The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 53-47 in the Subdistrict Final at Waverly.
A Max Cook trey, followed by a steal and lay up, tied the game at 14 after one quarter of play.
The game was also tied at halftime, 21-21.
The Cavaliers scored the first two baskets of the second half to open up a 25-21 lead. The lead was six for Neumann after three quarters of play at 35-29.
Two Jon Abbott free throws to start the fourth quarter cut the lead to 35-31. A Travis Ahrens trey pushed the lead back to 38-31. Two Casey Brown free throws, followed by a Cook trey cut the lead to 38-36, but 12 fourth quarter points from Ahrens proved to be the difference, as the Cavaliers went on to the 53-47 win.
“One of our strengths all year has been the way we have taken care of the ball, and not turned it over, but we had 19 turnovers tonight, including five of those where the ball just went through our hands. Travis Ahrens had a tremendous game for Neumann. He hit big shots all night long. In spite of Ahrens’ big night, I thought our troubles were more on the offensive end, than the defensive end. We just could not get in a rhythm offensively, and you have to give Neumann a lot of credit for that. They played excellent defensive, and really kept Max from getting many open looks,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors with 13 points and three steals. Ben Scheef added ten points and five boards. Brown had nine points and four boards. Brook Stuart added eight points and three assists.
Neumann outrebounded the Warriors 23-17, and shot 55 percent from the field compared to 40 percent for the Warriors.
Wahoo falls to 22-3, and now must wait to see if they qualify for a wildcard for the State Tournament.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Conestoga Cougars 82-60 in the first round of Subdistricts at Waverly.
The Warriors’ offense was clicking early as they jumped out to a 32-15 lead after one quarter. Max Cook had eight first quarter points, Ben Scheef had seven, and Casey Brown had six.
The margin pretty much stayed the same in the second quarter. The halftime score was 47-30.
Wahoo broke the game open in the third quarter by outscoring the Cougars 22-10 to take a 69-40 lead into the fourth quarter. The Warriors scored the first five points of the fourth quarter for their largest lead of the game at 74-40, before ending up with the 82-60 win.
“Offensively, we played very well. We had excellent ball movement, especially early. I was a little concerned because I don’t think we defended the way that we need to, and we will need to defend much better on Thursday night. Our two seniors, Max Cook and Casey Brown, both had great nights for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors with 22 points on 7-12 shooting from the field, and 6-6 shooting from the free throw line, to go with four steals and four assists. Brown had a double-double with 15 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and ten boards. Scheef added ten points and four assists. Jon Abbott had eight points and four boards. Quinn McGill had six points, five boards, six steals and five assists. Tyler Kavan had seven points and five boards. Brook Stuart added six points.
Wahoo shot 51.8 percent (29-56) from the field and 76 percent (19-25) from the free throw line. Wahoo outrebounded the Cougars 37-27, and forced 22 Conestoga turnovers.
Wahoo improves to 22-2, and will face Bishop Neumann on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Waverly High School in the Subdistrict Final.

The Warriors extended the lead in the third quarter and led 48-33 after three quarters, before ending with the 19-point win at 66-47.

Seniors Cook and Casey Brown led five Warriors in double figures with 14 points apiece. Cook also had four rebounds, four steals, and four assists. Brown also had four boards. Stuart and Abbott contributed 11 points apiece, and Ben Scheef added ten points. Quinn McGill had a team-high seven rebounds and four steals.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 75-73 in overtime after Ben Scheef made a bucket with one second left off of a feed from Max Cook.
The Warriors found themselves down 14 to 12 after one period of play. Wahoo took the lead in the second quarter and was up six at 33-27, before the Crusaders’ Tyler Barrientos converted a three-point play to make it 33-30 at halftime. The Warriors’ Casey Brown was 9-9 from the line in the first half.
