19-6 Wahoo captures a 2015 State Tourney wildcard!
Wahoo earned a wildcard spot in the 2015 State Boys Basketball State Championship, which was played March 12-14 in Lincoln. Wahoo was the #7 seed, and faced #2 Winnebago in Game 1 (Thurs., Mar. 12 at 9:00 a.m. at the Sports Center). Winnebago overpowered Wahoo to take the 66-50 victory, ending Wahoo's season at 19-7. They are long, athletic, and play very hard. I am very proud of our kids and the season that they had. They can hold their heads up on a terrific year,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 19 points. Jake Ruzicka and Dalton Lamprecht added 8 points apiece. Gavin Iversen had 7 points, 5 boards, 6 steals, and 4 assists.
Wahoo was just 3-20 from the three-point line, while Winnebago was 13-25.
Wahoo ended their season at 19-7, while Winnebago swept the tournament to take the Class C-1 State Championship.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 68-51 in the Subdistrict Finals on Thursday night at Elkhorn South.
The game was close early on. Neumann took a 19-13 lead after one quarter and increased the lead to 41-26 at halftime. Jaxon Simons was on fire for Neumann in the first half, posting 28 points for the Cavaliers.
Neumann extended the lead to 53-34 after three quarters. The Warriors kept battling and cut the lead to 15 at 56-41, but that would be as close as Wahoo could get in the fourth quarter.
Jaxon Simons ended up with 35 points for Neumann.
“I was proud of our kids. They battled to the very end. Jaxon Simons just had an incredible night for Neumann, which was too much for us to overcome,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Jake Ruzicka played really well for us, as did Dalton Lamprecht. I was proud of Jake Scheef for giving it everything he had with his leg injury.”
Ruzicka led the Warriors with 20 points on 8-16 shooting from the field to go with 7 rebounds. Lamprecht had 12 points, 4 boards, and 4 steals. Scheef added 10 points, and Gavin Iversen had 5 assists.
Neumann was 10-23 from three point range, while the Warriors were just 3-15.
Wahoo falls to 19-6, while Neumann improves to 22-3. The Warriors still have an outside chance at a wildcard, but will need GICC, Winnebago, and Falls City to win their District Finals on Monday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles 55-48 in the second round of subdistrict action at Elkhorn South.
The Warriors led 11-6 after one quarter of play. Wahoo opened up the lead in the second quarter and built a lead of 25-11. They went to halftime up 30-18.
The Eagles made a run in the third quarter, just as they did in this season’s two previous meetings. A 7-2 run to open the third cut the Warrior lead to 32-25. The Warrior lead was just five at 39-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
Arlington cut the Warrior lead to three at 39-36 early in the fourth. The Warriors’ Jake Scheef went down with an ankle injury with 7:19 left in the game and did not return. Wahoo’s Jake Ruzicka stepped up big when Scheef went down. Ruzicka hit a trey to push the lead to 42-36.
After an Arlington basket made it 42-38, Ruzicka converted a three-point play to make it 45-38. Following another Eagle basket that made it 45-41, Ruzicka converted another three-point play to make it 48-41. Following an Eagle miss, Ruzicka converted two free throws to make it 50-41, topping off 11 straight points.
The Eagles scored the next five points to make it 50-46 with 1:50 left. Mitchell McGill was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to put Wahoo up 51-46. Moments later McGill hit another free throw to make it 52-46. A Dylan Egr lay up late sealed the Warrior win and the Warriors escaped with the 55-48 win.
“I was very proud of our kids. We faced a lot of adversity tonight, with some serious foul trouble in the first half, and then with losing Jake, but our kids really fought through it,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Jake Ruzicka came up huge in the fourth quarter for us. Mitchell McGill gave us some great minutes off of the bench, and Dylan Egr did as well.”
Ruzicka led the Warriors with 13 points. Scheef added 12 points and 5 steals. Dalton Lamprecht had 8 points, and Cole Peterson and Gavin Iversen chipped in with 6 a piece. Iversen also added 7 assists.
