STATE BASKETBALL:
The Wahoo Warriors earned the #5 seed via wildcard in Class C-1 for the 2017 NSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament, which was played March 9-11 in Lincoln. Wahoo debuted in Game 2 on Thursday, where they knocked out the #4-seeded Gothenburg Swedes 84-47 at the Devaney Center! On Friday morning, Wahoo fought deficits that reached up to 11 points, but in the end came on strong to upset the #1-seeded Winnebago Indians 55-52 in the C-1 Semifinal Pinnacle Bank Arena! Wahoo then faced #2 Bishop Neumann in a cross-town championship on Saturday at Pinnacle, but fell short, as the Cavaliers defeated the Warriors 80-57. The NSAA Boys Basketball C1-3 Subdistrict will be played Monday-Thursday, February 20-23 at Waverly High School. Wahoo earned the #2 seed, and solidly defeated #3 Lincoln Lutheran in Game 3 on Tuesday, Feb. 21, with a final score of 89-52. The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 75-46 in the Subdistrict Finals on Thursday night in Waverly.
Neumann jumped out to a 20-8 lead after one quarter. The Cavaliers increased their lead to 27-12 early in the second. The Warriors then went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 29-22. Neumann then went to half with a 39-26 halftime lead.
Wahoo scored the first four points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 39-30, but that would be as close as the Warriors would get. The lead grew to 56-37 after three quarters, and Neumann continued to extend the lead throughout the 4th quarter.
“Neumann has such great length and athleticism. They guard extremely well, and made everything tough for us offensively. They got off to such a hot start, it just put us behind the 8 ball all night,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Neumann was 10-19 from three-point range, and outrebounded the Warriors 33-19.
Jake Ruzicka led Wahoo with 15 points, and Brendan Lacey added 9.
Wahoo dropped to 20-5 and now must hope for a Gothenburg win in their district final, in order to qualify for a wild card birth. Neumann improved to 22-3.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors 89-52 in the second round of subdistrict action Tuesday night at Waverly.
The Warriors rode their hot three-point shooting to the win. They made a school record 18 treys, which is also 9th all time in the state of Nebraska. The previous school record was 17 treys set in 1991 against Valley.
Wahoo jumped out to a lead of 17-3, and led 30-9 after one quarter. Dylan Egr hit five first-quarter treys.
Wahoo continued to extend the lead in the second quarter, as they built leads of 35-10 and 44-15. The halftime score was 56-28. Jake Ruzicka added two second-quarter treys, Brendan Lacey added two, and Egr added another trey. Billy Hancock also had three first-half treys.
The third quarter saw Wahoo go cold, but still led 66-44. The fourth quarter saw Wahoo open up the lead again, and the Warriors led 79-46 with five minutes left.
“It was a great night for shooting the ball. Dylan had an unbelievable first half. Everybody was shooting it well early,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “You want to be playing your best basketball at this time of year, and hopefully this carries over to Thursday night.”
Wahoo was 13-17 from behind the arc in the first half. Wahoo outrebounded Lincoln Lutheran 31-25, and forced 24 Lutheran turnovers.
Egr had a career-high 30 points on 7-12 shooting from behind the arc, and 10-17 overall from the floor, to go with 4 assists. Hancock had 15 points on 5-10 shooting from 3-point land, to go with 6 boards. Cameron Quick added 13 points, 5 boards, and 5 steals. Ruzicka had 8 points and 6 assists. Lacey added 8 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Will Shanahan added 10 boards.
Wahoo improved to 20-4 and will face Bishop Neumann on Thursday night in the Subdistrict final at Waverly. Lincoln Lutheran ended its season at 12-11.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Schuyler Warriors 61-38 in the regular season finale Friday night at Schuyler.
Wahoo led 16-11 after one quarter, and 26-19 at the break. In the third quarter, Wahoo was able to open up the lead and led 45-31 after three, and went on to the 61-38 win.
“We were not very sharp in the first half. We did not play with a great deal of urgency and intensity. The second half was better,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Brendan Lacey led four guys in double figures for Wahoo with 16 points. Cameron Quick added 13 points, 9 boards, and 6 steals. Dylan Egr had 12 points and 5 assists, and Will Shanahan added 10 points and 5 boards.
