The Wahoo Warriors completed a great run through the State Tournament on Saturday in Lincoln.

The Warriors defeated the #3 seed Falls City in the first round 64-58 in overtime. Falls City scored with 2.7 seconds left to take a two-point lead. The Warriors tied the game up at the buzzer on an incredible play, in which Jake Ruzicka threw a ¾-court pass that was deflected into the hands of Gavin Iversen, who laid it in at the buzzer. The Warriors were then able to defeat Falls City in overtime.

In the State Semifinals, Wahoo faced the #2 seed Wayne. Wayne’s defense slowed the Warriors in the first half. Wayne led 20-14 at halftime. The Warriors caught fire in the second half, and were able to defeat Wayne 57-42.

In the finals against Bishop Neumann, Wahoo got off to a rough start and trailed by 14 midway through the first quarter. Wahoo kept battling back throughout the game. Wahoo cut the lead to 6 with 5 minutes to play, but it would be as close as Wahoo could get, before losing 68-47.  

Despite losing six seniors from last year’s State Championship team, the Warriors made it back to the State Finals for the third straight year, with four new starters.

Wahoo back playing for another title

Last summer, when Wahoo coach Kevin Scheef looked over his team and realized how many of the great players who had just won a state title were no longer there, he wondered where the Warriors would be in March.

He shouldn’t have worried. Wahoo is back where it always seems to be: playing for another state title.

The Warriors rebounded from a rough first half in Friday's Class C-1 state tournament semifinal for a 57-42 victory against Wayne at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Wahoo (22-5) outscored the Blue Devils 43-22 in the second half to book a third straight trip to the state final.

“We lost so many talented kids from last year, it was probably hard to picture this summer, getting back to this game,” Scheef said. “Heck, even in February, we had a couple of losses where it was hard to picture. I'm so proud of the kids for finding a way to get back to the state finals."

Wayne's 3-2 zone defense befuddled Wahoo early, and the Blue Devils led 16-8 in the second quarter after a three-point play by Zach Keating. Wayne still held a 20-14 lead at halftime.

Things changed quickly in the second half.

“We just kept shooting and tried to attack more, but we just started to get some shots to fall,” said senior Ben Scheef, who led Wahoo with 15 points. “Once you see one shot fall, it definitely helps, so you keep shooting and you’re more confident when you shoot.”

Freshman Jake Ruzicka hit a three-pointer, then Gavin Iversen followed with one. Jake Scheef added a four-point play to give Wahoo a 27-25 lead. Wayne's Ben Hoskins tied the game at 27 with a putback, but Iversen hit another three-pointer for a 30-27 Wahoo advantage.

The Warriors never surrendered the momentum after that, taking a 34-28 lead into the fourth quarter and connecting on 16 of 22 free throws in the final 8 minutes.

“I knew we had the talent, it was just going to come down to playing defense, because we played really good defense last year,” Ben Scheef said. “We’ve played some pretty good defense, which helped us get back to state.”

Iversen and Ruzicka scored 12 points apiece for Wahoo, and Jake Scheef scored all 10 of his points in the second half. Hoskins paced Wayne (24-5) with 11 points.

Wahoo steals one from Falls City in OT

Wahoo junior Gavin Iversen followed his instincts, and that led to a miracle play for the Warriors.

Iversen’s opportunistic layup beat the buzzer to force overtime, and Jake Scheef scored 10 of his team’s 12 points in the extra session as Wahoo outlasted Falls City 64-58 in the first round of the Class C-1 state tournament Thursday at the Devaney Sports Center.

Down 52-50 with 2.7 seconds left in regulation, Wahoo had to go the length of the floor. Coach Kevin Scheef designed a play for freshman Jacob Ruzicka to throw deep to Jake Scheef. The pass was tipped and Iversen found himself under the basket when the ball came his way.

“I really wasn’t supposed to be doing anything,” Iversen said. “When the ball was thrown in the middle, I decided to go around behind everybody. I was hoping for maybe a tip back, and that’s what happened. The ball came down and bounced at me, so I just grabbed it. I almost lost it. I didn’t have time to think, so I just threw it up there.”

Scheef’s three-pointer gave seventh-ranked Wahoo a 57-56 lead with 2:18 to play in overtime, and the defending state champion Warriors (21-5) made enough free throws to advance. Scheef scored 14 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, and his performance was big, because his older brother, senior Ben Scheef (20 points), fouled out with 1:33 to play in the fourth quarter.

“I can’t believe it,” Jake Scheef said. “We really stole that one from them.”

Falls City fell behind early but took a 33-28 lead with 3:54 to play in the third quarter after a coast-to-coast drive by Jordan Stoller. Wahoo tied it at 50 with 1:17 left on a drive and layup by Jake Scheef, but Falls City took the 52-50 lead when Mitchell Harling sneaked along the baseline and scored a layup on an out-of-bounds play. That left 2.7 seconds for Wahoo to work its magic.

“Our kids battled,” Falls City coach Don Hogue said. “I was very proud of their mental toughness. We could have given up several times when we got down big early but we didn’t. Those kids (the Warriors) played in the state championship last year, and they’re used to big games. We haven’t been in big games, and that may have made a difference down the stretch.”

