The Wahoo JV football team played their final game of the 2010 season against Bishop Neumann at Wahoo High School on October 18, 2010.
Josh Langemeier took the opening kickoff back to the Warrior 35-yard line to start the game for Wahoo. Tyler Kavan wasted no time, springing for a 35-yard run, behind his offensive line, on the first play of the game. Kyle Zeleny earned a hard-fought 4-yards on a trap play on first down, with Langemeier taking a bubble from Jonathan Abbott for another 4-yards, giving the Warriors a 3rd and short. As the Cavalier defense blitzed on 3rd down, the Warrior offensive line picked up the stunt and Zeleny rumbled past the blitzing defenders for another Warrior first down. Abbott found Ben Scheef on a slant pass for a 14-yard gain, putting the Warriors in a first and goal situation. Kavan finished off the scoring drive with an 8-yard run down to the 1-yard line, punching it in on the next play giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead.
The Wahoo defense rose to the occasion, with Jack Putnam and Jason Semrad forcing a Cavalier fumble on 2nd down, giving the Warriors the ball with a short field. Abbott found Langemeier, who made a tremendous diving catch, to give Wahoo a 10-yard gain. Kavan finished off the drive with a 16-yard run down the Cavalier sideline. Abbott found Scheef, yet again, in the corner of the end zone on a jump pass for the 2 pt. conversion, extending the lead to 22-0.
The Wahoo kickoff team forced another Cavalier turnover, with the Warrior defenders stripping the ball from the Cavalier returner, giving Wahoo another short field, but the Warriors’ offense sputtered giving the Cavaliers the ball. The Warrior defense forced a three-and-out, giving the Warriors the ball back near midfield. The Warrior offense moved the ball right down the field against the Cavalier defense, but a penalty and offensive miscues gave the Cavaliers the ball back at their own 12-yard line.
After a short drive, the Warrior defense tightened up, forcing a Cavalier turnover and giving the Warriors the ball back on the 35-yard line. The Wahoo offense got back on track with Kavan carrying the load, with carries of 8 and 22-yards, giving the Warriors first down on the 5 yard line. Abbott found Langemeier on a bubble screen, giving Wahoo a 28-0 lead. Abbott, again, found Langemeier on a short pass for the 2 pt. conversion, pushing the lead to 30-0 for the Warriors at halftime.
The Warrior defense forced another three-and-out to start the second half and wasted no time getting the ball back for Wahoo, when a high snap sailed over the Cavalier punter’s head, giving Wahoo the ball on the 11-yard line. The Warriors wasted no time scoring with Kavan streaking past a blitzing linebacker from Bishop Neumann and finding the end zone for a 36-0 lead, less than 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter. Kavan found paydirt on the 2 pt. conversion, extending the lead to 38-0 for the Warriors.
The Cavaliers mounted a drive of their own, scoring on a broken play by the Warrior defense, closing the lead to 38-6 for the Warriors. Langemeier took the kickoff back to the 42-yard line, giving the Warriors excellent field position to start their next drive. The Wahoo line opened gaping holes, with Langemeier gashing the Cavalier defense for 12 and 16-yard runs consecutively. After a penalty, the Warriors found themselves in a 4th and long. Abbott found Jacob Moline up the Cavalier sideline for a first down. The Warriors were not able to cash in on the drive. The Warrior defense subbed down and the Cavalier first teamers took advantage of it, scoring quickly to close the lead to 38-12.
The Warriors quickly moved the ball down the field behind the running of Kirk Lindstrom and Brandon Ford, moving Wahoo down to the 30-yard line for the Cavaliers. Abbott found Moline on a 20-yard pass, setting up the Warriors on the 10-yard line. Abbott found Scheef in the corner of the end zone giving Wahoo 44-12 lead. Kavan barreled into the end zone for the 2 pt. conversion, giving Wahoo a 46-12 lead.
Wahoo quickly got the ball back offensively and mounted their final scoring drive of the night behind the legs of Lindstrom and Scheef, with Lindstrom scoring on a 14-yard run to give the Warriors the 52-12 victory.