Wahoo had just 9 turnovers while forcing 18 Schuyler turnovers.
Wahoo improved to 19-4 and will face Lincoln Lutheran on Tuesday in first round subdistrict action at Waverly. Schuyler dropped to 6-13.

The Warriors jumped out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter, and extended it to 40-11 at halftime. They led 58-18 after three quarters.
“I thought we played well on both ends of the floor. It was good to get a lot of guys some quality time,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cameron Quick led Wahoo with 17 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor, and added 4 steals. Winston Cook added 14 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc. Will Shanahan had 13 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor and 7 boards. Brendan Lacey contributed 9 points and 5 steals.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus Lakeview Vikings 68-44 in Columbus on Friday night.
Wahoo led 14-5 after one quarter, and really opened the game up in the second quarter, outscoring the Vikings 26-9, to take a 40-14 halftime lead. The lead grew and the Warriors led 56-27 after three quarters.
“I thought we came out and played a nice first half and did what we needed to do to put the game away by halftime. It was good to see Billy Hancock really shoot it well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Brendan Lacey led the Warriors with 16 points. Billy Hancock was 5-6 from behind the arc for his 15 points, and Cameron Quick added 11. Dylan Egr added 5 assists.
Wahoo forced 25 Lakeview turnovers, and were 8-17 from behind the arc.
Wahoo improved to 17-4, while Lakeview dropped to 1-19. Wahoo faces Capitol Conference rival Ashland-Greenwood tomorrow in Wahoo for the final home game.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the top-ranked Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 61-50 on Tuesday night in Columbus.
The Warriors led for much of the first three quarters. Wahoo was down by one at 16-15 after one quarter.
Cameron Quick scored the final 5 points of the second quarter for Wahoo, as the Warriors went to the halftime break with a 28-25 lead.
Scotus made a run early in the third to take a 33-30 lead. Back-to-back treys from Billy Hancock and Brendan Lacey put Wahoo back on top at 36-33. A Jake Ruzicka trey to end the quarter tied the game at 45 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Warriors went cold to start the fourth. Wahoo missed shots on their first five possessions, while the Shamrocks went on an 8-0 run to take a 53-45 lead. A Dylan Egr trey cut the lead to 57-50 with two minutes left, but that was as close as Wahoo would get, as Scotus made four free throws down the stretch to close out the 61-50 win.
“We went toe-to-toe for the first 24 minutes with a great team, but the offense dried up for us in the fourth quarter,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Scotus’ length and athleticism made things tough for us. We shot too many threes instead of attacking the rim more. We also did not rebound well enough to give ourselves a chance.”
Wahoo was just 3-9 from the line, while Scotus was 21-27. The Warriors were also out-rebounded 34-22 and put up 29 treys, compared to just 20 from two-point range.
Ruzicka led Wahoo with 15 points and 7 boards. Hancock added 9 points. Egr and Quick contributed 8 points apiece. Quick also added 6 boards.
Columbus Scotus improved to 18-1, while Wahoo dropped to 16-4. Wahoo will travel back to Columbus to take on Lakeview on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 64-42 on Saturday night in Wahoo.
The Warriors led 16-10 after one quarter. The lead was just 19-17 early in the second. Baskets from Brendan Lacey, Cameron Quick and Will Shanahan pushed the lead to 25-18. A trey from Lacey made it 28-18, and the Warriors went to the break up 30-21.
Wahoo broke the game open early in the third quarter. Baskets from Dylan Egr, Lacey, and Jake Ruzicka made it 36-21. The Warriors would outscore the Crusaders 20-3 in the third quarter to take a 50-24 lead into the final quarter.
“It was a nice win. Other than not taking great care of the ball, I like just about everything about this game. I thought our defense was good. I thought we played hard, and I thought we shared the ball. It was a good game to have going into Tuesday night’s game with Scotus,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Lacey led the Warriors with 21 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc. Ruzicka had 16 points, 5 boards, and 5 steals. Shanahan added 10 points and 6 boards. Quick had 10 points and 6 assists. Hancock added 5 assists.