The Crusaders scored the first seven points of the half to take a 37-33 lead. Scheef then hit treys on three of the next four Warrior possessions, the last one giving Wahoo a 42-41 lead. Jon Abbott hit two free throws at the end of the quarter to put Wahoo up 52-48 after three.
The Warriors could not shake the Crusaders in the fourth quarter, as GICC hit four treys in the quarter. Two Brook Stuart free throws gave the Warriors a 68-63 lead with a minute left. A GICC free throw cut the lead to 68-64. Scheef then hit a free throw to make it 69-64. A Barrientos trey cut the lead to 69-67 with 20 seconds left.
A Warrior turnover followed, and on the ensuing trip, the Crusaders’ Yohanna Ghafan, a freshman, converted a missed shot into a putback, to tie the game with ten seconds left. A last-second Warrior shot was off the mark, and the game went to overtime, tied at 69.
The Crusaders scored first in the overtime to go up 71-69. Cook then hit two free throws to tie it up at 71. The Warriors’ Quinn McGill hit two big free throws with 30 seconds left to put Wahoo up 73-71. Trevor Cornelius hit a jumper for the Crusaders to tie it with 12 seconds left. Cook then pushed the ball up the floor for the Warriors and found Scheef in the lane. Scheef’s shot rolled in with one second left to give the Warriors the win 75-73.
“We survived! That is about all I can say. I don’t feel like we played one of our better games, but GICC deserved a lot of credit for knocking down a lot of perimeter shots, especially in the second half. Casey Brown provided a lot of offense in the first half for us. Jon Abbott played a terrific game for us. Quinn McGill hit two huge free throws for us late, and gave us some great minutes off of the bench. Ben Scheef’s three treys in the third quarter were huge, because we were really struggling until those got us going a little bit. Max Cook was certainly not himself, as he was just returning from mono, but made a couple of big free throws in overtime, and did a great job of finding Ben at the end of the game. Brook Stuart made two big free throws towards the end of regulation. We were excited to escape with the win,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Scheef led the Warriors with 23 points and 12 boards. Abbott had 18 points on 7-9 shooting from the field, along with nine boards and four steals. Brown added 13 points on 9-9 shooting from the free throw line. McGill added eight points and five steals. Cook contributed six points in limited minutes.
Wahoo improves to 18-2, while GICC falls to 7-11. The Warriors will next host Ashland-Greenwood on Saturday afternoon.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 66-42 on Tuesday night at Wahoo.
The Warriors jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one quarter, behind seven first quarter points from Tyler Kavan.
The lead grew to eight in the second quarter after back-to-back buckets from Ben Scheef. A Shamrock trey at the end of the half cut the lead to 27-22 at halftime.
The Warriors extended their lead throughout the third quarter. Seven third quarter points from Casey Brown and seven from Scheef pushed the Warrior lead to 48-35 after three quarters.
A 9-2 Warrior run to start the fourth quarter gave the Warriors a 57-37 lead to break the game wide open. Quinn McGill started the run with a lay up, followed by baskets from Jon Abbott, a McGill lay up and baskets from Kavan and Brown. The Warriors would outscore the Shamrocks 18-7 in the fourth quarter to make the final 66-42.
“We were a little sluggish in the first half. We were not getting after them defensively like we need to, and we missed a lot of point blank shots that could have opened up the lead. I thought we played a really nice second half though, and it was good to see us take control on the game in the third quarter. Casey Brown had another huge night for us offensively, Ben Scheef played well for us, and Tyler Kavan and Quinn McGill just give us great effort and athleticism,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Brown led the Warriors with 23 points on 3-5 shooting from three-point range and six boards. Scheef had 18 points, nine boards, three assists and three steals. Kavan added 11 points. McGill contributed six points, nine boards, three steals, and five assists. Abbott had five boards, four steals, and three assists to go with his six points.
The Warriors forced 24 Shamrock turnovers, and held Scotus to just 34 percent shooting from the field.