The Warrior football coaches would like to say “THANK YOU” to all of the players, parents, and fans for all of their support during the 2010 season. The Wahoo JV football team played the first of their two games this week against Ashland at Wahoo High School on October 11, 2010.
Early on in the game, the Warriors and Bluejays traded punches, with both teams forced to punt, in a game of field position, on consecutive possessions. The Wahoo defense forced Ashland into another 3rd and long, when Zach Luben intercepted a wayward Bluejay pass, returning it to the Ashland 22-yard line, putting Wahoo into scoring position. Wahoo began their drive with a screen pass from Jonathan Abbott to Josh Langemeier for a Warrior first down. The Warriors got on the scoreboard with a 10-yard run by Tyler Kavan, giving them a 6-0 lead.
The Warriors and Bluejays, once again, traded three-and-outs, with Jacob Moline providing a spark for Wahoo, picking off another Ashland pass, giving the Warriors the ball near midfield. Kavan provided a spark for the Warriors, ripping off a 33-yard run down the Bluejay sideline, giving the Warriors life on offense. Next, Langemeier took a pitch from Abbott 10-yards down the Warrior sideline, moving the sticks for Wahoo. The Warriors faced a third-and-long, after a penalty pushed them back to the 30-yard line, when Abbott found Moline on a long pass down the Warrior sideline, with Moline out jumping the Ashland defender and willing his way into the end zone, giving Wahoo a 12-0 lead.
The Wahoo defense made quick work of Ashland, with Ben Scheef picking off a third Bluejay pass, giving Wahoo the ball near midfield again. The Warrior offense sputtered and was forced to punt, but the Wahoo special teams rose up, with Kyle Zeleny and the punt coverage team forcing an Ashland fumble, giving the Warriors the ball on the 30-yard line. With less than a minute left in the half, Abbott found Moline near the Wahoo sideline, to give the Warriors the first down and stop the clock. Abbott then found Langemeier on a 15-yard pass down the Bluejay sideline, giving Wahoo an 18-0 lead, with 0:26 left in the half. Ashland was able to return the Wahoo kickoff for a touchdown, after some poor tackling by the Warriors, closing the lead to 18-8 at halftime.
After some adjustments and refocusing at halftime, the Warriors’ defense stepped up immediately, forcing the Bluejays into a long third down play, with Abbott intercepting a fourth Ashland pass, giving the ball back to the Warriors. The Warriors slowly moved the ball down the field behind runs from Abbott, Zeleny, and Kavan, with Wahoo facing a fourth down call from the 38-yard line. With the Ashland defenders following the Warrior receivers down the field vertically, Abbott found Kavan on a swing pass down the Ashland sideline, with Kavan fighting for a first down and then hit a crease taking the pass in for another Wahoo touchdown. Abbott found Langemeier on a short pass for the 2 pt. conversion, giving the Warriors a 26-8 lead.
In a moment of deja-vu, all over again, the Wahoo defense quickly got the ball back again with Langemeier stepping in front of the first Bluejay pass and returning it back to the original line of scrimmage, giving Wahoo the ball back on offense. Langemeier took a toss from Abbott and cut back across the Bluejay defense for a 39-yard touchdown run for Wahoo, giving the Warriors a 32-8 lead.
The Warrior defense created more havoc for the Bluejay offense, crushing an Ashland ball carrier and forcing a fumble recovered by Kavan on the Wahoo 35-yard line. Langemeier scrambled 12-yards up the Ashland sideline for a first down on the first play of the series. Kavan took a counter play 34-yards to the Ashland 18-yard line. Langemeier finished off the drive with an 18-yard run off another counter play putting the Warriors up 38-8.
As Ashland mounted their final drive, the Warrior defense adopted a bend-but-don’t-break mentality, turning away the Bluejays on a 4th down pass near the goal line, giving the Warriors the ball back on offense. Wahoo made the most of the possession with Langemeier carrying the load for Wahoo. On the first play from scrimmage, Langemeier cut back across the defense on a toss play, picking up 35-yards for the Warriors. Langemeier plowed through the Ashland defense for another 15-yard gain, putting the Warriors on the 30-yard line of Ashland. Langemeier capped off the drive by finding a crease in the Ashland defense and up the Warrior sideline for a 30-yard touchdown and giving Wahoo the 44-8 victory.