Stoller had 16 points to lead Falls City (24-3).

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 67-53 on Thursday night in the Subdistrict Final at Omaha Northwest.

The Warriors jumped out to an 8-3 lead early on a Jake Ruzicka trey, a Ben Scheef drive, and a Gavin Iversen trey. The Warriors would get stuck on 8 though, as Neumann went on a 14-0 run to take a 17-8 lead.  Wahoo trailed 19-14 after one quarter.

The Warriors made a run midway through the third quarter. A trey from Josh Langemeier and a Jake Scheef basket cut the Neumann lead to 36-33. Another long dry spell doomed the Warriors, though, as they did not score the rest of the quarter. Neumann extended the lead to 49-33 after three quarters, and went on to the 67-53 win.

“Give Neumann a lot of credit. They are very athletic, they play hard, and they got their hands on a lot of balls and passes and forced a bunch of turnovers,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “You are not going to win games against good teams turning the ball over 24 times, which is what we did. We also struggled to keep them off the offensive glass.”

J. Scheef led Wahoo with 23 points and 4 steals. B. Scheef had 15 points and 7 boards. J. Ruzicka added 7 points and 6 boards.

The Warriors are now 20-5 and need help from other teams to secure a wild card spot.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles 69-52 in the second round of Subdistrict action at Omaha Northwest on Tuesday night.  

Wahoo got off to a great start by hitting six first quarter treys to open up a 24-9 lead after one quarter. Josh Langemeier hit a trey, Jake Ruzicka hit two treys, and Ben Scheef hit three first quarter treys to go with four free throws to account for 13 of the Warriors’ first quarter points.  

Wahoo continued to open up the lead in the second quarter, and after a tip in at the buzzer by Gavin Iversen, led 41-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Eagles chipped away at the Warrior lead, and cut the lead to 50-36 with 2:30 left. Brandon Zetocka answered with a trey, and B. Scheef added two free throws to put Wahoo up 55-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

Wahoo scored the first ten points of the fourth quarter, on baskets by B. Scheef and Iversen, and two treys from Ruzicka to make it 65-38, before reserves finished up the game.

“We shot the ball very well from the perimeter which was good to see tonight. At times, we were very good on the defensive end, but in the third quarter, we let up, and allowed Arlington to get back in the game for a moment. We still have to become more consistent in our efforts,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

B. Scheef led Wahoo with 22 points on 9-10 shooting from the line, to go with 10 boards and 8 assists. Jake Scheef had 15 points, 4 boards, 4 steals, and 4 assists. Ruzicka added 12 points on 4-5 shooting from behind the arc. Iversen had 9 points and 4 steals. Collin Nadrchal had 5 boards, and Zetocka added 6 points.

The Warriors were 10-14 (71.4%) from the three-point line, and forced 19 Arlington turnovers.

Wahoo improved to 20-4, and will face Bishop Neumann on Tuesday night in the Subdistrict Final. Arlington ends its season at 14-10.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Schuyler Warriors 63-46 on Friday night to close out the regular season on Parent’s night.

Wahoo jumped out to a 14-1 lead to start the game, and led 22-8 after one quarter behind nine first quarter points from Jake Scheef.

Wahoo continued to extend the lead in the second quarter, and after a put back by Collin Nadrchal at the second quarter buzzer, led 39-21 at halftime. Ben Scheef had 10 second-quarter points for Wahoo.

Back-to-back baskets by Jake Ruzicka and Gavin Iversen to open the third quarter pushed the Wahoo lead to 43-21, and Wahoo would not be threatened the rest of the way.

“I thought it was a great effort from our kids, and one of our best games of the season. It was just the kind of game that we wanted heading into postseason play,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We got some bad news earlier in the day that Gavin Iversen had broken his finger. We did not know if he would be able to play, but he tried it, and not only did he play, he played very well. Gavin is one tough kid! Jake Scheef had his best game of the year. He was really active on both ends of the floor. I thought all seven of our top guys played very well tonight.”

J. Scheef led Wahoo with 20 points on 9-12 shooting from the field to go with 8 boards, 6 assists, and 5 steals. B. Scheef had 16 points on 8-8 shooting from the line to go with 8 rebounds. Josh Langemeier added 8 points and 4 assists. Iversen had 8 points and 5 steals, and Ruzicka had 7 points and 6 boards.

Wahoo out-rebounded Schuyler 35-26 and forced 22 Schuyler turnovers.

Wahoo improves to 19-4 and will begin subdistrict action on Tuesday night at Omaha Northwest, vs. the winner of Monday night’s game between Arlington and D.C. West. Schuyler falls to 10-12.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays 54-51 on Saturday afternoon to win the Capitol Conference regular season title.

The Warriors got off to a good start, and after a Collin Nadrchal lay up, led 15-6. The first quarter ended with Wahoo up 15-11. The Warriors stretched the lead back out in the second quarter. An 11-0 run to start the quarter, which included a Josh Langemeier trey, a Jake Scheef jumper, and a Gavin Iversen lay up, put Wahoo up 15 at 26-11.

Ashland cut the lead to 29-22, but a J. Scheef jumper at the buzzer put Wahoo up 31-22 at halftime.

