STATE TOURNAMENT
The 2018 NSAA Boys Basketball State Championships were played Thursday-Saturday, March 8-10, in Lincoln. In Class C-1, Wahoo earned the #1 seed, and dominated the #8-seeded Ogallala Indians in Game 2 on Thursday with an 87-44 victory! On Friday, Wahoo overcame early foul trouble (4 players with 3 fouls at halftime) and defeated the #5 seed Lincoln Christian in the C-1 semifinal (60-48 final). Wahoo headed to the C-1 State Championship game on Saturday, where they fought an intense battle with the #2-seeded Winnebago Indians. The game went into overtime, and the Warriors escaped with the 70-66 win, capturing Wahoo High School's 11th State Championship! Congratulations Warriors on an incredible season! Warriors stand atop Class C-1 once again

Championship number 11 was a dogfight.
The Wahoo Warriors needed overtime to beat the Winnebago Indians 70-66 in the Class C-1 State Championship game at Pinnacle Bank Arena early Saturday morning.
The Warriors finished the season with a record of 27-2, while the Indians saw their season come to an end with a record of 22-7.
Wahoo got 19 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench from junior Winston Cook and 12 points (all in the second half and overtime) off the bench from junior Blake Lacey.
Seniors Cameron Quick and Will Shanahan combined for 24 points and 19 rebounds against the Indians.
Wahoo shot just 42 percent from the field and made just 4-of-18 from behind the 3-point line.
Maurice Scott led Winnebago with 18 while senior point guard D'Von Lapointe added 13 points and a new state tournament record 14 assists.
Wahoo outlasts Bago 70-66 in overtime

The top-ranked Wahoo boys basketball team won the school’s 11th state championship early Saturday morning when they were able to hang on for a 70-66 overtime win over the Winnebago Indians.
On a day filled with subpar championship games, the Warriors and Indians put on a show for the thousands in attendance and those who were at home watching on television.
“I don’t think you can ask anything more out of the state final than that. Unbelievable game,” said Wahoo Coach Kevin Scheef. “I’m incredibly proud of my kids for persevering. It wasn’t looking too good for a while. They had us on the ropes.”
Winnebago led 15-14 after an entertaining first quarter of action as both teams tried to push the tempo offensively.
A jumper by Winnebago senior MaNaPe Cleveland allowed the Indians to take a 15-14 lead into the second stanza.
The game remained tight throughout a second quarter.
Wahoo led 21-15 with 5:40 in the second quarter before the Indians were able to forge ahead by halftime.
A layup by senior D’Von LaPointe capped a 13-4 run to end the half and Bago took a 28-25 lead into the locker room.
A basket by senior Will Shanahan got the Warriors to within 28-27 with 7:03 left in the third quarter.
A trio of 3-pointers pushed the Bago lead to 37-27 a minute and a half later.
A free throw from junior Winston Cook stemmed the tide before another basket allowed the Indians to take their biggest lead of the game at 39-28 with 4:41.
The Warriors switched to man-to-man midway through the fourth quarter and it sparked a rally which got them back into the game.
“We had to try something different. The game was getting away from us in the third quarter and we felt we needed to switch things up. It wasn’t perfect, but I think it rallied us a little bit,” said Scheef.
Wahoo created three turnovers and after a transition basket by senior Cameron Quick, the Warriors trailed 41-38 with 1:18 left in the third quarter.
The Warriors trailed 45-39 as time was running down in the third when senior Dylan Egr sank a big 3-pointer with three seconds remaining.
It was the switch to man-to-man on the defensive end, combined with the aggressive offensive mindset of Cook and junior Blake Lacey, which ultimately allowed the Warriors to regain the lead in the second half and eventually win in overtime.
“Those two guys were really good today. They have been all year. They could be starters, but have come off the bench all season to really provide us a spark,” Scheef added.
Cook scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the third and fourth quarters.
Blake Lacey scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Including two clutch 3-pointers (one in fourth quarter and one in overtime) and it was his two free throws with 15 seconds left in overtime which ultimately sealed the Indians fate.
It almost wasn’t enough.
The Indians had the ball with the game tied at 59 with 5.9 seconds remaining and the length of the floor to navigate.
LaPointe went 94 feet, however, his 10-footer in the lane bounced off the back of the rim.
“Gosh, what a great player. When I saw it leave his hands, I thought we were in trouble,” Scheef said. “Lucky for us, it was our day and it didn’t go in.”
