The 2016 Boys Basketball Subdistrict C1-5 was played Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, February 22, 23, and 25 at Roncalli Catholic High School in Omaha. The #2-seeded Wahoo Warriors faced #3 Boys Town in Game 3 on Tues., Feb. 23, at 7:15 p.m. The game went down to the wire, but in the end Boys Town defeated the Warriors 71-69. The Wahoo Warriors season was ended by the Boys Town Cowboys 71-69 on Tuesday night in Subdistrict Semifinal action at Omaha Roncalli. The Cowboys also ended Wahoo’s 12-game winning streak.
One of Boys Town’s starting guards, Larry McBride, passed away on Monday night from natural causes, making this an emotional night for the Cowboys.
Boys Town jumped out to an 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter. Back-to-back treys from Dylan Egr and Billy Hancock cut the lead to 11-10. The Warriors took their first lead at 15-14 on a second Hancock trey. The first quarter ended with the game tied at 17.
In the second quarter, the Warriors started to take control. They led 29-22 after a Egr trey. A Jake Ruzicka free throw made it 30-22. Five Warrior turnovers though, in the last three minutes of the second quarter, allowed Boys Town to cut the lead to 34-32 at halftime.
The third quarter was tight and the lead changed hands several times. The third quarter ended tied at 49.
The Warriors took their last lead of the game at 50-49 on a Mitchell McGill free throw. The Cowboys would then take control and lead by as much as 8 at 61-53 with 2:00 minutes left.
Wahoo would then mount a late game rally. Two Brendan Lacey free throws cut the lead to 61-55. Two more Hancock free throws made it 61-57 with 1:36 left.
Moments later a Lacey bucket cut the lead to 2 at 61-59. Two Boys Town baskets pushed the lead back to 65-59. Two Egr free throws with 33 seconds left made it 65-61. A Boys Town free throw made it 66-61. A Ruzicka bucket cut the lead to 66-63 with 24 seconds left. A breakaway lay up made it 68-63. A Lacey basket made it 68-65 with 18 seconds left.
A Boys Town breakaway lay up made it 70-65, but a Ruzicka trey cut the lead to 70-68. A Boys Town free throw with 3.8 seconds left made it 71-68. Ruzicka was then fouled with 0.8 seconds left. He made the first. He then intentionally missed the second free throw. Cameron Quick came up with the rebound and put the shot up at the buzzer, but it was just long, allowing Boys Town to escape with the win at 71-69.
“It was a great game in front of a great crowd. I am very proud of our kids’ efforts. They left it all out there. We just came up a little short. A big turning point in the game was the last three minutes of the second quarter. We had kind of taken control of the game and had an eight-point lead. Some missed free throws and bad turnovers allowed Boys Town to cut the lead to two and gave them a lot of momentum for the second half. I thought Billy Hancock and Dylan Egr hit some really big shots, and I thought Cameron Quick had a great game for us,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Scheef added: “This was a very rewarding season for us. To start the season at 3-8, and then go on a 12 game winning streak says a ton about these kids’ mental toughness and love of the game. It would have been very easy to check out mentally in early January, but these kids did not do that. They kept battling every day, working hard to get better, and it paid off for them in a big way. We had a great run the last six weeks of the season and I am really disappointed to see it end. It was a lot of fun.
“I also have to mention what a great senior we had in Jordan Ptacek. He did not get to play many minutes for us, but he came to practice every day, worked very hard, and was just the ultimate teammate. His teammates absolutely love him. He is an awesome young man, with a very bright future in front of him.”
Hancock led the Warriors with 17 points on 5-9 shooting from the three-point line. Quick added 16 points on 6-9 shooting from the field and 8 boards. Ruzicka added 14 points and 6 boards. Egr had 11 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.
The Warriors were out-rebounded 42-28, but were 9-20 from the three-point line.
Wahoo ends its season at 15-9. Boys Town improves to 15-8 and will face Bishop Neumann on Thursday in the C1-5 Subdistrict Final.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Schuyler Warriors 53-40 in the season finale on Friday night in Wahoo.
Wahoo led 12-7 after one quarter, and led 23-16 at halftime. Wahoo stretched the lead to 37-26 after two Will Shanahan free throws and basket late in the third quarter. Schuyler, though, would score the last 6 points of the quarter to cut the lead to 37-32 after three.
A Brendan Lacey trey to open the fourth quarter put Wahoo up 40-32. A 3-point play from Jake Ruzicka pushed the lead to 10 at 43-33. A Schuyler trey cut the lead to 43-36. A Dylan Egr jumper made it 45-36. Another trey from Schuyler cut the lead to 6 at 45-39. Two free throws from Ruzicka on the next two possessions pushed the lead back to 10 at 49-39. Ruzicka also scored the next four points to make it 53-39. Schuyler would add a free throw at the end for the final margin of 53-40.