Arlington out-rebounded Wahoo 35-20. Arlington’s 6’8” center Trevor Koger had 16 points and 23 rebounds. The Eagles were just 14-26 from the free throw line, while Wahoo was 24-36, including Ruzicka’s 6-6, and Iversen’s 6-8.
Wahoo improves to 19-5 and will face Bishop Neumann on Thursday night in the subdistrict final. Arlington ends its season 16-7, with three of those loses coming to Wahoo.

The Warriors led 20-4 after one quarter, and 42-13 at halftime, and were never threatened by Schuyler.
“We played a real nice first half. We executed well and our defensive intensity was good. Jake Ruzicka had a really nice game for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 25 points on 9-13 shooting from the field, and 4 steals. Ruzicka added 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the field to go with 7 boards and 7 assists. Dalton Lamprecht had 12 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor. Gavin Iversen had 7 points and 5 assists. Lincoln Belitz had 7 rebounds.
The Warriors outrebounded Schuyler 34-21.
Wahoo improved to 18-5, while Schuyler drops to 2-20. The Warriors will face Arlington on Tuesday night in the first round of sub-districts at Elkhorn South.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays 70-62 on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors led 13-9 after one quarter. The Bluejays had a big second quarter, outscoring Wahoo 25-15 to take a 34-28 half-time lead.
Wahoo went on an 8-2 run to start the third quarter and tied the game up at 36. The Warriors could never take the lead, though, and Ashland extended the lead to 50-43 after three quarters.
The Warriors cut the lead to 54-51 early in the fourth, but the Bluejays were 12-16 from the line in the fourth quarter to seal the upset.
“Ashland played really well tonight. They shot the ball well, they played harder than we did, and Tyler Craven had an incredible game for them. They took it to us tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Ashland was 8-16 from three-point range, and outrebounded Wahoo 33-23. Tyler Craven led Ashland with 32 points.
Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 25 points and 5 steals. Gavin Iversen had 13 points, 6 steals, and 6 assists. Jake Ruzicka added 12 points and 5 boards. Dalton Lamprecht added 7 boards, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus the Lakeview Vikings 66-43 on Friday night in Columbus.
The Warriors led 17-9 after one quarter and increased the lead to 35-20 at halftime. The Warriors continued to open up the lead in the second half and led 46-25 at the end of three. The lead grew to as much as 56-30 before reserves finished out the game for the 66-43 win.
“I did not think that it was one of our best efforts tonight, but we were able to gradually stretch the lead out and get the job done,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I thought Gavin Iversen played well for us tonight, and Mitchell McGill gave us some great minutes off the bench.”
Jake Scheef led the Warriors with 27 points and 7 boards. Iversen added 13 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists. Lincoln Belitz scored 7 points and had 5 boards. Collin Nadrchal contributed 6 points.

A Tuesday night match up in Columbus featured the #1-rated team in the Omaha World-Herald, Columbus Scotus, vs. the #1-rated team in the Lincoln Journal-Star, Wahoo. The Shamrocks won the battle 63-54.
The Shamrocks took control early and jumped to a 19-9 lead after one quarter. A deep Grant Lahm trey at the buzzer put Scotus up 31-19 at the break.
Scotus extended the lead to as much as 36-21, before the Warriors started chipping away. The Warriors cut the lead to nine by the end of the third quarter at 48-39.
Three consecutive baskets from Jake Scheef cut the Shamrock lead to 52-47 with 4:00 minutes to play. A Lahm trey put Scotus up 55-47. A Jake Ruzicka basket made it 55-49, and moments later a Gavin Iversen trey cut the lead to three at 55-52.
On the ensuing possession, the Shamrocks misfired on two straight three-point attempts, but got the offensive rebound of each of those. A third three-point attempt of the possession, by Lahm, did not miss, and the Shamrocks led 58-52. Scotus would then hit 5-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I was proud of our kids’ efforts and comeback in the second half. If we could have secured the rebound once we cut it to three, then we have a shot, but our failure to do so was huge, and Lahm made us pay by once again hitting a huge trey. He is a terrific player.”
Lahm led Scotus with 33 points on six treys.
