14-7 on a 2-yard TD run by Mitch Goering, eight plays after the Wahoo lost fumble.
"There in the second quarter, when we tried to do that balance, we had an interception and a fumble on the bubble pass," Fox said. "Maybe we should have kept pounding it at them. The best thing is the kids responded."
Touchdowns on four straight possessions pushed Wahoo's lead to 32 points. Warrior junior quarterback Jonathan Abbott capped a 24-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run two plays after his 11-yard gain on an option converted a fourth-and-1.
Abbott, who completed 11 of 16 passes, avoided a sack to find Josh Langemeier in the end zone on the final play of the first half.
Langemeier caught five passes for 95 yards, including a 59-yard completion on Wahoo's first play of the second half on a pump and go pass. Abbott scored on a 5-yard run four plays later.
Stewart, who rushed for 59 yards, scored his touchdown on the next possession to cap a seven-play, 67-yard march.
"They're big and they're physical," said Syracuse coach Rick Nordhues. "Their skilled kids are just strong. Kavan and Stewart are so strong and they run with low pads.
"Their quarterback is very accurate, nothing flashy."
While Wahoo had four turnovers, including three fumbles, Syracuse's mistakes had more disastrous results.
The Rockets (1-1) lost a fumble on their first play, their third possession, and on a kickoff after Kavan's second touchdown. They lost a fourth midway through the second quarter.
"We came in tight," Nordhues said. "They didn't loosen up and didn't play with any confidence."
Wahoo's defense had something to do with that.
Syracuse finished with minus-10 yards on 28 rushes, and had 61 passing yards. It managed just four first downs - two on its touchdown drive, one on a roughing-the punter penalty, and one on the game's final play.
"They just pressure, pressure, pressure," Nordhues said.
Kyle Zeleny led the Warrior 4-3 defense with 10 tackles, while Kirk Lindstrom had six, Jacob Moline made five, and Ben Scheef made an interception.
"We've found we can be much more effective on defense when we're on our toes, moving downhill and being aggressive," Fox said. "We're going to be a pressure defense. Coach (Jayson) Iversen brings a lot of different guys from a lot of different positions."
The Warriors look to keep their unbeaten season alive Friday night at Raymond Central.

The Wahoo Warriors got off to an unusual start on Friday for their season opener.
The Warriors had to finish their game on Saturday night because of a weather delay. Wahoo controlled the game from the start and didn’t look back. The Warriors took the first drive down the field and scored as Jon Abbott threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Josh Langemeier to go up 6-0. Langemeier added the PAT to make it 7-0. After a Tyler Kavan interception on Auburn next drive, Seth Stewart ran in the second score from five yards out.
In the 2nd quarter, the Warrior defense stepped up again, forcing a punt, and then Auburn snapped the ball out of the end zone for a safety, and the Warriors went up 16-0. The Warriors and Bulldogs then had to retreat to the locker rooms for a weather delay that lasted over 1 ½ hours. After the first weather delay, Stewart added another score to push the Warrior lead to 23-0. The second weather delay then occurred not long after that, and the game resumed on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
Wahoo picked up where they left off on Saturday night, as Langemeier intercepted an Auburn pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. Then the Wahoo offense scored two more times on big plays in the last two minutes of the second quarter. Kavan had a 57-yard touchdown run and Abbott ran in an option from 28 yards to put the half-time score to 43-6.
The running clock in the second half only allowed the Warrior offense to score two more times, as Abbott ran in another score from the 5 yard line, and Langemeier ran in another rushing touchdown from 6 yards to cap all the scoring.
The Warriors dominated both sides of the ball, only giving up a kick-off return for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. The Warrior defense gave up 9 yards of total offense for the evening. They were led by the efforts of Kirk Lindstrom with 5 tackles, Jacob Moline for 3 tackles, Jason Semrad for 4 tackles and a sack, and Jack Putnam, who had 4 tackles, a sack, a fumble caused and a fumble recovery.
Wahoo welcomes the Syracuse Rockets to town on next Friday, September 9.