There were four lead changes early in overtime — the game featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties, before Billy Hancock hit four free throws to give Wahoo a 66-63 lead with 1:24 left. Hancock calmly knocked down all six of his free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Wahoo made all six of their free throws in overtime and made 12-of-14 from the line in the fourth quarter and OT.
Quick played well and finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
Shanahan added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Leading scorer, senior Brendan Lacey finished with just six points and five rebounds before fouling out with more than four minutes remaining in regulation.
The win improved the Warriors’ record to 27-2 on the year and gave them their 11th state title.
It is the second state title for Scheef who also led Wahoo to a title and an undefeated season in 2012-2013.
It is the Indians first runner-up finish to go along with a state championship and two third-place finishes since 2014.

Warriors advance to Class C-1 championship game

The Wahoo Warrior boys basketball team advanced to the Class C-1 state championship game for a second straight season with a 60-48 win over Lincoln Christian on Friday morning in Lincoln.
The Warriors led by just one point at the half, but steadily pulled away in the third and fourth quarters.
Wahoo led 19-10 after one quarter, but Christian closed the gap to 27-26 at halftime.
The Warriors outscored Christian 33-22 in the second half while limiting the Crusaders to just 24 percent shooting and forcing ten turnovers.
Senior Brendan Lacey led all scorers with 22 points. He finished 9-10 from the free throw line.
Seniors Cameron Quick and Billy Hancock added 10 points a piece.
Wahoo shot 21-of-36 from the foul line.
The Warriors will play the winner of the semifinal between Broken Bow/Winnebago on Saturday morning at 9 a.m in the Class C-1 state championship game.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Raiders 49-36 on Monday night at Fremont High in the District Finals to qualify for the 2018 State Tournament.
Logan View S.S. jumped out to a 7-2 lead early. Wahoo then went on a 10-2 run to end the quarter to go up 12-9. Brendan Lacey had 10 of the 12 Wahoo points.
Wahoo increased the lead to 19-11 midway through the second quarter after two Will Shanahan free throws. A Cameron Quick bucket ended the first half with Wahoo up 21-15.
A Billy Hancock trey to open the third quarter put Wahoo up 24-15. Logan View then hit back-to-back treys to close the score to 24-21. The score was 27-23, when the Warriors went on a 10-0 run, to take their biggest lead of the game at 37-23. A Logan View trey to close the third quarter made it 37-26 after three.
Wahoo led 40-29 early in the fourth after a Brendan Lacey trey. The Raiders would go on a 7-0 run to make it 40-36 with 2:30 left. A Brendan Lacey assist to Winston Cook, followed by a Hancock assist to Cook for a three-point play, made it 45-36. A Brendan Lacey lay up and a Quick lay up closed out the scoring and gave the Warriors the 49-36 win.
“It was not the most well-played game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Give Logan View credit for a lot of that though. They play really good defense, and their length gave us some trouble. When Logan View cut it to four late, our kids did a great job of not panicking and making the plays we needed down the stretch to get the win. Brendan Lacey hit some big shots for us tonight.”
Brendan Lacey led the Warriors with 18 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the arc. Quick added 13 points on 6-9 shooting to go with 6 boards and 5 steals. Shanahan added 5 boards, and Dylan Egr had 5 assists.
Wahoo improved to 24-2 and will head to Lincoln next weekend for the Boys State Tournament. Logan View ends its season at 21-5.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 70-64 in the Subdistrict Final at Waverly on Thursday night.
Wahoo jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game on a trey from Brendan Lacey and a Winston Cook drive. Neumann then scored the next eight points to go up 8-5, and increased the lead to 22-12 late in the first. A Brendan Lacey lay up to end the quarter left Wahoo down 22-14 after one. Neumann was 6-7 from behind the arc in the first quarter.
The Warriors chipped away at the lead in the second quarter. Cook scored five consecutive points to make it 22-19. A Cameron Quick bucket cut the Cavalier lead to 29-25 at half.
After a Neumann three to open the third period, the Warriors went on a 10-3 run. A Quick bucket tied the game at 35. A Quick three-point play gave Wahoo its first lead since early in the game at 40-38. A Brendan Lacey trey to end the quarter put Wahoo up 48-46 after three.
A Cook bucket to open the fourth quarter put Wahoo up 50-46. A minute later, Billy Hancock was fouled on a three-point attempt. He hit all three free throws to put Wahoo up 55-50. After a Neumann trey, Quick converted a lay up to make it 57-53. Another Neumann trey cut the lead to 57-56 with 4:00 left.