“This was a game in which we did not play well at all. Everything was a struggle offensively,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We had hoped to play better heading into District action. Jake Ruzicka had a great game and really carried us offensively down the stretch. Will Shanahan also played one of his better games.”
Ruzicka led Wahoo with 29 points on 10-13 shooting from the line and 7 boards. Shanahan added 10 points and 4 boards. Egr had 8 points, 4 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals. Lacey had 6 points and 5 boards. Cameron Quick added 7 boards.
Wahoo was just 5-22 from the 3-point line, but outrebounded Schuyler 31-24.
Wahoo improves to 15-8 with their 12th straight win heading into subdistrict action Tuesday against Boys Town. Schuyler drops to 4-18.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejay 62-44 on Saturday afternoon in Ashland.
Wahoo got off to slow start and was down 5-1 after five minutes of action. Over the next seven minutes, the Warriors outscored the Bluejays 26-4. Two Billy Hancock treys, a Brendan Lacey trey and a Corby Brigham layup put Wahoo up after one quarter 14-5.
Back-to-back Lacey buckets put Wahoo up 27-9 with 3:56 left in the half. A Cameron Quick free throw put Wahoo up 33-15 at the halftime.
In the second half, Wahoo maintained their lead and was not threatened. A Jake Ruzicka free throw gave Wahoo their largest lead at 60-37 with 3:30 left.
“We played really well for an eight minute stretch in the first half, but outside of that, we were not terribly sharp. We could not put them away in the second half like I had hoped,” said Coach Kevin Scheef.
Lacey led the Warriors with 16 points. Ruzicka had 14 points and 11 boards. Hancock added 13 points on 4-8 shooting from the 3-point line. Will Shanahan had 6 boards and 3 blocks. Quick added 6 boards and 4 assists.
The Warriors outrebounded the Bluejays 34-27, and were 7-17 from the 3-point line, compared to 4-27 for Ashland.
The Warriors won their 11th straight game to improve to 14-8, while Ashland-Greenwood dropped to 5-15. The Warriors will close out the regular season on Friday at home vs. Schuyler.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Columbus Lakeview Vikings 69-39 on Friday night for their 10th consecutive win.
The Warriors had a slow start as Lakeview jumped out to a 9-5 lead, and led 14-7 after one quarter.
Wahoo responded with a big second quarter, outscoring Lakeview 25-5. Jake Ruzicka had 12 second quarter points, and Cameron Quick had 8 in the quarter. The Warriors led 32-19 at halftime.
Wahoo continued to open up the lead in the second half. Wahoo led 52-31 after three quarters, and were never threatened.
“We were a little sluggish to start the game,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I was worried about a letdown after the Scotus game, and we had a little bit of that, but we got things going after the first quarter. Cameron Quick and Jake Ruzicka both had really good nights for us. Our defense was pretty solid all the way through.”
Quick and Ruzicka both scored 19 points a piece to lead Wahoo. Quick was 8-11 from the field and 3-3 from the line to go with 4 steals. Ruzicka added 7 boards and 6 steals. Brendan Lacey added 11 points. Will Shanahan added 8 points and 4 blocks. Billy Hancock, Dylan Egr, and Mitchell McGill added 4 assists apiece.
Wahoo shot 57.1 percent from the field, compared to 33.3 percent for the Vikings.
Wahoo improves to 13-8 and travels to Ashland Saturday to take on the Bluejays. Columbus Lakeview falls to 7-14.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the #2-ranked Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 54-47 on Tuesday night in Wahoo.
Wahoo jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter after a Cameron Quick bucket. The Shamrocks scored the next 6 points to cut the lead to 14-13. The quarter ended with Jake Ruzicka hitting a short jumper to put Wahoo up 16-13 after one.
The second quarter was a big one for the Warriors. After hitting two treys in the first quarter, Dylan Egr connected on two more in the second quarter. The lead was 27-19 late in the second quarter, when Egr hit back-to-back treys to end the half and put Wahoo up 33-19 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Shamrocks come roaring back. They outscored the Warriors 20-8 to cut the lead to 41-39 after three.
The Shamrocks took their first lead since the opening moments of the game at 42-41 with 5:00 left to play. A Brendan Lacey free throw tied the game at 42. A minute later, a Billy Hancock trey put Wahoo up 45-42.
The Shamrocks answered with a trey of their own to tie it at 45. With 3:30 left, Egr hit his fifth trey of the game to put Wahoo up 48-45. The Shamrocks scored on the following possession to make it 48-47. With 2:30 left in the game, Egr hit his sixth three-point goal of the game to make it 51-47. Tough defense and three Ruzicka free throws would ice the game down the stretch and give the win to the Warriors at 54-47.
