2018-2019 Warrior Boys Basketball finished 4th place at State.
The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Ogallala Indians 74-63 in the Consolation game of the Class C-1 State Tournament on Saturday morning at Lincoln Southeast High School.
The game was tied at 19 after one quarter. The Indians were able to break the game open, when they went on a 13-0 run to open the second quarter, to take a 32-19 lead. Ogallala went to the halftime break up 45-32.
The Warriors kept battling to keep the game close. Ogallala still led by 14 after three at 57-43. In the fourth quarter, two baskets a piece from Gerardo Madrid and Trey Scheef cut the lead to five at 57-52, but Wahoo would get no closer, and Ogallala would close out the 74-63 win.
“I was really proud of our kids. Without having Winston and Blake for the game, I felt like our kids really competed hard, and gave it everything they had,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Karson Hesser and Thomas Waido had big games for us. I could not have asked for any more effort and heart from them.”
Hesser led the Warriors with a career-high 18 points and 5 boards. Scheef added 12 points. Madrid scored 11 points, and Thomas Waido had 10 points, 12 boards, and 6 assists.
The Warriors finished their season 24-5, while Ogallala finished 28-1.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Auburn Bulldogs in the State Semifinals on Friday morning at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, 59-46.
The Warriors got off to a great start, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Two baskets from Karson Hesser, four points from Trey Scheef, and a Winston Cook bucket got the Warriors out to the early lead. Auburn cut into the lead the rest of the quarter, and the score was 12-11 after one.
After the Bulldogs tied the score at 13, Scheef and Cook hit back-to-back treys to make it 19-13. The Bulldogs cut the lead back to 21-20. A third Scheef trey gave the Warriors a 24-20 lead at the break.
Auburn scored the first five points of the second half, to take a 25-24 lead. After a Cook bucket gave the Warriors a 26-25 lead, Auburn started to take control. A 15-7 run by Auburn put the Bulldogs up 40-33 after three.
After a Cook bucket cut the lead to 40-35, Auburn scored the next four points to go up 44-35. The Bulldogs then took the air out of the ball, and continued to stretch the lead the rest of the way for a 59-46 win.
“I am very proud of our kids’ heart, and the way they battled,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We left a lot of points on the floor in the third quarter with missed free throws. Auburn made the plays and the shots that they needed to, to advance. I would have loved to have had Blake Lacey and a healthy Winston Cook for this game, but that is the way athletics goes sometimes.”
Cook led Wahoo with 17 points. Scheef added 14. Thomas Waido added 6 points and 5 steals.
The Warriors were outrebounded 31-27. Wahoo drops to 24-4, and will face 27-1 Ogallala in the third place game tomorrow morning at Lincoln Southeast. Auburn will face North Bend Central in the C-1 State Championship tomorrow morning at Pinnacle.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Boys Town Cowboys 64-50 in the first round of the Class C-1 State Tournament held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, on a snowy Thursday morning.
Wahoo led 9-5 after two Winston Cook baskets. Boys Town scored the next 11 points, to take a 16-9 lead. A Karson Hesser three-point play, followed by a Blake Lacey trey, cut the lead to 16-15. Following a Boys Town basket, Lacey hit another trey to tie the game at 18. A Trey Scheef trey gave Wahoo a 21-18 lead. Back-to-back treys from Cook to end the half gave Wahoo a 27-22 halftime lead. Lacey hurt his leg with three minutes left in the half, and was done for the day and season.
A Hesser bucket extended Wahoo’s lead to 31-24. A Thomas Waido bucket, followed by a Scheef three-point play, pushed Wahoo’s lead to 36-26. A Waido bucket made it 40-28. A Cook bucket to end the quarter put Wahoo up 44-30 after three.
Two Scheef free throws gave Wahoo its largest lead at 46-30 to start the fourth. A Cook bucket made it 48-34. Boys Town would then cut into the lead. The Cowboys scored to cut the lead to four at 54-50, with 2:15 left. Cook then had a huge bucket on a reverse spin to the basket to stop the run and push the lead to six at 56-50. Three Hesser free throws extended the lead to 59-50, and the Warriors were able to hang on to the 64-50 win.
“I am incredibly proud of our kids. We had so many kids step up for us. Winston came up huge, and Karson Hesser and Trey Scheef had terrific games for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “For us to get this done without our floor general Blake Lacey was huge. Blake broke a bone in his leg, and will have surgery tomorrow. My heart breaks for him to have his high school career end this way.”
Cook led the Warriors with 23 points and 10 boards. Scheef added 13 point and 6 assists. Hesser had 12 points and 8 boards. Waido had 6 assists and 5 boards.
Wahoo improved to 24-3 and will face Auburn in the Semifinals tomorrow at Pinnacle Bank. Boys Town ended its season at 19-8.