A Neumann free throw tied the game at 57 with 3:00 to play. Another Quick bucket made it 59-57. Two Will Shanahan free throws extended the lead to 61-57 with 2:36 left. Neumann’s 14th trey of the game cut the lead to 61-60 with 2:12 to play. A huge Hancock trey with 1:56 left put Wahoo up 64-60. After Neumann cut the lead to 64-62, a Cook assist to Shanahan made it 66-62. A Neumann turnover with 30 seconds left gave the ball back to Wahoo. Brendan Lacey hit two free throws to make it 68-62 with 25 seconds left. A Neumann bucket made it 68-64, but Quick hit two more free throws with seven seconds left to ice the win for the Warriors.
“Really proud of our kids,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “When the other team goes 14-27 from three, and 10-11 at the line, it is not often you win those games. Our kids did a great job on the glass tonight and I felt that was the difference in the game. We thought we had an advantage inside, and the second half we did a lot better job of getting the ball inside and finishing at the rim, instead of taking so many threes. Winston Cook was huge for us tonight. He had a great game.”
Quick led the Warriors with 21 points on 8-9 shooting from the field, to go with 7 boards. Brendan Lacey had 18 points on 4-8 shooting from behind the arc. Cook had 13 points and 10 boards. Hancock had 9 points. Shanahan, who had sprained an ankle on Tuesday night, had 6 points, 7 boards, and 5 blocks.
The Warriors improved to 23-2 and will face 21-4 Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Monday night at Fremont High School at 7:00 p.m. Neumann ends their season at 14-10.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Boys Town Cowboys 69-55 in second round action at Waverly on Tuesday night.
Wahoo jumped out to leads of 8-2, 18-8, and led 20-11 at the end of one quarter. The Warriors led 30-15 after a Cameron Quick bucket, and went to halftime with a 30-18 lead.
A Will Shanahan bucket gave Wahoo its largest lead of the game at 49-30. Shanahan scored 9 of the last 11 points of the quarter for Wahoo to put them up 51-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
After a Brendan Lacey trey, putting Wahoo up 59-40 with 6:20 to play, the Cowboys would chip away at the lead. The lead got cut to 63-53 with 1:30 to play, but baskets from Winston Cook, Brendan Lacey, and Dylan Egr down the stretch preserved the Warrior win.
“It was a good win over a very athletic Boys Town team,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We were worried coming into the game with their ability to rebound on the offensive end, but after the first quarter, we did a nice job on the glass, and limited them to one shot.”
Shanahan led the Warriors with 16 points, 14 of them coming in the second half, 9 boards, and 4 steals. Brendan Lacey added 15 points. Cook had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Egr added 9 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists. Blake Lacey contributed 8 points. Quick had 7 points, 9 boards, 5 steals and 5 assists.
Wahoo out-rebounded Boys Town 40-33.
Wahoo improved to 22-2 and will face Bishop Neumann at Waverly in the subdistrict final on Thursday night. Boys Town, which was ranked 9th in C-1, finished its season at 15-9.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Elmwood-Murdock Knights 67-54 on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo, in the regular season finale for both teams.
Wahoo jumped out to leads of 8-2 and 16-4 in the early going, and led 21-9 after one quarter. The Warriors hit six treys in the first quarter, with two a piece from Billy Hancock and Blake Lacey.
Elmwood-Murdock scored the first 8 points of the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-17. Wahoo responded with the next six points to extend the lead back to 10 at 27-17. The half ended with Wahoo up 30-24.
In the third quarter, the Knights cut the lead to 33-32. A trey from Hancock and a Winston Cook bucket pushed the lead back to 38-32. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 44-41.
The Warriors scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter on a trey from Brendan Lacey and two buckets from Will Shanahan to make it 51-44. The Knights answered with a trey to cut the lead to 51-44. Two more buckets from Shanahan and a trey from Hancock gave the Warriors a 58-44 lead. The Warriors were able to knock down enough free throws down the stretch to put the game away for the 67-54 win.
“This was a really good win for our team. Elmwood-Murdock has a really nice team. I thought we offensive rebounded extremely well today. Billy Hancock hit some big treys for us today, and Will Shanahan had an amazing second half. He finished around the rim, got some tough boards and protected our rim with five big blocks. He can take our team to a new level, if he can continue to do that,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Hancock led the Warriors with 21 points on six treys. Brendan Lacey had 14 points and 6 boards. Shanahan had 12 points, 10 boards, and 5 blocks. Cook added 11 points and 6 boards. Dylan Egr had 6 boards, and 6 assists. Cameron Quick had 6 boards, and 4 steals. Blake Lacey added 8 points and 4 assists.