North Bend 6
The Wahoo JV football team traveled to North Bend to face the Tigers’ JV squad at North Bend Jr./Sr. High School on October 4, 2010.
The Warriors started with the ball on offense and got off to a quick start with Kyle Zeleny gashing the Tiger defense for a 38-yard gain, putting the ball on the Tiger 15-yard line. The Warriors pounded the rock with Tyler Kavan to the 3-yard line. Jonathan Abbott found Kavan on a screen pass for the Warriors’ first touchdown, giving Wahoo a 6-0 lead.
The Tigers quickly evened up the score with a 45-yard completion down the Warrior sideline, capped off with completion in the back of the end zone, tying the game at 6-6, but that is the last time the Tigers would find the end zone. Josh Langemeier took the kickoff from North Bend back to the North Bend 48-yard line, giving the Warriors excellent field position. Kavan wasted no time, taking a toss play and running it toward the Tigers sideline, but quickly changed fields, cutting back and found a wall waiting for him down the Wahoo sideline, rambling to the 3-yard line. Abbott found Jacob Moline on a slant route, giving Wahoo a 14-6 lead, after Abbott found Ben Scheef on another slant route for the 2 pt. conversion.
The Warrior defense also quickly found the end zone, when Langemeier intercepted a crossing route and ran it back 35 yards for a Wahoo touchdown. Kavan converted the 2 pt. conversion, giving Wahoo a 22-6 lead. The Wahoo defense, once again, stepped up their pressure forcing the Tigers into a punt on 4th down, giving Wahoo the ball deep in their own territory.
Wahoo quickly found the end zone again, on an option play from Abbott to Kavan, who split the Tiger defense for a 65-yard scoring run, giving Wahoo a 28-6 lead. The Warrior defense withstood a drive by North Bend and stopped them on the Wahoo 20-yard line. The Wahoo offense, once again, quickly took advantage of the North Bend defense, with Abbott finding Kavan for an 80-yard touchdown reception, extending the Wahoo lead to 34-6 at halftime.
The Tigers mounted a drive of their own, but the Warrior defense tightened up, getting the ball back on downs at the Wahoo 5-yard line. The Warriors shifted field position quickly when Abbott found Scheef for a 30-yard pass down the Wahoo sideline. Kavan took an Abbott handoff down the middle of the Tiger defense, for a 65-yard touchdown, giving Wahoo a 42-6 lead after the 2 pt. conversion pass from Abbott to Scheef was successful.
The Wahoo defense rose to the occasion, once again, when Langemeier intercepted his second North Bend pass, weaving between the Tiger players to the North Bend 40-yard line. Wahoo moved the ball down the field on Langemeier’s runs of 14 and 8 yards. Abbott then found Brandon Ford for a 12-yard gain and a Warrior first down. Langemeier finished off the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run, giving the Warriors a 50-6 victory, after the 2 pt. conversion by Ford.

The Warrior 9th/10th grade team scored early and often against Mt. Michael to come away with a 38-8 victory over the Knights at Mt. Michael High School on September 30, 2010.
The Warriors received the opening kickoff and saw Ben Scheef take the low, lined kick and race 75-yards down the Wahoo sideline to find the end zone, giving Wahoo a 6-0 lead, 12 seconds into the game.
The Wahoo defense quickly forced a three-and-out, giving the Warriors the ball on the Wahoo 45-yard line to start their first offensive possession. Kirk Lindstrom took the opening handoff from Scheef and turned on the jets up the Wahoo sideline for a 42-yard gain, giving Wahoo a first and goal. The Warriors got the ball down to the 2-yard line before the drive stalled, giving the Knights the ball.
The Warrior defense hammered the Knights’ receivers, forcing several drops on their second series, forcing another punt, which was blocked by Ty Phillips, giving the Warriors excellent field position, once again. Scheef quickly found Phillips on a short, slant route for the Warriors’ second score of the day. Scheef, once again, found Phillips on a pass over a Knight defender, to give the Warriors a 14-0 lead.