State-bound! Congratulations Warrior Boys Basketball on winning the C1-2 District Final over Wayne, and qualifying for the 2019 State Tournament!
The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Wayne Blue Devils 66-47 on Monday night in West Point, to earn a trip to the 2019 State Tournament.
The Warriors led 16-10 after one quarter, behind 9 Winston Cook points, and 7 from Blake Lacey.
The game stayed close throughout the second quarter. A Lacey trey at the buzzer pushed the lead to 8 at 34-26 at the break.
Wayne scored the first 5 points of the third quarter to cut the lead to three at 34-31. That is when Wahoo broke things open by going on a 14-0 run. A Lacey bucket was followed by a free throw and bucket from Cook. Two Karson Hesser free throws pushed the lead to 10 at 41-31. A Lacey trey, followed by a steal and lay up from Trey Scheef, made it 46-31, and a Cook bucket capped the 14-0 run at 48-31, to put the Warriors in control. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 50-32.
In the fourth quarter, the Warriors were able to keep the Blue Devils from cutting the lead under 15, to win the District crown.
“Very proud of our kids,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “They battled, and finally were able to make the run in the third quarter to take control. Winston and Blake were very good tonight, as was Thomas Waido. We are very excited that we get to return to Lincoln for the State Tournament.”
Lacey led the Warriors with 26 points on 4-8 from three-point range, and 5 assists. Cook added 20 points on 8-11 from two-point range, and 8 rebounds. Waido added 10 point on 4-5 shooting from the field. Hesser added 6 points and 8 boards.
Wahoo forced 23 Blue Devil turnovers, while just turning it over 10 times themselves.
Wahoo improved to 23-3 and will begin State Tournament play a week from Thursday. Wayne ended its season at 12-13.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the David City Aquinas Monarchs 70-62 in the Subdistrict Finals at Schuyler on Thursday night.
The Warriors opened up a 23-15 lead after one quarter, behind 11 first quarter points from Blake Lacey.
Two free throws from Trey Scheef gave Wahoo a 10-point lead at 25-15. Following a Lacey trey, Wahoo still led 30-20. The Monarchs would then start chipping away at the lead. Wahoo led 39-33 after a Lacey basket, but the Monarchs hit back-to-back treys to close the half, and go to the break with the game tied at 39.
A Lacey trey, a Scheef free throw, and another Lacey bucket gave the Warriors the first six points of the second half, and made it 45-39. Following a three and a bucket from Winston Cook, the Warriors had a 12-point lead at the end of three at 59-47.
A Lacey trey gave Wahoo its biggest lead of the game at 64-50. The Monarchs scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 64-57. A Karson Hesser bucket made it 66-57, and a Thomas Waido lay up made it 68-57 with 1:45 left. Aquinas would cut it to 68-62 late. They misfired on a three that would have cut it to three with 40 seconds left. Two Lacey free throws provided the final margin at 70-62.
“Aquinas shot the heck out of it, as they hit 15 treys,” stated Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Part of that is, we need to defend better. We were not real sharp mentally tonight. We need to be better. We are glad to get the win and move on to the District Final. Blake Lacey had a huge night offensively for us.”
Lacey led Wahoo with a career-high 35 points on 13-17 shooting from the field, including 7-10 from behind the arc. Cook had 15 points on 6-8 from the field. Hesser added 10 points on 5-5 shooting from the floor. Scheef added 7 boards.
The Warriors were 10-17 (58.8%) from behind the arc, while Aquinas was 15-33 (45.5.%) from the three-point line.
Wahoo improved to 22-3, and will face Wayne in a District Final on Monday night. Aquinas ends its season at 10-13.