Wahoo was 22-36 (61.1%) from the floor, while GICC was 13-40 (32.5%). The Warriors outrebounded the Crusaders 28-13.
Wahoo improved to 16-3, while GICC dropped to 11-8.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles 66-53 on Friday night in Capitol Conference action.
Arlington jumped out to an 8-0 lead, and extended it to 16-2. A three from Jake Ruzicka, a basket from Dylan Egr, and another Ruzicka basket cut the lead to 16-9.
The quarter ended with Arlington up 23-13. The Eagles still led 34-22 with 2:30 left in the half, when the Warriors went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 34-30. A Brendan Lacey trey, and a three-point play from Will Shanahan, and two Ruzicka free throws cut the lead to 4. The Eagles went to the halftime break with a 36-30 lead.
The Warriors took their first lead of the game at 41-39 on a Lacey trey. Two Billy Hancock free throws and a Ruzicka trey made it 46-39. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 48-46.
Arlington scored to open the fourth, to tie the game at 48. After Arlington took the lead at 50-49, another Lacey trey put Wahoo up 52-50. Arlington answered with a trey to make it 53-52. It would be the last points of the game for Arlington. A Shanahan three-point play made it 55-53. Two Egr free throws pushed the lead to 57-53. A Ruzicka trey made it 60-53. A Hancock trey with two minutes left was the final nail, that pushed the lead to 63-53, and the Warriors escaped with the 66-53 lead.
“We got outworked for the first half,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Arlington was hungry, they hit some shots early, and just played harder than we did. It was good to see us chip away at the lead and find a way to come back in the second half. We handled the adversity well.”
Ruzicka led Wahoo with 22 points on 8-8 shooting from the free throw line, to go with 6 boards and 6 assists. Lacey had 15 points on 4-7 shooting from behind the arc. Shanahan added 14 points, and Egr provided 10 points.
The Warriors were out-rebounded 29-21, but committed just 8 turnovers compared to 15 for the Eagles.
Wahoo improved to 15-3, while Arlington dropped to 10-9.

CONFERENCE TOURNEY:
The 2016-2017 Nebraska Capitol Conference Basketball Tournament was played January 23-28, 2017. The Warrior Boys earned the #1 seed, and hosted #8 Ashland-Greenwood in Game 1 on Monday, Jan. 23. Wahoo soundly defeated the Bluejays 79-31. Wahoo then hosted #4 Arlington in the tourney semifinal on Thursday, Jan. 26, and posted a solid 53-31 win over the Trojans. To wrap up the tourney, Wahoo faced the #2-seeded Platteview Trojans on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Raymond Central High School. The game did not start off well for the Warriors. Platteview jumped out to a 10-2 lead and led 16-7 after one quarter. The second quarter continued to be a struggle for Wahoo. Platteview’s lead grew to 28-11 midway through the quarter. A basket from Jake Ruzicka and a trey from Dylan Egr got the Warriors’ offense started. Wahoo cut the lead to 31-22, but went to the halftime break down 35-22.
Wahoo was still down by 9 at 40-31, when they started to make a run. A Brendan Lacey trey made it 40-34. A Will Shanahan bucket cut the lead to 4 at 40-36. Two more Shanahan baskets and two more Lacey free throws gave the Warriors their first lead at the end of the third quarter at 43-42.
The lead went back and forth in the fourth quarter. A Ruzicka bucket cut the Trojan lead to 50-49 midway through the fourth. Platteview was still up 57-54 when Cameron Quick converted a three-point play with 2 minutes left to tie it up at 57. A Ruzicka steal and assist to Lacey for the three-point play put Wahoo up 60-57.
Moments later a Platteview bucket made it 60-59. A Ruzicka free throw put Wahoo up 61-59 with 40 seconds left. After a missed Platteview trey, Billy Hancock was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to put Wahoo up 62-59 with 12 seconds left. Platteview missed another deep trey with 4 seconds left. Hancock secured the rebound, was fouled and knocked down both free throws to seal the 64-59 win for Wahoo.
“This was a great win for us,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Things were not looking good in the second quarter. We were getting handled. I am really proud of our kids for persevering, getting back in the game, and making some big plays down the stretch.”