Wahoo had 21 offensive rebounds and had a 36-27 advantage on the glass. Wahoo also had just 8 turnovers on the day.
Wahoo improved to 21-2 and will play the winner of Boys Town and D.C. West in subdistrict action at Waverly on Tuesday. Elmwood-Murdock dropped to 19-3.

“It was a good weekend for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It was a little bit of a slow start, but once we got going, we played pretty well. Our defense was pretty good, and our ball movement was good offensively.”

The Warriors led 21-12 after one quarter of play, and extended the lead to 37-19 at halftime on a four-point play from Brendan Lacey with one second left.
Wahoo continued to extend the lead in the third quarter and led 57-32 after three quarters.
“I thought we were much sharper than on Tuesday. We moved the ball better and had more patience on the offensive end,” said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Brendan Lacey had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Winston Cook had 15 points and 5 assists. Dylan Egr had 12 points. Will Shanahan added 11 points and 6 boards.
Wahoo forced 29 Lakeview turnovers and out-rebounded the Vikings 35-26.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 61-53 on Tuesday night in Wahoo.
The Shamrocks led 16-12 late in the first. Two free throws by Brendan Lacey and a long pass ahead from Dylan Egr to Lacey for a layup and free throw with .2 seconds left put Wahoo up 17-16 after one.
Wahoo extended the lead to 36-28 by halftime. The Warriors led 50-36 after three quarters, and after Brendan Lacey’s bucket with 6:50 to play, Wahoo had their biggest lead of the game at 52-36.
The Shamrocks would score the next six points to cut the lead to 52-42. Scotus got as close as 5 at 56-51 with 30 seconds left, but free throws from Billy Hancock, Brendan Lacey, and Blake Lacey iced the game for the Warriors.
“It was not one of our better games,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We were very impatient offensively. We took some really quick shots and made some poor decisions passing the ball. We need to be sharper down the stretch.”
Brendan Lacey led the Warriors with 28 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor, and 11-14 from the line. Lacey’s 28 points pushed him over the 1,000-point mark for his career. He became only the 12th player in school history to reach this milestone.
Blake Lacey added 10 points. Hancock added 9 points and 9 boards. Will Shanahan had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Egr had 5 assists.
Wahoo improved to 18-2, and will host Columbus Lakeview on Friday night. Columbus Scotus dropped to 6-14.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the #4-ranked Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 60-50 on Saturday night in Grand Island.
The Crusaders jumped on the Warriors early, and got out to an 8-0 lead. The Warriors cut the lead to 17-13 by the end of the first quarter.
A Dylan Egr jumper at the second quarter buzzer put Wahoo up 23-21 at the halftime break.
After GICC tied the game at 23, the Warriors went on a 7-0 run. A Will Shanahan bucket, a three-point play from Brendan Lacey, and a Blake Lacey bucket put Wahoo up 30-23. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 36-29.
Two Shanahan free throws extended the lead to 38-29 early in the fourth. The Crusaders chopped away at the lead, and after a three-point bucket from the Crusaders with 4:00 minutes to play, the lead was 40-38. On the ensuing possession, Bill Hancock nailed a big trey. The next possession, Brendan Lacey converted a three-point play, and on the next possession, Hancock hit another trey to push the lead back to 49-38 with 2:30 left. The Warriors would make enough free throws in the final 2:30 to hold on for the 60-50 win.
“This was a really good road win against an excellent Central Catholic team. They came out and got after us early, but I was pleased with how we responded, and chipped away at the lead, and got ourselves back in the game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Billy Hancock hit two huge treys in the fourth quarter, and Brendan Lacey hit some big shots for us. Will Shanahan had a nice night for us also. We also could have made things easier on ourselves by shooting our free throws better.”
Brendan Lacey led Wahoo with 18 points and 8 boards. Will Shanahan had 13 points. Billy Hancock had 11 points.
The Warriors were just 19-35 (54.3 percent) from the foul line.
Wahoo improved to 17-2, and will host Columbus Scotus on Tuesday night. GICC dropped to 15-5.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Platteview Trojans 72-53 in the finals of the Capitol Conference Tournament.
Platteview jumped out to a 12-2 lead on the Warriors and led 23-15 after one. The lead was 10 at 39-29, when the Trojans drained a three at the halftime buzzer to go in up 42-29.
