Wahoo players hoist the Class C-1 championship trophy
following the Warriors' 45-42 win over Boone Central on Saturday!

The Wahoo Warriors won their 10th State Championship in boys basketball and first since 1998, when they defeated the Boone Central Cardinals 45-42 on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center!

Boone Central hit back-to-back three pointers to open up a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter. A Ben Scheef free throw and a Brook Stuart trey cut the lead to 6-4. The Cardinals led 14-9 after one quarter.

A Stuart trey and a Quinn McGill jumper tied the game up early in the second quarter at 14. A Jake Scheef lay up gave Wahoo their first lead of the game at 20-19 late in the second quarter. The two teams went to halftime tied at 20.

The Cardinals hit a trey to open the third quarter and take a 23-20 lead. Wahoo would go on a 10-0 run to take a 30-23 lead. A Jonathan Abbott lay up, another Stuart trey, a McGill three-point play and a B. Scheef basket capped the 10-0 run.

The Cardinals would respond with a run of their own. An 8-0 run gave the lead back to the Cardinals at 31-30. A B. Scheef basket regained the lead for the Warriors at 32-31. That was quickly followed by a Boone Central trey with five seconds left in the quarter. A huge half court shot by B. Scheef found the mark at the buzzer to give the Warriors a 35-34 lead after three quarters!

The first three minutes of the fourth quarter were scoreless for both teams. A Boone Central jumper with 4:39 left gave the Cardinals the 36-35 lead. Stuart’s fourth trey of the game put Wahoo up 38-36. Two free throws from Boone tied the score at 38 with 3:50 left. A B. Scheef assist to Abbott put Wahoo up 40-38 with 3:10 left. A Boone Central trey put them back up 41-40 with 2:25 left. An Abbott assist to Stuart for his fifth trey of the game put the Warriors up for good at 43-41 with 1:59 left.

Following some missed shots on the next couple of possessions, the Cardinals were fouled on a shot in the paint. They made one of two free throws to cut the lead to 43-42 with 24 seconds left. Stuart was fouled with 18 seconds left and hit two big free throws to make it 45-42.

Following misses on both ends, the Cardinals had one last chance to go the length of the floor with seven seconds left. As the Cardinals headed up court, McGill knocked the ball away and by the time the Cardinals retrieved it, all they could do was throw up a meaningless shot from 60 feet away that fell way short of the mark, and the Warriors had their first Championship in 15 years!

“I am so incredibly proud of our kids. What a great championship game against a great team in Boone. Our kids competed and made just enough plays to get it done!” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Brook Stuart hit some huge shots for us today. We could not have got it done without his shooting. Quinn McGill made a huge defensive play at the end, just as he has done all season long. Jonathan Abbott made some big plays today, as he had just an incredible state tournament!”

Stuart led the Warriors with 17 points on 5-10 shooting from three-point range to go with the two crucial free throws with 18 seconds left. Abbott had ten points and seven boards. B. Scheef had eight points and seven boards. McGill added six points and six boards. J. Scheef added seven rebounds.

The win capped off an undefeated season with a 29-0 record. Boone Central ended with a 23-7 record.

The Wahoo Warriors held off a furious second half rally by the Wayne Blue Devils to hold on for the 56-49 win in the State Tournament Semi-Finals.

Wahoo, for the second straight day, got off to a great start and built a big lead early. Senior Jonathan Abbott scored nine early points for the Warriors. Two Tyler Kavan free throws gave Wahoo an early 17-4 lead. A Brook Stuart trey to close the quarter put Wahoo up 20-6 after one quarter.

An Abbott jumper early in the second quarter gave Wahoo its largest lead of the game of 18 points at 26-8. The Blue Devils then chipped away at the lead and cut the deficit to 13 by halftime at 31-18.

The Blue Devils then cut into the Warrior lead early in the third quarter and cut the lead to eight at 32-24. A Stuart trey pushed the Warrior lead back to 37-26. Quinn McGill followed with two free throws on the next possession to make it 39-26. The Blue Devils then went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 39-33. An Abbott bucket closed the quarter with Wahoo up 41-33.

Wayne then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to make it 41-38. Two Abbott free throws made it 43-38. A Wayne trey cut the lead to two at 43-41 with 5:00 minutes left.  

The Warriors did not panic though, and then made a run of their own. Two Abbott free throws made it 45-41. Following a Wayne miss, Abbott hit another free throw to make it 46-41. Another Wayne missed shot was followed by a Warrior miss, but a big McGill offensive rebound saved the possession. McGill was fouled and hit two free throws to make it 48-41. Two more Abbott free throws pushed the lead to 50-41. A McGill steal and two free throws capped a 9-0 lead that allowed the Warriors to retake control and put Wahoo up 52-41. The Warriors then hit four more free throws in the final minute, two by Ben Scheef and two by McGill to seal the win.

“Our kids just did a great job of not panicking when they made their run. They had all the momentum, and things were not going very well for us, but our kids kept playing and made some big free throws when they needed them. Jonathan Abbott just had a tremendous day for us. He made big shot after big shot for us all day! Quinn McGill made some huge hustle plays for us, and knocked down some very big free throws at crucial times,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Abbott led the Warriors with 30 points on 11-14 shooting from the field, to go with three steals. McGill had ten points on 8-8 shooting from the line, including 6-6 in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors shot 36 free throws to just seven for Wayne.

Wahoo improves to 28-0 and advances to the State Finals this afternoon where they will face Boone Central.

The Wahoo Warriors, behind a huge first half, defeated the Lincoln Christian Crusaders 55-35 in the first round of the Boys State Basketball Tournament.

A Brook Stuart trey opened the scoring for the Warriors. Jonathan Abbott had steals on the first two Crusader possessions. Wahoo led 23-5 after one period of play behind seven first quarter points from Quinn McGill and six from Abbott.

The Warriors were able to extend their lead in the second quarter, limiting the Crusaders to just five points in each of the first two quarters. Wahoo led 37-10 at halftime. Tyler Kavan scored six of his eight points in the second quarter, and Jonathan Abbott provided five more points.

Lincoln Christian was able to cut into the Warrior lead a little bit in the third quarter, but the Warriors still led 49-27 after three quarters, and the lead never got under 18 the rest of the way.

“I thought our kids really came ready to play. We executed very well in the first half. Our shot selection was very good, and we had just one turnover in the first half. We did a good job of not letting Logan Powers get going, and we got out hands on a lot of passes today! It was a great first day!” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Wahoo committed just six turnovers for the game compared to 20 Crusader turnovers. The Warriors shot 48.9 percent from the field, while Christian shot 34.6 percent.