Egr led the Warriors with 17 points, 5 boards, and 4 steals. Ruzicka had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards, to go with 5 assists. Shanahan had 13 points and 5 boards. Lacey had 8 points and 4 steals.
Wahoo outrebounded Platteview 33-21.
Wahoo improved to 14-3, while Platteview dropped to 15-2. The Warriors will host Arlington next Friday night.

Wahoo led 11-6 after one quarter. The Warriors were able to open up the lead and take control in the second quarter. A 10-0 run to open the quarter put Wahoo up 21-6. Wahoo led 30-13 at halftime. Brendan Lacey had 9 second quarter points, and Jake Ruzicka added 6.
Arlington was never able to mount a threat in the second half. Wahoo led 39-18 after three quarters, and led by as much as 24 in the fourth quarter, before ending with the 53-31 win.
“I was pleased with our defense tonight. Arlington did not have the best shooting night, but hopefully, we had something to do with that. It was a good win over a team that had been playing really well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Lacey led Wahoo with 17 points. Will Shanahan added 10 points and 7 boards. Ruzicka had 9 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists.
Arlington was just 10-47 from the floor (21.3%).
The Warriors improve to 13-3, while Arlington drops to 9-7. Wahoo advances to the Conference Championship on Saturday, where they will face Platteview, at Raymond Central at 6:30 p.m.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays 79-31 in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament at Wahoo.
The Warriors jumped out to a 25-5 lead after one quarter, and extended it to 49-18 at halftime. They led 66-27 after three quarters.
Brendan Lacey was 4-4 from the three-point line, and 8-10 from the field to lead Wahoo with 20 points, and had 4 steals. Will Shanahan had 12 points on 4-4 shooting from the field. Cameron Quick added 11 points on 5-6 shooting from the field.
The Warriors were 32-43 from the field (74.4%), and outrebounded the Mustangs 22-9. Wahoo forced 23 Mustang turnovers, including 15 in the first quarter.
“It was a good start to our Conference Tournament,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We will now face an Arlington team that has gotten hot, and is playing really good basketball.”

Wahoo scored the first 23 points of the game, and forced 11 turnovers on Central’s first 12 possessions. The score was 27-2 after one quarter and 55-14 at halftime.
“I thought our ball movement was really good. We shared the ball well. We were able to work on some different things and we got everybody a lot of playing time,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Norfolk Catholic Knights on Friday night in Wahoo.
The Warriors jumped out to a 25-12 lead after one quarter. Dylan Egr had 13 first quarter points, and Brendan Lacey added 8.
Egr hit a trey to open the second quarter, which pushed the lead to 28-12. The Knights chipped away at the lead and cut it to 39-30. A Mitchell McGill tip-in at the buzzer made it 41-30 at the half.
The Knights were able to cut the lead to 51-44 late in the third, but baskets from Will Shanahan and Egr made it 55-44 after three.
A Lacey three to open the fourth made it 58-44. The Knights would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
“It was a solid win considering we did not have Jake Ruzicka, who was ill. Dylan Egr and Brendan Lacey had really nice nights offensively. We had too many defensive breakdowns though,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Lacey led the Warriors with 24 points on 5-7 shooting from behind the arc. Egr had 23 points on 10-15 shooting from the floor. Cameron Quick added 13 points and 7 boards. Shanahan had 9 points and 5 blocks. Billy Hancock had 5 assists.

The Warriors trailed by 4 after one quarter, 18-14. D.C. West extended the lead to 25-18 midway through the second quarter. The Falcons led 33-28, when Dylan Egr’s 30-foot shot at the buzzer found the bottom of the net, to cut the Falcon lead to 33-31 at halftime.
The Warriors went on a 12-2 run to open the third quarter to take a 43-35 lead. D.C. West then went on an 11-2 run to take the lead back at 46-45. Jake Ruzicka countered with a trey to put Wahoo up 48-46. A Brendan Lacey bucket made it 50-46. Wahoo led 51-46 when Winston Cook drained a trey at the buzzer to make it 54-46 going into the fourth quarter. Lacey had 10 third quarter points for the Warriors.