The Warriors jumped out to a 22-9 lead after one quarter, and extended the lead to 40-17 at halftime. The lead grew to 67-27 after three quarters.
“We came out and did what we needed to do,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Thomas Waido was really good on the defensive end, and it was good to see Trey Scheef shoot the ball well from the perimeter.”
Scheef led Wahoo with 17 points on 4-5 shooting from three. Winston Cook had 16 points and 7 assists. Waido had a game-high 9 steals, 9 boards, and 14 points. Blake Lacey had 11 points. Karson Hesser had 6 points, and 6 boards.
Wahoo forced 23 David City turnovers, while committing just 4. Wahoo outrebounded the Scouts 34-24.
Wahoo improved to 21-3, while David City ends their season at 12-11. The Warriors will face David City Aquinas on Thursday night at Schuyler, after the Monarchs upset Bishop Neumann.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Elmwood-Murdock Knights 63-56 on Saturday afternoon in Murdock.
The Warriors scored the first 13 points of the game, and after a Blake Lacey trey, they led 22-4. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 22-6.
Wahoo continued to increase the lead, and after a Trey Scheef trey, they led 32-8. Lacey hit a trey with 5 seconds left in the half to put Wahoo up 40-15. Elmwood-Murdock countered with a half-court shot at the buzzer to cut the lead to 40-18 at the half.
The Knights cut the lead to 42-27 early in the third. Baskets from Scheef, and a three from Winston Cook, pushed the lead back to 20, at 47-27. The Knights then went on a 14-2 run, and ended the quarter with another half-court shot at the buzzer to cut the Warrior lead to 49-41 after three.
The Knights scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to make it 49-43. Cook answered with a big trey and a lay up to push the lead back to 54-43. A Karson Hesser bucket made it 56-43. The Knights cut the lead back to 56-48. Two Lacey free throws made it 58-48. The Knights would get as close as 61-56 in the final 10 seconds. Two more Lacey free throws made the final margin 63-56.
“We played a nice first half. Their half-court shot at the buzzer seemed to energize them in the second half. We had some bad third quarter possessions that allowed them to get back in the game, but give them credit for playing really hard and getting back in the game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led the Warriors with 21 points on 9-15 shooting from the field, and 9 boards. Lacey had 16 points, including 5-6 from the free throw line. Scheef had 12 points and 7 boards. Thomas Waido had a game-high 7 steals.
Wahoo improved to 20-3, while Elmwood-Murdock dropped to 14-7. The Warriors open subdistrict action on Tuesday night in Schuyler against David City.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays 81-40 in Capitol Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo.
The game was tied at 6 early in the first quarter. A Winston Cook bucket, followed by a Blake Lacey trey and a Gerardo Madrid trey, put Wahoo up 14-6. A second Madrid trey extended the Wahoo lead to 19-8, and a Trey Scheef bucket made it 21-10 after one quarter.
A Cook bucket put Wahoo up 23-10. The Bluejays then hit three consecutive treys to cut the lead to 23-19. Wahoo would then go on their own run. A Karson Hesser bucket, followed by seven consecutive Lacey points, built the lead back to 32-19. Another Lacey bucket to end the half sent Wahoo to the locker room with a 37-28 lead.
After an Ashland-Greenwood trey cut the lead to 37-31 to open the third, the Warriors got back-to-back treys from Hesser and Lacey to push the lead to 43-31. Following a Bluejay trey that cut the lead to 43-34, Cook hit a trey to make it 46-34. Lacey and Cook added back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 16 at 50-34. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 54-36.
Back-to-back treys from Lacey to open the fourth quarter gave the Warriors a 60-36 lead, and they were not threatened the rest of the way.
“I was really proud of our kids tonight. They played with a lot of heart,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “The seniors were determined not to let their last game at home slip away. Blake Lacey had a huge night for us, and Karson Hesser was really good tonight. Gerardo Madrid gave us an early spark with two big treys off the bench.”
Lacey led the Warriors with 26 points on 6-12 shooting from behind the arc to go with 6 boards. Cook added 11 points. Hesser had 9 points, 9 boards, and 7 assists. Scheef added 8 points and 7 boards.
The Warriors outrebounded the Bluejays 32-15, and forced 20 turnovers. Wahoo was 13-28 (46.4%) from behind the arc.
Five seniors, including Cook, Lacey, Greenfield, Oden, and Hesser, played their final home game.
Wahoo improved to 19-3 and will play their regular season finale at Elmwood-Murdock on Saturday. Ashland-Greenwood dropped to 14-6.