The Knights’ offense found success through the air on their next possession, hitting a long pass up the middle, moving the ball past midfield, but a combination of penalties on the Knights slowed their progress. The Warrior defense regrouped, forcing a fumble by a Knight receiver, which was recovered by Scheef, giving the ball back to Wahoo. The Wahoo offense sputtered on their next possession, with the Warriors having to punt from their own 35-yard line. Scheef booted a high kick to the Knights’ punt returner, giving the Warrior defenders time to race down the field and deliver a blow to the returner, knocking the ball loose and recovered by Wahoo.
Wahoo relied on the legs of Lindstrom to move the ball down the field, on consecutive runs of 15 and 12-yards, moving the ball into Knights’ territory. Scheef then kept the ball on a quarterback boot, finding the edge against the Knights’ defense and a 22-yard gain, giving the Warriors another first down. The Warriors found themselves in a fourth-and-goal, but were unable to convert when a pass was dropped in the end zone, giving the Knights the ball on the 4-yard line.
The Warrior defense held strong, forcing the Knights into a fourth down punt from their 2-yard line. After an ill-advised fake punt attempt, the Warriors took over on offense from the 4-yard line. Wahoo quickly found the end zone on a 3-yard run by Andrew Vech. Scheef was able to convert the 2 pt. conversion, giving Wahoo a 22-0 lead. The Knights were finally able to get onto the scoreboard when they hit a long pass up the middle to close the lead to 22-8 going into half, after the 2 pt. conversion.
The Warrior defense came out firing, forcing the Knights into a quick three-and-out, giving Wahoo excellent field position near midfield. Wahoo pounded the ball behind their offensive line, with Lindstrom and Scheef carrying the load, accounting for 42 of the 45-yards on the series. The series was capped off by a 4-yard run by Lindstrom, with Scheef converting the 2 pt. conversion to give Wahoo a 30-8 lead.
The Wahoo defense, once again, rose to the occasion, with Jonathan Hollman recovering a Knights fumble, giving the Warriors the ball near midfield. The Wahoo offense sputtered and was forced to punt, giving the Knights the ball on their own 35-yard line.
Both teams traded offensive and defensive series, with Lindstrom intercepting a Knights pass, giving the Warriors the ball for their final scoring drive. The Warriors moved the ball down the field with Kyle Wobker taking a toss play and shaking a Knights defender to move the chains for a Wahoo first down. Scheef was able to hit Hollman on a backside slant pass for a 16-yard gain. Scheef ran the veer to perfection, finding a seam and running for a 20-yard gain. Lindstrom took a handoff from Scheef and rumbled for a 13-yard gain up the Wahoo sideline. After losing the ball on an exchange, the Warriors found themselves on the 9-yard line. Scheef found the endzone on a quarterback boot, giving Wahoo the 38-8 victory, after the successful 2 pt. conversion by Scheef.

The Wahoo JV football team traveled East down Highway 92 to face the Yutan JV squad at Yutan High School on September 27, 2010.
The Warriors put their stamp on the game quickly with an electrifying 65-yard kickoff by Tyler Kavan, who took a low line drive kick and was able to get to the edge and outrun the Chieftain kickoff coverage. Jonathan Abbott found Kavan on a short pass for the 2 pt. conversion giving the Warriors a quick 8-0 lead, 0:15 seconds into the contest. The Wahoo defense flexed its muscles, and forced a three-and-out, forcing a Yutan punt. The Warriors found themselves in excellent field position when the Chieftains snapped the ball over their punter’s head, and Wahoo was able to recover the ball on the 8-yard line.
The Warriors made quick work of the short field position, with Kyle Zeleny rumbling over two Yutan defenders to find the end zone for another Wahoo touchdown. Wahoo was unable to convert the 2 pt. conversion, giving the Warriors a 14-0 lead. Yutan was able to move the ball down the field on their next possession, using their passing game to complete some short passes, under the Warrior defensive coverage. The Warrior defense stepped up, with Ty Phillips stripping the ball from a Chieftain receiver and recovering the fumble on the Wahoo 30-yard line.