Wahoo improves to 17-2 and will travel to Grand Island Central Catholic on Thursday to take on the Crusaders. Scotus falls to 8-11.

The game was close for the first quarter and a half. The Eagles led 13-11 after one quarter. Arlington still led 20-19 after a Trevor Koger field goal.
The Warriors then went on a 14-0 run. Casey Brown started the run with a field goal to take a 21-20 lead. Brook Stuart then hit two free throws, followed by a Jon Abbott field goal. A Tyler Kavan lay up, a Josh Langemeier steal and lay up, followed by a four-point play from Brown with five seconds left put Wahoo up 33-20. Stuart’s jumper, Ben Scheef’s three-point play, Brown’s trey, and Kavan’s free throw put the Warriors up by 22. Wahoo would outscore the Eagles 29-9 in the third quarter to take a 63-31 lead after three quarters, before going on to the 77-48 win.
The Warriors played without leading scorer Max Cook, who came down with a case of mono, and is out indefinitely.
Senior Brown led the Warriors with 22 points on 8-13 shooting from the field, with 17 of those points coming in the first half. Mitch Shukis had 12 points off the bench on 5-5 shooting from the field, with five boards. Kavan had ten points with four steals. Scheef added nine points. Quinn McGill had five assists and three steals in his first varsity game with the Warriors.
“We found out we would not have Max about five minutes before our bus left. The kids did a terrific job of stepping up and getting the job done without Max. Casey Brown had a great night for us. His shooting in the first half gave us the chance to open up the lead and get a little separation from them. Mitch Shukis played a great game for us and gave us some great minutes after Ben Scheef got in foul trouble early. Tyler Kavan gave a great effort again, and Quinn McGill played very well in his first game for us. Defensively we really got after them, and the fact that we turned them over 32 times in the game was huge,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Wahoo was 28-51 (54.9%) from the field and 14-18 (77.8%) from the line. Wahoo forced 32 Arlington turnovers, while committing just 15 themselves.
Wahoo improves to 16-2, while Arlington drops to 10-6. Wahoo will next host Columbus Scotus on Tuesday night. The Warriors were supposed to play at GICC on Saturday, but due to the snow storm, the game has been moved to next Thursday.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bennington Badgers 49-47 to win the Capitol Conference Tournament on Saturday night.
The Badgers jumped out to leads of 7-0, 9-2 and 15-5 in the first quarter against the Warriors. Casey Brown got the Warriors started by scoring their first five points of the game. A Tyler Kavan putback at the end of the quarter cut the Badger lead to 17-13 after one quarter.
The Badgers still led 22-15 early in the second quarter, when the Warriors went on a 7-0 run, fueled by a Jon Abbott bucket, a Brown basket, a Max Cook bucket, and an Abbott free throw tied the game at 22. A Cook trey gave the Warriors their first lead at 25-24. A Ben Scheef basket at the end of the half put Wahoo up 31-29 at halftime.
A Cook trey gave the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 41-35. Grant Siekman’s fourth trey of the night cut the lead to 41-38. A Cook basket gave the Warriors a three-point lead at 43-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Badgers scored the first four points of the quarter to take a 44-43 lead. A Cook basket put the Warriors back up at 45-44 with 4 minutes left. A Cook free throw and an Abbott free throw extended the lead to three at 47-44 with 2:30 left. A Badger free throw cut the lead to 47-45. Two Brook Stuart free throws with 1:20 left ended up being the winning free throws as they put the Warriors up 49-45. A Michael Wickham bucket with 55 seconds left cut the lead to 49-47. Following a missed Warrior free throw with 25 seconds left, the Badgers got the ball back with a chance to tie or win the game, but an errant pass with two seconds left gave the ball back to the Warriors, and they were able to inbound the ball and run out the clock for the win.