“This was a great win for us to knock off the #2 team in the State, a team that had won its first 18 games in a row,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I am so proud of our kids. They have come so far in the last month. To think about where we were a month ago, and where we are now, is truly amazing. It is a tribute to these kids, who have just kept working their tail off all season long. They kept believing and doing the right things, and it is paying off for them now. We played a great first half. The third quarter was a struggle for us. For us to lose a 14-point halftime lead and get down by 1 with 5 minutes to play, and then bounce back, make plays and get the win, was very special. I am so proud of this group! Dylan Egr had an amazing night. He just kept making big shot after big shot, and Billy Hancock continues to hit big 3’s for us at huge moments.”
Egr led the Warriors with 20 points on 6-7 shooting from three-point range. Lacey had 9 points and 7 boards. Ruzicka had 9 points, 5 boards and 4 assists. Quick added 8 points and 6 boards. Hancock added 6 points.
The Warriors were 9-13 from three-point range, while the Shamrocks were just 4-24.
Wahoo improves to 12-8, while Scotus drops to 18-2. The Warriors will next host Columbus Lakeview on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders 48-34 on Saturday night in Grand Island.
The Warriors led 10-9 after one quarter, behind treys from Dylan Egr and Brendan Lacey. Wahoo stretched the lead to 24-16 after a Lacey bucket. The half ended with Wahoo up 24-19. Jake Ruzicka was 6-6 from the line in the second quarter.
The Warriors stretched the lead to 30-22 in the third quarter after a Will Shanahan bucket. Two Cameron Quick free throws gave the Warriors a 9-point lead at the end of the third quarter at 34-25.
Early in the fourth quarter, a Lacey trey gave Wahoo a 10-point lead at 37-27. Two minutes later in the fourth quarter, a Billy Hancock trey was the dagger that put Wahoo up 44-30 with 3 minutes left.
“This was a really nice road win for us. GICC plays such a deliberate style, that every possession is really important. We just had to grind it out for 32 minutes and we did that,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I thought our defense was really good tonight. We were flying around, getting to shooters and making everything tough for them. Cameron Quick was really tough out top on our 1-3-1. Jake Ruzicka played really well for us, and Brendan Lacey and Billy Hancock hit some clutch shots for us.”
Ruzicka led the Warriors with 16 points and 5 boards. Lacey had 12 points, 6 boards, and 3 steals. Hancock added 8 points.
Wahoo committed just 10 turnovers and out-rebounded GICC 25-21. The Warriors were 5-9 from 3-point range, and 17-19 from the free throw line.
In winning their 8th straight game, Wahoo improved to 11-8. GICC falls to 10-10. The Warriors host #1-rated Columbus Scotus on Tuesday night.

The Warriors scored the first 5 points of the second half on a Jake Ruzicka bucket and a Billy Hancock trey to push the lead to 30-22. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 38-32.
In the fourth quarter, Wahoo was still up 38-34 when a Ruzicka bucket, followed by a Billy Hancock trey, put Wahoo up 9 at 43-34. The Eagles scored the next 5 points to cut the lead to 43-39. Two Dylan Egr free throws pushed the lead back to 6 at 45-39. Two Cameron Quick free throws made it 47-39, and the Warriors closed out the win at 52-45.
“It was not one of our better games as of late,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We struggled offensively, but sometimes you have to win ugly, and we did that tonight.”
Ruzicka led Wahoo with 16 points and 6 boards. Lacey had 12 points and 5 boards. Quick had 8 points and 7 boards. Hancock had 7 points, 4 steals and took 2 charges.
The Warriors struggled from the field, shooting just 34.9 percent for the game. They committed just 9 turnovers, though, while forcing 19 Eagle turnovers.
Wahoo won their 7th in a row in improving to 10-8. Arlington dropped to 6-12. The Warriors travel to GICC Saturday to take on the Crusaders.

2016 NE Capitol Conference Champions
The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Platteview Trojans 58-46 in the Capitol Conference Finals at D.C. West.
The Trojans jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first quarter. A Will Shanahan bucket followed by back-to-back treys from Billy Hancock gave Wahoo a 13-12 lead after one quarter.
Platteview took the lead at 23-16 midway through the second quarter. The Warriors scored the next 6 points to cut the lead to 23-22. The half ended with Platteview up 29-26.
The Warriors opened the second half with a 10-1 run. A Cameron Quick bucket, A Brendan Lacey free throw, three points from Jake Ruzicka, and a Hancock trey put Wahoo up 36-30. A Ruzicka basket to end the quarter put Wahoo up 42-34 after three.