A Jake Ruzicka shot put Wahoo up 35-25 midway through the third quarter. An Ashland trey was answered by a Langemeier trey to make it 38-28. Langemeier’s fourth trey of the game put Wahoo up 43-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Warriors got stuck on 43 in the fourth. Ashland cut the lead to 43-41. Two Ben Scheef free throws made it 45-41. A Bluejay basket followed by an Ashland trey put the Bluejays in front 46-45 and gave them their only lead of the game.

A Ruzicka steal turned into a Langemeier lay up to put Wahoo up 47-46. Moments later, Ashland tied the game at 47 on a free throw. Two Iversen free throws put Wahoo up 49-47 late in the fourth. Ashland tied the game up on the next possession at 49. Following a missed Warrior lay up, Iversen stole the outlet pass, made the lay up and was fouled. He then converted the three-point play to put Wahoo up 52-49.

Ashland scored on the next possession to cut the lead to 52-51. After a missed Warrior free throw, B. Scheef came up with a big steal on the defensive end, was fouled and made one free throw with 23 seconds left to make it 53-51. The Bluejays missed a trey on the other end, and J. Scheef came up with the rebound and was fouled. J. Scheef made one of two free throws with ten seconds left to make it 54-51.  

The Warriors survived a missed Bluejay trey with two seconds left to escape with the win.

“We got off to a really good start, but our inability to take care of the ball allowed Ashland to get back into it. Give them credit for playing hard and forcing turnovers, but we have to handle the ball better. Twenty-one turnovers is way too many,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Gavin came up with the play of the game on his steal and three-point play in the final minute. Josh really shot the ball well for us tonight, which was huge.”

Langemeier led the Warriors with 18 points on 4-8 shooting from three point range. Iversen had 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor and 3-3 from the line, to go with 5 boards. J. Scheef added 9 points. B. Scheef had 7 points, 10 boards, and 8 assists.

The Warriors committed 21 turnovers, while forcing the Bluejays into 19.

Wahoo improved to 18-4 and will host Schuyler on Friday night in the final regular season game. Ashland-Greenwood drops to 13-7.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 66-63 on Tuesday night in Wahoo.

Columbus Scotus came out in the first quarter on fire. They hit their first three treys, to help them open up a 13-3 lead. The Shamrocks hit four out of five three’s in the first quarter, and hit seven of their first eight three’s in the game. A Collin Nadrchal basket cut the Scotus lead to 13-10, and the first quarter would end with the Shamrocks up 17-12.

Scotus extended the lead to 23-12 early in the second quarter, and still led 31-20 with two minutes left in the half, when the Warriors went on a run. A Nadrchal bucket, two Ben Scheef free throws, a Gavin Iversen shot, and another Nadrchal lay up at the buzzer cut the Scotus lead to 31-28 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, a Jake Ruzicka trey tied the game for the first time at 35. A Jake Scheef trey tied the game up again moments later at 38. Back-to-back baskets from B. Scheef, followed by a J. Scheef basket gave Wahoo a 44-40 lead. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 44-42.

The Warriors would then hit a dry spell. A couple of bad turnovers and a couple missed shots allowed Scotus to go on an 11-0 run to put them up 53-44.

The Warriors would respond though. An Iversen basket,  four straight points from B. Scheef, and a steal and lay up from Josh Langemeier cut the Scotus lead to 53-52 with 3:20 left.

Scotus responded with a trey to push the lead back to 56-52. A J. Scheef four-point play cut the Scotus lead to 62-60 with 18 seconds left, but four Scotus free throws in the final seconds allowed Scotus to leave town with the 66-63 win.

“I was really proud of our kids’ efforts tonight. We fought to the end. It was a really good high school game. Give Scotus credit for shooting the ball extremely well from behind the arc, and hitting the free throws that they needed to at the end of the game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Scotus finished 10-21 from behind the arc.

B. Scheef led Wahoo with 23 points on 11-13 shooting from the line to go with 7 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals. J. Scheef added 15 points. Iversen contributed 11 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals. Nadrchal had 8 points and 5 boards. Ruzicka had 5 boards.

The Warriors fall to 17-4, while Columbus Scotus improves to 16-4. The Warriors will host Ashland-Greenwood on Saturday afternoon.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the GICC Crusaders 74-67 on Saturday night in Grand Island.

Wahoo grabbed an early lead. A basket by Jake Scheef and a free throw by Collin Nadrchal put Wahoo up 12-7. The Warriors led 12-10 after one quarter.

The second quarter remained tight, and went to halftime with the game tied at 22.

The Crusaders came out on fire to start the third quarter. After a missed three-point attempt by GICC, the Crusaders connected on nine of their next 11 shots, including 3-3 from three-point range, to open up a 47-34 lead after three quarters.  

The Warriors battled back in the fourth quarter, and cut the lead to five with under a minute to play, but timely free throws from the Crusaders prevented the Warriors from finishing the comeback.

“We just could not get stops in the second half. The big kid is a load inside, and then the Rohweder kid did not miss from behind the arc. We were impatient offensively, and shot way too many threes, and we got beat up on the glass,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

J. Scheef led the Warriors with 24 points on 8-14 shooting from the field and 6-6 from the line, and 3 steals. Ben Scheef added 13 points on 9-11 shooting from the line. Josh Langemeier had 12 points and 6 steals. Gavin Iversen had 10 points and 5 boards.