Platteview led 55-36 late in the third, but the Warriors scored the final 5 points of the quarter to cut the lead to 55-41 after three quarters. Wahoo cut the lead to 57-46 with 4:50 left, but Platteview promptly went on an 8-0 run to seal the win.
“It was important for us to get off to a good start, and it did not happen,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It is tough to play from behind against a great team like Platteview. They shot it really well, and never let us mount a serious comeback.”

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Raymond Central Mustangs 83-37 in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament on Wednesday evening in Wahoo.
Raymond Central gave Wahoo a battle in the first half. Central had leads of 5-0, and 9-4 early. The first quarter ended with Wahoo up 19-12, and they went to the halftime break with a 7-point lead at 34-27.
The Warriors opened it up in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 31-5, to take control of the game.
“Give Central credit for coming out and playing well early. They were outhustling us to loose balls and playing harder than we were. We shot the ball very poorly from the free throw line. It was good to see us turn it up in the second half,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Wahoo was 13-33 from the free throw line for the game, 39.4 percent. Wahoo forced 37 Mustang turnovers and out-rebounded them 38-24.

Platteview tied the game at 17 in the second quarter. Wahoo led 28-26, when Blake Lacey hit a trey at the buzzer to send Wahoo to the break with a 31-26 lead.
A trey from Billy Hancock and a Quick bucket gave Wahoo a 10-point third quarter lead at 38-28. Platteview scored 6 quick points to cut the lead to 38-34. The third quarter ended with the game tied at 42.
A Quick free throw and a Will Shanahan free throw gave Wahoo a 45-42 lead with 6:55 left in the game. Those would be the Warriors’ final points of the game though. Wahoo went ice cold from the perimeter in the final seven minutes, and had six shots in the paint blocked by Platteview’s 6’10” Brady Heiman. It was still a three-point game at 48-45 with three minutes left, but the Warriors’ inability to get anything to fall offensively would cost the Warriors the chance at the win.
“I liked how we played for two and a half quarters,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We competed well. We just could not get the rebounds we needed, or the shots to fall down the stretch. Give Platteview and Brady Heiman credit for making the plays they needed in the fourth quarter.”
Platteview out-rebounded Wahoo 44-30 and blocked 12 Warrior shots from the field.

Crete hit three consecutive treys to open the third quarter, with only an Egr three from Wahoo to cut the lead to 38-33. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 48-41.
Wahoo maintained the 6-8 point lead through the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. With 3:00 left, a Brendan Lacey free throw put Wahoo up 57-50. The Cardinals answered with a trey to cut the lead to 57-53. A minute later, a Quick free throw made it 58-53. Another Cardinal trey with 2:00 left cut the Wahoo lead to 58-56. Two big Quick free throws made it 60-56. A third consecutive Cardinal trey made it 60-59 with 30 seconds left.
On the next possession, Shanahan converted two big free throws to make it 62-59. After a missed Cardinal trey, Billy Hancock was fouled and made both free throws to ice the game at 64-59. Winston Cook added one more free throw with 15 seconds left, to finish the game at 65-59.
“This was a big win for us,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Crete has an excellent team. We knew it would take a great effort to get them, and we got that from our kids today. I thought we played really hard, and competed very well.
Brendan Lacey led four Warriors in double figures with 16 points, on 7-8 free throws. Quick had 12 points and 5 boards. Cook had 11 points and 5 boards. Shanahan added 10 points, and Hancock added 7 boards.
Crete knocked down 13 treys on the night.

The game was close through the first quarter, with the Warriors up 20-17 after one. Wahoo broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Rockets 26-8, to take a 46-25 lead at the break.
The Warriors continued to extend the lead in the third quarter, and led 64-35 entering the fourth quarter.
“We played pretty solid after the first quarter. We got positive contributions from a lot of players. Cameron Quick played another really good game for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Quick led the Warriors with 19 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor, and 5-6 from the line, to go with 4 steals, and 4 assists. Blake Lacey had a team-high 8 assists. Brendan Lacey had 15 points on 3-3 shooting from behind the arc. Billy Hancock had 10 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Will Shanahan added 10 points on 5-6 shooting and 4 blocks. Winston Cook added 9 points, and Dylan Egr added 8.
The Warriors out-rebounded the Rockets 25-18, and forced 26 Syracuse turnovers.