A fourth foul on Platteview’s big man, followed by a technical foul for his fifth foul, put Brendan Lacey at the line, and he hit 3 of 4 shots to give the Warriors a 45-36 lead. The lead would be no closer than 7 the rest of the way. Nine fourth quarter points from Ruzicka sealed the win for the Warriors at 58-36.
The Capitol Conference Tournament title was the sixth in a row for the Warriors.
“This was a great tournament win for us, beating two teams that had beaten us earlier this year,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “This team has made a ton of growth. I am very proud of them for continuing to work hard and not giving up when we were sitting at 3-8 a little over two weeks ago. Billy Hancock made some huge three for us again tonight. Cameron Quick was terrific on the glass. Mitchell McGill played really well for us tonight. Jake Ruzicka had a great second half after being in foul trouble the first half.”
Ruzicka led Wahoo with 18 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. Lacey added 16 points and 7 rebounds. Quick contributed 8 points and 11 boards. Shanahan added 7 boards.
The Warriors won their 6th straight game to improve to 9-8. Platteview falls to 11-5. Wahoo will next travel to Arlington on Friday night to take on the Eagles.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 58-50 in the Capitol Conference Semifinals at Fort Calhoun.
The Pioneers scored the first 10 points of the game and led 10-0 with 3:30 left in the first quarter. The Warriors’ Billy Hancock got Wahoo going as he hit back-to-back three pointers. A Cameron Quick bucket and free throw, and Brendan Lacey’s bucket and free throw capped a 13-0 run to put Wahoo up 13-10 after one quarter.
The second quarter stayed close and Wahoo led 30-28 at the break.
A Corby Brigham steal and lay up gave Wahoo a five-point lead at 39-34 late in the third. The game went to the fourth quarter with Wahoo up 39-36.
Calhoun took a 43-42 lead with 5:30 left in the game. The Warriors responded with a 12-1 run. Two Quick free throws, a Jake Ruzicka jumper and lay up, two more Quick free throws, and four more Ruzicka free throws gave Wahoo a 54-44 lead with a minute to play. Great free throw shooting down the stretch allowed Wahoo to get the 58-50 win. The Warriors were 22-25 (88%) from the line.
“You don’t win games like these without some solid free throw shooting, and we shot it very well from the line tonight. Jake Ruzicka was great for us tonight. Cameron Quick played through a broken nose, wearing a mask and played really tough tonight. Billy Hancock continues to hit some really big three’s for us. It was a really nice win,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Ruzicka had 21 points on just 8 shots from the field, as he was 6-8 from the field and 9-10 from the line. He added 11 boards and 4 steals. Quick had 12 points on 10-12 shooting from the line, to go with 5 boards and 5 steals. Brendan Lacey added 10 points. Hancock added 9 points on 3-5 shooting from three-point range.
The Warriors even their record at 8-8 and will play Platteview Saturday in the Conference Tournament Finals at D.C. West at 6:15 p.m. Fort Calhoun falls to 11-5.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Arlington Eagles 60-39 in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament Tuesday night in Wahoo.
Both team were unable to get much going offensively in a mistake-filled first quarter. The quarter ended with Arlington up 7-6, as the Warriors had 8 first-quarter turnovers.
The Eagles still led 21-17 with a minute left in the half. A Jake Ruzicka bucket followed by a Billy Hancock trey put Wahoo up 22-21 at half.
The Warriors started to break the game open early in the third quarter. A Cameron Quick bucket, followed by a Brendan Lacey three-point play, put Wahoo up 27-21. The score was 31-25, when Lacey made back-to-back three pointers to put the Warriors up 37-25. The Eagles scored the last 6 points of the third quarter to make it 37-31 after three.
Baskets by Ruzicka and Quick to start the fourth quarter pushed the lead back to 10 at 41-31. A Ruzicka basket, two Lacey free throws, and a Hancock trey put Wahoo up 48-33, and the Warriors would finish it up, for a 60-39 victory.
“It was not our best work tonight,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We were not very sharp, especially in the first quarter. The second half was better. Brendan Lacey got us going offensively in the second half. Billy Hancock hit some clutch threes again tonight, and Jake Ruzicka and Cameron Quick did a nice job on the glass tonight.”
Lacey led the Warriors with 20 points, 18 of them coming in the second half on 8-9 shooting from the line, to go with 8 boards. Ruzicka added 11 points and 10 boards. Quick had 9 points and 10 boards. Hancock added 9 points on 3 treys.
Wahoo out-rebounded Arlington 37-25, and shot 50 percent from the field.
Wahoo improves to 7-8 and will travel to Fort Calhoun on Friday to take on the Pioneers in Conference Tournament Semifinals. Arlington falls to 5-10.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Norfolk Catholic Knights 72-39 on Friday night in Norfolk.