“Other than a couple of defensive lapses, we played a pretty complete game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Blake Lacey did a great job of knocking down threes and distributing the ball. Thomas Waido continues to do a great job defensively out front on our 1-3-1.”
Lacey led Wahoo with 27 points on 6-14 from behind the arc, to go with 7 assists and 5 steals. Waido had 16 points on 7-9 shooting, to go with 7 boards, 7 steals, and 4 assists. Winston Cook had 14 points and 8 boards, and Trey Scheef added 11 points and 4 steals.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 58-57 in a thriller on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo.
The Crusaders led 15-12 after one quarter of play. GICC extended the lead to 18-12 early in the second quarter. The Warriors then went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. Thomas Waido had 5 of the 10 points in the run, Winston Cook had 3, and Karson Hesser added two free throws to put the Warriors up by 4. A GICC trey at the buzzer tied the game up at 26 heading to the halftime break.
GICC jumped out to leads of 34-29, and 37-32 midway through the third quarter. Two free throws and a short jumper from Trey Scheef, followed by a Waido free throw, tied the score at 37. A Blake Lacey drive and bucket to close the third quarter put the Warriors up 43-40 after three.
A Cook bucket put Wahoo up 45-40 to start the fourth. The Crusaders then scored the next 5 points to tie the game at 45. Cook then took over, scoring on the next three possessions, capped by a trey to put Wahoo up 52-45.
A Scheef lay up made it 54-45, giving the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 9. Following a GICC basket, Lacey added two free throws to keep the lead at 9, at 56-47, with 3:30 left. From there, GICC came charging back. A trey and a driving bucket cut the lead to 56-52. A Lacey free throw made the lead 5 at 57-52. A Crusader trey cut the lead to 57-55. A Waido free throw put Wahoo up 58-55, and another Crusader bucket made it 58-57.
The Warriors turned it over with 30 seconds left, giving GICC a chance for the win. The Crusaders got up two three-point shots in the last seven seconds, that would have won the game, but both shots were off the mark, giving the Warriors the exciting win.
“We did a lot of good things,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I thought we competed hard. We knew it would be a grind-it-out sort of game. We put ourselves in great position with four minutes to play, and a 9-point lead, but we had some defensive breakdowns, and some bad turnovers, that allowed GICC a chance to win the game at the end. We have been on the short end of a couple of those this year, so we will take the win.”
Cook had a monster night, finishing with 30 points on just 14 shots from the field. Cook was 11-14 from the field, and 6-10 from the line, to go with 12 boards. Lacey and Waido each added 9 points. Hesser led Wahoo with 6 boards, while Waido added 5.
Wahoo out-rebounded GICC 29-23.
Wahoo improved to 17-3, and will travel to Columbus Scotus on Tuesday night. GICC dropped to 12-7.

The game was close early. Wahoo led just 22-19 after one quarter. They extended the lead late in the second quarter, and following a Trey Scheef tip in at the buzzer, led 41-31 at halftime.
The Warriors opened it up in the third quarter. A Thomas Waido three-point play was followed by a Scheef three. Back-to-back baskets from Waido, followed by a Blake Lacey bucket, ended a 14-2 run to start the third and put Wahoo up 55-33. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 68-42.
“Arlington played really hard and really well early. It took awhile for us to take control and break the game open, but we were able to do that with a real nice third quarter,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Winston Cook led four Warriors in double figures with 18 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. Waido had 17 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor, to go with 5 boards, and 4 steals. Lacey added 13 points, and Scheef contributed 12.
The Warriors forced 20 turnovers while committing just 4.
Wahoo improved to 16-3 and will host Grand Island Central Catholic on Saturday afternoon. Arlington dropped to 2-15.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays 57-44 in the Capitol Conference Tournament Finals on Saturday night in Wahoo.
Wahoo jumped out an 18-8 lead after one quarter, behind eight first quarter points a piece from Winston Cook and Thomas Waido.
The Warriors had a big second quarter, outscoring the Bluejays 21-9, to extend the lead to 39-17 at halftime. The Warriors were up 22-12, when back-to-back treys from Blake Lacey and a Cook bucket pushed the lead to 30-12.
The Warriors still led 46-26 late in the third, when the Bluejays scored the last six points of the quarter to cut the lead to 46-32 after three quarters.
Wahoo was never able to fully put Ashland away in the fourth quarter, but the Bluejays did not get closer than 13 points down the stretch.
“We had a really nice first half. We were moving the ball really well, and were really active on the defensive end,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I would have liked to played a better second half, but give Ashland credit for playing really hard and chipping away at our lead.”
Cook led Wahoo with 21 points and 12 boards. Lacey added 14 points. Waido contributed 12 points, 6 boards, and 4 steals. Karson Hesser added 8 boards, and 4 assists.
Wahoo improved to 15-3, and captured their eighth Conference Tournament title, in the last nine years. Ashland-Greenwood dropped to 12-4. Wahoo will host Arlington and Grand Island Central Catholic next Friday and Saturday.