GICC shot 55.6 percent from the field and outrebounded Wahoo 29-18.

Wahoo dropped to 17-3 and will host Columbus Scotus on Tuesday. GICC improved to 13-7.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles 75-53 in Capitol Conference action on Friday night in Arlington.

The Warriors jumped out to a 28-14 lead after one quarter, capped by a Josh Langemeier trey at the buzzer. Jake Scheef had nine first quarter points, and Gavin Iversen had six.

Wahoo extended the lead to 43-24 at halftime. Wahoo led 47-27 early in the third quarter, when Arlington went on an 8-0 run to cut the 20-point lead to 12 at 47-35.

Two free throws from J. Scheef, and two more from Ben Scheef, pushed the lead back to 51-35. Arlington again cut the lead, this time to 11 at 52-41, late in the quarter. Three free throws from Iversen and a three-point play from B. Scheef gave the Warriors a 57-41 lead after three quarters.  

A Langemeier bucket and a three-point play gave Wahoo a 62-43 lead early in the fourth, and the Warriors would go on to the 75-53 win.

“It was a good win against a solid team. We did not shoot the ball real well, but we took good care of it, with just 11 turnovers, and I thought we were real active defensively outside of the third quarter,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Iversen and J. Scheef led Wahoo with 18 points apiece. Iversen was 6-10 from the field, and 3-4 from the line, and also contributed 5 steals and 5 assists. J. Scheef added 10 boards, and 5 steals. B. Scheef added 15 points and 8 boards. Langemeier had 12 points on 4-6 shooting from the floor and 3-3 from the line. Jake Ruzicka had 7 steals and 7 boards in addition to his 6 points.

2014 Capitol Conference Champions, 4th straight year!

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays 72-49 in the Finals of the Capitol Conference Tournament Saturday in Ashland. It was the fourth consecutive Conference Championship for the Warriors.

The Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game, on a Ben Scheef jumper, a Gavin Iversen steal and lay up and a Jake Ruzicka steal and lay up. The Bluejays came roaring back, behind four treys in the first quarter and led Wahoo 21-17 after one.

The Warriors stiffened up on the defense in the second quarter, holding Ashland to four second quarter points to take a 29-25 lead in the locker room. B. Scheef had 18 first half points to lead Wahoo.

The third quarter remained tight. Ruzicka hit two treys, Brandon Zetocka hit a trey, and Gavin Iversen hit a trey in the third quarter, but the Warriors could not shake the Bluejays, and led 47-41 entering the fourth quarter.

Back-to-back three pointers from Iversen to open the fourth quarter opened the game up for the Warriors. Following a Ruzicka trey, Wahoo led 56-44. A B. Scheef basket put Wahoo up 60-45, and a Jake Scheef basket made it 62-45. Another B. Scheef basket followed by a Josh Langemeier lay up pushed the lead to 20 at 66-46 and the Warriors would finish with a 72-49 win.

“For three quarters, this was a heck of a game. Credit Ashland-Greenwood for playing very hard. We just could not shake them or get the stops we needed to until the fourth quarter. Gavin’s back-to-back treys finally got us some separation,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ben Scheef led Wahoo with 25 points on 5-6 shooting from the field, and 14-17 shooting from the free throw line, to go with 7 boards, and 3 assists. Gavin Iversen had 14 points on 3-6 shooting from behind the arc, to go with 5 assists. Jake Ruzicka had 11 points on 3-3 shooting from three-point range. Brandon Zetocka added 9 points on 3-3 shooting from behind the arc. Jake Scheef added 5 steals.

The Warriors were 10-19 from three-point range, and turned the ball over just 8 times, while forcing 16 Bluejay turnovers.

Wahoo improves to 16-2, and will travel to Arlington on Friday. Ashland-Greenwood drops to 11-5.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 57-38 on Friday night in the Semi-Finals of the Capitol Conference Tournament.

Wahoo led 13-9 after one quarter, and extended it to 33-20 at halftime. Ben Scheef had nine first half points, and Gavin Iversen had eight.

The Warriors’ offense sputtered early in the third quarter, as the Pioneers went on a 7-1 run to cut the Wahoo lead to 34-27. B. Scheef answered with a three, and moments later added a lay up to make it 39-27. Jake Scheef added the next five points, and Jake Ruzicka added a free throw to finish the 11-0 run, to put Wahoo up 45-27. The Pioneers would not threaten again.

Wahoo led 45-29 heading into the fourth quarter, and stretched the lead to as much as 25 at 55-30, before finishing with the 57-38 win.

“I thought our defense was pretty good. Anytime you hold a team to 38 points and 22 percent shooting from the field, you have to be happy with that,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We had too many turnovers tonight though, and did not shoot well from the free throw line, which had been a strength for us.”

B. Scheef had a game-high 19 points on 7-9 shooting from the field, and a career-high 16 rebounds. Gavin Iversen had 13 points, 4 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals. J. Scheef added 10 points, 5 boards, and 3 steals. Ruzicka had 5 points, 4 blocks, and 3 steals.