Wahoo moved the ball down the field, but a combination of penalties and missed blocks forced a change of possession, when the Warriors failed to convert a 4th down run, giving Yutan the ball on the 50-yard line. The Warrior defense stepped up forcing another three-and-out, with Zeleny getting a hand on the Yutan punt, giving Wahoo the ball on the Wahoo 38-yard line.
Wahoo coughed up the ball when Abbott’s pass to Jacob Moline was tipped and intercepted by a Yutan defender, giving them a short field on offense. But the Warrior defense quickly responded with Josh Langemeier breaking on a ball intended for a Yutan receiver and taking it 85-yards to the house for another Wahoo touchdown. Abbott found Kavan on a short pass, to give Wahoo the 22-0 lead.
Yutan, once again, was able to move the ball down the field using their short passing game, but their drive was stopped short when Seth Lindgren intercepted a Yutan pass returning it 20-yards to the 50-yard line. The Warriors moved the ball down the field with runs by Kavan and Abbott, but Yutan forced the Warriors into a punting down. The Warriors used a fake punt conversion by Abbott to keep possession of the ball. Wahoo quickly moved the ball with Kavan carrying the load, with Langemeier delivering a crushing block on the perimeter to spring Kavan. Abbott added two more first downs on quarterback scrambles, putting the Warriors into scoring position. Kavan found the edge on his next run on a toss play, giving the Warrior their fourth touchdown on the day and a 28-0 lead, after the failed 2 pt. conversion.
Yutan found the end zone on their next possession on a long throw, giving the Warriors the 28-6 lead. The Warriors went into hurry-up mode before the half, with Abbott finding Zeleny on a screen pass for a 25-yard gain. With time running out, Abbott scrambled to his right, but found the Warrior receivers’ covered but managed to get off a pass across his body to Zeleny, with a Yutan defender hanging off of him. Zeleny sliced through the Yutan defense leaping into the end zone after a 30-yard scamper, giving the Warriors the 34-6 lead at halftime, after the failed 2 pt. conversion.
The Warriors forced a three-and-out on its first defensive possession, giving Wahoo the ball on the Wahoo 30 yard line. After two short runs by Kavan, Abbott found Ben Scheef on a 60-yard pass down the sideline for another Warrior touchdown. Langemeier found the end zone on a 3-yard toss play for the 2 pt. conversion, giving the Warriors the 42-6 lead. Yutan was able to find the end zone one last time in the game, making the final score 42-14, giving Wahoo the victory.
The Warriors next game will be on Thursday, September 30th at Mt. Michael at 4:30 p.m.

The Warriors established themselves on the ground right away on their first offensive possession, starting with a 5-yard gain by Kyle Zeleny. Tyler Kavan rumbled 12-yards up the Arlington sideline on the next play, followed by another 7-yard run up the middle by Zeleny. Kavan scampered 10-yards up the Warrior sideline, but fumbled on the play, giving the Eagles the ball.
The Warrior defense quickly forced a 3-and-out, giving Wahoo the ball on the 45-yard line. Jonathan Abbott found Josh Langemeier on a screen pass for 8 yards. Abbott then found Kavan on another screen pass for another Warrior first down. Zeleny found a crease in the Eagles defense for a 14-yard gain up the middle, moving the Warriors across midfield. Kavan collected 16 yards on two runs, pushing the Warriors near the red zone. After a 10-yard loss, Abbott was able to get back to the original line of scrimmage on a quarterback keeper. Abbott found Kavan on a 24-yard strike, giving the Warriors their first score of the night. Abbott found Kavan on a swing pass for the 2-point conversion, giving the Warriors an 8-0 lead.
On defense, the Warriors forced the Eagles into a 3rd and long, with Ben Scheef stepping in front of an Arlington pass, taking the interception 37 yards to the 3-yard line, giving the Warriors a first and goal on offense. Langemeier found the edge on a toss play, giving Wahoo their second score of the night. Abbott found Zeleny on a short pass for the 2-point conversion, giving the Warriors a 16-0 lead.