Scheef led Wahoo with 28 points on 13-23 shooting from the field, and 6 boards. Dalton Lamprecht added 8 points, 5 boards, and 4 steals. Collin Nadrchal had 6 points and 5 boards. Iversen added 5 boards, 5 steals and 6 assists.
The Warriors shot just 3 free throws, compared to 23 for Scotus. Scotus was 9-22 from the three-point line, while Wahoo was 3-13. The Warriors did outrebound the Shamrocks 29-21.
Wahoo fell to 16-4 and will travel to Lakeview on Friday night. Columbus Scotus improved to 16-3.

In a Saturday night match up of two highly rated C-1 teams, the #4-ranked Wahoo Warriors defeated the #2-ranked Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 76-67!
Jake Scheef led the Warriors with a career-high 41 points.
Wahoo got off to a great start, as they raced to an early 10-0 lead. Collin Nadrchal scored four of those first 10 points, as did Jake Scheef. Dalton Lamprecht had the other two. The quarter ended with Wahoo up 23-11.
Wahoo was able to maintain the lead throughout the second quarter, and the score at half was 34-24.
Midway through the third quarter, GICC cut the lead to 38-37. Scheef answered with back-to-back treys to push the lead to 44-39. Two Lincoln Belitz free throws pushed the lead to 46-39. On the next possession, Scheef was fouled on a three-point shot, and converted all three free throws to push the lead back to 10 at 49-39. Back-to-back Jake Ruzicka baskets closed out the third quarter to put the Warriors up 55-41.
A Scheef basket to start the fourth quarter gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the game at 57-41. Though the Warriors struggled in the fourth quarter with the GICC press, the Crusaders were able to get no closer than eight the rest of the way, and Wahoo was able to knock down enough free throws to close out the win.
“It was a great win for us over a great team. I was just really proud of our kids. We got off to a great start. We played with great energy, especially early. When they made their run in the third quarter, our kids showed great poise in answering the run and taking control of the game again. Collin Nadrchal played really hard and well for us tonight, and Jake Scheef had a great night offensively. It was a great team win,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Scheef had 41 points on 14-22 shooting from the field, including 4-6 from three-point range, and 9-10 from the line, to go with 6 boards, and 4 steals. Ruzicka had 12 points and 5 boards. Gavin Iversen had 7 boards, and 5 assists. Nadrchal had 6 points and 6 boards. Lamprecht had 5 points and 5 boards, and Belitz had 5 points on 5-6 shooting from the line and 4 boards.
The Warriors outrebounded the Crusaders 34-27.
Wahoo improved to 16-3, while GICC drops to 17-4. The Warriors will travel to Columbus Scotus on Tuesday to take on the #3-rated Shamrocks.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles 66-53 in a home contest on Friday night.
The Warriors led 16-12 after one quarter and 32-28 at halftime. A Cole Peterson trey put Wahoo up eight at 40-32. The Warriors lead was still 42-34, when the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to take a 43-42 lead. Jake Scheef answered with a trey to put Wahoo up 45-43, at the end of the third quarter.
Arlington tied the game at 45 to open the fourth quarter. Gavin Iversen then nailed a three to put Wahoo up 48-45. After an Eagle free throw, Jake Ruzicka hit a trey to put Wahoo up 51-46. Moments later, another Scheef trey put Wahoo up 54-46, and the Warriors were able to knock down free throws down the stretch to maintain the lead and escape with the 66-53 win.
Scheef was 5-5 from the line in the fourth quarter, and Ruzicka was 4-5 from the line in the fourth.
“The game was almost a repeat of our game with them a week ago,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Both times, we scratched out a lead, only to watch Arlington erase the lead with big runs in the third quarter. Both times, though, we answered right away with runs of our own to take back control of the game. Jake Scheef, Gavin Iversen, and Jake Ruzicka all made huge three’s late in the third and early in the fourth to allow us to take the lead back. It was a good win for us over a good team.”