Wahoo outrebounded the taller Pioneers 41-26, and shot 46.5 percent from the field, compared to 21.7 percent for Fort Calhoun.

Wahoo advances to the Conference Final on Saturday in Ashland, to take on the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Raymond Central Mustangs 69-23 at home on Tuesday in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament.

The Warriors jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind eight first quarter points from Gavin Iversen, and led 19-8 after one quarter. The lead grew to 40-16 at halftime, and to 60-21 after three quarters.

“I was pleased with our effort tonight. Coming off of the loss to Norfolk Catholic, it was good to get back out there, play hard, and try to forget about the loss,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ben Scheef led the Warriors with 16 points, 5 boards, 6 steals, and 3 assists. Iversen had 15 points, 6 boards, 3 steals, and 3 assists. Jake Scheef had 10 points, 5 boards, and 3 steals. Jake Ruzicka had 10 points, 6 boards, and 4 steals. Collin Nadrchal added 10 points and 4 boards.

Wahoo out-rebounded Central 31-19, and forced 26 turnovers while committing just 7.

Wahoo improved to 14-2 and will host Fort Calhoun in the Conference Tournament Semi-Finals on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Norfolk Catholic Knights 63-56 on Friday night in Norfolk.

The Knights jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter, behind some hot three point shooting. The Knights were 4-7 from behind the arc in the first quarter.

Norfolk Catholic hit a three to open the second quarter to push the lead to 21-8. The Warriors were able to chip away at the lead and cut it to six at 32-26 at halftime.

The Knights made it 34-26 early in the third, but Wahoo went on an 8-0 run, capped by a Collin Nadrchal basket to tie the score at 34 midway through the third. The Knights would regain the lead to go to the fourth quarter with a 46-40 lead.

Josh Langemeier hit a three to open the fourth quarter, and Jake Scheef followed with a three-point play and a lay up to put Wahoo up 48-46. Langemeier then had a steal and lay up to put Wahoo up 50-46. Following a Knight basket, Ben Scheef answered with a short jumper to keep the lead at four at 52-48 with 4 minutes left.

The Knights scored on the next two possessions to tie the game at 52. B. Scheef’s lay up with three minutes left put Wahoo up 54-52. A free throw and basket put Norfolk Catholic back up 55-54. A Jake Ruzicka offensive rebound and put back gave the Warriors their final lead at 56-55 with two minutes left.

The Knights scored on an offensive rebound to go up 57-56. Following a missed three-point attempt by the Warriors, the Knights made two free throws on the other end to extend the lead to 59-56. Two more missed shots were followed by four made free throws from the Knights to account for the 63-56 final.

“We faced a lot of adversity tonight. We got down by 13 in the first half, battled back, got down again by eight late in the third and battled back again. We were 2-20 from three-point range and got outrebounded by eight. In spite of all of that, we had a four-point lead and the ball with under three minutes to play, and could not make the plays that we needed to, to finish the job. Hopefully, we learn and grow from this, and handle it better the next time,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ben and Jake Scheef led the Warriors with 14 points apiece. Jake added 5 boards, and 4 steals. Ben added 5 boards, and 3 steals. Josh Langemeier had 13 points and 4 steals. Jake Ruzicka had 9 points and a team-high 9 boards. Gavin Iversen added 4 steals.

Wahoo falls to 13-2, while Norfolk Catholic improves to 8-5. The Warriors will face Raymond Central at home on Tuesday in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Raymond Central Mustangs 63-26 in Capitol Conference action in Wahoo on Tuesday evening.

Wahoo scored the first 15 points of the game and led 23-3 after one quarter and 45-12 at halftime. The running clock took effect midway through the third quarter with Wahoo up by 40, and reserves played the final quarter and a half.

“I thought our kids played pretty well. Jake Ruzicka had a great night for us. He just continues to get better and better,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Ruzicka led the Warriors with 16 points, 6 boards, and 3 steals. Ben Scheef added 12 points, 6 boards, 3 steals, and 3 assists. Jake Scheef scored 12 points to go with 4 boards, and 3 steals. Gavin Iversen had 4 boards, 5 steals, 4 assists, and 5 points.

Wahoo outrebounded Raymond Central 33-17, and forced 19 turnovers while committing just 6.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the D.C. West Falcons 70-41 in Capitol Conference action in Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Wahoo jumped out to a 19-8 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 42-15 at halftime.

Jake Scheef had 17 points and 4 steals to lead Wahoo. Ben Scheef had 12 points on 8-8 shooting from the free throw line to go with 6 boards, 6 steals, and 6 assists. Gavin Iversen had 11 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists. Jake Ruzicka had 10 points and 7 boards. Josh Langemeier added 7 points.

Wahoo was 20-21 from the free throw line, 95.2 percent, and outrebounded D.C. 33-17, while forcing 22 turnovers.

“I was pleased with how we played. We continued a lot of the good things that we did on Friday night vs. Platteview, as far as moving the ball well offensively, and being aggressive on the defensive end,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

The Warriors improved to 12-1, while D.C. West dropped to 3-9. Wahoo will host Raymond Central on Tuesday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Platteview Trojans 77-54 Friday night at home in Capitol Conference action.