Abbott led the Warriors with 17 points and four steals. Stuart had nine points on three treys. Kavan added eight points, four steals, and three assists. McGill had seven points, five boards, and four assists. Ben Scheef had seven points and four assists.

The Warriors improve to 27-0 and will face Wayne in the Semi-Finals of the State Tournament today at 2:00 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. Lincoln Christian finished its season with a 17-10 record.

2013 District Champions!

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Boys Town Cowboys 69-62 in the District Final at Midland University on Monday night.

The Warriors jumped out to an 11-4 lead behind two baskets from Quinn McGill and two baskets from Jake Scheef. Back –to-back treys from Boys Town tied the game up at 13. A McGill free throw put Wahoo up 14-13 after one quarter.

Wahoo jumped out to a 24-18 lead in the second quarter. Jonathan Abbott scored three consecutive baskets, and a Tyler Kavan lay up gave the Warriors the six-point lead. Boys Town would go on an 8-0 run, though, to take a 26-24 lead. A Brook Stuart trey stopped the run and gave Wahoo a 27-26 lead. Boys Town ended the half with a bucket to take a 28-27 lead into halftime.

Ben Scheef scored the first seven points of the third quarter to put Wahoo up 34-31. Two McGill free throws kept Wahoo up at 36-34. Boys Town would again go on an 8-0 run to take a 42-36 lead. An Abbott free throw made it 42-37. A Boys Town bucket made it 44-37. With 1.8 seconds left in the third, Stuart drained a three to cut the lead to 44-40 after three quarters.

Boys Town went on another run to open the fourth quarter. A steal and lay up by the Cowboys made the score 54-44 with 5:40 left in the game. Wahoo would respond quickly though. Two B. Scheef free throws with 5:17 left cut the lead to 54-46. A B. Scheef basket moments later made it 54-48. A Kavan steal and two Abbott free throws seconds later made it 54-50 with 4:50 left.

A missed Boys Town shot, followed by a foul and a technical foul, gave Stuart four free throws to shoot. The Warrior senior made three of the four, to cut the lead to 54-53 with 4:18 left. The Warriors had cut the lead from ten points to one in 59 seconds! After the free throws, Wahoo received possession and McGill found Stuart open in the corner, and Stuart buried the trey to put the Warriors up 56-54.

Two Stuart free throws on the next possession extended the Warrior lead to 58-54, and with 2:25 left, McGill found Abbott under the basket for a lay up, that capped a 16-0 run and put Wahoo up 60-54.  

A Boys Town trey cut the lead to 60-57 with 2:13 left. Two B. Scheef free throws with 2:03 left extended the lead to five at 62-57. An Abbott steal and free throw made it 63-57 with 1:46 left. Two Boys Town free throws made it 63-59 with 54 seconds left. Two more B. Scheef free throws with 44 seconds left made it 65-59. Scheef would hit four more free throws in the final 23 seconds to secure the Warrior 69-62 win.

“I am so proud of the resiliency of our kids tonight. Things were not going well early in the fourth quarter when we got down by 10, but our kids never panicked. They kept their composure, kept battling, and we got the momentum swung back around. They played like a veteran team down the stretch, and made the plays that we needed to make,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Brook Stuart hit some huge free throws and treys tonight when we needed them, especially early in the fourth quarter. Ben Scheef made some big plays offensively for us, and his free throws in the fourth quarter were huge. Quinn McGill again played so hard and does so many great things for us. Tyler Kavan and Jonathan Abbott both did a great job tonight, as did Jake Scheef and Jake Wilson off the bench. It was a great team win over a very good team!”

B. Scheef led the Warriors with 24 points on 12-14 free throws and 12 boards. Stuart had 14 points on three treys and 5-6 free throw shooting. Abbott had 12 points and seven boards. McGill had nine points, six boards, five steals, and six assists. Kavan had six points. J. Scheef added four points, and Wilson provided some great defense!

The Warriors out-rebounded the Cowboys 34-25, and made 24-32 free throws.

The Warriors move on to the State Tournament with a 26-0 record and will face Lincoln Christian in the first round. Boys Town’s season ends with a 16-9 record.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 51-45 in the Sub-District Final on Wednesday night at Columbus High School.

Neumann was up 7-4 in the first quarter, when Brook Stuart hit a trey, was fouled, and converted the free throw for the four-point play to put Wahoo up 8-7. On the next possession, Stuart hit another trey to put Wahoo up 11-7. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 13-12.

A Quinn McGill lay up put Wahoo up 15-14. A Jake Wilson three-point play tied the game up at 18 a minute later. A Jonathan Abbott steal and assist to Jake Scheef put Wahoo up 20-18. The half ended with Neumann up 22-21.

A Ben Scheef lay up gave the Warriors the lead for good at 23-22. The teams would trade baskets throughout the third quarter, with the lead going back and forth between one point and three for Wahoo. The score was Wahoo 33-32 with 2:00 left in the third, when B. Scheef hit back-to-back treys to put Wahoo up 39-32 after three quarters.

A Wilson jumper gave the Warriors their largest lead of the night at 41-32 early in the fourth quarter. The Warriors missed a short jumper on the next possession that would have extended the lead to 11.

After a Neumann basket, McGill took the ball the length of the court for a lay up to make it 43-34. A Neumann trey cut the lead to 43-37.  An Abbott free throw made it 44-37. Another Neumann trey made it 44-40. Following a Warrior turnover, two Neumann free throws cut the lead to 44-42 with 4:20 left.

Neumann missed a lay up with 3:30 left that would have tied the game at 44. B. Scheef made one free throw with 1:50 left that made it 45-42. An Abbott steal with 1:20 left got the ball back for Wahoo. A B. Scheef lay up with 1:00 left put Wahoo up 47-42. Two Stuart free throws with 13 second left made it 49-42. A Neumann trey with seven seconds cut the lead to 49-45. Two more Stuart free throws with six seconds left provided the final margin, and allowed Wahoo to escape with the 51-45 win.

“This was a great win for us. Neumann has been one of the hotter teams in C-1 over the second half of the season. I don’t think either team would say that they played their best basketball, but it was a great battle. Our kids competed and found a way to win, which at this point in the season is all that matters. I thought Quinn McGill gave a tremendous effort tonight. Brook Stuart hit some big shots for us tonight. I thought Ben Scheef’s back-to-back treys in the third quarter really sparked up and gave us a little separation,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Stuart led the Warriors with 13 points and four assists. B. Scheef had 11 points and five boards. McGill had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Abbott added seven points and five steals. Wilson had five points and four boards. J. Scheef added seven boards.

The Warriors outrebounded the Cavaliers 35-24.