The Warrior defense created another turnover on the next series, with Dylan Jaskulski forcing a fumble, recovered by Parker Nicholls, giving Wahoo the ball near midfield. The Warriors made short work on the Eagles defense with Abbott placing a perfect pass into the hands of Jacob Moline for a 46-yard touchdown pass down the Warrior sideline for the third score of the night. The Warriors extended the lead to 22-0, after the failed 2-point conversion.
In the second quarter, the Warriors continued their relentless defense forcing another Eagle punt on downs, giving Wahoo the ball near midfield again. The Warriors started their drive behind the legs of Langemeier, who broke a 36-yard run down the Wahoo sideline. Penalties stalled out the drive on the Eagles’ 30-yard line, giving Arlington the ball back on offense.
The Eagles and Warriors traded three-and-outs on the next two possessions to end the second quarter. After another three-and-out by the Warrior defense, the Wahoo offense came to life quickly with Kavan gashing the Eagle’s defense for a 78-yard touchdown up the Warrior sideline. The 2-point conversion failed, giving Wahoo a 28-0 lead.
The Warrior defense, once again, forced a three-and-out, giving Wahoo the ball on the Eagles 40-yard line. After runs by Langemeier to move the ball to the Eagles’ 20-yard line, Scheef found Ty Phillips for the 20-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone, giving the Warriors a 34-0 lead, after the 2-point conversion failed.
After an Eagles turnover, Kavan once again found the end zone on a 42-yard scamper down the Arlington sideline for a touchdown. Zeleny was able to rumble into the end zone for the 2-point conversion giving the Warriors a 42-0 lead.

Warrior Fresh/Soph Team Fights Hard in Victory over Seward
Warriors Host Arlington September 20
Wahoo 35
Raymond Central 24
It was a tale of two quarters for the Wahoo freshmen and sophomore football team as they were able to take a quick start in the first quarter, see their lead dwindle in the second quarter, combined with a second half rebirth to come away with a 36-24 victory over Seward at Wahoo High School on September 16, 2010.
The Warrior sophomores got off to a lightning quick start, with Josh Langemeier, slashing through the Bluejay kickoff team to take the opening kickoff back 60 yards for a Warrior touchdown. Jonathan Abbott hit Tyler Kavan for a 3-yard pass for the 2-point conversion, giving the Warriors an 8-0 lead.
The Wahoo defense quickly forced the Bluejays into a 4th down situation that the Bluejays tried to convert into a first down on a quarterback keep, but a penalty forced Seward into punting. The Warrior defense applied pressure, forcing a 5-yard punt from Seward.
The Warrior offense converted a first down when Abbott found Kavan on a swing pass, for a 22-yard gain down the Wahoo sideline. After consecutive runs by Kavan, Abbott took the ball on a boot leg and scrambled to the 2-yard line, setting up Kyle Zeleny for the 2-yard touchdown plunge, putting the Warriors up 14-0, after the failed 2-point conversion.
On the ensuing kickoff, Langemeier’s kick bounced off a Mustang player who was also hit by Kirk Lindstrom, who recovered the ball for the Warriors. Wahoo immediately capitalized off the Bluejay turnover, with a 24-yard touchdown completion from Abbott to Jacob Moline. The Warriors lead increased to 20-0, after another failed 2-point attempt.
The second quarter saw the Warriors turn to their freshmen, who experienced some growing pains as the Bluejays man-handled the Warrior offense, forcing them into two inceptions, that were converted into scores for the Bluejays. The Bluejays also found the end zone on a pass completion near the end of the first half, giving the Warriors a slim 20-18 lead at halftime.
The Warriors spent the halftime cleaning up the mistakes that were made in the second quarter and coming up with a game plan to establish themselves on the ground with their running game. The Warriors began the half on defense, forcing a three-and-out for the Mustangs.
On offense, Ben Scheef hit Jonathan Hollman for a 15-yard gain on the opening series in the second half for Wahoo. Lindstrom then carried the load for Wahoo, on two carries for 32-yards, capping it off with a 2-yard plunge for a Warrior touchdown. Lindstrom also converted the 2 pt. conversion, giving the Warriors a 26-18 lead.