The Warriors used a huge first quarter to jump out to a 31-12 lead.  Gavin Iversen had six first quarter steals to set the tone defensively for the Warriors. Jake Scheef had nine first quarter points, while Collin Nadrchal and Ben Scheef each had seven first quarter points.

Wahoo went to the halftime break up 48-27, and led 61-34 after three quarters. Wahoo led by as much as 66-34 before finishing with the 77-54 win.

“I thought we played really well tonight, especially in the first quarter. We had great ball movement offensively, and were really aggressive on the defensive end. We forced 11 first quarter turnovers, which is outstanding. Gavin Iversen played tremendous on the defensive end tonight. Collin Nadrchal gave us some great minutes off the bench. Brandon Zetocka had some great hustle plays and did a great job taking a charge on a guy going hard to the basket, commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Iversen had 9 steals, two away from the school record, to go with 6 boards and 5 assists. J. Scheef had 21 points and 5 boards. B. The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Crete Cardinals 63-51 Saturday afternoon in Crete.

A trey from Gavin Iversen to end the first quarter put Wahoo up 18-15 after one quarter.

Wahoo was able to stretch out the lead in the second quarter. Six consecutive points from Ben Scheef put Wahoo up 38-24. A three-point shot from Crete at the end of the quarter cut the Wahoo lead to 38-27 at halftime.

An 8-2 run by Crete to open the third quarter cut the Warrior lead to five at 40-35. Two Colin Nadrchal free throws and a trey from Josh Langemeier pushed the Warrior lead back to 10 at 45-35. A minute later, another Langemeier trey put Wahoo up 11 at 50-39. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 52-44.

A B. Scheef bucket made it 54-44 early in the fourth. Crete countered with a trey and a free throw to make it 54-48 with five minutes left. An Iversen lay up and a B. Scheef bucket stretched the lead back to 10 at 58-48. A Jake Scheef steal and three-point play made it 61-49, and two Iversen free throws ended the Warrior scoring to make it 63-51.

“We were a little sluggish today. We were not as sharp as last night,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “That being said, it was still a good win over a solid Class B team on the road. Sometimes you have to find a way to win when you are not playing your best, and that was the case today.”

J. Scheef led Wahoo with 19 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and 4 steals. Iversen had 14 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 3 steals. B. Scheef had 14 points and a game-high 12 boards. Josh Langemeier had 8 points and 6 boards.

Wahoo improved to 10-1 and will host Platteview on Friday night. Crete drops to 3-5.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Syracuse Rockets in Capitol Conference action on Friday night in Syracuse 62-42.

Wahoo raced out to a 28-6 lead after one quarter and led 41-10 at halftime. The lead stretched to 50-11 midway through the third quarter, before reserves played the rest of the way.

“I thought we were really sharp tonight. Our ball movement was excellent and I thought our effort on the defensive end was really good.  There was a lot to like about how we played tonight. I thought Jake Ruzicka played his best game of the year for us. Colin Nadrchal really rebounded the ball well tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 17 points and 6 boards. Ben Scheef added 14 points, 6 boards, and 4 steals. Ruzicka added 10 points. Gavin Iversen had 10 points, and Nadrchal had a game-high 9 rebounds.

Wahoo forced 25 Syracuse turnovers and outrebounded the Rockets 38-29. Wahoo improved to 9-1, while Syracuse dropped to 5-6.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors 62-46 on Tuesday night.

Wahoo led 13-11 after one period. Wahoo stretched the lead to 29-18.  Back-to-back treys from Lincoln Lutheran cut Wahoo’s lead to 31-24 at halftime.

In the third quarter, a Jake Scheef steal and assist to Gavin Iversen made it 39-28. On the next possession, an Iversen steal and assist to J. Scheef stretched the lead to 41-28, and a Jake Ruzicka drive moments later put Wahoo up 43-28 late in the third quarter. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 45-34.  

A Josh Langemeier trey early in the fourth quarter put the lead at 48-34. Wahoo was able to stretch the lead out to as much as 23 at 62-39, before ending with the 62-46 win.

“It was a solid win for us,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Give Lincoln Lutheran credit for playing very hard. We just could not completely shake them until the fourth quarter.”

Ben Scheef led Wahoo with 21 points, 6 boards, and 4 steals. J. Scheef had 13 points. Iversen added 8 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists. Brandon Zetocka had 6 points on two treys.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Christian Crusaders 55-52 in the consolation game of the Holiday Tournament at Bishop Neumann on Saturday.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 16-10 lead after one quarter. Wahoo still trailed 20-15, when Jake Scheef hit a trey, and then Ben Scheef scored the next eight points for Wahoo to put the Warriors up 26-23. Wahoo went to the halftime with a 26-25 lead.

In the third quarter, four consecutive points from Gavin Iversen extended a three-point lead to seven at 35-28. A 12-2 run by Lincoln Christian to close the quarter gave the Crusaders a 40-37 lead after three quarters.

Christian scored to start the quarter to go up 42-37. Back-to-back treys from Iversen and Josh Langemeier put Wahoo back in front 43-42. The score was tied at 45 with 4:30 left, when a J. Scheef trey put Wahoo up for good at 48-45.