The Falcons cut the lead to 56-54 early in the fourth quarter. A Billy Hancock trey made it 59-54. After a Falcon bucket cut the lead to 3, a Lacey three-point play made it 62-56. Two Ruzicka free throws made it 64-56, and the Warriors went on to the 72-62 win.
“We are definitely getting battle tested in these last 6 games. It was good to face some adversity again, and pull out the win in the fourth quarter. At times, we were not very good. In the second quarter, our ball movement became non-existent, and we had kids hoisting up way too many three’s. We got out-rebounded badly tonight, which is a major concern,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Brendan Lacey really made some big plays offensively tonight.”
Lacey led four Warriors in double figures with 23 points on 9-15 shooting from the floor. Ruzicka had 12 points, 6 boards, 7 steals, and 6 assists. Egr had 12 points and 7 assists, and Hancock had 10 points and 4 assists. Cameron Quick added 9 points and 5 boards.
Wahoo was outrebounded 36-23, but committed just 10 turnovers compared to 20 for D.C. West.
Wahoo improves to 8-3, while D.C. West falls to 9-4. The Warriors will host Fort Calhoun on Monday in a make up game.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Platteview Trojans 75-59 Friday night in Capitol Conference action in Springfield.
Platteview led 16-12 after one quarter. They led by 2 at 27-25, when they hit a deep three in the corner at the halftime buzzer for a 30-25 lead at the break.
The Trojans led by six, 51-45 after three quarters. Brendan Lacey had three treys in the third quarter to keep the Warriors within striking distance.
Another Lacey trey, his sixth of the game, cut the Trojan lead to 51-48 early in the fourth. A three-point play made it 54-48, Trojans. Two Jake Ruzicka free throws cut the lead to 54-50. A 10-0 Platteview run would push the lead to 64-50, and break the game open. The Trojans would go on to the 75-59 win.
“We battled and hung in for 26 minutes,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “They have a lot of weapons. When you can go 6’10” inside and then have the perimeter shooting that they have, they are very tough to defend, and we were not able to play good enough defense to give ourselves a shot in the fourth quarter. We forced just five turnovers for the game, and that is not going to get it done.”
Ruzicka had a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards. Lacey had 19 points on 6-8 shooting from behind the arc. Cameron Quick added 11 points and 7 boards. Dylan Egr added 8 points.
Wahoo was 9-17 (52.9%) from 3-point line, but just 12-36 (33.3%) from two-point land. Platteview shot 53.8% from the floor overall (28-52). Wahoo had just 9 turnovers, but only forced 5 turnovers.

The first half was a defensive battle. The first quarter ended with the score tied at 8.
The score was tied at 10 early in the second, when Crete went on a 10-1 run to go up 20-11. Winston Cook hit a trey late in the second quarter to cut the Cardinals lead to 20-14 at the half.
The Warriors scored the first 10 points of the third quarter behind two treys from Jake Ruzicka, and two baskets from Cameron Quick, to go up 24-20. Crete then went on a 17-3 run, with Wahoo’s only basket coming on a Billy Hancock trey, to go up 37-27. A Brendan Lacey trey and a Blake Lacey trey cut the lead to 37-33, and the quarter ended with Crete up 39-33.
A Brendan Lacey three-point play cut the lead to 39-36 early in the fourth. A Quick bucket and a Brendan Lacey basket gave the Warriors a 40-39 lead. A Crete trey put the Cardinals back up 42-40 with 2 minutes left.
A Brendan Lacey baseline drive and basket tied the game at 42 with 1:30 left. A Hancock steal gave the ball back to Wahoo. Ruzicka was fouled with 24 seconds left and sank both free throws. The Cardinals missed a trey with 10 seconds left. The Warriors were fouled, but missed the front end of a one and one. The Cardinals had one last chance with 4.3 seconds left, but a long trey was off the mark and the Warriors escaped with the win.
“This was a big win for us, and capped off a really big week for us as well. To go 3-0 this week against the caliber of teams we played was huge. This was not the prettiest game. It was a game where we just had to grind it out, and we found a way to get it done. Billy Hancock had some huge steals in the fourth quarter, with the biggest one coming with a minute left and the game tied. Jake Ruzicka stepped up and knocked down two huge free throws with 24 seconds left. Brendan Lacey made some really big plays offensively for us in the second half. It was a great team win,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Syracuse Rockets 81-72 in overtime in Capitol Conference action on Friday in Wahoo.