“I am very proud of our kids’ efforts tonight. We were not as sharp and did not play as well as last night, but Bennington had an awful lot to do with that. They play excellent defense, and they are a big, strong, physical team that rebounds extremely well. Our kids found a way to get it done tonight, and they should feel very good about winning the Conference Tournament for the second year in a row. Casey Brown really got us started offensively in the first quarter, and I thought he went and got some tough rebounds in the fourth quarter. Max Cook made a lot of big plays for us on both sides of the floor, and Brook Stuart’s two free throws with 1:20 left turned out to be the difference,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
The Badgers outrebounded the Warriors 29-19, but committed 20 turnovers to just four for the Warriors.
Cook led the Warriors with 19 points, six steals, and three assists. Abbott had ten points and three steals. Brown added nine points and six boards.
The Warriors improved to 15-2 and will travel to Arlington on Friday and to Grand Island Central Catholic on Saturday.

After Kavan’s basket, and two free throws from Ben Scheef, the Warriors had their largest lead of the game at 69-30. The Mustangs were able to outscore the Warriors 19-6 in the fourth quarter as reserves finished up for the Warriors.
“Our kids were very ready to go tonight, and just gave a fantastic effort. It was a total team win. Everybody who played for us played well tonight. Our offensive execution was as sharp as it has been all year. Tyler Kavan’s effort was tremendous. Brook Stuart and Josh Langemeier shot it very well for us. Ben Scheef did a great job on the glass, Casey Brown, Jon Abbott, and Max Cook played terrific for us as well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

I thought our two seniors, Max Cook and Casey Brown, both played very well for us tonight. Our defense in the first half was very good. Whenever you can hold a team to ten points in a half, you have to feel good about that,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Norfolk Catholic Knights 59-46 on Friday night in Norfolk.
The Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the game. The Warriors clawed back towards the end of the first quarter, and free throws from Mitch Shukis and Max Cook tied the game up at 10. A Jordan Bellar trey put the Knights up 13-10 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, a Jon Abbott bucket and Cook free throw gave the Warriors a 21-20 lead. A three from Dylan Borer and a Riley Knake bucket put the Knights up 25-21 at halftime.
The Warriors scored the first seven points of the second half on two Abbott free throws, a three-point play from Ben Scheef, and a putback from Scheef to go up 28-25. The Warriors trailed 35-34 after a Cook free throw, but the Knights would go on a 7-0 run to end the quarter and put the Knights up 42-34 after three.

“I thought our effort was very good. We gave ourselves a chance early in the fourth, but we left some points at the free throw line, and they seemed to hit some big shots every time we got close. They are a big, athletic team, that plays good defense and rebounds well, and when they shoot it like that, they are tough to beat,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors on 21 point and six boards. Abbott had ten points, four boards, and three steals. Scheef added seven points and eight boards. Casey Brown had five boards.
The Warriors fall to 12-2, while Norfolk Catholic improves to 10-3. The Warriors will next face Syracuse at home on Tuesday night in the first round of the Capitol Conference tournament.

The Wahoo Warriors suffered their first loss of the year at the hands of the Raymond Central Mustangs on Tuesday night 65-60.
The Warriors got off to a good start and took an 18-10 lead after one quarter, behind five points from Tyler Kavan and Ben Scheef.
Wahoo continued to increase the lead in the second quarter behind Brook Stuart’s second and third trey of the half. Wahoo had their biggest lead of the night at 17, 35-18 after Scheef’s basket, before four consecutive free throws from Nick Christensen cut the Warrior lead to 35-22 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Mustangs opened the half with a 9-1 run and cut the Warrior lead to 36-31 after Christensen’s trey. A Max Cook basket, and trey from Stuart pushed the lead back to ten at 41-31.
The Mustangs would outscore the Warriors 15-6 the rest of the quarter and cut the Wahoo lead to 47-46 on another Christensen three pointer to end the quarter.