The Crusaders cut the lead to 48-47 a possession later. Wahoo still led 48-47 with 2:00 left, when a missed trey for the Warriors was followed by a spectacular tip-in from Iversen to extend the lead to 50-47. A J. Scheef free throw with 55 seconds left made it 51-47. Two Iversen free throws with 15 seconds left made it 53-49. A Jake Ruzicka lay up with four seconds left made it 55-49.

Christian hit a three at the buzzer to account for the final score of 55-52.

"This was a much-needed win for us coming off a drubbing last night. The kids showed a lot of resiliency today. This was a tough game against a very good team, that could have gone either way, but our kids found a way to get the job done. Gavin and Josh's back-to-back three's early in the fourth quarter were huge, as things were not going very well for us right before that. Gavin just made a tremendous hustle play on his tip in to put us up by three with 2:00 left. That was the play of the day!" said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

B. Scheef led the Warriors with 17 points and 9 boards. Iversen had 16 points, 4 boards, and 4 steals. J. Scheef added 13 points, 6 boards, and 5 steals.

Wahoo improves to 7-1, while Lincoln Christian falls to 5-2. Wahoo's next game will be Jan. 7 at Lincoln Lutheran.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Elkhorn South Storm 88-55 in the first round of the Holiday Tournament at Bishop Neumann.

Elkhorn South led 21-13 at te end of one quarter, and 44-26 at halftime. The Storm continued to extend the lead in the second half, and the Warriors were never able to threaten Elkhorn South.

"We got beat in every phase of the game tonight by an excellent Elkhorn South team," commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. "We got outworked and out-executed tonight. They exposed a number of things that we have to get better at."

The Storm were 10-22 from the three-point line, and 21-32 from two-point range. Elkhorn South forced 26 Wahoo turnovers.

Been Scheef led Wahoo with 30 points on 8-10 shooting from the floor and 14-16 from the freethrow line.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 78-56 on Friday night.

The Warriors jumped out to a 27-19 lead after one quarter, behind four treys from Josh Langemeier. Langemeier was 4-4 from the three-point line in the first quarter. Gavin Iversen also hit two treys, and Jake Ruzicka added one trey as the Warriors hit seven treys in the first quarter to jump out to the early lead.

The Warrior lead grew to 40-24 by halftime, and to 61-40 after three quarters.

“I thought we played really solidly tonight. Josh and Gavin got us off to a great start in the first quarter. We were able to steadily stretch out the lead, and prevent them from making a serious run at us. Josh played great for us, as did Gavin and Jake Ruzicka,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

Langemeier led Wahoo with 20 points on 6-7 shooting from three-point range, and added 6 boards and 6 assists. Ben Scheef added 19 points and 5 boards. Jake Scheef added 14 points and 5 boards. Iversen had 12 points, 5 boards, and 7 assists. Ruzicka added 7 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Wahoo outrebounded the bigger Pioneers 39-31, and were 10-21 from the three-point line as a team.

Wahoo heads into the Christmas break at 6-0, and will face Elkhorn South in the first round of the Holiday Tournament at Bishop Neumann.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Logan View Raiders 70-43 on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors jumped out to a 20-4 lead after one quarter behind 14 first quarter points from Jake Scheef.

The Warrior lead grew to 32-4 early in the second quarter. Wahoo led 36-13 at halftime, and cruised throughout the second half.

“After a really big win last night against Wayne, I was worried about a letdown today, but the kids did a nice job of staying focused, and we were able to work on some different things, and get a lot of kids some playing time,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

J. Scheef led the Warriors with 27 points on 9-14 shooting from the field, and 6-8 from the free throw line. Collin Nadrchal had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Nadrchal was 8-11 from the field. Ben Scheef added 9 points, 8 boards, 4 steals, and 5 assists. Jake Ruzicka had 6 boards, and 5 steals.

The Warriors outrebounded the Raiders 34-24, and forced 26 turnovers.

Wahoo improved to 5-0 and will travel to Fort Calhoun on Friday.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Wayne Blue Devils 52-43 on Friday night in a match up of preseason-ranked teams in Class C-1.

Ben Scheef scored the first nine points of the game for the Warriors. A Jake Scheef trey to end the first quarter put Wahoo up 12-7 after one quarter. In the second quarter, Wayne took a 21-20 lead late in the quarter. A Collin Nadrchal put-back at the buzzer put Wahoo back up 22-21 at halftime.  

The Blue Devils made a run early in the third quarter to take a 28-24 lead. A Josh Langemeier runner cut the lead to 28-26. A Blue Devil basket put Wayne back up four at 30-26. A B. Scheef trey followed by a Gavin Iversen basket gave the Warriors the lead at 31-30. Wahoo led 32-31 after three.

The Warriors were up 33-31 early in the fourth, when Langemeier hit back-to-back treys for Wahoo to stretch the lead to 39-33. Five consecutive points for Wayne cut the lead back to 39-38 with 3:30 left. A J. Scheef three-point play made it 42-38. Two Iversen free throws pushed the lead to 44-38.  

Following a Wayne trey, two J. Scheef free throws made it 46-41 with a minute left. An Iversen lay up, and two free throws a piece from B. Scheef and J. Scheef made the final 52-43.