The Warriors led 16-10 after one quarter and a big second quarter allowed Wahoo to head to the locker room with a 37-20 lead. Billy Hancock hit two big treys in the second quarter to help Wahoo get some separation.
The Knights chipped away at the lead in the third quarter and cut the lead to 47-35 after three.
Wahoo responded right away to start the fourth. A three-point play from Jake Ruzicka, followed by back-to-back buckets from Cameron Quick, allowed the Warriors to open the lead back up, and they cruised to the 72-39 win.
“This was a great win for our kids. We have never come to Norfolk and gotten after them like that,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We shot the ball very well, but a lot of that was due to excellent ball movement and good shot selection. Catholic did not shoot it well, but I think our defense had something to do with that. Jake Ruzicka had a great night for us. Billy Hancock really got us going in the first half with his three point shooting, and Cameron Quick and Dylan Egr played very well for us also.”
Ruzicka led the Warriors with 24 points on 8-12 shooting from the field and 7-8 shooting from the line. Ruzicka added 12 boards and 7 assists. Quick had 14 points on 7-11 shooting from the field, 6 boards, and 4 steals. Egr contributed 12 points on 5-6 shooting from the field, and Hancock had 9 points on 3-3 shooting from three-point range.
Wahoo was 29-46 (63.0%) from the field, including 7-12 from three-point range. The Knights were 1-19 from three-point range. Wahoo outrebounded Catholic 33-27.
Wahoo improves to 6-8, while Norfolk Catholic drops to 7-10. Wahoo hosts Arlington on Tuesday night in the first round of the Capitol Conference Tournament.

“If felt good to get a win like this. It was nice that we were able to play a lot of kids and get different kids quite a few minutes. We got positive contributions from a lot of kids,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Brendan Lacey led Wahoo with a career-high of 25 points, on 10-13 shooting from the field, and 6 steals. Jake Ruzicka added 16 points to go with 8 boards, 5 steals, and 5 assists. Will Shanahan added 7 points, 7 boards, and 6 blocks. Cameron Quick had 7 points, 5 boards, and 5 steals. Colin Grandgenett added 7 points.
The Warriors forced 34 Mustang turnovers, while committing just 14 themselves.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the D.C. West Falcons 72-61 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in Valley.
The first half stayed close throughout. Wahoo led 11-9 after one quarter, and the game was tied at 22 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Warriors opened up the lead. A 3-point play from Jake Ruzicka, followed by 6 more consecutive points from Ruzicka, gave Wahoo a 31-24 lead. Moments later, a Ruzicka dunk put Wahoo up 10 at 39-29 to end the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Falcons climb back into it. After a free throw from the Falcons cut the lead to 41-40, a Ruzicka basket pushed the lead back to 43-40. The Falcons scored the next five points to take a 45-44 lead.
A Brendan Lacey trey gave the lead back to Wahoo at 47-45. The Falcons then scored on consecutive possessions to take a 50-47 lead with a minute left. A Ruzicka bucket cut the lead to 50-49 with 30 seconds left. Following a missed Falcon free throw, Billy Hancock was fouled with 22 seconds. Hancock made both free throws to put Wahoo up 51-50.
The Falcons drove and were fouled with 4.6 seconds left. They missed the first free throw, but made the second to tie it at 51, sending the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Falcons took the early lead at 55-53, and led 58-55 with 41 seconds left, when Hancock drove, scored, and was fouled. Hancock made the free throw to tie it at 58. D.C. West held for the last shot. The shot was off, and the game went to a second overtime.
Ruzicka scored to open the second overtime, and added three more points on the next two possessions to put Wahoo up 63-58. The Falcons hit a 3 to cut the lead to 63-61, but that would be the last points of the game for the Falcons. Lacey hit a short jumper to make it 65-61. Ruzicka added two more free throws to make it 67-61. The Warriors would convert 5 more free throws to seal the win.
“This was a big win for us,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “It was important to get back in the win column. It was disappointing to blow a 10-point fourth quarter lead, but I was proud of our kids for finding a way to get it done in the second overtime. Billy Hancock made some huge free throws and a couple of big plays for us down the stretch. Jake Ruzicka had a terrific second half and overtime periods.”
Ruzicka had 34 points, with all but 6 coming after halftime, and added 8 rebounds. Lacey had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Cameron Quick had 9 points, 8 steals, and 7 rebounds. Hancock added 9 points and 4 assists.
The Warriors improve to 4-8, while D.C. West drops to 6-7.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Platteview Trojans in Capitol Conference action on Friday night in Wahoo, 85-71.
The Warriors started out well. They led by 10 late in the first quarter at 24-14 after a Ben Shanahan jumper. The score was 24-17 after one.