The Warriors led 14-10 after one quarter, and 35-31 at halftime.
Wahoo stretched the lead to 48-39 in the third quarter, but Syracuse went on a 9-3 run to close the quarter and cut the lead to 51-48 after three.
After Syracuse tied the game to open the fourth quarter, Jake Ruzicka answered with a trey to push the lead back to 54-51. The Rockets would score the next 7 points to go up 58-51. Another Ruzicka trey cut the lead to 58-57.
Syracuse pushed the lead back to 6 at 63-57 with 3 minutes left. A Ruzicka basket made it 63-59. Following a Rocket basket, Brendan Lacey answered with a trey with 2:28 left to cut the lead to 65-62.
On the next possession, Billy Hancock hit a huge trey to tie it at 65. Syracuse answered with a trey of its own to take a 68-65 lead with a minute left.
Another Ruzicka trey tied the game at 68 with 30 seconds left. Syracuse missed a lay up on the next possession. Wahoo went for the last shot but missed a jumper at the buzzer to send the game to overtime at 68.
The Warriors answered first to start the overtime. Ruzicka hit his fourth trey of the game on the first possession to put Wahoo up 71-68. After a Syracuse miss, Hancock hit a trey to put Wahoo up 74-68. A free throw cut the lead to 74-69. Ruzicka answered with two free throws to make it 76-69. The Warriors made enough free throws down the stretch to keep Syracuse at bay, and escaped with the 81-72 overtime win.
“It was a very exciting high school game. We were real close to taking control in the third quarter when we got up 9, but then had a couple of really poor defensive possessions that allowed them to cut the lead and gain momentum. It was not looking good for us with 3 minutes left in the game, down 6, but I was really proud of our kids for not panicking and making the plays that let us come back and get the game into overtime,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Jake Ruzicka had a huge game for us, and made big shot after big shot, as Brendan Lacey did too. Billy Hancock hit a couple of big treys down the stretch as well.”
Ruzicka just missed a triple double. He led Wahoo with 30 points on 4-5 shooting from behind the arc and 8-8 from the free throw line, to go with 10 boards and 9 assists. Lacey had 25 points on 4-9 shooting from the three-point line, and 6 boards. Cameron Quick added 10 points and 8 boards. Hancock added 7 points and 6 boards.
The two teams combined for 24 made three’s. Wahoo was 11-26 (42.3%), while Syracuse was 13-31 (41.9%). The Warriors had just 9 turnovers, while Syracuse committed 19 turnovers.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors 54-50 on Tuesday night in Wahoo.
Lincoln Lutheran jumped out to a 9-3 lead to start the game. A trey from Dylan Egr, a free throw from Jake Ruzicka, and two free throws from Brendan Lacey tied the game up at 9. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 13-11.
The second quarter saw Wahoo open up the lead. Three more treys from Egr pushed Wahoo to a 29-20 halftime lead.
Lutheran battled back in the third quarter and trailed just 40-37 after three quarters.
A Lutheran basket to open the fourth quarter cut the lead to 43-42. A Lacey trey and free throw made it 47-42. A Lutheran trey made it 47-45. Two Lacey free throws pushed the lead back to 4 at 49-45. A Billy Hancock free throw, another Lacey free throw, and an Egr free throw pushed the lead back to 52-45, and Wahoo was able to hold on for the 54-50 win.
“We survived,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It was good to get the win over a quality opponent. We struggled again from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. We got outrebounded badly, and we turned the ball over way too much, but we found a way to win. Dylan Egr and Brendan Lacey both stepped up on the offensive end for us tonight and made some big shots.”
Lutheran outrebounded Wahoo 32-22. The Warriors were just 17-31 from the line, including 8-16 in the fourth quarter. Wahoo did shoot it well from behind the arc, as they were 9-17, and forced 26 Lutheran turnovers.
Egr led Wahoo with 18 points on 4-7 shooting from behind the arc, and 5 steals. Lacey had 15 points on 3-5 shooting from the three point line.