Scheef led the Warriors with 31 points on 4-8 shooting from behind the arc, and 5 boards. Ruzicka had 14 points on 2-3 shooting from behind the arc, to go with 9 rebounds. Iversen had 8 assists to go with 6 points. Peterson had 6 points on 2-3 shooting from three-point range. Collin Nadrchal had 5 points and 4 boards.
Wahoo was 9-16 from three-point range, and forced 17 Eagle turnovers while committing just 7 turnovers.
Wahoo improved to 15-3, while Arlington drops to 13-6. The Warriors will face highly ranked GICC on Saturday in the final home game of the season.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Platteview Trojans 48-38 in the Capitol Conference Finals on Saturday night at Platteview to claim their 5th consecutive Capitol Conference title!
The Warriors led 10-6 after one quarter. The score was tied at 12 with four minutes to play in the half, when the Warriors went on a run. A Jake Scheef trey put the Warriors up by three. A Gavin Iversen bucket pushed the lead to five. A Scheef bucket was followed by two Iversen free throws and a putback by Lincoln Belitz, which completed an 11-0 run to put Wahoo up 23-12.
The half ended with Wahoo up 23-14.
The Warriors led 32-25 after three quarters. Jake Ruzicka scored six consecutive points for the Warriors late in the third and early in the fourth. Platteview would cut the lead to five twice, the last time at 36-31, with five minutes left. An Iversen bucket made it 38-31, and two Scheef free throws and bucket made it 42-31, and the Warriors went on to the 48-38 win.
“I am really proud of our kids. I don’t think that either team played great. Neither team shot it very well, but our kids battled and found a way to beat a team that had beat us two weeks earlier,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Scheef led Wahoo with 22 points and 4 steals. Ruzicka had 12 points and 10 boards. Iversen had 12 points, 7 boards, and 5 steals. Dalton Lamprecht added 5 boards.
Wahoo improved to 14-3, while Platteview fell to 10-7.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles in the Capitol Conference Semifinals on Thursday night in Wahoo, 65-53.
The Warriors led 24-18 after one quarter, and 37-30 at halftime.
In the third quarter, a Collin Nadrchal lay up extended the Warrior lead to 10 at 42-32. Arlington would then go on an 11-0 run to take its only lead of the game at 43-42.
Four straight points, though, from Jake Ruzicka on a jumper and an offensive rebound, followed by a Scheef trey, put Wahoo back on top at 49-43 to end the third quarter. Another Scheef trey to start the fourth quarter extended the lead to 52-43, and the Eagles could not get closer then eight the rest of the way.
Wahoo made 8-11 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
“I thought it was a real nice win for us,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Arlington has a good team. When they made their 11-0 run to take the lead late in the third quarter, our kids did not panic, and immediately made some plays to take control of the game again. I really liked our effort on the glass tonight. To out-rebound them by 10, when they have a 6’8” kid, is really a credit to our kids.”
Scheef led the way with 26 points and 10 boards. Gavin Iversen contributed 15 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists. Jake Ruzicka added 11 points and 4 boards. Lincoln Belitz and Nadrchal each added 5 boards.
Wahoo outrebounded Arlington 32-22, and committed just 8 turnovers. Wahoo was 7-12 (58.3%) from the three-point line, and was 16-22 (72.7%) from the free throw line.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Norfolk Catholic Knights 65-59 on Friday night in Wahoo. The Warriors overcame an eight-point deficit with six minutes left to claim the victory!
Wahoo jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but a 35-foot shot at the buzzer put the Knights up 11-9 after one quarter.
Wahoo opened up a 20-14 lead midway through the second period, but the Knights used a 12-2 run to take a 26-22 lead, and went to the locker room up 31-27.
The Knights still led 41-38 after three quarters. The lead grew to 46-38 with six minutes to play, when the Warriors started to rally.
A three-point play and two free throws from Jake Scheef cut the Knight lead to 48-43. A Lincoln Belitz steal and assist to Scheef made it 48-45. A minute later, the Knights led 50-45, when Scheef answered with a trey to make it 50-48. Moments later, a Jake Ruzicka free throw cut the lead to 51-49.