“This was a tough loss. We played a really good first half, and were really close to knocking them out of the game, but we let them close the lead to 13 right before half, and then the first two minutes of the third quarter, we let them back in the game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “They got some momentum, we got back on our heels, and just could not get the momentum switched back around. You have to give Central a lot of credit. They played a great second half, and Nick Christensen had a tremendous game for them.”
Cook led the Warriors with 15 points. Scheef added 14 points, and Stuart contributed 13 on 4-5 shooting from three-point range. Jon Abbott chipped in with nine points. Christensen led Central with 24 points.
The Warriors drop to 12-1, while Central is now 8-5. Wahoo travels to Norfolk on Friday to take on Norfolk Catholic, the defending Class C-1 State Champs.

The game was close for a quarter. The Warriors led 16-13 after one quarter. The Warriors opened it up in the second quarter outscoring D.C. 29-10 to take a 45-23 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Warriors outscored the Falcons 20-7 to lead 65-30 after three quarters.
“It was a good win for us. We played very well after the first quarter. It was good to see our press cause them some problems in the second quarter, and we were able to break the game open. We needed to play well going into a big week for us with games vs. Raymond Central and Norfolk Catholic,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Max Cook led the Warriors with 20 points, eight steals, five boards, and five assists. Jon Abbott had 13 points and six boards. Casey Brown added 12 points, while Ben Scheef contributed seven boards and seven assists. Tyler Kavan had four steals, and Jake Wilson had five rebounds.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Crete Cardinals 48-40 on Saturday afternoon in Crete.
Wahoo jumped out to a 12-6 lead after one quarter behind 8 first quarter points from Jon Abbott.
Max Cook caught fire from three-point range in the second quarter. The senior hit four treys as Wahoo built a 24-9 halftime lead.
In the fourth quarter, Crete went on a 9-2 run to cut the Warrior lead to 7 at 37-30 with six minutes left in the game. A Scheef free throw and six free throws from Cook pushed the lead back to 12 at 44-32. Crete would get no closer than eight the rest of the way, as the Warriors went on to the 48-40 win.
“I thought we played a very good first half. When you hold a team to nine first half points, you have to feel good about that. Jon got us started off well offensively in the first quarter, and Max had a huge second quarter. The second half, however, we struggled. We turned the ball over way too much. Free throw shooting has been a strength for us all year, but we really shot poorly from the free throw line tonight, and instead of being able to coast to the win, the game got much tighter than it needed to in the fourth quarter,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors with 24 points and four steals. Abbott added ten points. Tyler Kavan had four steals, and Scheef had seven rebounds.
Wahoo improves to 11-0, and will travel to Valley to take on D.C. West on Saturday.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated Capitol Conference foe Syracuse at Syracuse on Friday night 62-35.
The Warriors led just 15-13 after one quarter. In the second quarter, the Warriors scored the first eight points of the quarter. Casey Brown scored two of the baskets, Max Cook had a basket and free throw, and Ben Scheef added a free throw in the run to put Wahoo up 23-13.
The Rockets, though, would cut the Warrior lead to four at halftime 26-22. Syracuse’s Micah Buller had 15 of the Rockets’ 22 first half points.
The Warriors were able to take control in the second half. Wahoo outscored Syracuse 18-8 in the third quarter to take a 44-30 lead into the fourth quarter. Wahoo outscored Syracuse 18-5 in the fourth quarter to take the 62-35 win.
“We did not play a real sharp first half. We let them get too many open looks and they were able to knock them down. We also did not attack their box and one very well in the first half. It was good to see the kids settle down and play better in the second half, and they started playing with more energy and attacked their box and one much better,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors with 14 points. Jon Abbott and Brown each contributed 12, and Scheef added nine. Abbott also had six boards, three steals and three assists. Brown had five boards, a game high six steals and five assists. Scheef had a game-high 14 boards, four steals and four assists.
Wahoo improves to 10-0 and will travel to Crete on Saturday to face the Cardinals.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Elkhorn South Storm 64-54 in the finals of the Bishop Neumann Holiday Tournament.