Wahoo still led 28-23 halfway through the second quarter, but the Trojans closed out the half on a 13-2 run to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room.
A Trojan trey to start the third put Platteview up 39-30. The Warriors went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Brendan Lacey lay up to cut the lead to 39-37. The Trojans would steadily pull away from that point on. They led 60-46 after three, and maintained that spread in the fourth quarter for the 85-71 win.
Platteview’s 6’10” sophomore Brady Heiman was too much for the Warriors, as he had a triple double with 25 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 blocks.
“There were a lot of positives from this game. We had stretches where we played well. We are just not doing it consistently enough to beat the really good teams,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Cameron Quick led Wahoo with 18 points and 6 boards. Jake Ruzicka also had 18 points and 5 boards. Lacey added 13 points, and Dylan Egr had 10 points, 5 steals, and 4 assists. Shanahan had 8 points and 6 boards.
Wahoo was outrebounded 40-25, and had 10 shots blocked.
Wahoo falls to 3-8 and will travel to D.C. West on Saturday afternoon. Platteview improves to 10-3.

The Warriors trailed 12-7 after one quarter. Crete increased the lead to 27-17 by halftime. The Warriors were still down just 40-31 heading into the fourth quarter, but Crete broke the game open early in the fourth quarter and went on to the 58-36 win.
“Crete has a really nice team. They are long and athletic, and we struggled against their 1-3-1 zone. We did not shoot it well enough to give ourselves a chance. Their point guard had a big game against us. This week certainly did not go like we had hoped. All we can do is come back to work as hard as we can on Monday and continue to get better,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Wahoo was just 11-38 from the field (28.9%), and could only force 8 Crete turnovers.
Jake Ruzicka led Wahoo with 15 points and 5 boards.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Syracuse Rockets 65-58 in overtime on Friday night in Syracuse. The Rockets hit a three-point shot at the buzzer in regulation to send it to overtime.
The Rockets led 10-9 after one quarter of play. The game remained close in the second quarter, as the Warriors took a 25-22 lead into the halftime break. Brendan Lacey had 12 first half points and Dylan Egr added 10.
Wahoo led throughout the third quarter. They led by as much as 5 at 35-30. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 35-32.
The fourth quarter remained a defensive struggle. A Lacey lay up with 53 seconds left in regulation put Wahoo up 47-42. The Rockets came back with a traditional three-point play to make it 47-45. Two Egr free throws made it 49-45 with 30 seconds left.
The Rockets hit a trey with 20 seconds left to cut the lead to 49-48. Two more Egr free throws with 18 seconds left put the Warriors up 51-48. The Rockets then hit a tough three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime at 51.
The Rockets scored first in overtime and never trailed after that. The Warriors were still within one at 56-55 with 38 seconds left. The Rockets hit two free throws to make it 58-55. The Warriors then missed a shot on their next possession. Syracuse added two more free throws to make it 60-55, and added five more free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Wahoo had four starters foul out in regulation and overtime.
“There is such a fine line between getting the job done and not,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “This loss was a punch in the gut. We led most of the way, and at times were very close to taking control of the game. We allowed them to stay close though, and they hit a very tough three at the buzzer to send it to overtime. We just were not able to get the job done in the overtime period.”
Egr led the Warriors with 18 points on 12-12 shooting from the line, to go with 6 steals. Lacey added 16 points and 10 boards. Will Shanahan also added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wahoo shot it well from the free throw line going 24-31 (77.4%), but struggled from the floor, going 15-48 (31.3%).
Wahoo falls to 3-6, and will travel to Crete on Saturday afternoon. Syracuse improves to 8-3.

Wahoo led 18-12 after one quarter behind 7 first quarter points from Brendan Lacey, and 6 from Jake Ruzicka. Wahoo still led by 8 late in the second quarter, but some missed free throws and turnovers allowed Lincoln Lutheran to cut the lead to 32-28 at halftime.
In the third quarter, a trey from Ruzicka gave Wahoo an 8-point lead again at 38-30. Lutheran would close the quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
The lead would go back and forth early in the fourth quarter. A Billy Hancock trey gave Wahoo its final lead at 52-50 with 4 minutes to play. Lutheran then went on an 11-0 run to take a 61-52 lead, and held on for the 67-56 win.
“There are some positives to take from this game. We had an 8-point lead on the #10 team in the state at two different points in the game. There was about a 90 second stretch at the end of the first half that kind of swung the momentum back to them. We just could not get stops against them in the second half. Our defense and our rebounding have to get better for us to get this turned around,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Lutheran shot 55 percent from the floor and outrebounded Wahoo 28-19. Wahoo struggled at the line, going just 9-18.
Ruzicka led the Warriors with 20 points and 6 boards before fouling out in the final 2 minutes. Dylan Egr had 19 points and 5 steals.