Wahoo improves to 25-0 and moves on to the District Final Monday night at Midland University, where they will face Boys Town (7:00 p.m. tip-off). Bishop Neumann falls to 19-7, and still clings to wild card hopes.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 60-36 on Tuesday night at Columbus High in second round sub-district action.

The first quarter was tight. A Jonathan Abbott jumper at the buzzer put Wahoo up 12-10 after one quarter.

The second quarter stayed tight. Another Abbott jumper at the halftime buzzer put Wahoo up 24-18. Abbott had 12 first half points to give Wahoo the six-point lead.

Wahoo turned up the defensive pressure in the second half. A full court press forced three straight Shamrock turnovers, and the Warriors had increased the lead to 33-18 before Scotus had put up a shot in the second half. Quinn McGill got Wahoo going in the second half with back-to-back jumpers. A three-point play from Ben Scheef, a Brook Stuart jumper and a Jake Scheef lay up put Wahoo up 35-18 before a Scotus jumper broke the run to make it 35-20.

The Warriors would score the next 11 points of the quarter to cap a 22-2 quarter and make it 46-20 after three quarters.

“Scotus ran some junk defense in the first half, and it kind of put us on our heels. We did not attack it the way that we needed to. We had a great third quarter, and really got after it. Our full court pressure really bothered them, and we also had much better ball movement on the offensive end,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Abbott led the Warriors with 20 points on 9-13 shooting from the field, to go with four steals. J. Scheef added 11 points and four assists. McGill had ten points, eight boards and five assists. Stuart had eight points, and B. Scheef added seven points.

Wahoo shot 55.3 percent from the field while holding Scotus to 31.6 percent shooting.  

Wahoo improved to 24-0 and will face Bishop Neumann on Wednesday night at Columbus in the Sub-District Final. Columbus Scotus ends its season with a 14-10 record.

Warrior Boys Hammer Schuyler to Close Out Regular Season

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Schuyler Warriors 72-38 in the final regular season on Friday night.

Wahoo jumped out to a 21-5 lead after one quarter of play. Jonathan Abbott had seven first quarter points, as seven Warriors scored in the opening period.

Schuyler scored the first five points of the second quarter to cut the Wahoo lead to 21-10. Two Jake Wilson free throws, a Tyler Kavan steal and lay up and a Brook Stuart trey pushed the lead back to 28-10. Schuyler came back and scored the next eight points to make it 28-18. Wahoo would go to halftime with a 36-26 lead.

Wahoo scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to break the game open. A Ben Scheef bucket, another Stuart trey, an Abbott basket, followed by an Abbott steal and feed to Quinn McGill for a lay up, and a Jake Scheef basket put Wahoo up 47-26. Wahoo would lead 57-31 after three quarters.

“We got started real well in the first quarter, but did not defend very well in the second quarter, and we allowed Schuyler to get back in the game. The second half, though, we came out much sharper and were able to put them away fairly quickly in the third quarter,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Five Warriors led a balanced scoring attack that scored between nine and 13 points. Kavan led Wahoo with 13 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, to go with five boards, three steals, and three assists. B. Scheef had 12 points and six boards. Wilson had ten points and seven rebounds. Stuart had nine points on three treys. Abbott had nine points, five steals and five assists.

Wahoo out rebounded Schuyler 33-17, and shot 56.9 percent from the field, compared to 34.9 percent shooting for Schuyler.

Wahoo closed out the regular season at 23-0 and will face the winner of Columbus Scotus and David City on Tuesday night in Sub-District action at Columbus High School.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the North Bend Tigers 69-27 on Tuesday night in North Bend. Jonathan Abbott recorded a season-high eight steals on the defensive end to key the Warrior attack.

The Warriors led 25-8 after one quarter behind seven first quarter points from Ben Scheef, six from Abbott and five from Jake Wilson.

The Warriors stretched the lead to 40-14 by halftime, and led 50-20 after three quarters.

“I thought our focus was good tonight. We did what we needed to tonight to get better and to get ready for Districts next week,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

B. Scheef led a balanced Warrior scoring attack with 13 points, and added seven boards. Abbott had 12 points to go with his eight steals and five boards. Jake Scheef added 11 points. Tyler Kavan had eight points. Brandon Zetocka came off the bench to have seven points. Wilson had five points and five boards. Quinn McGill had four boards, three steals and three assists. Brook Stuart had four assists.

The Warriors forced 29 North Bend turnovers, while committing just eight themselves.

The Warriors improved to 22-0 and will travel to Schuyler on Friday night for their final regular season game. North Bend falls to 4-17.

Warrior Boys Secure Conference Championship with Road Win at Ashland

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays 63-45 in the final Capitol Conference game of the year. The win wrapped up the regular season Conference Championship for the Warriors.

The Warriors jumped out to a 14-1 lead in the first quarter behind four points a piece from Ben Scheef and Jake Scheef. The score was 14-3 after one period.

In the second quarter, three treys from J. Scheef helped to push the Warrior lead to 30-13 at halftime.  

The Warriors maintained their lead after halftime, and led 50-32 after three quarters. The Bluejays got as close as 55-41 with six minutes to play, but could get no closer the rest of the way.

“I thought we played a good first half,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “The second half, we were not as sharp. We had too many turnovers, and were not flying around defensively the way that we need to.”

J. Scheef led the Warriors with 20 points on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc, and 7-7 shooting from the free throw line, to go with nine boards. B. Scheef had 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor and six boards. Jonathan Abbott added 11 points. Jake Wilson contributed seven points and five boards. Quinn McGill had five points and nine boards. Tyler Kavan had five points and three assists.

The Warrior outrebounded the Bluejays 34-17. The Warriors improved to 21-0 and will close out the regular season with road games at North Bend on Tuesday night and Schuyler on Friday night. Ashland-Greenwood drops to 10-9.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 75-46 on Tuesday night in Columbus.

The Warriors scored the first 15 points of the game, led by Quinn McGill’s five first quarter points. A Ben Scheef basket closed the first quarter with the Warriors up 17-2.

The Shamrocks cut the Warrior lead to 12 at 33-21, but a Jonathan Abbott bucket at the buzzer gave the Warriors a 35-21 halftime lead. Abbott and B. Scheef each scored eight second quarter points.

Wahoo outscored Scotus 18-12 in the third quarter to increase the lead to 53-33. B. Scheef scored ten third quarter points. Wahoo would increase the lead to as much as 32 in the final period, before ending with the 75-46 win.

“I thought our kids played a great game tonight. We had just one first half turnover, and only six for the game. Our defense was very good, and we shared the ball very well. We did not rebound very well, but other than that, I was very happy with our effort,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

B. Scheef led the Warriors with 24 points on 9-13 shooting from the field, and 5-6 from the free throw line, to go with five boards. Abbott had 16 points and four boards. McGill had eight points, six boards, four steals, and four assists. Brook Stuart added seven points. Jake Wilson had six points and seven boards. Jake Scheef had six points, three steals, and four assists. Tyler Kavan added four points, four boards, and four assists.