“This was a great win for us over a quality team. It was a battle for four quarters and our kids did a great job of competing and finding a way to get it done in the fourth quarter,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Josh Langemeier’s back-to-back treys in the fourth quarter were huge. Ben Scheef played really well for us and got us started well early in the game.”

B. Scheef led Wahoo with 20 points and 9 boards. Langemeier had 12 points. J. Scheef added 12 points and 9 rebounds. Jake Ruzicka had 8 rebounds. Iversen had 7 points and 6 boards.  

The Warriors outrebounded the Blue Devils 39-21.

Wahoo improves to 4-0, while Wayne drops to 2-2.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the David City Scouts 82-46 on Tuesday night behind 22 points from senior Josh Langemeier.

The Warriors raced out to leads of 12-1, and 18-3, and the first quarter ended with Wahoo up 26-6. Wahoo extended the lead to 43-18 at halftime.

Langemeier had 22 points on 9-11 shooting from the field, including 4-5 from three-point range. Ben Scheef added 14 points, 8 boards, 4 steals, and 4 assists. Jake Scheef contributed 13 points. Gavin Iversen had 9 points and 5 boards. Jake Ruzicka had 6 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists.

Wahoo committed just 5 turnovers while forcing 17. They outrebounded the Scouts 37-29, and were 9-17 from three-point range.

“I thought our ball movement was really good tonight. We were very unselfish with the ball,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Josh Langemeier really shot the ball well. He has really been steady and consistent the first three games. We need his perimeter shooting. I thought Ben Scheef did a lot of things well for us tonight.”

The Warriors improved to 3-0 and will face the Wayne Blue Devils on Friday night at home in a match up of 3-0 teams.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Seward Bluejays 70-59 on Saturday night behind junior Jake Scheef’s 30 points.

Wahoo jumped out to a 14-12 lead after one quarter, as J. Scheef had nine first quarter points, and Gavin Iversen had five.

The Warriors were able to extend the lead throughout the second quarter behind six points from freshmen Jake Ruzicka, to take a 37-26 lead at halftime.

Three Ben Scheef free throws and a Ruzicka basket gave the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 42-26 early in the third quarter. Seward would answer with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 42-34. Wahoo lead 44-36 after three.

The Warriors still led by eight at 46-38 early in the fourth. Two consecutive three point plays and two free throws from J. Scheef put Wahoo on top 54-38 midway through the fourth quarter.  

Wahoo was 14-19 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, including 11-12 from the line from J. Scheef, to take home the win, 70-59.

“We have some mental errors that we need to get corrected, but I like our effort. We are happy to go 2-0 on this opening weekend against two solid Class B opponents. Jake Scheef had a great night offensively for us. Jake Ruzicka has played really well. For a frosh to give us eight points and ten boards is outstanding! Josh Langemeier and Gavin Iversen had good nights for us as well,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.

J. Scheef led Wahoo with 30 points, five boards, and five steals. Iversen added 11 points, six boards, and three assists. B. Scheef had ten points and six boards. Ruzicka had eight points and ten boards, and Langemeier had eight points and six boards.

The Warriors outrebounded the Bluejays 36-25, and were 33-42 from the free throw line.

Wahoo improves to 2-0 and will travel to David City on Tuesday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Bennington Badgers 55-52 in the opening game of the season on Thursday night.

Bennington led 11-10 after one quarter. The Badgers lead grew to 7 at 23-16 midway through the second quarter. A Jake Scheef block and lay up, followed by a Josh Langemeier trey cut the lead to 23-21.

After a Bennington trey, Jake Ruzicka answered with a trey from the corner to cut the lead to two. A Ben Scheef basket to close the half cut the Badger lead to 32-29 at halftime.

In the third quarter, a J. Scheef basket, and a Langemeier lay up gave Wahoo its first lead since early in the game at 33-32. A B. Scheef free throw at the end of the third put Wahoo up 43-42 after three.

The Warriors trailed 50-47 with 4:00 to play. J. Scheef’s basket followed by his trey from the corner put Wahoo up 52-50 with 2:30 left. Ruzicka added a free throw to push the lead to 53-50 with 1:20 left.  

The Badgers scored with 40 seconds left to cut the lead to 53-52. Following a Warrior turnover, the Badgers missed a trey with 15 seconds left. J. Scheef got the rebound, was fouled and made both free throws with ten seconds left to make it 55-52.  

The Badgers then missed a trey with two seconds left, and the Warriors escaped with the win.

“It was a battle tonight. It was a good high school game that could have gone either way,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I was proud of our kids for finding a way to get it done down the stretch. Jake really hit some big shots for us and did a great job on the glass. Gavin Iversen was really tough out top on our 1-3-1 and gave us seven steals. Josh Langemeier played well, and Jake Ruzicka gave us some great minutes off the bench. He played very well in his first varsity game as a freshman.”

The Warriors were outrebounded 39-27, but forced 18 Badger turnovers while committing just 10.  

J. Scheef led Wahoo with 25 points, 9 boards, and 4 steals. Josh Langemeier had 11 points. Ben Scheef had 7 points and 6 boards. Gavin Iversen added 6 points, 4 assists and 7 steals.

The Warriors travel to Seward on Saturday afternoon to take on the Bluejays!