The Bluejays responded with a touchdown on a long pass down the Warrior sideline, closing the lead to 26-24 for Wahoo.
The Warriors were able to rise to the occasion, behind the running of Lindstrom, who ran for 28-yards on four carries, to put Wahoo into scoring position. The Warriors capped off the drive when Scheef connected with Lindstrom on a 22-yard screen pass for a Warrior touchdown. Scheef kept the ball on a quarterback sneak to cap off the scoring for the Warriors, giving them the 35-24 victory.
The entire Warrior football coaching staff would like to say how proud they are of the effort that our Wahoo players exhibited, especially during the second half, in overcoming adversity and coming together as a team.
The Warriors’ next game will be on Monday, September 20 at home versus Arlington at 6:00 p.m.

The Wahoo JV football team started their season with a knockdown drag out battle with Raymond Central on the campus of Raymond Central High School on September 7, 2010.
The Warriors faced a more experienced junior dominated Mustang squad in their opener to the junior varsity season. Although inexperienced, the Warriors played physically throughout the game, giving the Mustangs all they could handle for four quarters.
The Warriors got off to a quick start on defense, forcing a three-and-out from the Mustangs. After pinning Raymond Central deep, the Warrior punt block team allowed Wahoo to get on the scoreboard first when Ty Phillips, a freshman transfer from Raymond Central, was able to block the punt from his old alma mater, which was scooped up and scored by Jonathan Abbott. Abbott was able to find Josh Langemeier on a short pass to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead, after the 2 pt. conversion.
On the next series, the Warrior defense once again rose to the occasion, forcing the Mustangs to punt, but the Wahoo inexperience showed as the punt was touched by a Warrior and recovered by the Mustangs, giving them new life on offense.
After a Mustang first down, the Warrior defense came back to life, forcing a fumble on a combination of hits from Dylan Jaskulski and Langemeier, which was recovered by Jack Putnam.
Offensively, the Warriors began their march around midfield, with a 6-yard run up the middle by Abbott, followed by a 35-yard run for a 25-yard gain, off of a misplayed pitch from Langemeier, giving the Warriors a first down. After a QB and a 3-yard loss on successive plays, due to the Mustang defensive pressure, Abbott scrambled to find a streaking Brandon Zetocka for a 32-yard score through the air. Langemeier took a pitch from Abbott to the left, outracing the Mustang defenders for the 2 pt. conversion, giving the Warriors a 16-0 lead.
After the score, the varsity experience for the Mustangs took hold, as they were able to tighten up their offensive and defensive lines and apply pressure to the young Warrior front line, imposing their will throughout the remainder of the game. The Mustangs used a physical, seven-play drive to move the ball down the field on the Warrior defense. The score and extra point narrowed the lead to 16-7 for the Warriors.
The Warriors were able to move the ball down the field against the Mustang defense with Abbott finding Jake Wilson in the corner of the end zone for an apparent Warrior touchdown, but Wilson was called out of bounds by a late arriving official, nullifying the score. The fourth down attempt was stopped keeping the score at 16-7 in favor of Wahoo.
The Mustangs put together a 10-play drive that was ended on a Wilson interception that was returned to the Mustang 48 yard line, but Wilson was injured at the end of the play, with a dislocated knee cap. After the injury, the Warriors were unable to regain their momentum, with the Mustangs intercepting the pass from Abbott to Langemeier, returning it to the Warrior 35-yard line.
The Mustangs drove to the Warrior 10-yard line, when Wahoo had a chance to turn the table and get the ball back on an interception, but the ball was deflected into the air and into the hands of a Mustang receiver giving them the ball on the 1-yard line. The Mustang QB plunged forward for a score closing the gap to 16-14 Wahoo.
The Warrior offense struggled to handle the physical, blitzing Mustang defense the entire second half, going three-and-out several times. The Mustangs also struggled on offense, failing to convert on 4th down plays multiple times during the half. Both teams traded punches multiple times throughout the game in the second half with the Mustangs putting together two long scoring drives to take the lead, after a touchdown and field goal by the Mustangs, giving them a 24-16 lead. But the Warriors were not out of it yet.