Wahoo led 26-24 midway through the second quarter, when a Cook bucket and three-point play from Karson Hesser put the Warriors up 31-24 at the halftime break.
A Blake Lacey trey to start the third period, and a Cook bucket, put Wahoo up 36-24. Another Cook basket at the end of the quarter put Wahoo up 48-34.
Wahoo took its biggest lead at 58-41 with three minutes left before ending with the 62-50 win.
“We were not terribly sharp tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We had some really poor passes, and some bad decisions on the offensive end. We did not rebound the ball the way we needed to either. We need to be better on Saturday.”
Cook led the Warriors with 26 points on 12-18 shooting from the field to go with 7 boards, and 3 blocks. Thomas Waido added a career-high 18 points on 8-10 shooting from the field, to go with 4 boards and 4 steals. Blake Lacey added 8 points. Trey Scheef had 6 boards and 6 steals. The game was close early. Wahoo led 15-13 late in the first quarter. Wahoo would score the last 8 points of the quarter, and would outscore Norfolk Catholic 35-3 over the last 10 minutes of the half, to take a 50-16 lead at halftime. The lead was 70-29 after three quarters.
“We played well,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef, “Once we started forcing some turnovers, we were able to get some run outs and easy buckets, and we got on a roll. It was a good game for us heading into the Conference Tournament on Monday.”

“We were a little loose with the ball, especially in the first half, but overall, it was a pretty solid game for us. Winston Cook played awfully well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led Wahoo with 28 points on 10-16 shooting from the field, and 5-6 at the line, to go with 12 boards and 5 assists. Lacey had 14 points and 4 assists. Scheef added 12 points. Karson Hesser had 9 boards and 6 points. Nick Oden added 7 points off the bench.

The first half was close throughout. Platteview led 18-16 after one quarter behind five made buckets from behind the arc. The teams went to the halftime break tied at 30. Winston Cook had 13 first half points for the Warriors.
After a Platteview bucket cut the Warrior lead to 44-43 midway through the third quarter, the Warriors went on a run that put the game away. A Blake Lacey runner, a Cook basket, and back-to-back lay ups from Trey Scheef were followed by a Thomas Waido bucket to end the quarter with Wahoo up, 54-43.
The Warrior run continued in the fourth quarter. Baskets from Waido, Karson Hesser, two lay ups from Trevin Luben, and another Scheef lay up capped a 19-0 run to put Wahoo up 63-43. The Warriors closed out the game with a 68-49 victory.
“Platteview really shot it well early,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We were having trouble slowing them down and we were not real sharp. We had a nice run to break the game open midway through the third quarter. Trevin Luben came in off the bench and really gave us a spark with his energy and athleticism.”
Cook led Wahoo with 19 points, 6 boards, and 4 steals. Lacey added 17 points on 4-5 shooting from behind the arc. Waido had 9 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds. Scheef had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Hesser had 6 points, and Luben added 5 points, 4 boards, and 4 steals.
The Warriors were 6-11 from behind the arc, and out-rebounded the Trojans 31-20.