The Knights still led 55-51, but a Gavin Iversen bucket, and a Scheef three-pointer gave the Warriors their first lead of the second half with two minutes to play at 56-55. The Knights answered to go back up 57-56, but Scheef answered with a bucket to put Wahoo up 58-57 with 1:20 left.
A Norfolk Catholic bucket put the Knights up 59-58 with 1:08 left. Two Ruzicka free throws gave the Warriors the lead at 60-59 with 40 seconds left. Moments later a Dalton Lamprecht steal and two free throws put Wahoo up 62-59 with 34 seconds left. Following a missed Knights shot, Iversen knocked down two free throws to clinch the win for the Warriors, and give Wahoo an exciting 65-59 win.
Wahoo outscored the Knights 27-18 in the fourth quarter. Scheef scored 18 fourth quarter points for the Warriors, and Wahoo as a team was 14-19 from the line in the fourth quarter.
“I thought it was a really exciting high school basketball game. The lead went back and forth in the fourth quarter several times. Our kids really competed in the fourth quarter and found a way to get it done, when it was not looking good for us. Every single player on the floor for us in the fourth quarter made a huge play at some point, to help get the game turned around for us. Norfolk Catholic is a strong, athletic team, and it was a really nice win for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Scheef had a double-double for the Warriors with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Ruzicka had 12 points and 9 boards. Iversen and Lamprecht each added 10 points and 5 boards. Collin Nadrchal contributed 6 boards.
Wahoo forced 16 Norfolk Catholic turnovers, while committing just 10 themselves.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the D.C. West Falcons 82-52 on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo.
The Warriors led 16-10 after one quarter, but increased the lead to 41-21 by halftime. The Warriors scored 32 third quarter points to stretch the lead to 73-39 after three. Reserves finished out the fourth quarter.
“After a really bad night Friday night at Platteview, I was really pleased with how we played tonight,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Our effort was much, much better. Our offensive execution and shot selection were much improved from last night as well. I am glad that we were able to turn around and play right away and not have to think about Friday night’s game for too long.”
Jake Scheef led the Warriors with 27 points, 6 boards, 4 assists and 4 steals. Jake Ruzicka added 20 points. Gavin Iversen had 11 points, 7 assists and 5 steals.
The Warriors forced 25 D.C. West turnovers.

The Trojans jumped out to a big lead of 23-11 after one quarter, and pretty much maintained that lead the whole way. Platteview led 37-25 at halftime and 55-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
“I have to say that this is one of the most disappointing games that we have been a part of in a long time, from the standpoint that the biggest single difference between our two teams tonight was effort. They came out and outworked us from beginning to end. We were just a bad team tonight, and they played with great energy and passion,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
The Warriors shot 30.5% from the field, while Platteview shot 59.1%.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Crete Cardinals 54-51 on Saturday afternoon in Wahoo.
Crete led 14-11 after one quarter. The Cardinals extended their lead to 28-21 late in the half. Two free throws from Lincoln Belitz, a trey from Jake Ruzicka, and a free throw from Dalton Lamprecht closed the Cardinal lead to 29-28 at the half.
The Warriors scored the first four points of the second half on baskets from Lamprecht and Jake Scheef to go up 32-29. The Cardinals then scored the next eight points to go up 37-32. A Scheef trey with 30 seconds left in the third capped an 8-2 run to put Wahoo up 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
A Cole Peterson trey extended the Warrior lead to 43-39 a minute into the fourth quarter. After the Cardinals tied the game at 43, Peterson hit another trey to put Wahoo up 46-43. On the next Warrior possession, Scheef hit a trey to make it 49-43. The Cardinals scored the next four points to make it 49-47.
A Scheef basket made it 51-47 with two minutes left. A Crete field goal cut the lead to 51-49. Two Scheef free throws with 30 seconds left made it 53-49. Two Crete free throws made it 53-51.
After two missed free throws from the Warriors, Crete got an open look at a trey with 7 seconds left, but it rimmed out. Scheef secured the rebound and was fouled with 2.2 seconds left. Scheef hit 1 of 2 free throws, and a ¾ shot at the buzzer was off the mark for the Cardinals, allowing the Warriors to escape with the 54-51 win.