On the kickoff return, Langemeier bobbled the return but quickly found the seam up the middle and scampered to a 65-yard touchdown, breathing life into the Warriors. The Warriors kicked the onside, which was recovered by Langemeier after a jarring hit from Jacob Moline that unfortunately injured a Mustang defender, sending him to the hospital with a concussion. The Warriors, however, were unable to convert the recovery into points, giving the Mustangs the 22-24 victory over Wahoo.

The Wahoo freshmen and sophomore football team started its season on a high note with a 30-18 victory over Bishop Neumann at Wayne Reeves field at Bishop Neumann High School on September 2, 2010.
The Warriors got off to a sloppy start on offense, with a fumble on the center and quarterback exchange that gave the Cavaliers a short field to work with, starting on the Warrior 35 yard line. The Wahoo defense played strong but was unable to get stops on two consecutive third and longs, which gave the ball to the Cavaliers on the three-yard line. They were able to punch it in for the first score of the game, but the point after attempt was blocked, giving Bishop Neumann the early 0-6 lead.
The Warriors responded on offense with their own nine-play scoring drive highlighted by a 20-yard run by Josh Langemeier on the opening play of the drive. Jonathan Abbott connected with Tyler Kavan for a 12-yard gain on the next play of the series, moving the Warriors across midfield. Wahoo continued to move the ball with Abbott pitching the ball to Langemeier on the next play, gaining 16 more yards. The drive began to stall on two incomplete passes in a row, when Abbott scampered around the right end for an 8-yard gain and a much needed first down. Abbott connected with Jake Wilson on a 20-yard touchdown pass to get the Warriors on the scoreboard. Kavan completed the 2 pt. conversion to give the Warriors an 8-6 lead.
The young Warrior defense experienced some growing pains with penalties and misalignment dominating the remainder of the game, but we able to force the Cavalier offense into fourth down, with the punt block team forcing a 10-yard punt by the Bishop Neumann special teams.
Wahoo once again was up to the challenge offensively, quickly scoring on a two-play drive highlighted by a 5-yard gain by Langemeier on first down. After a false start by the offensive line, Langemeier took a toss from Abbott to the right and quickly cut across the field, aided by a tremendous look-out block from Wilson, freeing up Langemeier to turn it up the Warrior sideline for a 45-yard touchdown run. Abbott connected with Ben Scheef for the 2 pt. conversion, giving the Warriors a 14-6 lead.
The Warrior defense took a “bend but don’t break” mentality on the next series, playing hard but making some freshmen mistakes along the way, allowing the Cavaliers to move the ball into Wahoo territory during their nine-play drive. The Warrior defense stepped up and forced a fumble, recovered by Jacob Moline, giving the Warriors the ball back on offense.
The Warrior offense took advantage of the defensive moment, putting together a five play scoring drive highlighted by a 6-yard run by Langemeier on the opening play of the drive. Kavan showed his unselfishness taking turns at fullback and created a seam for another 12-yard run by Langemeier on second down. Abbott, once again, found Wilson open down the sideline for a 35-yard gain, putting the Warriors in scoring position. After a hard-fought four yards from Kavan, Abbott was able to find Moline on a 20-yard slant play for a Wahoo score. Kavan gashed the Cavalier defense for the 2 pt. conversion, giving the Warriors a 22-6 lead going into halftime.
The Cavaliers received the ball in the second half and used their veer offense to keep the young, Warrior defenders off-balance, causing numerous misalignments, allowing Bishop Neumann to chew up all but 38 seconds of the third quarter on their final scoring drive of the game, closing the lead to 22-12, after the failed 2 pt. conversion.
The Warriors’ quick strike attack, once again, flexed its muscles, putting together a two-play scoring drive highlighted by a 35-yard misdirection by Abbott, immediately putting the Warriors in scoring position. Langemeier finished off the drive with a 25-yard scamper around the right side, diving across the pylon to give Wahoo their final score of the game. Kirk Lindstrom dove into the end zone to give the Warriors their final margin of victory of 30-18.
The Warriors next game will be on Tuesday, September 7 at Raymond Central at 6:00 p.m.