“I didn’t think we were quite as sharp as Friday night, but it was still another good win. Blake Lacey was under the weather all weekend, but really shot the ball well. Blake was 6-9 from behind the arc on Friday, and 7-13 on Saturday. We did a better job on the glass today, but we still have steps to take defensively!” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Lacey led Wahoo with 21 points. Cook had 13 boards, and 11 rebounds. Waido added 12 points and 5 boards. Scheef had 8 points and 6 assists.

Wahoo led 33-28 late in the second quarter after a Lacey trey, but Seward scored the last 5 points of the quarter to tie the game up at 33 heading into halftime.
A Trey Scheef lay up and Cook bucket put Wahoo up 37-33 early in the third period, but Seward would then go on a 12-0 run to go up 45-37. A Thomas Waido bucket to end the quarter cut the Seward lead to 47-42 after three.
A Karson Hesser bucket and two Scheef free throws cut the Seward lead to 47-46 early in the fourth. After a Seward basket, a Cook trey tied the score at 49. Seward took a 55-51 lead with under two minutes to play. A Cook free throw, followed by another Cook basket, cut the lead to 55-54 with 30 seconds left. Seward hit one of two free throws with six seconds left to make it 56-54. The Warriors had one last chance, but the ball was knocked away on a drive to the lane as time expired, to give Seward the win.
“It was a tough one to lose,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It felt a lot like the Aurora game. Seward is an excellent team. We are two possessions away from being 8-1, but instead we are 6-3. I am proud of the way the kids battled, but we need to learn from this loss. There are a lot of things we can do better, and need to do better, to get to where we want to go this year.”

The Warriors got off to a great start by scoring the first 6 points of the game, and increased the lead to 26-10 after one quarter, behind 9 first quarter points from Trey Scheef, 7 from Blake Lacey, and 6 from Winston Cook.
Wahoo scored the first 8 points of the second quarter on 4 points from Cook, 2 from Lacey, and 2 from Thomas Waido to take a 34-10 lead. Lexington would cut into the lead the rest of the quarter to make it 41-24 at halftime.

The lead was six at 63-57 midway early in the fourth. Baskets from Cook and Karson Hesser pushed the lead back to 10 at 67-57. Wahoo led 71-66 with two minutes left. A Waido bucket and three-point play from Lacey made it 76-66, and the Warriors held on for the 80-72 win.
“It was a good win over an athletic Lexington team. We played very well early to build the big lead. We would have liked to defend better in the second half and rebound better, but it was still a good win,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cook led Wahoo with 26 points, 7 boards, and 4 assists. Lacey had 18 points, 4 steals, and 4 assists. Scheef added 14 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 7 assists. Hesser added 12 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor, 5 boards, and 5 assists. Waido had 7 points and 5 steals.
Wahoo forced 23 Lexington turnovers, while committing just 11. Lexington owned a 32-23 lead on the glass, though.
Wahoo improves to 6-2 and will face Seward tomorrow in the Holiday Tournament Finals. Lexington drops to 4-4.

Big third quarter lets Wahoo boys run away from Lincoln Lutheran

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors 67-45 on Tuesday night in Wahoo.
Wahoo jumped out to a 6-0 lead on back-to-back treys from Winston Cook and Blake Lacey. After a Gerardo Madrid trey and basket from Lacey, Wahoo led 16-6. Lincoln Lutheran would score the last eight points of the quarter to make the score 16-14 after one.
The game was close throughout the second quarter, and Wahoo led at the break 26-25.
Wahoo opened the game up in the third quarter. A Thomas Waido basket, followed by a Karson Hesser bucket, and a Trey Scheef three-point play, pushed the lead to 33-25. Following a Lincoln Lutheran free throw, Scheef scored, followed by two more Waido buckets, a Lacey lay up and a Lacey trey to make it 46-28. That capped a 20-3 run to start the second half. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 51-32, and in control of the game.
“I was really pleased with the third quarter. We started being more aggressive against their 1-3-1 defense, and we were able to get our hands on a lot of passes and get our offense started in transition,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Thomas Waido had a huge game for us. This was a good win against a good team.”
Waido led Wahoo with 20 points on 9-11 shooting from the field, to go with 8 boards, 8 steals, 5 assists, and zero turnovers. Lacey added 18 points, 5 steals, and 6 assists. Cook had 15 points and 8 boards.
Wahoo forced 21 Lincoln Lutheran turnovers, while committing just 11.
Wahoo enters the holiday break with a 5-2 record and will next face Lexington in the first round of the Holiday Tournament at Wahoo on December 28. Lincoln Lutheran falls to 5-2.