The Warriors shot 51.7 percent from the floor, while holding the Shamrocks to 28.8 percent shooting from the field. Wahoo was 13-15 from the foul line and committed just six turnovers, compared to 17 for Scotus.

Wahoo improves to 20-0, while Scotus drops to 12-7. The Warriors will travel to Ashland on Saturday to take on the Bluejays in the final conference game of the year.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 52-37 in the final home game of the season.

GICC jumped out to an early lead, and led the entire first quarter behind three treys from the Crusaders’ Brett Wiens, to close the first quarter up 11-9.

Wiens hit his fourth trey of the game on the Crusaders’ first possession in the second quarter to put GICC up 14-9. The Crusaders became very patient and very deliberate towards the end of the first quarter, and early in the second. Wahoo would turn to some full court pressure to increase the tempo and pace of the game.  

The pressure started to wear on GICC, as they would not score again in the half, and the Warriors went on a 19-0 run. Jonathan Abbott’s jumper cut the Crusader lead to 14-11. Tyler Kavan’s trey from the corner tied the game at 14. Another Abbott jumper gave the lead to Wahoo for good at 16-14.  

Abbott added another jumper to increase the lead to 18-14. Ben Scheef followed that with a trey to make it 21-14. A Quinn McGill steal ended with a Kavan assist to B. Scheef for a conventional three-point play to make it 24-14. A Jake Wilson jumper made it 26-14, and Abbott closed out the half with a short jumper to end the run and put the Warriors up 28-14 at halftime.

The Warriors maintained the lead in the third quarter. A McGill steal and lay up closed the third quarter with Wahoo up 38-22.

The Warriors led 42-26 early in the fourth quarter, when Wilson converted two free throws, followed by a Brook Stuart trey and a Kavan lay up to put Wahoo up 49-26, their largest lead of the game.

“Give GICC a lot of credit for coming out and playing very hard. They took it to us for the first eight and a half minutes. I thought our kids responded very well to some adversity,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We turned up the pressure in the second quarter, and executed better offensively. We played a great second quarter. It was a really good win for us, and a great way to end our final home game for our seniors.”

Senior Abbott led the Warriors with 15 points and four boards. McGill had nine points on 4-4 shooting from the floor, to go with eight boards, three steals, and three assists. B. Scheef added eight points and five boards. Wilson contributed eight points and seven boards.

The Warriors improved to 19-0, while GICC drops to 10-10. Wahoo will travel to Columbus Scotus on Tuesday night to face the Shamrocks.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles in Capitol Conference action on Friday night 63-42.

The Warriors jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two Jake Scheef baskets, a Jake Wilson bucket, and a three-point play from Jonathan Abbott. A Quinn McGill bucket to close the quarter put Wahoo up 20-9 after one period.

A Brook Stuart trey extended the Warrior lead to 25-9 early in the second quarter. An Abbott bucket at the end of the half put Wahoo up 38-15 heading into halftime.

Wahoo led 48-22 after three quarters. Another Stuart trey gave Wahoo a 51-22 lead early in the fourth quarter, before going on to the 63-42 win.

“I thought we played a very good first half. We were not real sharp offensively tonight, but played pretty good defensively in the first half. Jake Wilson had a really good game for us tonight!” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Wilson, in his first start, led the Warriors with 12 points and five boards. Stuart had 12 points. Abbott added ten points and four assists. McGill had seven points and eight boards.

Wahoo forced 22 Arlington turnovers.

Wahoo improves to 18-0, while Arlington falls to 5-11. The Warriors will host Grand Island Central Catholic on Saturday afternoon in their final home game.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 81-54 in the Finals of the Capitol Conference Tournament, behind the red hot shooting of senior Brook Stuart. Stuart hit on 7-9 three-point shots to lead Wahoo.

A Tyler Kavan trey opened the scoring for the Warriors. Wahoo led 8-7 midway through the first period. Wahoo would then outscore the Pioneers 12-0 the rest of the quarter. Stuart’s first trey was followed by a Jonathan Abbott basket. A Kavan steal and assist to Abbott for a lay up was followed by Stuart’s second trey. A Ben Scheef offensive rebound and put-back was followed by an Abbott trey to end the quarter with Wahoo up 20-7.

In the second quarter, the Pioneers made a run to cut the Warrior lead to 22-14. A B. Scheef basket, followed by two Jake Scheef free throws, and another Stuart trey, put Wahoo up 29-14. A minute later, another Stuart trey pushed the lead to 34-17. Stuart’s fifth trey of the half made it 37-19. A B. Scheef basket, followed by a steal and assist to J. Scheef for a lay up, put Wahoo up at the half 41-21.

The Warriors opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run. Two Abbott buckets and a Quinn McGill steal, and assist to Kavan pushed the lead to 47-21. Kavan would score nine third quarter points to keep the Pioneers from mounting a comeback. Wahoo led 63-39 after three quarters, and coasted to the 81-54 win.

“It was just a terrific effort and terrific game from our kids. Brook was absolutely on fire from behind the arc. Tyler Kavan played a great game. Jonathan Abbott and Ben Scheef had great nights, and Quinn McGill continues to set the tone for our defense with his effort out top,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Wahoo had just one first half turnover and committed just eight for the game. The Warriors were 11-16 from behind the arc.

Stuart led the Warriors with 21 points on 7-9 from three-point range. Abbott had 18 points on 8-12 from the floor. B. Scheef had 14 points on 6-8 shooting from the field to go with seven boards and six assists. Kavan had 14 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and added four boards, four steals and four assists. McGill had five boards and three assists.

The Warriors won their third consecutive Capitol Conference tournament title, and moved to 17-0 with the win. Fort Calhoun dropped to 14-4. The Warriors will host Arlington on Friday night and GICC on Saturday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays in the semi-finals of the Capitol Conference Tournament on Thursday in Arlington 54-29.

Wahoo jumped out to a 12-0 lead early in the game. Ben Scheef scored the first two baskets, followed by a trey from Brook Stuart, a three-point play from Jake Scheef and a basket from Jonathan Abbott. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 14-3.

The Warriors then went on a 14-0 run to start the second quarter to break the game open. A three from Stuart and a J. Scheef basket capped the run to make it 27-3. The Warriors went to the break with a 34-7 lead.

A Tyler Kavan basket and Abbott free throw pushed the lead to 37-7 early in the third quarter. Wahoo led 44-19 after three quarters. Reserves played much of the fourth quarter, to finish up the 54-29 win.