The Warriors jumped out to a 15-13 lead after one quarter after a three-point play from Max Cook to end the quarter. Ben Scheef had six first quarter points.
The Warriors were up 18-16, when they went on a 10-0 run. A Casey Brown basket, followed by baskets from Jon Abbott, Scheef, Josh Langemeier, and two more free throws from Scheef, put Wahoo up 28-16. Elkhorn South would cut the lead to 30-25, before baskets from Cook and Brook Stuart put Wahoo up 34-25 at halftime.
The Storm scored first to open the second half to make it 34-27, but a Brown three, followed by two Cook free throws, two Scheef free throws, and a three-point play from Stuart gave the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 44-27.
The Warriors scored all 15 of their fourth quarter points from the foul line as they went 15-20 from the line. The great free throw shooting kept the Storm from seriously making a run, and the Storm was never able to cut the lead under eight in the fourth quarter. Cook was 5-6 from the line in the fourth quarter and Abbott was 3-4. Cook’s miss broke a streak of 34 consecutive free throws that the senior had made.
“This Holiday Tournament had four very good teams in it, so we are very excited to get the Tourney title. Casey Brown had a great game for us today. He hit some big shots and was just very active today, and got his hands on a number of passes,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Ben Scheef played very well for us also. Max Cook has played extremely well for us all year, but he is getting more scoring help now. Yesterday, Brook Stuart and Tyler Kavan really stepped up, and today it was Casey Brown, which is going to make us better and harder to defend. I loved the effort our kids gave yesterday and today. Jon Abbott also gave us some great minutes today after missing yesterday’s game with the flu.”
Cook led the Warriors with 19 points on 10-11 shooting from the line, along with six rebounds. Scheef contributed 15 points, eight boards, and four assists. Brown had 12 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor, with five boards, and three steals. For the game, the Warriors were 25-30 from the line (83 percent).
Wahoo improves to 9-0, and will next face Syracuse on the road next Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Christian Crusaders 63-60 in the first round of the Holiday Tournament at Bishop Neumann High School on Thursday night.
The Warriors jumped out to a 16-10 lead after one quarter, behind 8 first quarter points from senior Max Cook.
Two free throws from Cook, with three seconds left in the half, gave Wahoo a 25-19 halftime lead.
Three consecutive buckets from Cook put Wahoo up 45-36 with 3:00 left in the third. The Crusaders scored 11 straight points on four consecutive possessions, with two treys to end the quarter to put Christian up 46-45 going into the fourth quarter.
Wahoo trailed 51-50 early in the fourth. A Casey Brown basket put Wahoo up 52-51. A Ben Scheef lay up and two free throws from Tyler Kavan gave the Warriors a 56-52 lead.
After Christian cut the lead to 56-55, Brook Stuart hit a big trey to push the Warrior lead back to 4 at 59-55 with 2:30 left. Following a Crusader free throw, Cook hit two free throws to make it 61-56 with 2:00 left.
A Crusader basket made it 61-58. A Scheef free throw made it a 4-point Warrior lead at 62-58. Two Christian free throws cut the Warrior lead to 62-60 with 20 seconds left. Stuart hit a free throw with 5 seconds left to make it 63-60. The Crusaders missed a 25-foot shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime, and the Warriors escaped with the win.
“This was a terrific win for us over a very good team. Considering that we did not have Jon Abbott, who was home with the flu, it was a great night. Our kids gave an outstanding effort. Tyler Kavan was all over the place tonight. He played incredibly hard. Brook Stuart was tremendous tonight. His confidence grew with each shot he took. Max, Ben, and Casey all played terrific. Everybody who played tonight played very well for us. Brook and Ben both hit a big free throw for us late in the game, as did Max, who hit two big ones for us. Our kids are playing with a lot of poise in late game situations and finding ways to get it done,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors with 21 points, 7 boards, 6 assists, and 4 steals, with just one turnover. Stuart had a career-high 15 points on 5-9 shooting from the field. Scheef added 13 points and 7 boards. Kavan added 6 points and 6 boards, and Brown added 4 points, 5 boards, 3 assists, and 3 steals with 0 turnovers.