Wahoo improves to 5-2 and will host Syracuse on Friday night.

2016 HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT:
The 2016 Holiday Tournament was played on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 29-30 at Wahoo High School. The Warrior Boys debuted in Game #4, and defeated Lincoln Christian with a final score of 83-63. Wahoo then faced a tough Elkhorn South in the tourney championship on Friday night. Unfortunately, the Warriors fell short in the end, losing to the Storm by 6 points (54-60). The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Elkhorn South Storm 60-54 in the finals of the Wahoo Holiday Tournament.
Elkhorn South jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, and lead 11-10 after one quarter.
The Storm jumped out to a 14-point second quarter lead at 27-13. The Warriors would then go on a 14-1 run, started by a short Mitchell McGill jumper, a Jake Ruzicka basket and then three consecutive outside shots from Bill Hancock to cut the lead to 28-27. The half ended with South up 31-28.
South maintained the lead throughout the third quarter. Two more treys from Hancock kept Wahoo close, and it was 43-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
South stretched the lead to as much as 8 in the fourth quarter at 51-43. A Brendan Lacey bucket, and a free throw and basket from Will Shanahan cut the lead to 54-52 with two minutes to go. The Warriors had a chance to make it a one-point game with 30 seconds left, but missed some crucial free throws, and South escaped with the 60-54 win.
The Warriors were 3-10 from the line in the fourth quarter and 8-22 for the game.
“I liked the level we played at and how hard we competed. We showed great poise when we were down. We did most of what we needed to do, to knock off a great team, except hit free throws. You are not going to beat a great team going 8-22 at the free throw line,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Hancock led the Warriors with 18 points on 5-8 shooting from behind the arc. Ruzicka added 10 points and 10 boards. Shanahan contributed 9 points and 5 boards.
The Warriors fall to 4-2, and will host Lincoln Lutheran on Tuesday at home.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Christian Crusaders 83-63 in the first round of the Wahoo Holiday Tournament on Thursday.
The Crusaders jumped on the Warriors early. They led 7-0, and 15-7, and led by 5 at 20-15 after one quarter. Nine first quarter turnovers contributed to the Warriors falling behind early.
An 11-2 run to start the second quarter gave the Warriors a 26-22 lead. Two Will Shanahan baskets, and a Brendan Lacey trey got the Warriors going. Wahoo led 36-30 at the half.
Wahoo could not shake Christian in the third quarter and the game remained close. A Christian trey to close the third quarter cut the Wahoo lead to 48-46.
A Cameron Quick bucket, a Jake Ruzicka trey and dunk, and baskets from Dylan Egr and Lacey capped an 11-2 run to break the game open at 59-48. The Warriors continued to build the lead throughout the fourth before ending with the 83-63 win.
“I thought we showed the effects of not having played for 19 days, and coming off the Christmas break,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We were very sloppy with the basketball early, but played much better the last three quarters. Our ball movement and shot selection was pretty good in the second half.”
Wahoo was 26-36 (72.2%) from inside the arc and 32-55 (58.2%) from the floor. The Warriors outrebounded the Crusaders 28-22 and forced 25 Crusader turnovers.
Lacey led the Warriors with 22 points on 8-12 shooting from the field. Ruzicka had 15 points and 5 boards. Shanahan had 14 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor and 5 boards. Quick had 12 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor. Egr added 10 points, 5 boards, and 6 assists. Bill Hancock contributed 7 assists and 5 steals.
The Warriors improved to 4-1 and will face Elkhorn South in the finals this evening.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Patriots 62-53 on Saturday afternoon in Scribner.
The first quarter was close throughout. A Dylan Egr trey put Wahoo up 16-12 after one quarter.
A Jake Ruzicka trey extended the lead to 19-12 to open the second quarter. The Patriots would then go a 9-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. A Will Shanahan bucket closed the half with the Warriors up 30-26.
The Warriors led 37-36, when Ruzicka scored 6 consecutive points. A Billy Hancock free throw ended the run with Wahoo up 44-36. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 45-38.