“We were very solid in the first half defensively and offensively. It was good to take control of the game early,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Stuart led the Warriors in scoring with 12 points on 4-9 shooting from behind the arc. J. Scheef added 11 points on 5-8 shooting. B. Scheef added nine points and six boards. Kavan had eight points, while Abbott contributed seven points, seven boards, and five steals.

The Warrior defense limited the Bluejays to just 20 percent (9-45) shooting from the field while also forcing 18 turnovers. Wahoo shot 51.2 percent (22-43) from the field.

Wahoo improves to 16-0 and will take on the 14-3 Fort Calhoun Pioneers in the Conference Tournament Finals on Saturday in Arlington.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the D.C. West Falcons in the first round of the Capitol Conference tournament on Monday in Wahoo 70-39.

Wahoo jumped out to a 10-0 lead early in the first quarter. The lead was 19-4 after one quarter, and 37-10 at halftime. After three quarters, the Warriors led 58-21.

“It was a good game for us to get our reserves a lot of minutes. I thought that for three quarters our defense was very good. I thought Jake Wilson really played well for us tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Jonathan Abbott led the Warriors with 16 points on 6-7 free throw shooting, six steals and four boards. Ben Scheef added 14 points, six boards, and five steals. Jake Wilson had ten points and four boards. Brook Stuart added seven points. Quinn McGill provided six steals and three assists.

The Warriors forced 21 first half turnovers by the Falcons and limited them to just 29.6 percent shooting from the field. Wahoo was 20-26 (76.9%) from the free throw line.

Wahoo improves to 15-0 and will face the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays on Thursday night in the tournament semi-finals.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Norfolk Catholic Knights 65-39 on Friday night in Wahoo.

Brook Stuart came out on fire for the Warriors. Stuart hit three treys in the first three minutes of the ball game. After a Jake Scheef three-point play, the Warriors led 14-2 early in the game. A fourth trey from Stuart in the first quarter extended the Warrior lead to 19-7. Tyler Kavan’s fifth assist of the opening quarter came when he found Jake Scheef for a lay up to put Wahoo up 21-7. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 21-8.

The Warriors led 22-12 early in the second when they went on a run. A Jonathan Abbott jumper, a basket from Jake Scheef, a Ben Scheef free throw, a Kavan lay up, and two Abbott free throws, capped an 11-0 run that stretched the Warrior lead to 33-12. The Knights closed the lead to 33-17 at halftime.

Ben Scheef converted a three-point play to start the third quarter and then added another free throw on the next possession to push the lead back to 20 at 37-17. A Jake Wilson offensive rebound and put-back pushed the Warrior lead to 21 at 50-29.

A Stuart bucket to start the fourth quarter gave the Warriors a 52-29 lead and Wahoo would not be threatened the rest of the way.

“This was a tremendous win over the preseason #1-rated team in Class C-1. They have had some injury issues, but still have a very talented team. Brook Stuart got us off to a great start with his tremendous shooting early, and our defensive effort kept  them from really mounting a comeback. Our kids really competed and gave a great effort tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 15 points and six boards. Stuart had 14 points on 4-7 shooting from behind the arc, with all four treys coming in the first quarter. Ben Scheef added ten points and seven boards. Abbott had ten points and five boards. Kavan had a great stat line as he contributed six points, six boards, four steals, and six assists. Quinn McGill had six boards and three steals.

The Warriors shot 45.8 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the line, compared to 29.5 percent shooting for the Knights from the floor.

The Warriors improved to 14-0 and will host D.C. West on Monday night in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament. Norfolk Catholic falls to 7-7.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Raymond Central Mustangs in Capitol Conference action on Tuesday night 69-35.

Wahoo jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game. A Jonathan Abbott drive, a trey from Ben Scheef, two free throws from Quinn McGill, and another trey from Scheef, gave Wahoo the early lead. An Abbott jumper to end the quarter put Wahoo up 22-13 after one quarter.

The Mustangs scored the first six points of the second quarter to cut the lead to 22-19. A Ben Scheef put-back off of an offensive rebound, followed by two free throws from him, and a Brook Stuart trey pushed the lead back to 10 at 29-19. Central then went on a 10-2 run to cut the Warrior lead to 31-29. An Abbott trey, a McGill free throw, and an Abbott jumper to close the half gave the Warriors a 37-29 lead heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Tyler Kavan’s steal and lay-up, followed by another Stuart trey, gave the Warriors a 13-point lead at 42-29. A McGill steal and assist to Kavan for a three-point play pushed the Warrior lead to 15 at 49-34. Another Stuart trey pushed the lead to 16 at 52-36. The Mustangs then responded with a run to cut the Warrior lead to 52-45. Ben Scheef responded with a trey to close the quarter at 55-45.

Another Ben Scheef trey to open the quarter pushed the lead back to 13 at 58-45. An Abbott basket made it 60-45. Wahoo then slowed the pace and knocked down free throws in the final three minutes to get the 68-51 win.

“I thought it was an entertaining game to be a part of. Getting off to the 12-0 lead was big early. Central made a number of runs throughout the game to get it close, but each time they made a run, we responded with some big shots to extend the lead back out. I thought our kids showed great poise each time they made their run. We looked like a veteran team tonight, which was great to see. I thought each of our five starters played really well for us tonight. Ben had a great night shooting the ball. Jon was very good again tonight. Quinn continues to fill up the stat line in so many key areas and play great defense. Tyler Kavan played very well and really gave us a spark offensively in the third quarter, and Brook Stuart hit some big shots for us tonight as well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ben Scheef led Wahoo with 26 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor, and 6-7 shooting from the free throw line, to go with six rebounds. Abbott had 17 points. Stuart added 13 points and five boards. Kavan had six points and five assists. McGill had five points, eight boards, and five steals.

Wahoo went 8-13 from the three-point line, and was 13-17 (76.5 percent) from the free throw line, while committing just seven turnovers for the game.

Wahoo improves to 13-0, while Central drops to 7-6. The Warriors host Norfolk Catholic on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the D.C. West Falcons in Capitol Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo 69-35.

Wahoo jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game behind six points from Jonathan Abbott, a trey from Ben Scheef and a put-back from Jake Wilson. Wahoo led 13-5 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Warriors steadily increased the lead, and went to halftime with a 30-12 lead.

After a Preston Raymond trey late in the third quarter, Wahoo led 50-15. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 50-20. Wahoo’s lead would grow to as much as 40 at 63-23, before finishing with the 69-35 win.