Wahoo improved to 9-0, while Syracuse fell to 6-4. The Warriors will travel to Crete tomorrow to take on the Class B rated Cardinals.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 66-62 in the finals of the Bishop Neumann Holiday Tournament on Saturday night.
The Warriors jumped out to a 20-10 lead and led 20-13 after one quarter. Neumann chipped away at the lead, and a basket at the buzzer gave Neumann a 30-28 lead at the break.
The third quarter was all Cavaliers. Neumann outscored Wahoo 24-15 in the third to take a 54-43 lead into the final period.
Billy Hancock hit a trey to open the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 54-46. A Will Shanahan bucket made it 54-48. A Cameron Quick bucket cut the lead to 54-50. A Brendan Lacey lay up made it 54-52, and another trey from Hancock capped a 12-0 run to put Wahoo up 55-54. A Neumann trey made it 57-55. Two Cameron Quick free throws tied the game up at 57. A Neumann bucket gave the Cavs a 59-57 lead.
Hancock’s sixth trey of the game put Wahoo up 60-59. Neumann answered with a trey to go up 62-60. Brendan Lacey countered with a three-point play to put Wahoo up 63-62. Following a Neumann miss, Wahoo ran the clock down until Brendan Lacey was fouled with 17 seconds left. Lacey hit both free throws to go up 65-62. A Neumann trey was blocked by Shanahan with 6 seconds left. Shanahan got the rebound and was fouled with 2.3 seconds left. Shanahan hit the second of the two free throws to ice the game for the Warriors and give them the 66-62 win.
“It was a nice comeback by the kids in the fourth quarter. The kids have shown good composure this year, when we get down, to have the ability to come back. We need to do a better job of not getting ourselves into those bad situations. We got ourselves out of position too many times defensively and gave up open looks. We also settled for way too many threes, and that is a bad thing, when they are not going in. Thank goodness Billy Hancock had a huge night for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Hancock led the Warriors with 20 points on 6-9 shooting from three-point range. Brendan Lacey added 15 points, 4 steals, and 4 assists. Quick and Dylan Egr added 6 boards apiece.
Wahoo improved to 8-0 and will next travel to Syracuse on Friday night. Bishop Neumann slipped to 5-4.

In a rematch from earlier in the season, the Wahoo Warriors defeated the Seward Bluejays 59-56 in the first round of the Bishop Neumann Holiday Tournament.
The game was close through the first quarter, with Seward leading 12-10 after one quarter. The second quarter was all Seward, and the Bluejays went to half up 32-21.
In the third quarter, the Warriors’ press bothered Seward, and allowed Wahoo to get back in the game. Six straight points from Cameron Quick cut the lead to 32-27. A Billy Hancock trey cut the lead to 34-30. A Brendan Lacey bucket, and a three-point play from Quick, gave the Warriors their first lead of the game at 35-34.
Seward regained the lead at 36-35, but a trey from Dylan Egr made it 38-36. Another Quick bucket and two Egr free throws pushed the Warrior lead to 42-36. A Brendan Lacey trey at the third quarter buzzer put Wahoo up 45-38.
The Warrior lead got as large as 8 at 51-43 after a Quick bucket. Seward then started chipping away at the lead. Seward closed to 51-49. Four Quick free throws made it 55-49. Two Seward buckets made it 55-53 with 30 seconds left. A Blake Lacey free throw made it 56-53 with 25 seconds left. Following a Seward miss, Egr made a free throw to make it 57-53 with 15 seconds left. A deep trey from Seward with 6 seconds left made it 57-56. Brendan Lacey was then fouled and made both free throws with 5 seconds left to make it 59-56. A 25-foot trey from Seward was off the mark at the buzzer, and the Warriors survived with the 59-56 win.
“The first half was very disappointing. We did not play with any urgency or intensity. Seward definitely won the effort battle in the first half,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I liked how we responded in the second half. Our effort was much better and the game gets much easier when you play hard. Cameron Quick and Dylan Egr both had probably their best games of the year tonight. Cameron really played hard, was a force on the glass and did a great job at the free throw line.”
Quick led the Warriors with 21 points on 11-11 shooting from the free throw line, to go with 9 boards. Brendan Lacey added 13 points. Egr contributed 10 points.
Wahoo improved to 7-0 and will face Bishop Neumann tomorrow in the finals of the Holiday Tournament. Seward fell to 6-2, with both of their losses coming to Wahoo.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors 66-48 on Tuesday night in Lincoln.
The game was tight early. Lincoln Lutheran jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 9-5. The game was tied at 12 after one quarter of play.