Wahoo falls to 3-5 and will travel to Syracuse on Friday night. Lincoln Lutheran improves to 8-3.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the preseason #1-ranked Bishop Neumann Cavaliers 77-46 in the finals of the Holiday Tournament held at Bishop Neumann.
Neumann led 18-10 after one quarter of play. The Warriors hung around and trailed just 26-22 after Billy Hancock’s trey. Neumann ended the half on an 8-0 run to make it 34-22 at halftime. Neumann scored the first 6 points of the third quarter to make it 40-22, and extended the lead the rest of the way.
“Neumann has a terrific team. They have great players, great athleticism, and great length. I think without a doubt, they are the team to beat in C-1 this year,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “ Being 30-6 on turnovers tells you all you need to know about this game.”
Neumann forced 30 Warrior turnovers to just 6 for the Cavaliers. Dylan Egr and Brendan Lacey scored 12 points a piece for the Warriors.
The Warriors fall to 3-4 and will return to action next Tuesday at Lincoln Lutheran. Neumann moves to 8-0 on the season.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Class B defending champions Elkhorn South 79-76 in the first round of the Bishop Neumann Holiday Tournament.
Elkhorn South jumped out to a 14-7 lead midway through the first quarter. The Warriors closed the first half with a 7-1 run to cut the lead to 15-14 after one quarter.
Brendan Lacey hit 4 consecutive treys to open the second quarter to take Wahoo from down 1 to up 29-21. South would then go on a 15-4 run to close the half with a 36-33 lead.
South continued their run early in the third quarter. They outscored the Warriors 13-2 to start the third quarter to take a 49-35 lead. Wahoo would then go on a 15-2 run to close the third quarter to cut the lead to 51-50 after three quarters. Jake Ruzicka had 8 third quarter points, and Cameron Quick contributed 6.
Wahoo went on a 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter and built a 60-53 lead. A Ruzicka lay up gave the Warriors a 9-point lead at 65-56 with 4 minutes left. South cut the Warrior lead to 67-64 with 2:30 left. A Dylan Egr lay up made it 69-64. Three more Egr free throws pushed the lead back to 72-64. Four more Egr free throws, and three from Lacey cemented the 79-76 win.
“This was a huge win for us,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “This is a young, inexperienced team that has been inconsistent. Hopefully, this is a springboard for what this team can become. It is a huge confidence booster for us. Brendan Lacey’s threes in the second quarter were huge for us. Jake Ruzicka had a big second half, and Dylan Egr’s free throws down the stretch were crucial. Everybody gave us positive contributions tonight.”
Ruzicka had 22 points to lead the Warriors. Lacey added 20 points on 5-9 shooting from the 3-point line. Cameron Quick came off the bench in his first varsity action to add 14 points and 7 boards. Egr had 11 points on 9-11 shooting from the line. The Warriors were 8-16 from behind the arc and 25-32 from the free throw line.
The Warriors will face Bishop Neumann in the tournament finals today at 6:45.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Fort Calhoun Pioneers 56-48 on Saturday in Fort Calhoun. A bad second quarter spelled trouble for the Warriors.
Wahoo jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game behind two baskets from Brendan Lacey and a Jake Ruzicka bucket. The first quarter ended with Wahoo up 9-6.
The second quarter was a rough one for Wahoo. Calhoun scored the first 8 points of the quarter to take 14-9 lead. The Pioneers extended the lead to 28-18 late in the second before a Jake Ruzicka trey to end the half made it 28-21.
Calhoun scored the first 5 points of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 33-21. Wahoo was still down 39-29 late in the third, when two free throws by Dylan Egr and a Mitchell McGill lay up cut the lead to 39-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Warriors cut the lead to 43-40 on two free throws from Egr, but that would be as close as Wahoo could get. Calhoun hit 11 fourth quarter free throws, to keep the Warriors from getting any closer the rest of the way.
“This was a disappointing night. A bad second quarter really did us in. I thought we fought better in the second half. We got the lead to 3 early in the fourth and were right there, but missed several shots around the rim. We struggled shooting the ball, we struggled taking care of it, and we struggled rebounding the ball,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef.
Ruzicka led the Warriors with 24 points and 7 boards. Lacey added 11 points.
Wahoo shot 4-16 from 3-point range, and just 35% from the field overall. Wahoo was outrebounded 31-23 and committed 20 turnovers.
Wahoo drops to 2-3 and is off until the Holiday Tourney. Fort Calhoun improves to 4-2.

Wahoo jumped out to a 9-3 lead after one quarter, behind 7 points from Jake Ruzicka. A layup from Will Shanahan to close the half put Wahoo up 25-15 heading into the break. Shanahan had 6 second quarter points for Wahoo.