“It was a solid effort from our kids. We started a little slow on the offensive end, but I thought our defensive effort was very good again. It is the fourth straight game that we have held our opponents under 40 points, so we feel very good about that. Jonathan Abbott really shot the ball well again tonight. He had a great weekend for us, and Jake Wilson really played well off the bench for us tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Abbott led the Warriors with 18 points on 9-14 shooting from the field. Wilson had ten points on 5-7 shooting to go with seven boards and four blocked shots. Ben Scheef added ten points and four steals. Jake Scheef had seven points and five steals. Quinn McGill had six points, seven boards, four steals, and four assists. Josh Langemeier had six points, and Raymond had four assists.

Wahoo improves to 12-0 on the year, while D.C. West falls to 1-11. The Warriors travel to Raymond Central on Tuesday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Platteview Trojans in Capitol Conference action on Friday night in Platteview 59-32 behind 31 points from senior Jonathon Abbott.

Wahoo jumped out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter. Abbott and Ben Scheef did all of the scoring for the Warriors in the first quarter. Abbott had 11 first quarter points and Scheef had seven.

The Warriors maintained the lead throughout the second quarter.  An Abbott jumper at the buzzer put Wahoo up 31-17 at halftime.

Wahoo was able to break the game open early in the third quarter. A Quinn McGill steal and layup, three free throws from Jake Scheef, and three points from Jonathan Abbott provided an 8-2 run that put Wahoo up 39-19. The Warriors led 44-24 after three quarters, and would lead by as much as 29, before ending with the 59-32 win.

Abbott had a career night, as he was 12-17 from the floor, 5-5 from the free throw line, for a career-high of 31 points. Ben Scheef had a game-high 13 rebounds along with nine points. Jake Scheef added nine points and five boards. McGill had six steals, to go with five boards. Jake Wilson added six rebounds.

Wahoo outrebounded Platteview 45-29, and held the Trojans to just 23 percent (11-47) shooting from the floor.

“I was really pleased with our effort tonight. We are still not clicking on all cylinders offensively, but we are really solid on the defensive end right now. Quinn McGill really sets the tone for us defensively out top on our D. Quinn just plays his tail off every single night. He just has a great motor. Jonathon played a tremendous game on the offensive end. He is really finding his shot and playing with a lot of confidence. Ben Scheef did a tremendous job on the glass for us tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Warriors improve to 11-0, and will face D.C. West on Saturday afternoon. Platteview falls to 5-6.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Crete Cardinals on Saturday afternoon 52-34.

Wahoo led 13-7 after one quarter behind six first quarter points from Ben Scheef. A Quinn McGill put-back right before the half ended gave Wahoo a 26-17 lead at halftime.

A 6-1 run to start the half, that included four points from Tyler Kavan and a basket from Ben Scheef helped to break the game open and put Wahoo up 32-18. A Jake Wilson put-back pushed the Warrior lead to 40-22. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 42-25. The Warrior lead would grow as large as 23 before ending with the 52-34 win.

“Offensively, we struggled this afternoon. We shot it poorly and turned the ball over way too much. On the flip side, we were very good on the defensive end. To hold two opponents to 38 and 34 this weekend is very good to see. Quinn McGill did a terrific job on the glass today,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Warriors outrebounded the Cardinals 39-30 and forced 22 turnovers. Wahoo was 0-12 from the three-point line and turned the ball over 19 times.

McGill had a game-high 13 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and six points. Ben Scheef led the Warriors in 12 points. Jake Scheef had ten points, six boards, and four steals. Jonathan Abbott had eight points and four steals. Kavan had seven points and seven rebounds.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Syracuse Rockets in Capitol Conference action on Friday night 65-38 behind 22 points from senior Brook Stuart.

The Warriors led 14-8 after one quarter and increased the lead to 33-20 in the second quarter as Stuart hit three of his six treys in the period.

Wahoo broke the game open in the third quarter as they outscored the Rockets 27-10 to lead 60-30 after three. Reserves finished up the fourth quarter for the 65-38 win.

“We were not real sharp in the first half, but I was pleased with our effort in the third quarter. We turned up the pressure and were able to break the game open. Brook Stuart had a great night shooting the ball for us as he was 6-7 from three-point range. Jonathan, Quinn, and Tyler really set the tone for us with their athleticism and hustle on the defensive end,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Stuart led the Warriors with 22 points. Jake Scheef added 14 points on 8-10 shooting from the line and six boards. Ben Scheef had nine points and ten rebounds. Jonathan Abbott added seven points, five steals, and four assists. Quinn McGill had six points, five boards, and six steals. Kavan added five steals, and Gavin Iversen contributed six rebounds.

Wahoo outrebounded Syracuse 40-26 and forced 29 Rocket turnovers.

Wahoo improves to 9-0 and will face Crete on Saturday afternoon. Syracuse falls to 3-7.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Elkhorn South Storm 55-53 in the finals of the Holiday Tournament on Saturday night at Wahoo, on a Jonathan Abbott 18-foot jumper with 3.7 seconds left.

A Tyler Kavan trey put Wahoo up 15-11 in the first quarter. The quarter ended with the score tied at 15.  

A Brook Stuart trey put Wahoo up 18-15 early in the second quarter. An Abbott basket gave Wahoo a 30-28 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, a Kavan steal, which was saved by a diving Quinn McGill, ended on a Kavan assist to Abbott to give Wahoo its biggest lead at 34-28. Wahoo would go the next five minutes without scoring and watch its lead shrink to 34-33. An Abbott basket put the Warriors up 36-33 with 45 seconds left, but Elkhorn South would score twice in the period to lead 37-36 after three quarters.

A Ben Scheef basket followed by an Abbott basket put Wahoo up 40-37. After two Elkhorn South free throws, Abbott scored again to keep Wahoo up 42-39. A three-point play by 6’5” senior Tony Pete tied the game at 42 with 5:05 to play.  

Two free throws by Jake Scheef off of two offensive rebounds on the Warriors’ next two possessions put Wahoo up 44-42. Two consecutive baskets from the Storm gave Elkhorn South the lead at 46-44. A Kavan trey from the corner put Wahoo up 47-46 with 2:36 left. An Elkhorn South bucket with 2:15 gave the Storm the lead back at 48-47. McGill’s offensive rebound and assist to Kavan put Wahoo back up at 49-48 with 2:04 left.

A Cal Rutherford basket put the Storm back up 50-49 with 1:30 left. An Abbott jumper with 1:15 left put Wahoo back up 51-50. Elkhorn South tied it back up when they hit one of two free throws with 1:10 left, at 51. Ben Scheef was fouled and knocked down both free throws with 50 seconds left to put Wahoo up 53-51. Elkhorn South’s J.J. Zumbrennen’s 12-foot pull up jumper with 15 seconds left tied the game up at 53.