Yutan doesn't make it easy for defending Class C-1 champ Wahoo as old rivalry resumes

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Yutan Chieftains 71-64 on Monday night in Yutan.
The game was tied early at 10-10. Baskets from Blake Lacey, Thomas Waido, and six points from Winston Cook helped Wahoo take a 21-13 lead after one quarter.
A put-back at the end of the second quarter from Gerardo Madrid sent Wahoo to the locker room with a 39-28 lead.
Midway through the third quarter, a Cook basket gave Wahoo their largest lead of the game at 54-34. The Chieftains scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 54-41. A Cook trey pushed the lead back to 16 at 57-41, and the quarter ended with Wahoo up 57-44.
Yutan continued to chip away and cut the lead to six, at 59-53 with six minutes to play. A Lacey layup, a Cook basket, and a lay up from Karson Hesser extended the lead to 12 at 65-53, and the Warriors held on for the 71-64 win.
“We played well at times,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We did a nice job of building the lead to 20, and then we did not finish like we need to. Yutan has a really nice team and hit some deep shots to help them climb back into the game. Winston had a big game offensively again for us. Thomas Waido and Karson Hesser both played well for us also.”
Cook led Wahoo with 30 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the arc, and 8-8 from the line to go with 7 boards. Hesser added 12 points on 6-7 shooting from the field to go with 8 boards. Lacey had 11 points and 4 assists. Waido added 10 points and 4 steals.
Wahoo forced 16 Yutan turnovers while committing just 8.
Wahoo improves to 4-2, while Yutan drops to 5-2.
Wahoo hosts Lincoln Lutheran on Tuesday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 87-40 Friday night in Capitol Conference action in Wahoo.
The Warriors led 27-14 after one quarter, and extended the lead to 52-24 by halftime.
Wahoo had five guys in double figures, led by Blake Lacey with 16 points on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc, to go with 4 steals. Gerardo Madrid had a career-high 13 points and 4 assists. Winston Cook added 12 points and 4 assists. Karson Hesser had 12 points, and Trey Scheef added 10 points on 4-5 shooting from the field to go with 6 assists.
The Warriors were 11-18 from behind the arc, and 14-17 from the line. Wahoo forced 23 Pioneer turnovers, while committing just 9.
“I thought everyone played well tonight. We were able to get a lot of guys significant minutes, and we got a lot of positive contributions. I thought we played hard and moved the ball pretty well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Wahoo improves to 3-2, and will travel to Yutan on Monday night. Fort Calhoun drops to 2-4.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Raiders 70-32 on Saturday afternoon in Logan View.
The Warriors led 11-3 after one quarter, and increased the lead to 33-7 at halftime. The lead was 53-22 after three quarters, and reserves played most of the fourth quarter to take home the 70-32 victory.
Winston Cook led the Warriors with 21 points on 10-14 shooting from the field, to go with 7 boards. Blake Lacey had 13 points, 5 boards, 5 steals, and 5 assists. Karson Hesser added 10 points. Trevor Kasischke added 9 points.
Wahoo out rebounded Logan View 31-17, and forced 20 Raider turnovers.
“I feel really good about how we played today. We were active on the defensive end and really unselfish with the ball. We got really good ball movement today. It was important to get off to a good start today, with the pace that Logan View likes to play at, and we were able to do that,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Wahoo evened its record at 2-2 and will host Fort Calhoun on Friday night. Logan View/S-S falls to 2-2.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Wayne Blue Devils 72-64 on Friday night in Wayne.
Wayne jumped on the Warriors early, getting out to a 13-2 lead. Wayne led after one quarter 21-14. The Blue Devils maintained their lead throughout the second quarter, behind eight treys, and led 39-33 at halftime.
Baskets by Karson Hesser and Winston Cook to open the third quarter cut the lead to 39-37. A Cook trey cut the Wayne lead to 46-43, and moments later another Cook trey tied the game at 50. The Warriors would score the next 8 points to take a 58-50 lead behind baskets from Hesser, Blake Lacey, and two buckets from Cook.
Wahoo led 67-58 after a Trey Scheef lay up. The Blue Devils scored the next six points to cut the lead to 67-64 in the final 40 seconds. A free throw from Gerardo Madrid pushed the lead back to four at 68-64. Two Lacey free throws and a Cook bucket made the final 72-64.