“It was a great win for us. We could have made things easier for us by knocking down some free throws at the end. McGinnis got a great look at a three in the final seconds, and is a great shooter. We were fortunate that did not go down,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I was proud of our kids for the way that they competed against a very good Crete team. It was a good high school game. Cole Peterson hit a couple of huge treys for us in the fourth quarter, and I thought Jake Scheef had a really good game.”
Scheef led the Warriors with 24 points, 6 boards, and 6 steals. Ruzicka added 12 points. Peterson had 9 points on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc. Gavin Iversen had a game-high 8 assists.
The Warriors were 9-16 from behind the arc.
Wahoo improved to 8-2, while Crete fell to 5-4. The Warriors will next travel to Platteview on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Syracuse Rockets in Capitol Conference action on Friday night, 72-47.
The Warriors jumped out to a 22-5 lead after one quarter. The lead stretched to 32-7 midway through the second quarter. The Warriors went to the break up 40-19.
Wahoo led 58-32 after three quarters, and led by as much as 30 in the fourth quarter at 69-39, before finishing up the 72-47 win.
“It was a good win. Gavin Iversen had another huge night in the assist department with 10 assists, after having 11 on Tuesday night. Dalton Lamprecht played really well for us, as did Jake Ruzicka and Jake Scheef. Ruzicka did a great job on the glass tonight. Cole Peterson continues to shoot the ball well from three-point range, and Josh Abbott and Lincoln Belitz have been really solid off the bench,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Ruzicka had a season-high 13 rebounds to go with 17 points. Iversen had a game-high 10 assists to go with 4 steals and 4 boards. Lamprecht had 14 points, which included two impressive dunks, 8 boards and 5 steals. Scheef had 20 points and 6 boards. Peterson was 3-6 from three-point range for 9 points. Belitz added 5 boards and 5 assists.
The Warriors improved to 7-2 and will take on a very good Crete Cardinals team today.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors 83-61 on Tuesday night in Wahoo.
The game was close early. Lincoln Lutheran led by one after the first quarter, 18-17. Wahoo was able to make a run midway through the second quarter. Three-point shots from Jake Scheef and Gavin Iversen, and field goals from Dalton Lamprecht and Scheef, put Wahoo up 35-24. Wahoo still led 39-28, before Lutheran closed the half with a 7-0 run to cut Wahoo’s lead to 39-35 at halftime.
The third quarter would see Wahoo break the game open. A 15-3 run to open the third quarter, which included baskets from Scheef, Lincoln Belitz, and Cole Peterson put Wahoo up 54-38. The third quarter would close with Wahoo up 65-47, and Lutheran did not threaten after that.
“Offensively, we shot it well, and we did a lot of good thing on the offensive end,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We have to get much better in our half court defense and we have to get a lot tougher rebounding the ball.”
Iversen had a career-high 11 assists to go with 15 points, 5 boards, and 5 steals. Scheef had a season-high 29 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the arc, to go with 4 steals and 5 assists. Jake Ruzicka added 13 points, 7 boards, and 6 assists. Peterson and Lamprecht each added 10 points a piece.
Wahoo was 10-20 from three-point range and forced 21 Lincoln Lutheran turnovers, but were outrebounded 31-26.
Wahoo improves to 6-2, and will host Capitol Conference foe Syracuse on Friday night. Lincoln Lutheran drops to 6-6.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 65-54 in the finals of the Holiday Tournament.
Neumann jumped out to a 22-15 lead after one quarter. The Warriors battled back to tie the score at 27 at the break. A Neumann trey at the end of the third quarter put the Cavaliers up 44-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
A Jake Ruzicka three-point play tied the game up at 49 with 4:30 to play. From that point on, Neumann would make 18 consecutive free throws to pull away for the 65-54 win.
“Neumann shot the ball extremely well. 11-21 for them from 3 and 4-25 for us from 3 is pretty hard to overcome. In spite of that, we were still tied in the last 4:30 of the game, but just did not make the plays that we needed to down the stretch. Hopefully we will learn and grow from this game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
The Warriors fell to 5-2 and will host Lincoln Lutheran at home next Tuesday.