Two Patriot free throws to open the 4th quarter cut the lead to 45-40. Another 6-0 run with baskets from Ruzicka and two buckets from Shanahan broke the game open and put Wahoo up 51-40. Logan View would close to 51-45. A Shanahan lay up made it 53-45. Ruzicka scored 7 straight points for the Warriors down the stretch to allow Wahoo to hold on to the 62-53 win.
“We got some good ball movement against their 1-3-1 to get some good looks. We shot it well. We just did not take very good care of the ball. Twenty-three turnovers is way too many,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We had to battle against a good team. It was a good win for us. Will Shanahan and Jake Ruzicka had huge games for us.”
Ruzicka led Wahoo with 25 points on 10-14 shooting from the field to go with 7 boards and 6 assists. Shanahan had 21 points on 9-10 shooting from the field, and 8 boards. Egr added 8 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists.
Wahoo shot 54.5 percent from the field (24-44), and was 10-11 from the line (90.9%).
The Warriors improved to 3-1, while Logan View/S.S. drops to 3-2.
The Warriors’ next game will be next Friday at home when the host the Fort Calhoun Pioneers.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Wayne Blue Devils 49-27 on Friday night at Wayne.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-2 lead after two minutes of play. Wahoo would score the next 12 points of the quarter to lead 14-8 after one.
The Warriors opened the game up in the second quarter, outscoring Wayne 14-3. It was capped by a trey from Billy Hancock to put Wahoo up 28-11 at half. Wahoo increased the lead to 41-19 after three quarters.
Jake Ruzicka led Wahoo with 16 points, 12 boards, 5 steals, 4 blocks, and 4 assists. Billy Hancock had 10 points on 3-3 shooting from behind the arc, and 5 steals. Will Shanahan added 10 points and 5 boards.
Wahoo limited Wayne to 20 percent shooting from the field (9-45), and forced 20 Blue Devil turnovers.
Wahoo improves to 2-1 and will travel to Scribner today to take on Logan View/Scribner-Snyder. Wayne falls to 2-2.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Seward Bluejays 65-44 on Saturday afternoon in their home opener.
The Warriors jumped out to an early 11-3 lead and extended it to 17-5. Seward would score the next 8 points of the quarter though to cut the lead to 17-13 after one quarter. Jake Ruzicka had 10 first quarter points for the Warriors.
Wahoo would score the first 13 points of the second quarter, behind treys from Brendan Lacey and Dylan Egr to make it 30-13. The Bluejays would then go on a 12-1 run to cut the lead to 31-25 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Wahoo stetched the lead to 45-30 after another Lacey trey. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 45-34
Another Lacey trey to open the fourth quarter, followed by a Will Shanahan bucket and an Egr trey, broke the game open for good at 53-34. Wahoo would stretch the lead to as much as 24 at 65-41.
“We still have much to work on, but we were much improved over Thursday night with our rebounding, our ball movement, and our composure,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It was a good effort. It would have been good to put them away a little earlier, but I was glad that we finally could early in the fourth.”
Shanahan led a balanced Warrior attack with 15 points and 6 boards. Ruzicka had 14 points and 7 boards, to go with 5 assists and 4 steals. Lacey added 13 points, and Egr contributed 9 points and 4 assists.
The Warriors were 9-19 from 3 point range, and outrebounded the Bluejays 26-20.
Wahoo improves to 1-1 and will travel to Wayne on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bennington Badgers 59-52 in the season opener on Thursday night in Bennington.
An awful first half doomed the Warriors. Bennington led 10-2 after one quarter and 31-13 at the half. The Warriors were 4-20 from the field in the first half, and were outrebounded 22-9 in the first half.
The Warriors cut the lead to 40-26 after three. Two Dylan Egr free throws cut the lead to 7 with 6:00 left in the game at 41-34, but that would be as close as the Warriors got.
“It was a disappointing night. We really struggled offensively in the first half. Some nights will be like that. To get beat on the glass the way that we did was tough to take,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We have to get physically and mentally tougher. It was good to see us battle back in the second half, but you can’t get down to good teams by 18 at halftime.”
Jake Ruzicka led the Warriors with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Cameron Quick added 13 points.
Seward outrebounded Wahoo 34-14 for the game.
The Warriors will host Seward on Saturday afternoon.