“We will certainly take the win after starting out 0-2 last weekend, but we did not play at a very high level tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Our defense was not very good, we are very impatient on offense, and we are a bad free throw shooting team right now. Winston Cook had a huge night for us with 39 points and 13 rebounds.”
Cook scored the first 19 points of the game for Wahoo, and finished with 39 points on 17-23 shooting from the field to go with 13 rebounds and 4 steals. Hesser also had a double-double with 10 points, 10 boards, and 6 assists. Lacey added 10 points and 4 assists.
Wayne was 8-15 from behind the arc in the first half. Wahoo outrebounded Wayne 36-20.
Wahoo improved to 1-2, and will travel to Logan View this afternoon, to take on the Raiders. Wayne dropped to 1-2.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Aurora Huskies in overtime 76-74 in the home opener on Saturday night in Wahoo.
Aurora jumped out to a 15-8 lead after one quarter. The lead grew to 37-22 late in the second quarter. Wahoo was able to close out the second quarter on an 8-0 run, with 6 straight points from Blake Lacey and a bucket from Trey Scheef, to cut the halftime lead to 37-30.
The lead was still at five late in the third quarter at 49-44, when Lacey hit a trey to cut the lead to 49-47 after three quarters.
Winston Cook scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter to put Wahoo up 52-49. After Aurora scored the next 4 points, Thomas Waido scored to put Wahoo back up 54-53. Aurora went back up 59-56. Two Scheef free throws, and two Lacey buckets put Wahoo up 62-59. Another Lacey bucket and a Cook basket put Wahoo up 66-61 with 2:30 left in the game.
Aurora would score the next five points to tie it up at 66. A Karson Hesser basket put Wahoo up 68-66. An Aurora trey put Aurora up 69-68. A Cook basket with 20 seconds left put Wahoo up 70-69. Aurora made one of two free throws with six seconds left to tie the game at 70. Wahoo’s shot at the buzzer was off the mark and the game went to overtime.
Aurora scored the first five points of overtime to go up 75-70. A Cook basket made it 75-72. After an Aurora free throw made it 76-72, another Cook basket made it 76-74. The Warriors got the ball back and had a chance to win it. A three-point attempt was off the mark and the tip in at the buzzer did not go in, and Aurora escaped with the overtime win.
“It was a very exciting high school basketball game,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Even though it did not go our way, it was fun to be a part of a great game like that. I was really proud of how our kids battled back in the second quarter and how they competed throughout the game. We had some inexperienced kids out on the floor, and I think they really grew up tonight. Baylor Schierman is a terrific basketball player, just as he was on the football field. Our inability to keep them off the glass to prevent second chance points, and our shot selection are things we have to get better at.”
Lacey led the Warriors with 30 points on 6-12 shooting from behind the arc. Cook added 21 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists. Hesser added 10 points and 5 boards. Scheef contributed 9 points. Waido added 6 boards.
The Warriors were outrebounded by the Huskies 36-26, and Aurora attempted 15 more free throws than Wahoo did.
Wahoo drops to 0-2 and will travel to Wayne on Friday night. Class B #5 Aurora improved to 2-0.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bennington Badgers 69-54 in the season opener on Thursday night in Bennington.
Bennington led 16-13 after one quarter, and extended the lead to 32-24 at halftime. The Warriors were down 37-32 midway through the third quarter, when the Badgers went on a 12-1 run to break the game open at 49-33. Wahoo was able to get no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
Bennington outrebounded the Warriors 34-24, and shot 27 free throws to 4 for Wahoo.
Winston Cook led the Warriors with 19 points and 11 boards. Blake Lacey added 17 points on 5-7 shooting from three-point range, and 5 assists.
“Bennington is an excellent team, and we were going to have to play really well to have a chance at them, and that did not happen,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We got outrebounded badly, and our ability to attack them and get to the line did not happen. This was a good game for us to play, to show us what we need to do to get better.”
Wahoo drops to 0-1 and will host a very talented Aurora team on Friday night.