The Warriors used a big first quarter to take control of the game. Wahoo led 17-1 after one quarter, behind 8 first quarter points from Jake Scheef, and 7 from Jake Ruzicka.
Wahoo saw the lead cut to 25-13 at halftime, but used the third quarter to take control back of the game. Wahoo led 44-25 after three, and increased the lead to 50-25 with six minutes left in the game.
“Lincoln Christian was coming off of a huge win over Grand Island Central Catholic right before the break, so we were very worried about them. I thought we played well on the defensive end, we rebounded it much better tonight, and Jake Ruzicka had a great game for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Ruzicka scored a game-high 23 points on 10-15 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from behind the arc, and had 4 boards, 3 blocks and 3 steals. Scheef added 16 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists. Dalton Lamprecht contributed 6 points and 7 boards, and Gavin Iversen had 6 boards, 5 steals, and 7 assists.
Wahoo outrebounded Lincoln Christian 31-15.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 54-50 in Capitol Conference action on Friday night in Wahoo.
The Warriors jumped out to a 15-5 lead after one quarter behind 6 points a piece from Jake Ruzicka and Jake Scheef.
Fort Calhoun stormed back to cut the lead to one at 25-24 at halftime.
The Pioneers scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take a 32-25 lead. Wahoo then made a run, capped by a Gavin Iversen trey to tie it up at 33. The quarter ended with Calhoun up 37-34.
The Warriors then scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter. Baskets from Scheef and Dalton Lamprecht were followed by two free throws a piece from Ruzicka and Scheef. A Ruzicka jumper and a Scheef lay up put Wahoo up 46-37 with three minutes left to play.
From there, the Warriors would survive a big comeback from the Pioneers. Following a Calhoun free throw, Josh Abbott hit two free throws to give the Warriors a 10-point lead at 48-38. Following back-to-back Pioneer buckets, Iversen hit one free throw to put Wahoo up 49-42 with 1:30 left. A Calhoun trey made it 49-45.
Ruzicka then hit one of two free throws to make it 50-45. The Pioneers then banked in a trey with 45 seconds left to cut the lead to 50-48. A Ruzicka free throw made it 51-48 with 42 seconds left. Wahoo then survived two missed treys and a traveling call on Calhoun. Ruzicka was fouled again with 11 seconds left, and converted both free throws to seal the win for the Warriors.
“We survived. That is how to best describe tonight. We battled through being short handed tonight and some serious foul trouble, and found a way to get the win. Jake Ruzicka had a huge night for us tonight and made some very big free throws down the stretch. We got destroyed on the glass, and that is something we have to get a lot better at,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Fort Calhoun outrebounded Wahoo 35-19. The Warriors forced 20 Calhoun turnovers though, while committing just 11.
Ruzicka led Wahoo with 17 points on 9-11 free throw shooting, 5 boards, and 5 steals. Scheef had 16 points and 5 boards. Lamprecht added 10 points on 4-4 shooting from the field. Iversen chipped in 8 points, 5 steals, and 6 assists.
Wahoo improved to 4-1 and will play next in the Holiday Tournament on the 29th against Lincoln Christian. Fort Calhoun falls to 5-1.

Jake Scheef led Wahoo with 21 points, 6 boards, 7 steals and 4 assists in just 14 minutes of action. Jake Ruzicka had 10 points. Cole Peterson had 9 points on 3-3 shooting from three-point range. Peterson was 6-6 from three-point range this weekend. Gavin Iversen had 9 points and 5 assists. Brendan Lacey added 8 points off of the bench, and Dalton Lamprecht contributed 6 rebounds.
The Warriors were 10-11 from the free throw line, and 8-15 from three-point range. Wahoo outrebounded Logan View 30-15.

The Wahoo Warriors used a big second quarter to pull away from the Wayne Blue Devils and cruise to the 61-28 win.
Wahoo led 11-5 after a sluggish first quarter, but outscored Wayne 24-11 in the second quarter to take a 35-16 halftime lead.