Without calling a time out, the Warriors’ Stuart pushed the ball up the court, and found Abbott. Abbott took the ball and drove just inside the top of the key, and his pull up jumper found nothing but net with 3.7 seconds left. The Storm got a three-point attempt off at the buzzer, but the shot was off the mark and the Warriors escaped with a thrilling 55-53 win.

“This was an absolutely terrific high school game. I am so proud of our kids and the way that they competed tonight. What a great effort they gave. Elkhorn South has a great team, and this was just a great win for our kids,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Jonathan Abbott had an amazing game for us. He just came up huge for us, especially in the fourth quarter. Tyler Kavan’s three treys were huge for us. Quinn McGill gave an incredible effort for us. I don’t think I have ever had a kid have a bigger impact on a game, without scoring a point, but Quinn does so many things for us that don’t show up in the scoring column. Brook Stuart had a couple of big treys for us in the first half, and Brook is just such a solid player, and always does the right things for us out there. He is such a steadying influence on the team. Ben Scheef hit two big free throws for us in the final minute. Jake Scheef got a couple of huge offensive rebounds for us in the fourth quarter, and Jake Wilson gave us some really solid minutes off the bench.”

Abbott led the Warriors with 23 point on 11-19 shooting from the field and four assists. Kavan added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jake Scheef had seven points and five boards. Ben Scheef had six points and seven boards. Stuart had six points. McGill had seven boards and three steals.

The Warriors improve to 8-0 and will host Syracuse on Friday night and Crete on Saturday. Elkhorn South drops to 5-1.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Christian Crusaders 46-41 in the first round of the Holiday Tournament on Friday night at Wahoo.

A Brook Stuart trey at the end of the first quarter put Wahoo up 14-9. The Warriors would struggle offensively in the second quarter, and went to the halftime break down 26-22.

A Ben Scheef basket and a Jonathan Abbott bucket tied the game up at 26 early in the third. The third quarter ended with a one-point lead for Wahoo at 33-32.

A Quinn McGill steal and Abbott lay up put Wahoo up 35-32. Following a Crusader trey that tied the game, McGill came up with another steal, and Jake Scheef converted a three-point play to put Wahoo up 38-35. Two free throws from Ben Scheef gave the Warriors their largest lead at 40-35.

Back-to-back baskets from Christian cut the lead to 40-39 with a minute to play. An Abbott basket put Wahoo back up 42-39 with a minute left. After a Crusader basket, Jake Scheef was fouled with 35 seconds left, and converted both free throws to put Wahoo up 44-41. The Crusaders missed a trey on the other end. Brook Stuart got the rebound, was fouled and converted both free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the 46-41 win for the Warriors.

“This was a game that somehow we had to find a way to win, and we did. We were not very sharp, and did not shoot it very well, but Christian had a lot to do with that. We made some plays when we needed to down the stretch. Jonathan Abbott’s cut to the basket for a lay up, along with Jake and Brook’s free throws in the last 35 seconds were huge. We were better in the second half. We played better defense, took care of the ball better, and did a really nice job on the glass. It was a good win,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ben Scheef led Wahoo with 16 points and eight boards. Abbott had 13 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor to go with five boards. Jake Scheef added ten points. Stuart had six boards, while McGill had 5 boards. The Warriors outrebounded the Crusaders 31-21.

Wahoo improves to 7-0 and will face 5-0 Elkhorn South in the finals of the Holiday Tournament. Lincoln Christian drops to 5-3 and will face Bishop Neumann in the consolation game.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors 65-32 on Tuesday night in the final game before the Christmas break.

Lincoln Lutheran jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Wahoo. Jake Scheef got Wahoo started with a lay up followed by a three-point play. Baskets by Tyler Kavan, Jonathan Abbott, and another three point from Jake Scheef put Wahoo up 12-7 after one quarter.  

In the second quarter, a Quinn McGill layup, followed by five more points from Jake Scheef, capped a 19-0 run that put Wahoo up 19-7. Wahoo would go to the half with a 23-11 lead.

Wahoo would break the game open in the third quarter behind nine points in the quarter from Jonathan Abbott, and eight more from Jake Scheef, to lead 50-23 after three quarters.

Reserves would play most of the fourth quarter to finish out the scoring.

“It was a really nice win for us over a team that was 5-2 coming into the game. We got off to a slow start, but over the final 13 minutes of the first half, we gave up just four points, which was good to see. I thought our kids gave a great effort. We got some good looks offensively in the first half. We just could not get a lot of shots to fall. We played better offensively in the second half. Jake Scheef had a great game for us. I thought Jake Wilson played really well off the bench also and did a great job on the glass. Tyler Kavan and Quinn McGill both did a lot of good things for us, as did Jonathan Abbott,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 23 points on 9-12 shooting from the floor, and five rebounds. Jonathan Abbott had 13 points and five boards. Tyler Kavan added 11 points. Jake Wilson had a game-high nine boards and three blocks. Ben Scheef had eight assists, six steals, and six boards. Quinn McGill had six steals and three assists.

Wahoo forced 29 Lincoln Lutheran turnovers, and outrebounded them by five.

Wahoo improves to 6-0, while Lincoln Lutheran falls to 5-3. The next action for Wahoo will be in the Holiday Tournament, where they will face Lincoln Christian.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 60-44 in Capitol Conference action on Friday night.

Fort Calhoun jumped out early on Wahoo and had leads of 9-4 and 12-8 in the first quarter. Wahoo cut the lead to 12-11 at the end of one on a Ben Scheef trey.

The second quarter stayed tight. A Quinn McGill basket pushed the lead to six at 28-22 to end the first half.

Brook Stuart hit a trey and Jonathan Abbott scored to push the lead to 11 at 33-22 to open the third quarter. Another Stuart trey off of a Ben Scheef assist gave the Warriors a 42-32 lead after three quarters.

An Abbott trey to open the fourth quarter gave the Warriors a 13-point lead at 45-32. A Jake Scheef three-point play, followed by a Stuart three-point play pushed the lead to 52-36. The Warriors would lead by as much as 19 before finishing with the 60-44 win.

“I thought Brook and Jonathan’s three at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters were huge. They finally opened the game up for us and gave us a little breathing room. Ben Scheef had a really good game for us. It was a really nice win over a very solid Conference team,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ben Scheef led the Warriors with 22 points on 10-14 shooting from the field, nine boards and four assists. Abbott had 14 points, three steals, and three assists. Stuart added nine points for the Warriors.

Wahoo committed just two first half turnovers, and 11 for the game. The Warriors outrebounded Fort Calhoun 28-19.

Wahoo improves to 5-0, while Fort Calhoun drops to 4-2. The Warriors will host Lincoln Lutheran on Tuesday night in the last game before the Christmas break.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Logan View Raiders 81-36 on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors forced nine turnovers on Logan View’s first ten possessions, as they scored the first 18 points of the game. Wahoo led 29-9 after one quarter and extended the lead to 52-15 at halftime.