Wahoo was up 26-25 with three minutes to play in the half, when they went on an 8-0 run to give them a little separation at the half. Blake Lacey hit the second of his back-to-back treys, followed by a Brendan Lacey bucket. Brendan Lacey then hit a three from the corner at the half to send Wahoo to the locker room with a 34-25 lead.
In the third quarter, Lutheran cut the lead to 36-30. A trey from Bill Hancock, a Will Shanahan free throw, a Winston Cook put-back, a Blake Lacey lay up, and a trey from Brendan Lacey to end the quarter, put Wahoo up 47-30 after three.
Lutheran never threatened after that, and Wahoo went on to the 66-48 win.
“We had a little adversity thrown at us. Cameron Quick was home sick, Billy Hancock was feeling ill, and Blake Lacey’s tailbone was very sore. With all of that going on, I was really proud of the kids for responding and getting the job done, and playing pretty well,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Winston Cook really had a great night for us. Brendan Lacey continues to shoot the ball very well, and Billy Hancock, Dylan Egr, and Blake Lacey all did a lot of good things for us.”
Cook led Wahoo with 22 points on 10-12 shooting from the field. Brendan Lacey added 20 points on 4-7 shooting from behind the arc. Hancock had 9 points, 6 boards, and 5 assists. Blake Lacey added 8 points. Egr added 6 assists and 5 steals.
Wahoo was 11-20 (55 percent) from behind the arc.
Wahoo improved to 6-0 heading into the Holiday break. They will next face Seward on December 29 in the Holiday Tourney at Bishop Neumann. Lincoln Lutheran fell to 3-4.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 90-41 on Friday night in Fort Calhoun.
The Warriors had a huge first quarter and first half, as they jumped out to a 38-12 lead after one quarter and led 63-25 at halftime. The reserves finished up the second quarter and played the entire second half. All 13 Warriors who suited up scored in the game.
“I was pleased with our effort and the way that we shared the ball. That was good to see,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Will Shanahan led the Warriors with 15 points and 4 blocks. Brendan Lacey added 14 points, 4 boards, and 3 assists. Winston Cook had 14 points and 5 boards.
Wahoo was 30-48 (62.5 percent) from the field, while Fort Calhoun was 12-51 (23.5 percent).
Wahoo improved to 5-0 and will travel to Lincoln Lutheran on Tuesday.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the #3 preseason-ranked Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Trojans 61-42 on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo.
The Warriors were hot early. Back-to-back Billy Hancock treys got Wahoo out to an early 8-2 lead. A Winston Cook basket and a trey from Blake Lacey made it 13-4. Two more Cook buckets and a trey from Brendan Lacey to end the quarter gave Wahoo a 20-4 lead.
A Dylan Egr trey to open the second, followed by a free throw and bucket from Will Shanahan, made it 26-4 early in the second quarter. The half ended with Wahoo up 33-11.
The Warrior lead would never be less than 18, as Wahoo led 49-27 after three and cruised to the 19-point win.
“We were not happy with how we played on Friday against Wayne, but were very proud of the way the kids responded and played this afternoon,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Our defense was much better, we ran the floor and hit the open man, and I just thought it was a lot of fun to watch these guys play today. Will Shanahan had a great defensive first half. He really controlled things inside. Billy Hancock and Cameron Quick are really playing hard for us and competing, and Brendan Lacey continues to shoot the ball very well. All 7 guys in our rotation are contributing a lot of good things.”
Brendan Lacey had 17 points on 7-8 free throw shooting. Through four games, Brendan is 11-14 (78.6 percent) from three-point range. Quick had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Cook had 10 points and 5 boards. Hancock had 10 boards, 7 assists, and 3 steals to go with his 6 points. Shanahan had 6 points, 5 boards, and 4 blocks.
The Warriors out-rebounded the Trojans 39-27 and were 8-17 from behind the arc.
Wahoo improved to 4-0 and will next travel to Fort Calhoun on Friday night. Logan View-Scribner-Snyder dropped to 3-1.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Wayne Blue Devils 71-61 on Friday night at Wahoo.
Wayne jumped out to a 19-11 lead after one quarter behind 4 treys. Wayne extended the lead to 26-14 early in the second. Wahoo then went on a 12-0 run, behind treys from Brendan Lacey and Winston Cook. A bucket from Cameron Quick tied the game up at 26. Wayne then regained the lead and went to halftime with a 33-28 lead.