The Warriors improved to 8-0 with the win, and will now face Elkhorn South in the finals of the Holiday Tournament tomorrow night. Lincoln Christian drops to 6-2.

Wahoo stretched the lead to 43-22 at halftime, and led 75-35 after three quarters.
“After a hard fought, emotional game last night, I was worried as to how much energy we would have tonight, but our kids just did a great job. They played extremely hard. Our defense was very good, and we shared the ball and played very unselfishly. It was a very good way to head into the Holiday break,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Max Cook led the Warriors with 28 points, 6 steals, and 4 assists. Ben Scheef had 15 points, 10 boards, and 4 assists. Cook and Scheef were both 9-9 from the free throw line on the night. Jon Abbott had 14 points and 7 boards. Mitch Shukis added 10 points and 5 steals. Casey Brown contributed 9 points.
The Warriors forced 30 Pioneer turnovers, and out-rebounded Calhoun 34-25.

Senior Max Cook hit two free throws with 4.3 seconds left, and the Warriors survived a missed three at the buzzer to escape with the win. Centennial connected on 13 three-point shots in the game.
Wahoo led Wahoo 18-10 after one period. The Broncos hit three treys in the second quarter, and Wahoo led just 27-25 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Wahoo led 36-33 after a Jon Abbott free throw. Three straight treys from the Broncos, including one at the third quarter buzzer, put Centennial up 42-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
Centennial led 48-40 after another Kendall Gierhan trey with 4 minutes left. A Brook Stuart trey cut the lead to 48-43. Gierhan’s 6th trey of the night, with 2:30 left, put Centennial up 51-43. A second Stuart trey cut the lead to 51-46, with 2:00 left.
An Abbott drive and basket made it 51-48. Ben Scheef’s drive and basket cut the lead to 51-50 with 30 seconds left. Centennial missed three front ends of one and ones in the final 2 minutes. Wahoo got the ball back with 19 seconds left. A missed shot by the Warriors was rebounded by Cook, who was fouled on the put-back attempt with 4.3 seconds left. Cook hit both free throws, and Centennial then just missed a three at the buzzer, to allow the Warriors to survive.
“I am just very proud of our kids for climbing out of a big hole. When they hit the three to go up 8 with 2:30 left, it did not look good, but our kids did not panic, and made just enough plays to pull out the win. I think if your opponent hits 13 treys, and you are still able to get a win, then you should feel pretty good about that. We were very fortunate though in that as well as they shot from the three-point line, they missed some crucial free throws in the last three minutes,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Max hit two huge free throws to give us the lead with 4 seconds left, but that is what seniors do. Casey Brown got us some huge rebounds down the stretch. Brook Stuart hit a couple of very big threes in the fourth to give us a chance to come back. Ben Scheef had a couple of big plays for us in the fourth, as did Jon Abbott. It was a complete team win.”
Centennial was 13-30 from the three-point line. Kendall Gierhan hit six treys for 22 points. Wahoo was led by Cook with 13 points, Abbott contributed 12 points, and Scheef added 11. Brown and Cook both had 8 boards, and Scheef added 7 rebounds.
Wahoo improves to 6-0, while Centennial drops to 3-2. Wahoo travels to Fort Calhoun today to take on the Pioneers.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the West Point-Beemer Cadets 77-42 on Tuesday night.
The Warriors faced some adversity early in the first minute of the game, as senior point guard Max Cook got his head driven into the floor going after a loose ball, and had his front tooth knocked out and his lip torn open. The Warriors still managed to lead 19-13 after one quarter, as eight different players scored in the first quarter for Wahoo.