The Warriors extended the lead to 51-22 after three quarters.
“It was a nice win over a team that is traditionally one of the top teams in Class C-1. They have a returning second team all state player that we were able to hold down to just 13 points, and did not let anybody else really hurt us,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I thought defensively, we were tough out front, and Dalton Lamprecht has a lot to do with that. He plays really hard out top, and gives us good length. Gavin Iversen had a really nice game for us as well.”

The Wahoo Warriors used a big fourth quarter run to wipe out a ten-point deficit, and came away with a 63-58 win over the Seward Bluejays in the home opener for the Warriors.
Wahoo jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead after a Dalton Lamprecht basket. The Bluejays would score on four consecutive possessions to cut the lead to 21-20. A Gavin Iversen jumper closed the quarter with Wahoo up 23-20.
The Warriors still led 30-27 after two Jake Scheef free throws. Seward then went on a run, scoring 12 consecutive points on their next 6 possessions to take a 39-30 lead late in the half. Two more Scheef free throws cut the lead to 39-32 at the half.
Wahoo scored the first 5 points of the third quarter. A Jake Ruzicka free throw cut the lead to 41-39. Seward would then go on a 9-2 run to make it 50-41.
Seward’s lead would grow to 54-44 at the end of the third quarter. Seward still led 56-49. A Ruzicka jumper, two Scheef free throws, and a Collin Nadrchal free throw cut the lead to 56-54. The Seward lead was 58-54 with 1:50 left.
The Bluejays would not score again. A Lamprecht lay up cut the lead to 58-56 with 1:37 left. A Lamprecht free throw made it 58-57. Two Ruzicka free throws with 1:18 left put the Warriors up 59-58. Following a Bluejay missed three, Scheef made two free throws to make it 61-58 with 45 seconds left. The Bluejays missed a three and turned it over with 6 seconds left. Lamprecht’s lay up at the buzzer completed the 9-0 run and gave the Warriors the 63-58 win.
“I was proud of the fight that our kids showed in the fourth quarter. It was not looking good for us, but our kids kept battling and found a way to get it done down the stretch against a very athletic team,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We have a lot of things that we have to improve on, but we are happy to not open the season 0-2. We made some big free throws in the final 90 seconds to get us the win.”
Scheef led Wahoo with 22 points on 12-13 shooting from the line, along with a team-high 5 rebounds, 6 steals, and 6 assists. Ruzicka added 15 points on 5-8 shooting from the field, and 3-4 from the line, and 5 boards. Lamprecht had 11 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor.
The Bluejays were 8-17 from three-point range, but just 8-21 from the free throw line. The Warriors were 18-23 from the free throw line.
The Warriors will travel to Wayne on Friday and Logan View on Saturday.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bennington Badgers 64-57 in the opening game of the season on Thursday night.
Bennington led 10-8 after one quarter. The Badgers increased the lead to 25-20 late in the second quarter. A three-point play from Jake Scheef followed by a steal and lay up from Gavin Iversen tied the game up at the half at 25.
The third quarter stayed close. After a Warrior steal and Dalton Lamprecht dunk, Wahoo led 34-30. An Iversen jumper at the end of the period put Wahoo up 46-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Wahoo increased the lead to 5 early in the fourth quarter at 51-46, following an Iversen trey and a Jake Ruzicka jumper. After a Ruzicka lay up, Wahoo still led 55-51. Back-to-back treys by the Badgers, though, put Bennington up 57-55. Two Lamprecht free throws tied the game with 2:30 left at 57, but the Warriors would miss shots on their final 5 possessions, and Bennington would go on to the 64-57 win.
“I thought it was a really good high school game. We put ourselves in great position midway through the fourth quarter, but we were unable to get the stops that we needed down the stretch,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We got a little tired, and did not get to the shooters soon enough. Give Bennington credit. They knocked down 11 treys and outrebounded us by 7, which was the difference.”
Scheef led Wahoo with 17 points., 4 steals, and 4 assists. Iversen had 16 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. Collin Nadrchal added 12 points.
The Warriors will host Seward on Saturday afternoon.