“I thought that our kids played a terrific first half. We got after them defensively, and forced 18 turnovers in the first half. Our ball movement was really good. We moved the ball quickly, got good looks and played really unselfishly. It was nice to get a lot of kids a lot of minutes. We had a lot of kids play well for us tonight,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Jake Scheef led five Warriors in double figures with 14 points and five boards. Ben Scheef had 13 points, six boards, and seven assists. Brook Stuart and Jonathan Abbott contributed 11 points apiece, and Jake Wilson added ten points. Preston Raymond had five assists, and Quinn McGill had six points, five boards, and four steals.

The Warriors outrebounded the Raiders 31-17, and committed just 14 turnovers to 28 for Logan View. Wahoo had a season-high 23 assists.

Wahoo improves to 4-0, while Logan View drops to 1-3. The Warriors will face Capitol Conference foe Fort Calhoun at home on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the David City Scouts 57-47 at home on Tuesday night.

The first half was a low-scoring affair that stayed tight throughout. Neither team led by  more than four points in the first half. The score was tied at eight after the first quarter, and tied at 19 at halftime.

In the third quarter, a tremendous hustle play by senior Tyler Kavan, when he dove to save a ball from going out of bounds, got the Warriors started. Kavan saved it to Quinn McGill, who knocked down a 15-foot jumper to extend the Warrior lead to 24-19. A Jonathan Abbott trey two minutes later pushed the Warrior lead to eight at 32-24. The third quarter ended with the Warriors up ten at 38-28.

A Brook Stuart trey early in the fourth made it 41-30. The teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes. An Abbott steal and lay up gave the Warriors their largest lead at 12 at 51-39. Back-to-back treys by the Scouts keyed an 8-0 run that cut the Warrior lead to 51-47 with two minutes left. Two free throws by Ben Scheef with 1:45 left pushed the lead back to six at 53-47. Two free throws apiece from Stuart and Scheef in the final minute provided the final margin at 57-47.

“This was a quality win. David City has a good team, a very experienced team. We knew this would be a battle coming in,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It was good to see our offense get untracked a little bit in the second half. Jonathan Abbott got his offense going tonight, which we need from him. Quinn McGill’s effort and rebounding have been tremendous, and Tyler Kavan really gave us some great effort plays tonight.”

Abbott led the Warriors in scoring with 20 points. Ben Scheef added 15 points and six boards. McGill had eight points, 11 boards, five steals and three assists. Kavan added eight boards and five assists.

Wahoo out-rebounded the Scouts 32-26 and committed just ten turnovers to 18 for David City.

The Warriors improve to 3-0 and will travel to Logan View to take on the Raiders on Saturday afternoon. David City falls to 2-1.

The Wahoo Warriors used a big first half to hold on and defeat the Seward Bluejays 56-47 on Saturday night.  

The Warriors jumped out to a 22-2 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game. A Brook Stuart trey put Wahoo up 17-2. A Josh Langemeier steal and assist to Quinn McGill made it 19-2. A Jake Scheef drive and bucket, followed by a McGill offensive rebound and free throw, put the Warriors up 20 at 22-2. The half would close with the Warriors up 26-9.  

The third quarter would see the Warriors turn the ball over 11 times after turning it over just six times the entire first half.  Seward cut the lead to 35-27 after three quarters.

A Trey Barnes trey cut the Warrior lead to 3 at 43-40. A Tyler Kavan assist to Jonathan Abbott pushed the lead to 46-40. A basket from Ben Scheef gave Wahoo an eight-point lead at 48-40. Three free throws from Ben Scheef on the next two possessions followed by a McGill basket extended the lead back to 11 at 53-43 with one minute left, and the Warriors were able to hold on for the 56-47 win.

“I thought we played an excellent first half. In the third quarter we did a very poor job of taking care of the ball. Eleven turnovers in a quarter is a bad quarter of basketball,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It was disappointing to watch a 20-point lead get cut to three; however, the kids showed some poise, and were able to make enough plays down the stretch to allow us to escape with the win.”

Ben Scheef led the Warriors in scoring with 12 points and six boards. McGill had 11 points and a game-high ten rebounds. Jake Scheef had eight points and Kavan added seven points.

Wahoo out-rebounded Seward 33-28, but committed 20 turnovers and shot just 54 percent from the free throw line (20-37).

The Warriors improve to 2-0 and will face the 2-0 David City Scouts on Tuesday night at home.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bennington Badgers 53-49 in the opening game of the season on Thursday night. Senior Brook Stuart hit four consecutive free throws in the game’s final 20 seconds to give the Warriors the win.

The Badgers jumped out to an 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter. A three-point play and two free throws from Jake Scheef cut the lead to 11-9, and a 15-foot jumper from Jonathan Abbott at the end of the quarter tied the game at 11 after one.

The Warriors slowly opened up a lead on the Badgers. A Preston Raymond feed to Ben Scheef gave Wahoo its largest lead of the night at 26-19. Bennington would cut the lead to 30-28 at halftime.

Wahoo again opened the lead up in the third quarter. Jake Scheef found Ben Scheef under the basket to make it 37-31, but again could not shake Bennington. A Josh Langemeier steal and lay up made it 44-40, but a Bennington basket to close the half made it 44-42 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter stayed close. A Ben Scheef free throw with 45 seconds to play made it 49-46. After a Badger miss, the Warriors ran some clock. Brook Stuart was fouled with 20 seconds left and made both free throws to put Wahoo up 51-46. A Grant Sieckman trey in the corner cut the lead to 51-49. The Warriors missed a free throw, but a tremendous effort play from Abbott and Quinn McGill on the miss, got the ball back for the Warriors. Stuart was fouled again with six seconds left and converted both free throws to seal the win for the Warriors.

“We did not get off to a good start, but I thought our kids really competed well. They kept their composure, kept battling, and made just enough plays to get it done. Jonathan Abbott played a great first half, and his effort play off the missed free throw in the final 10 seconds was huge. Brook Stuart’s four free throws in the final 18 seconds were clutch. Seniors step up and hit big free throws at crunch time, and that is what Brook did. I thought Jake Scheef really gave us a spark early when we were down early. Quinn McGill gave a tremendous effort tonight, and after a slow start, Ben Scheef played well the final three quarters,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ben Scheef led a balanced Wahoo attack with 14 points. Abbott had 12 points and four steals. Stuart had ten points. Jake Scheef had eight points off the bench, and McGill added seven points and eight boards.

The Warriors will now host the Seward Bluejays on Saturday afternoon.