Cook returned to the game at the start of the second quarter. The lead was just 26-21 with 3 minutes left in the half, when Wahoo broke the game open. Wahoo increased the lead to 57-32 after three quarters before reserves played most of the fourth quarter.
Cook led Wahoo with 18 points, 6 boards, and 6 steals, despite just playing two quarters and having the injury. Casey Brown, Jon Abbott, and Langemeier each contributed 11 points. Casey Brown had a game-high 8 boards, while Abbott contributed 7 boards.
“I thought our kids did a great job of staying focused and not getting rattled when Max went down. The last three minutes of the second quarter were really big, when we were able to break the game open. I thought Max showed tremendous toughness and courage last night. Not only was he able to keep playing through the pain and discomfort, he played at a very high level. I thought Casey Brown played his best game of the year to this point, and Josh Langemeier played extremely well for us as well. Brook Stuart has just been really solid and steady for us as well. He is such a smart player, and just does not make many mistakes,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Wahoo forced 28 West Point-Beemer turnovers, and had a season high 20 team assists.
Wahoo improves to 5-0, while West Point-Beemer drops to 1-5.

The Wahoo Warriors traveled to David City on Tuesday night and defeated the Scouts 65-43.

The Warriors out-rebounded the Scouts 42-28.
“I thought we played a real nice second half. In the first half, I thought David City played very well, and was the more aggressive team on the floor, but we were able to get that changed around in the second half,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I was pleased to see the rebounding margin. We have struggled rebounding at times early in the season, but were much better at that tonight.”
Wahoo improves to 3-0 and will play host to Logan View on Saturday. David City drops to 0-2.

A Brett Shaw basket made it 47-41 with 55 seconds left, but a Brook Stuart free throw and Cook lay up off of a feed from Brown sealed the win for the Warriors.
“I thought we were pretty solid defensively. We are not shooting the ball yet, but hopefully that will come through better execution and better shot selection. We rebounded the ball better today and again shot free throws very well. We are pleased to be 2-0, but have a lot of areas to work on,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led Wahoo with 16 points, Scheef had 13, and Abbott had 12. Cook, Scheef, and Abbott also each had 8 rebounds.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bennington Badgers 61-55 in the opening game of the season on Friday night.
Bennington opened up a 12-7 lead on the Warriors after a Grant Siekman trey. A Casey Brown trey, a Max Cook bucket and a Mitch Shukis bucket gave the Warriors a 14-12 lead, before Siekman’s third trey of the quarter put Bennington up 15-14 after one.
The Warriors built a 6-point 2nd quarter lead at 28-22 after two Max Cook free throws, and a Jon Abbott bucket towards the end of the half put Wahoo up 30-26 at halftime.
The third quarter stayed tight the whole way, and ended with Wahoo up 43-42 heading into the 4th quarter.
Midway through the 4th quarter, Ben Scheef drove and converted a 3-point play to put Wahoo up 51-46. A Michael Wickham trey cut the lead back to 51-49 with 2:30 to play. Another Scheef basket made it 53-49, and a Max Cook free throw made it 54-49 with 1:19 left.
The Badgers immediately answered as Siekman hit his 7th trey of the night to cut the lead to 54-52. Two Cook free throws pushed the lead to 56-52 with a minute left. The Warriors, though, would make 5 of their final 6 free throws, two coming from Cook, two from Scheef, and one from Brown, to pull out the 61-55 win.
“It was a very hard fought win over a big, physical Bennington team. We got beat pretty soundly on the glass, which is a concern, but made enough plays to pull out the win. Max Cook hit clutch baskets all night long when we needed them. Ben Scheef made some big plays in the 4th quarter for us, and Jon Abbott did a lot of good things tonight. Brook Stuart came off the bench and drew two charging fouls and gave us some great minutes,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors with 27 points, 6 boards and 6 steals. Scheef added 14 points and 6 rebounds. Abbott had 11 points and 6 boards. Brown had a team-high 7 boards.