Wayne hit a three to open the third to push the lead back to 8 at 36-28. Wahoo then steadily chipped away at the lead, and a Cook bucket gave the Warriors their first lead since the opening moments of the game. A Branden Lacey bucket and Quick basket put Wahoo up by 5 at 49-44, and Wahoo led after three at 51-46.
A Brendan Lacey bucket pushed the lead to 8 at 60-52. A Billy Hancock trey gave Wahoo its largest lead at 66-56 and the Warriors went on to the 71-61 win.
“We got outworked by Wayne in the first half and did not defend very well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Give Wayne credit. They got roughed up by Logan View on Tuesday, and came in to the game with an edge that we did not have. They shot it well and played harder than we did. It was good to get a win on a night when we were not very sharp.”
Brendan Lacey led Wahoo with 25 points on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc, and 8-8 from the free throw line. Cook added 15 points and 5 boards. Will Shanahan had a game-high 13 boards and added 8 points. Hancock had 8 points and 4 assists, and Quick had 9 points.
Wahoo improved to 3-0 and will host preseason #3-ranked Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Saturday afternoon. Wayne fell to 1-3

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Seward Bluejays 62-53 on Saturday afternoon in Seward.
Wahoo jumped out to an early 13-4 lead, and led 16-10 after one quarter. Wahoo led 22-10 after a Blake Lacey trey. The Warriors went to the half with a 31-21 lead.
In the third quarter, Seward battled back and cut the lead to 40-35. The lead was 6 at 43-37, when Blake Lacey hit a ¾-court shot at the third quarter buzzer to extend the lead to 46-37 after three. The approximately 70-foot shot hit nothing but net.
Wahoo scored on its first possession of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 48-37. A Will Shanahan bucket made it 50-37. Seward scored the next 5 points to cut the lead to 50-42. A Brendan Lacey trey pushed the lead back to 53-42. Seward would get no closer than 9 points the rest of the way as Wahoo went on to the 62-53 win.
“It was another good win over a quality Class B team. That being said, I don’t feel like we were as sharp or as tough physically and mentally as we were against Bennington. We need to do a much better job on the glass. It was a good opening weekend, but we have much to work on. I thought Blake Lacey played terrific on the offensive end. His shot at the end of the third quarter really helped to switch the momentum back around. Billy Hancock really played hard. His 6 steals and 4 assists were important for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Brendan Lacey led Wahoo with 17 points on 4-4 shooting from behind the arc. Blake Lacey added 16 points on 4-5 shooting from the three-point line, to go with 4 assists. Winston Cook added 7 points. Shanahan had 6 points, and 6 boards.
Wahoo was 9-15 from behind the arc (60.0 percent), while Seward was just 5-24 (20.8 percent).
Wahoo improved to 2-0, and will host Wayne on Friday night. Seward dropped to 1-1.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bennington Badgers 68-62 in the season opener on Thursday night in Wahoo.
Bennington led 19-15 after one quarter. The lead stretched to 28-20 for the Badgers. Wahoo’s Blake Lacey had a 4-point play that really got the Warriors back into it, to cut the lead to 28-24. Two Brendan Lacey free throws cut the lead to 28-26 at the half.
A Billy Hancock trey early in the third quarter gave Wahoo its first lead since the opening moments of the game at 31-30. A Will Shanahan basket made it 33-30. The teams then traded baskets the rest of the third quarter. A Blake Lacey bucket made it 46-43 after three quarters.
Wahoo was up 50-49 early in the fourth. A Brendan Lacey free throw made it 51-49. Another Brendan Lacey basket made it 53-49. A Cameron Quick basket gave the Warriors their largest lead at 55-49. Bennington cut the lead to 55-52. Another Quick basket made it 57-52. The Badgers again cut the lead to 57-56. Two Hancock free throws made it 59-56 with 1:06 left. After a Badger miss, two free throws from Shanahan made it 61-56. A Brendan Lacey lay up made it 63-56. The Badgers cut the lead to 63-60 with 31 seconds left. Four Blake Lacey free throws in the final 20 seconds allowed the Warriors to escape with the 68-62 victory.
“This was an excellent high school game to kick off the season,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We really had to battle against a very good Bennington team. I like our kids’ poise and resiliency. I thought our ability to play pretty solid man-to-man defense was big for us. Brendan Lacey did a great job guarding Cooper Prososki and got him slowed down. Blake Lacey hit some clutch free throws at the end. I thought Will Shanahan played really tough and had a great night for us.”