A 9-2 run to open the third quarter put Wahoo up 34-17. The third quarter ended with Wahoo up 44-27.
A Ruzicka free throw to open the fourth quarter gave Wahoo its largest lead of the game at 45-27. Logan View then scored the next 7 points to cut the lead to 45-34. Six consecutive points from Shanahan pushed Wahoo’s lead back to 17 at 51-34. A Ruzicka basket put Wahoo up 55-37 with 2:28 left in the game.
Logan View then made a big run late. The Raiders cut the lead to 57-50 with 38 seconds left. A Ruzicka free throw and two free throws from Dylan Egr put the game away for Wahoo.
“It was a good win to cap a good weekend for us. After last weekend, a couple of wins feel real nice,” commented Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I thought our effort was good. We need to take care of the ball better. It was good to see us shoot the ball better this weekend. I thought we were in control most of the way, but it was disappointing that we did not finish the game out better in the fourth quarter. Will Shanahan and Jake Ruzicka both had good games for us.”
Shanahan led the Warriors with 19 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. Ruzicka had 17 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. Egr added 11 points on 3-6 shooting from behind the arc, and 6 assists. Brendan Lacey contributed 9 points, 6 boards, and 4 steals.
The Warriors shot 55.6 percent from the floor and forced 25 Raiders turnovers.
Wahoo improves to 2-2, and will travel to Fort Calhoun next Saturday.

The Wahoo Warriors defeated the Wayne Blue Devils 71-53 on Friday night in Wahoo.
Wayne jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. Wahoo then went on a 12-2 run to make it 14-8 and closed the first quarter leading 20-13. Brendan Lacey had 7 first quarter points for the Warriors.

Lacey, Mitchell McGill, and Jake Ruzicka keyed a 6-0 run to open the third quarter to break the game open at 43-27. Wahoo would extend the lead to as much as 25 at 55-30 late in the third quarter, and would go on to the 71-53 victory.
“After last weekend, this was a much-needed win,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “I liked our effort tonight. We got positive contributions from a lot of different people. Dylan Egr and Brendan Lacey both played really well for us tonight.”
Lacey led the Warriors with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Egr added 16 points and 6 steals.
Wahoo had a much better shooting night, as they were 8-17 from 3-point range, and 7-9 from the line. Wahoo outrebounded Wayne 35-29, and forced 22 Blue Devil turnovers.
Wahoo improves to 1-2 and will host Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday afternoon.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Seward Bluejays 61-51 on Saturday afternoon in Seward.
The Bluejays dominated the first half and went to the locker room with a 32-18 lead. The Warriors got things going in the second half. Wahoo was still down 38-28 with three minutes left in the third. A Brendan Lacey trey, a Dylan Egr lay up, and a Billy Hancock trey cut the Seward lead to 40-36 after three quarters of play.

The Bluejays scored on their next three possessions, while the Warriors missed treys on their next two possessions, to take a 49-43 lead, with 3:30 left. Two free throws and a lay up from Jake Ruzicka cut the lead back to 49-47 with 1:30 left. Seward’s Sloup hit a driving lay up to make it 51-47. The Warriors committed a turnover on their next possession and Seward then went 10-10 from the line down the stretch to seal the win.
“The first half was very disappointing. It was good to see us battle and compete in the second half. We gave ourselves a chance down the stretch, but we had just dug too large of a hole,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “We will build on the effort we gave in the second half, and keep working to get better.”
Ruzicka led the Warriors with 17 points and 11 boards. Lacey added 11 points. Josh Abbott added 6 boards. Wahoo was plagued by poor free throw shooting, 5-14, and poor 3-point shooting, 4-18.
The Warriors fall to 0-2, and will next host Wayne on Friday night.

The Wahoo Warriors were defeated by the Bennington Badgers 65-42 on Thursday night in the season opener.
Wahoo trailed 16-6 after one quarter and 31-16 at halftime. The Badgers gradually increased the lead throughout the third quarter. The Badgers’ front line went 6’6”, 6’6”, and 6’4”, while the Warriors started just one player taller than 5’10”.
“Bennington has a really nice team. They are very long, athletic, and they shoot it very well. They completely destroyed us on the boards,” said Head Coach Kevin Scheef. “Bart Hiscock is a terrific player, and we had no answer for him. We have a very young team. We are going to go back to work today and our goal is to get better each night out.”
Josh Abbott and Brendan Lacey led Wahoo with 10 points apiece. Bart Hiscock had 29 for Bennington. The Badgers outrebounded Wahoo 44-21. They were 8-20 from the three-point line, while Wahoo shot just 25.6 percent from the field (11-43).
The Warriors will travel to Seward on Saturday afternoon to take on the Bluejays.
